Surfing Carties & Alex Bluff winter 2011

Just some dodgy footage of me and Jim surfing Carties, Alex Bluff and the corner on the Sunny Coast.
Did you replace with a genuine Honda carby?
So, what was the original problem with the steering box in the first place? You didn't say. Also, basically, it looks like what you did was replace the "O" rings and teflon seals, etc. Would that be correct impression? Would indicate that box with hardened or not pliable "O" rings and/or teflon seals will not operate smoothly or at all?
@GereDJ2 The box was leaking. With age, it is common for the seal on the pitman arm end to cause a leak. On an old box, it's not a silly idea to replace the o rings and seals etc at the same time.
appreciate the break down on the 0 ring size differences... good stuff.
Thanks for your time bro👌
So good , clearly. Thanks
Great illustration and very good photography. Struggling with removing seals now. This helps. Relieved to see someone else struggling with seals. Old corroded Johnson 25
Exactly where did you place the temperature connector? Good video by the way.
@@esqueue I poked a hole through the foam insulation to slide the sensor through. The sensor sits in the centre under the base in the compartment above the compressor.
Oh sorry. Sensor connector goes to the digital thermostat that I have added to the side.
@@glennosgarage wow, thanks for answering my question. In my case, I believe it is my controller that is bad and the sensor is good. They both seem to use the same sensor so I might just use the existing sensor with the new temperature controller. It's the cheap $10 USD sensor from Amazon which I'll 3D print a case for. Have a great day.
Hello, I have a 1985 20hp Evinrude that I want to add electric start to. What parts do I need besides the Solenoid and starter? My engine has a starter flywheel Thanks
@philchieco8740 I would say just the starter, starter bracket, a solenoid, a high current switch/start button, and suitable cabling.
Mate i got a old ln106 hilux and got a kit to rebuild mine steering box but it didnt come with the seals for the worm adjuster the part is at 14.41 minutes on your vid but mine has the oring on the outside as well as a oring and teflon seal inside it . Were did you buy your kit from thanks
@@teranceable repco sels this kit here in Australia. Or drivetech. I'm not sure about overseas.
12:33 You kinda glossed over it doesn't the main shaft seal go with the open side with the garter spring facing to the outside? I know this is backwards to normal but I guess its better at keeping water out and the inner Teflon/oring seal keeps the oil in.
Seal kit opened at 6:48
Thank you
Its not the carburetor, its kinked fuel lines,, happened on my gx25… your welcome
@vartik2 In my case, it was the carburetor. I am aware that the line can kink under the carb.
Excellent video! Very easy to watch and follow 👌
At the end of your video, it looks like the motor is tilted upwards, Is there a locking mechanism to hold it there, or is it just propped there for your video??
Hi, sorry for a late reply. There is no locking mechanism on this model. However you can adjust how stiff the tilt is so it stays up by its self.
Hi Glenno, thank you for this video it's very helpful. I have what looks like the exact same engine (recently bought second hand) and have just taken the thermostat cover off, unfortunately like yours it was completely empty. I have managed to find the part number for the assembly and spring, but I'll be damned if I can find a spring available that ships to Europe. Do you know how exact they have to be if I just purchase a spring of a similar rough diameter and length? Or do you happen to have one laying around you could measure for me by any chance? I know it's not ideal, but I'm really don't want to be paying $40 + $40 shipping for a tiny little spring :'( Many thanks
@MrBambinomino No sorry I can't be much help. I dont own this engine anymore. Many people do run them with no thermostat. The water will be continuously pumping, so really, the engine will run cooler. It's not that big of an issue to run with no thermostat, in my opinion. I like to, as that's how the engine was designed to operate.
Great video thanks, getting ready to do my kzj78 tomorrow.
Thanks Glenno, top notch vid mate. I couldn't have refurbed it without you help 😊
A great video. I really enjoyed it! Do you know if a 98 105 series is the same? ( I expect that it would be. )
@garydavo07 Thanks, I'm not sure, mate. But it should be very similar if it's not the same.
Thank you for showing us how you actually did this!
When i pulled the water pump up , i pulled the shaft out of lower unit. How do you reinsert the shaft
This video shows you how to reinsert the shaft. You will have to take the water pump off to refit the key way (woodruff key). I hope you haven't lost the key way when it came out?
Thanks for the help. i I got the waterpump installed and lower unit re attached to the motor. Thanks again for your help
Those thermostats are expensive but at least changing out is much easier compared to the older 9.9/15 OMCs where the thermostat were on the bottom. Those required removing 7 bolts and the hood latch. An 87 9.9 I am fixing needs the thermostat replaced because it was shattered by an impeller key I found lodged inside it. Thanks for sharing and cheers from Canada:)
Have a land cruiser 1988 not seeing any fluid tank to put in fluid. Steering VERY HARD to turn. ... why?
Slow down for F sakes
Excellent video. Thanks for sharing this. I am also in OZ :-)
That was a beautiful job mate! Well done
Yes, I agree with the other comments. Very easy, simple and clear instructions. Way clearer than any other videos on the same subject!
