Using ChatGPT to improve accessibility by adding a skip link to the TailPress starter theme
ChatGPT and similar tools are becoming a part of my normal workflow as a web developer, and I think we should all be using them to build more accessible websites and applications.
Did you know what a skip link is? Have any suggestions for me? I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Can you do WordPress Development on Windows?
Hi Taylor, many thanks for this valuable video. I consider my self a beginner, even I have good knowledge in HTML and CSS. I had always that idea fixed in my head, that I must learn every thing to mastery and then start to freelance. But considering what you say, that is totally right. But, can you please explain to me what do you mean to use WordPress for design or to build websites. How can I use my knowledge in HTML and CSS on WordPress? I want to ask you if you can give me some suggestion about learning and understanding ins and outs of WordPress to be sure that I can solve any issue with the client website, because this is my nightmare in this field, I always have fear of just thinking that the client website get broken. Many thanks to you.
Thank you for the comment! I would start by using CSS to customize (and also create) WordPress block patterns. Find a design to copy and build it with the block editor and CSS. Regarding client websites braking, it's just important to have reliable backups. And the site shouldn't break anyways if you are using reliable, well-maintained themes and plugins. Everything comes with time. Just keep building websites and you will become an expert at it.
@@coding4tacos Tanks too much Taylor for your replay
Hi Sir thanks for video. I have important question about the returned json/wp api; about custom querying such as: if you need to get information about orders such as which items were bought by customer Taylor (3 tables involvement; items + customer + purchases), how to return such a query with wordpress json please?? or what workaround do we have?
Hi! I assume you are referring to the WooCommerce REST API. Orders would not be included in the normal WP REST API. Googling "woocommerce rest api query customer orders" returned some helpful articles for me. I would also ask this question to ChatGPT or Claude to get started. Good luck!
I have been a developer since 2008. In most cases, I use Laravel or Symfony Framework. One time I tried WordPress. It is easy to start with WordPress. But as for me, it is hard to maintain projects on WordPress, and it is not as flexible as sites written on a framework. WordPress is good for startups and simple sites. I also tried to work on UpWork - but it is extremely hard to get the first order and as a result first good feedback. I am stuck at this stage ))
6:45 7:48
is this still applicable in 2024? im just starting in wordpress dev :)
I would say so, yes! I'll be making an updated video, but I recommend learning the block editor and block patterns. I would try not to get stuck in learning only WordPress dev, though, and make sure you are learning web dev fundamentals as well. By that I mean using WordPress to get good at design, HTML, CSS, JS, PHP etc.
Yeah as an introverted developer myself, learning how to build relationships with people has been the most challenging thing for me. But as I've spent more time focusing on self-growth, searching for clarity, and trying to know myself, it has made it a bit easier to improve those soft skills. I definitely find beauty in and enjoy the challenge though!
Good for you! This is the right attitude to have IMO. I often find that being proactive in my communication early actually means less calls, meetings and problems later on in the project or client relationship.
I watched your very first video on how to run Wordpress on your local computer it was was very helpful. I’ve just started working with Wordpress again and I have some programming knowledge with PHP. Wondering if you have any tips on the limits of customization on Wordpress and woo commerce and any learning resources for a beginner that wants to do some customization on woo commerce and Wordpress generally.
Thanks for the comment! WordPress is extremely extremely customizable, which I view as both a strength and a weakness. Much of what I do is building custom themes from scratch after being provided a design, but building custom plugins also allows for even more customization. Visually and functionally, the possibilities are almost limitless, but WordPress is not always the best tool for very large sites with tons of users and user interaction (by this I mean getting millions and millions of views). WooCommerce is also very customizable (at least visually) because it allows you to override the template files. I think I would learn how to create a child theme, how to create custom post types, how to use ACF and how to override WooCommerce template files. Google, stack overflow and tools like ChatGPT and copilot can be really useful for this. There are some good TH-cam channels out there but unfortunately I've found most WordPress courses to be low quality or outdated.
