Emergency fund is saving my butt too!
Right?! I’m really seeing the benefits of it now… before I kept thinking… I’d rather use all this to pay off a credit card. 🤦🏻♀️ I am a full blown Emergency Fund Stan now.
@@EmilySweven I had to use it on a plumbing repair which was necessary, but I am not looking forward to the grind of refilling it back up. I try to become Spartan-esque to speed it up but a girl can only eat so much beans and rice
Meal prep looked professional again. I would‘ve guessed 1,200 for the car - I feel like you got lucky.
Thank you!!! ♥️ I know right?? I thought for sure it would be over 1000 for sure. I was so relieved
It was Thanksgiving here in Canada, this weekend. We've been running around since Friday and I'm exhausted at this point. But the house needs a good cleaning and you were the kick in the butt I needed to stop rotting in my bed. Let's do this 😅 Also, having an emergency fund that covers that much of an emergency bill is a great accomplishment. It means you did very good in the previous months. And we all know that cars have a way to sense if we have money aside. They want us to use it on them.
Happy belated thanksgiving!!! I hope it wasn’t too stressful and I’m wishing you calming days!! ♥️ we got this!!! I love the idea of cleaning together! Although I could lay in bed all day too 🤩 lol They really do… it’s their sixth sense for sure. I think I’m going to make it a priority to build the emergency fund back up. It’s really saved me a few times.
I like the way you set up these budget reviews! going to make a note for myself as I update monthly expenses, too. I'm learning in the editing realm, really like your sit-down style!
Thank you! It takes a little extra time but I like the outcome!! Editing has turned into my favorite part. TH-cam tutorials are so helpful! I learned the talking head edit from “How to create circle/shape masking effect in Final Cut Pro” by the creator Ants Drone! Just in case you need a jumping off point 🥰
It’s good to see the boiler debt going down- it’s gonna be much fluffier without that debt. 🎉🎉🎉 To not get into debt for Christmas- maybe you can make a list of people you need to buy for. And start buying presents slowly but surely.
I can’t wait!!! I’m so excited to be rid of it! I can’t believe it’s in two months! BUT that’s so smart.
Well, I did notice you were gone and I'm glad you are back!
Yes!!! Ready to take on October 🥰
P.s you’re the sweetest ♥️
There are two types of salaried positions! Exempt and non-exempt. Exempt: exempt from over time. Non-exempt: you qualify for overtime. Usually exempt positions depend on the type of job, because some positions don't qualify. Kind of nice when it doesn't!
Ooooooh okay so not shady at all just lacked the knowledge! Good to know I don’t have to side eye them now 😉 thank you! I didn’t even know there were different types.
New subscriber here ❤
Welcome!!!!! I’m so happy to have you here ♥️
Yes!! I love this train of thought and I will totally follow your becoming financially literate journey! For me debt and investing for retirement are the biggest topics looming over my head
Honestly same… especially investing it seems so complicated so I’ve always avoided it!
Granola is cheap to make for sure. If you plan on putting dried fruit in there - don’t roast these in the oven. They will burn - just put them in afterwards. The salad looks bomb- you can’t fool anyone - you’re secretly good at this 😂.
Hahahah!!!! I feel like I have the chopping down! Last night I tried another new recipe… wow it was so good!! Makes me feel a little more confident in the kitchen when it comes together 🥰
Strange horticulture is so good!
I LOVE IT! It’s so gorgeous and the soft rain in the background is immaculate lol I don’t regret the purchase
Also thanks for the update 😊. PS: I would be up to watch a shop and meal prep video from you.
That’s such a good idea! I need to go to the groceries so I’ll gather some recipes and take you along!!! ♥️
@@EmilySweven awesome - but no pressure … I’m just thinking of stuff where video-making and actual life overlap - so you still have some time to chill in between. 🤓 Maybe you can also do another outfit video. Like for the upcoming fall. Prepare like a color palette to show the viewers and go through all your clothes and fitting nail polishes and use those - I’m thinking brown, maroon, rust tones. Also back to meal prepping theme - there’s produce calendars and it shows you what produce is due and cheap every month - maybe check for September and October and meal plan accordingly- pumpkin for example. It’s good for roasting and soup too. Since you’re coloring you own hair and do your own nails, you could do a monthly frugal glow-up video too. Maybe do a part 2 of the money literacy journey too. You could go to the library check out two, three, four books and discuss points and quotes from these and maybe tell the viewers which ones you’re already doing and which ones you could improve on. Also, I think people like themed playlists on TH-cam - try sorting your videos that way maybe?! Like do money literacy, debt updates, beauty and fashion, maybe an Emily at home playlist for cooking, meal planning, decluttering, empties and such. Enjoy and keep up the good work! My actual name is Kathleen btw. David’s my teenage son. 🤪
You should divide eating out and groceries into different categories. Also if you go grocery shopping, I would shop in meals. After a week for a 100 bucks you’ll make 11 meals, but for the same amount you’re only getting 5 meals let’s say. It’ll open your eyes, how little you get at fast food joints. I try and buy root vegetables a lot - carrots, potatoes and stuff - they’re cheap. You can roast them (with onion), you can make mash with them , you can make a soup with them. So versatile. Also wraps (if you Master the wrapping part) can be done for the whole week and your lunch is set) and these are cheap too. Just gather all you empty salad dressings and use those up, use Ketchup even as a sauce. Maybe buy loads of eggs and spuds and make breakfast wraps. Cornflakes and milk with grapes and bananas are cheap too. Skip on meat - maybe store some frozen nuggets and sprinkle some in, if you can’t forego meat.
