I've been making fitness videos choreographed to my own classical piano music recordings. These are some of the videos I created with spare time during 2020-2021. Now I've gravitated more toward piano & posture content, and may add more climbing videos too. Lots of overlap there between core training and finger strength training / prehab.

For my Grandmother's 100th Birthday: Chopin's Nocturne in D-flat Major 💐💕🫶
Chopin's lovely yet intense Opus 27 No. 2 reminds me of my small but mighty grandmother. So much has happened in her lifetime, and Chopin captures that range in this Nocturne.
I do play this Nocturne on the faster side - overall, it's not a sleepy relaxing piece despite the calm intro. Many recordings settle in at the 6+ minute length, Pollini played it much faster, closer to 4.5 to 5 minutes. Lady A (my piano) and I usually find ourselves somewhere between that range.
When I first heard this piece, I kind of lost interest when I heard the beginning because it seemed too mellow and simple. Well, just like many of Chopin's great works, this is a hallmark "wait for it" piece. So much complexity and drama if you can get past the surface/intro.
P.S. Since this is a fitness channel after all, I wanted to point out how in this dress, you can see my lats working to help with arm weight to (try to!) create sound that carries without harshness in tone. Also, my upper traps are relaxed, and if you do see my right shoulder hike up occasionally, it's coming from my rotator cuff muscles to more to make room for my (disproportionately) long arms especially when I need to play in front of my torso.

Happy Halloween with Chopin's Ballade 2 - including a couple of spooky memory slips!
มุมมอง 25721 วันที่ผ่านมา
I "live" performed Chopin's Op. 38 Ballade No. 2 yesterday for Tonebase's Halloween online community concert. Except for the memory slip right at the beginning, I felt like my performance was pretty on par with how it'd gone with my run-thrus with friends. A few more mistakes than when I play on my own, in part due to playing at a faster tempo under pressure, but mostly able to land on my feet....

~ 1 week till playing this for a Halloween-themed online recital! Noticing a lot of things that are working, and others that need some more TLC. Really happy to be revisiting this piece - it's not long or that complicated, but I definitely didn't have the same grasp or understanding of it a couple of years ago. Relearning this piece while reading Lois Svard's "The Musical Brain" book has been e...

The word that describes this week's progress is "non-linear"... Main takeaways from this run-thru: 1. My musical memory seems to be solid enough that I'm able to not lose my way despite microblips of forgetfulness. 2. During my piano lesson last weekend, we worked through some changes in technique for the Presto portions and revised fingering for the Coda. These changes will definitely help me ...

I've been working on re-memorizing chunks of this ballade over the last week. I have a lesson this weekend and ideally would like to play this from memory. Here's today's attempt at playing through from memory except where I knew I'd have to peek in measures 97-139. Luckily, that section is not that difficult technically, which I guess perhaps makes it harder for my brain to prioritize memorizi...

I was going to give Chopin repertoire a rest for a bit and focus on some Bach and Schubert, but felt compelled to pull out my score for Chopin's 2nd Ballade. And now I guess I'm committing to relearning it and making more progress than the first time! This is my "starting point" video after playing through it a few times today. As background, I started learning it in May 2022, and then changed ...

First "live" performance! (You can hear an audience member muting in the beginning.) I played "the heck out of" the piece, or did my best to. Sacrificed some accuracy in exchange for energy and drama, something that I started considering after watching many pros' live performances of Scriabin's famously dramatic Op. 8 No. 12 etude. The quote, "I've learned that people will forget what you said,...

It's been exactly 1 month since I shared my first progress video for this piece. Since then, I've been working a lot on practicing specific challenging sections, as well as working on some etudes with helpful technique (e.g., Chopin Opus 10 No. 1; Chopin Opus 25 No. 7). Everything is generally okay when I play the sections in isolation - even the coda now. This video is probably on the rougher ...
Happy Anniversary with Chopin's Nocturne Op. 9 No. 2

Happy anniversary to my wonderful husband! 😘🫶 August is also a big wedding anniversary month for our close family, and I wanted to learn this lovely nocturne to commemorate. (Also because my husband ENTHUSIASTICALLY starts whistling along whenever he hears this piece!) It starts off simply; then Chopin adds more flourishes each time with lots of opportunity for improvisatory riffs. (If I'd know...

When I restarted learning piano almost 7 years ago, Chopin's 1st Ballade (Opus 23) was one of my wishlist pieces to be able to play. I tried learning it soon after, but clearly wasn't ready for it and my teacher kindly hinted this was the case. Not just technically, but also from a musicianship & theory standpoint. So I put it aside (and watched with envy as countless classmates worked on it). ...
Beethoven Op. 110 1st movement for Tonebase June 2024 Recital

I played the first movement of Beethoven's Opus 110 piano sonata live this afternoon for Tonebase's June online recital. Even though I was super nervous, I'm glad I did it :) I decided a few weeks ago that I would play this first movement from memory, but it wasn't until two days ago (at my piano lesson) that I committed to playing it live (vs pre-recording). There's always anxiety involved wit...
Happy Father's Day with Beethoven's Pastorale Sonata (Opus 28, 1st movement)
มุมมอง 2935 หลายเดือนก่อน
Did you know that the last notes of Beethoven's Pastoral Sonata spell "Dad"? At least the bass notes do. I was inspired to record this for Father's Day because of the repeated D's in the left hand, reminding me of the stable childhood my dad provided our family, and how I know I can always count on him...The whole sonata, but especially this first movement, also embodies the innocence and simpl...