@@coding4tacos Thank you. This is very helpful.
@@emekaonyekwe4558 Thank you! and best of luck!
Good to see you're making videos again, I always enjoyed your content. This video had some really great advice for all developers, not just web. It is vitally important to concentrate on people skills, they will help to smooth out some of the rough spots we face on the job. And I know from experience, that when it's time to hand out promotions people skills will out weight your coding skills hands down.
Thank you so much! Yeah I didn't place enough value on the soft skills at first, and it's something I try to focus on these days.
Glad to see you back. I'm looking forward to your future videos.
Thank you!! That means a lot. I'm doing my best to make time for it
I have currently used css, js, jquery, tailwind in many projects. I have am also learning php, can i just skip php for a while and jump to wordpress and try freelancing?
Yes, absolutely! Knowing JS will be extremely helpful, and you'll pick up on PHP for WordPress fast. Stack overflow and tools like chatGPT can be great for figuring out how to do things with PHP in WordPress. I would recommend checking out the Tailpress theme and Googling about the WordPress template hierarchy.
this is so so helpful, thanks a lot !!
Thank you! I appreciate it
thanks for the tips!
Thank you @adnjoo!
How to make account on upwork?
You can sign up on the website! I recommend making your profile look as professional as you possibly can, but you will need to send out quality proposals to actually get jobs. People won't come to you first.
How to install wordpress ?
If you are installing it yourself, you can get the files from WordPress.org. Most hosting companies install it for you these days. If you are working on your computer, I recommend using an app called "Local".
Hi I am btech graduate in CSE i have a good knowledge on html css JavaScript as well as react but i don't know any thing about wordpress can I do it easily
You have a great skillset to work with WordPress! You can definitely get started easily, but some things (plugin development, for example) will take time to learn.
It's been a long time! So happy to see you back.
Thank you so much! I appreciate the comment. More to come!

Hey man! Thanks for the video! I asked some people about how to become a Wordpress developer and they told me that I need to be expert in JavaScript and PHP also! Is it true? Or as you said I can land jobs with just my knowledge in HTML and CSS?
Hi, thank you so much for the video! You gave my confidence to get started with Upwork! I'm a housewife and the skill of Wordpress Setup & Designing is just newly gained. I'm struggle to get started with Upwork because I don't have any porfolio to be show to, and I was thinking what I don't have. Super simple explanation.. beauty
Probably dumb questions but 1. Does wordpress handle backend? 2. How do you give the site to the client after its done?
Yes, WordPress handle backend. It's an CMS with both front end and back end, and probably the most popular one, along the Drupal, Jolma and others.
I dont know about wordpress. but your explanation so helpful for me. thanks
How about HTML and JavaScript, isn't that needed to?
Love from Pakistan. Nobody has tolled this before. I was hesitating but I think ill start now and I'll gain experience. Thanks

Hello there, I cannot understand How understrap theme add {style.css} file? I searched get_stylesheet_uri() in understrap but not found..
Did you say you were 13 when you started? Impressive poise and confidence. Bravo my man bravo.
Hi Taylor, Am learning wordpress, and hoping to do freelance- but at the moment it feels like sky high and that I dont know enough ( I learned html&css, a bit of js, learning wp now) Can I start freelance ? I struggle to believe in myself. But I really want make it, as this is the only option for me to bring some income for my family. I have a baby and cant go work - and working from home- would be ideal.
Hi Anna! First of all, you've chosen a very practical path, so don't stop learning! Next, I would start looking for clients and working on marketing and people skills as soon as you can. Many clients need landing pages, help with page builders, hosting setup, etc. No one is ever 100% ready to freelance, so it's important to start doing client work as soon as you can. That way, you're getting paid to learn and it's much more motivating. I often say that the business side of freelancing is harder than the technical side.
Are you alive or dead? Confused. Because I didn’t find any videos of yours in a year. 😕
Superb explanation..looks very useful ..thanks
