    I’ve been hunting with climbing spikes for a couple years and love them. I repel out of the tree so I don’t have to worry about dropping my spurs. Food for thought!

    I am 74 years old and do not use tree spikes anymore. But when I did use them for climbing I did not use the Lemans belt while I climbed I only used it when I hung my lock on stand. When using tree spurs You don’t have to walk around the woods looking for that perfect tree if you find good deer sign just climb in a tree when the wind is right.

    That's hardly a good result. You gut shot the deer. The bullet passed straight through and the deer ran. Perhaps you should learn about bullet placement first before you shoot live quarry. Heart or lung shot will drop it where it stands . Moron

    I climb trees for a living. When I hunt, I’ll be in a climbing stand or lock-on. I’m not sitting in a saddle to hunt after sitting in one all week. And spikes damage trees, no matter what anyone tells you. It’s just a matter of whether or not you care.

    Those buckles are surely not rated to take the load of your body. I use spikes a lot and rhey come with heavy leather straps and a belt buckle style for a good reason IT IS STRING ENOUGH to hold you witbout breaking and causing your foot to slip out of the spike

    • @flinginairos
      @flinginairos ปีที่แล้ว

      They don’t need to be load rated to handle your body weight. They simply hold the spike in place on your foot which is what is holding the weight. The G hooks I currently have on my carbon spikes can handle some weight. Never had a single issue with them. The leather straps are no doubt the safest option, but I hated them.

    Coming from someone who has done tree work. You only use spikes If the tree is coming down completely while doing a tree job. Maybe something like a shagbark hickory they won't bother it but on a maple or other smooth bark tree like a beech your damaging the tree. I worked for asplundh for 4 years and left and went to private work because they were spiking trees that did not need to come down. If power company's do your trees tell them to only spike trees that are coming down. Its just because of laziness. Without spikes its harder but we live in a lazy society where everyone wants the easy way out. But everyone is following the Native American saying of killing your grandchildren to feed your children. Only when the last tree has been cut, Only when the last fish has been caught, Only when the last river has dried, We will learn we can not eat money. Native American proverb that your children and there children will probably learn because of how we left them.

    As a certified arborist I climb on spurs nearly every day, but only on dead or dying trees identified for removal. They should not be used on live trees as they open up wounds for pests and diseases to enter otherwise healthy trees.

      Hunts like this are typically an early season tactic for me. You can certainly target bedding with less leaves and cover but it’s harder. It’s also less predictable during the rut. I have sat farther back with a gun and killed them too but early season patterns are king lol

    I’m a saddle hunter and a climbing stand hunter who hunts a lot of public land and I agree that climbers cause as much or more damage to trees. Good point. I use a climber in the cold months when I have on heavy clothes. God made the trees for us, so don’t be so apologetic. I’d already have a pair of spurs if I had access to good private land. Great video!

    No - I think you guys are wrong. I think the shooter is right handed and has the camera to his right so he can reach the controls. It looks like he hit him in the liver and the bullet ranged forward and struck his left leg and broke it. So it likely hit the lower lobes of the lungs. The deer is standing with the left front leg back and after the shot he does not throw that leg forward to run so I would say he broke the front leg on the off side.