[Pre-recorded! Not performed live] Grateful for the motivation to revisit and make more progress with this fun piece! Wonderful 👌 Thank you and Happy Anniversary 💚
Thank you so much!
Good Morning from Poland. Country of Frederic Chopin. I would love to be a piano only to have the privilege of being seen, attracted, touched, possessed and caressed by the hands of Judy. She plays the piano with his soul, sensitivity and fragility at the same time. Seing him at here was one of a lifetime experience. Thank You, Judy...
This has been my favorite Chopin Nocturne since grade school. When I was in my early teens, I memorized the right hand melody of this great piece. I enjoyed playing it for many years because I just could not memorize all those jumping chords the left hand. I've never had piano lessons, but I learned to read notes by reading John Thompson's Easiest Piano Course Book 1. Through the years I fell in love with many other classical pieces that had beautiful melody lines and would work on them until I had them memorized; beautiful pieces such as Chopin's Preludes, 4,6,7,15,20,21 and 22; Chopin Nocturne Op. 48, No. 2 (1st mvt), and Op. 55, No. 1 (1st half); Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata (1st mvt, currently working on memorizing the 2nd mvt); DeBussy's Reverie, to name a few. Last year, at the age of 67, I decided to try again on this piece, and I finally memorized it. I am so enjoying playing it now after working on it for a year. But I cannot play it without making several mistakes somewhere. I hope to play it someday as almost flawlessly as you did! Thanks for the upload! Keep up the beautiful playing.
Thank you for sharing your journey and kind comments, and congratulations on learning this piece!! The harmonic changes are indeed trickier to memorize than one would think. Your approach of memorizing the melody lines is thoughtful and inspiring. 👏👏👏 Are you working on any other pieces at the moment?
Oh I see - 2nd mvmt of Moonlight - lovely choice!
So beautiful !
Thank you for listening!
what piano do you play on?
Hi! I play on a rebuilt Steinway A3 from 1915.
Grandma video in grandma's favorite dress!
Mom has also been requesting I wear this dress for a video 😄
the frequencies were a little muted during the recording, due to the top being down, but your execution was pretty good...
Yes, it's a small space and I have to keep the lid closed for pieces with large dynamic range like this one, otherwise the mic will buzz for the Zoom listeners 😅 Execution will hopefully get better with time, thanks for listening!
Someone told me once that anytime a mistake is made in music to think about the original amount of work the composing likely took with all the subtle changes to make it just right. Think about all the mistakes they made! Making a mistake is probably the greatest compliment you could pay to the composer. It just proves how much work it took to make it just right. Keep up the good work!
What kind words! Thanks for your encouragement, and indeed I will try to think about it that way 🙏

I'm currently learning the piece as well. You sound wonderful- don't quit again! I expect for you to reply to this comment when you finish it, and I can't wait to listen
Thanks for the encouragement! How is it coming along for you? I'm not sure I will ever be finished with this piece, but I will let you know if I upload a performance recording next month.
@@fitphile It's coming along alright- I can do the whole things hands-separate, but I think doing that Coda at full speed will be the end of me haha. You're honestly so close! I'd love to hear it when you feel complete. I also just watched your Beethoven Op. 110 1st movement, and it's absolutely beautiful. I love the website as well! Do you have an instagram or anything?
That's a smart approach! I'm discovering so many blind spots because I didn't do diligent hands separate learning 😅 Not such a big deal for recordings, but scary for performing! Thanks for watching the Beethoven! It's a wonderful piece too. I'm trying to stay off of social media but recently started a IG account @imperfect_and_impromptu with the idea of getting some live stream performance practice...
@@fitphile Just requested to follow- i'd love to watch live streams!! I 100% feel you on staying off of social media. I now only have stuff downloaded on my pc so that it's less of a temptation throughout the day. I hope you had a great weekend

Thanks for the encouragement! Yes, you are entirely right. I put this piece aside for a few months, and have already forgotten so much.
You will never make it
💖
ur weird
Amazing! Id love to play this piece one day. How much do you practice with the sheetmusic before practicing without looking at it kt?
I hope you can play this piece on day too! That's a great question... Since I restarted learning this piece a month ago, it took about 15 hours of work to be able to playthru the entire piece from memory and not have to refer to the score to get back on track. (I purposely held off on memory work for the first week because I was preparing to play another piece from memory at a Zoom recital.) At the time of this progress video, I had accumulated about 23 hours of work. I would note that 6 years ago, I had worked on this piece enough to be able to stumble through it from memory (I hadn't started tracking my practice stats back then). And I've attended several classes where classmates worked on this piece, and of course listened to several recordings. So all of that has helped the relearning / re-memorization process as well. Hope that answer helps!
Never give up 👏👏👏👍🏻 !
Thanks! Yes this piece is worth it 💖
Nice work...it's coming together!
Thanks! I hope so 😅
Keep it up you will get there.
Hope so, thanks!