Hi there, I have a problem I need help with. The piece you unscrew at 14:15 and then replace the o ring at 15:30. That piece, has a white Teflon ring and an o ring on the inside of it. Is there a reason you don't replace it? I understand that the kit may not have come with seals or it may not need to be replaced but In my situation, it has a split in it and needs to be replaced, Do you know of a kit that has those little seals included. as I'm at a loss on howto fix it. cheers
Does that hydrofoil help with cavatation having a over hub prop like this ? I have been looking for opinions on line but this is first one i have seen same as mine
It was mostly just stability that I was after. I can't say I really had any cavitation issues before.
Just saved me $$ thank you
What was the rubber O ring left on the bench?
That was from the old carb.
which size socket are the bolts that hold the carb in place?
I'm not sure, sorry, mate.
8mm
Great camera work, it's clear and to the point. I will use your video for basic maintenance on a GX35 as a reference, Thank You Glenno's Garage. I wonder if it wasn't just a clogged fuel filter and not a carburetor issue for fuel starvation under load.
Thanks a lot, excellent tutorial!
Where can I find the same end cup and spring I was able to order thermostat but can't find plastic cup and relief spring
Both parts are still available at marineengine.com
Any chance you still have the part numbers it won't let me search by name of parts
When I type my model number in it can't find model
J15BACCS
No sorry mate. Try searching by year, hp, model. Or try Crowley marine website.
Good job!
How many ball bearings should there be?
I'm not sure. I did count them at the time, but I didn't keep a record, so I can't remember. Sorry, mate.
I think I may have lost one
@@Tinman6444 ball bearings, if you need one go to a local bearing shop you should be able to find the correct one.
45 balls
Thanks
My steering gearbox is as big as what you've repaired. It's marked with Toyoda. My question is, are the repair kits for Toyota installed in Landcruiser and other vehicles like AUV but Toyota L are standard or each gearbox has a unique repair kit?
I think there would be different repair kits for the different steering boxes.
Ok
Thank you! Great job
on the end of main shaft that heads up to motor, there is groove for o ring, did you put that on or is it not supposed to have one"? the reason I asked is we feel we seem a o ring in kit that is where i put mine but was certain there was not one when i took mine apart?
I forgot to put that o'ring on. Yes I do think it's meant to be there. I'm not sure on its purpose. Possibly to stop water getting in and causing corrosion. But that's just a guess.
been thinking of doing this with 1971 20hp long shaft Johnson, guess everybody is asking for parts. Do you need to do anything to have it recharging your battery?
I was unable to get this model charging the battery. I don't think there is enough space under the flywheel for a charge coil seeing its got point ignition.
Nice!! may you comment mine?
Вот все тоже самое делаю,руль тугой…🤔
can you tell me the dimensions of the propeller. I need the dimensions to be able to buy the propeller Thanks help
No I can't sorry. I have since sold this outboard. You should be able to find a part number easily at marineengine.com
Do you have the bracket and starter part number ?
No I don't I'm sorry. But you should be able to find it easy at marineengine.com
Is the vdj79 v8 2008 old dash same?
I'm not sure. If the box looks the same shape, then the procedure should be very much the same.
@@glennosgarage does this fix slack in the box? How you you test for slack? I'm getting slightly wheel wobbles at 80 ish km a hour. Looked at everything else and new tyres on. ty
@IvicaBitless no this won't fix slack. But you can adjust slack to a certain extent, with a large flat head screwdriver on the thread and the nut on the top of the box. Wobbles can be hard to diagnose. Could be an unbalanced rime or a bent rim.
@@IvicaBitless mine had the same issue, turned out it just needed a good wheel alignment. I say good wheel alignment cause of the trouble i had after getting 2 bad ones, spent big dollars on everything under the front end, tyres, rims, wheel bearings, cv's, kingpins, new tie rod and ends, adjusted steering box play ect, still wobbled at 80km/ph , but not after the good alignment.
Legend! Thanks for the video the tips on how to get the power piston ball bearings back in (the Grease on the tube) life saver took me two minutes after I had been trying for the past 2 afternoons
Question where did you get your parts starter I have looking for starter motor mount?
All second hand. Have to be luck to come across them.
Was this rebuild because there was play in the box or just leaking? Didn’t see any bearing replacement.
Because it was leaking. The bearings were OK. Play can be adjusted to a certain extent by the lock nut and thread on the top on the box.
@@glennosgaragei had steering play issues and tried to rebuild it multiple time and adjust the pin lock and nothing happened, is there any way to fabricate a new inner shaft because I believe the come from old gears . I heard about company called red head in USA they build your steering box much better than factory made , but the problem is you must ship yours steering box to them.
@outdooreng4973 I'm not sure about that. Never heard of that company. It could be a good option. My vehicle has front leaf springs, so I'm not expecting perfect steering. I will always have some movement in my leaf springs.