You’re amazing!!!! 😩 I feel like I need to do weekly meal planning where I make meals that can be batch prepared. I LOVE wraps too I need to add them into the rotation. Also I’ve never made my own soup before either so maybe this is the perfect time to try!
I think a good place to start is understanding what goes into calculating your credit score. Then as you pay off debt you can learn about the next financial goals that suit your plans
I love that idea. To be honest I haven’t seen my credit score in a while since I know it’s probably not great. Maybe this is the perfect opportunity to rip the bandaid off and dig into it.
😂😂😂Nooo stay away from those 😅😅😅
I did!!! I fought the temptation and just took a nap instead to stop the impulse buying
❤😅
The book that helped me the most getting started was "I Will Teach You To Be Rich" by Ramit. It sounds stupid but it was actually so helpful! Also the financial feminist podcast
Oooo perfect! Honestly I’ll try anything especially if I get the audiobook version if they have one so I can listen while I clean. Which one would you recommend I start with first?
@@EmilySweven I Will Teach You To Be Rich would be a better starting place honestly
I heard you can use a dishwasher tab and dissolve it in pots or on trays. Dissolve it with a bit of water for crusty foods that won’t come off. Never tried it though.
Oooh that’s a good idea I’ll try that today!! I took a scraper to it 😂
As a Canadian, the whole credit union/not having a bank account confuses me. It feels very simple, over here.
lol same. I was mind blown that there was a difference! I don’t think I could function without a bank account.. I’d never be able to keep track of my money lol
@@EmilySweven My kids are 12 and 7 and they already have bank accounts and debit cards LOL They are linked to ours so I can transfer money and watch all the transactions. Obviously, they don't really have transactions right now because they are so young, but I will be able to keep an eye on it when they get older and start going out without me. I'm trying to send them on the right path financially, at an early age.
I love that so much!!! That’s such a great idea and sounds like it would be so helpful to start them on a healthy financial foundation. ♥️
I personally think - you being an overthinker a bit - don’t load up on knowledge that you can’t use right now. Goal one is getting rid of debt. When you’ve done that in a year or two, move on to level 2. Secondly- get an overview of stock. What you’re doing is great - rummaging through your stuff is a good second step. Take note of what you have group everything together - use everything up and don’t waste money on duplicates. Sell what you don’t need and enjoy the space. Thirdly, after that is taken care of, I would make sure that all the catastrophic scenarios are taken care of. Health insurance, unemployment insurance, make sure if your parents would take you in if you weren’t able to work / or in a veggie state. Who will take care of the dog. Write a will - that kinda thing. I would think of ramping up any pension plans. Calculate what you need to invest on top of any job pension plans that you already have. Old age will come and you need to be prepared. When you’ve done that - part 4 kicks in. Compare food prices, do meal planning, check for deals on you favorite hair dye, buy a boatload of your favorite Tampons when they’re on sale. Renegotiate your car insurance. Think ahead a bit. Get rid of the convenience (like food delivery) - pretend you live a life like in the 1960s. 😅 - always re-evaluate, adapt and save a bit that way. And lastly, make „goals“ of stuff you want to to or buy and put money aside to do them - like vacations, hair appointments, buying a good winter coat, nice sunglasses, do language courses or a dental cleaning here and there. Skip out on these things for now, but later you will enjoy these things - because all the other crap (steps one through 4) are already taken care of - and you won’t have a single thought to waste on these things.
Me about to print this and hang it on my mirror to see it everyday ♥️ This itched my brain in such a beautiful way!!! Thank you so much for giving me a little guideline of where to start and a good base to sprout from!!! 🤩

Thank you!!! I was feeling so overwhelmed of where to start so this is so helpful! ♥️
I feel like I've always been a budgeter and saver but the next step always feels like investing which can be as simple or as complicated as you make it. A lot of people recommend just investing in the S&P 500 which tracks the 500 biggest companies but I always feel so icky thinking of giving Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg, etc my money so that they can exploit ppl and then give me a cut (interest). But at the same time, the bank and my 401k are already doing icky things with my money and then giving me a cut. I'm definitely glad I know what I know, not that I'm an expert at all, but it feels like true "financial literacy" comes when you drink the kool-aid of capitalism and realy start playing the game and I just can't bring myself to sell my soul yet. Like, I just want to have money to care for myself without working the system and screwing other ppl over but all financial advice I've looked at tells me that's how I end up poor the rest of my life.
I feel like I could have written your comment myself. I don’t know really anything about investing but even on a surface level it’s always kind of felt like an ick idea. It almost is sold like a necessity in order to not be poor forever but I definitely can’t wait to look into it more to really remove the mystique of it all.
I really would recommend looking into the money guy show. They break things down and also have a guideline that you can follow.
Oooh thank you so much!! I’ll look into them. I love a guideline since I kind of feel like I’m navigating through with my eyes closed lol
nooooooooo stay strong!
I did!! I went outside and refused to get on TikTok so I wouldn’t be influenced to buy! They almost got me though 😵💫
How about you wait till you have paid off your next smallest debt, please. Maybe that will coincide with Christmas time. Ask your parents to give you the stuff or a gift card. If it’s an actual good product - it will not be a fad and they will still sell it in December.
I didn’t do it! I think the buying impulse has passed. 🫨
Don’t do it!
But but but!!!! 😩 the impulse to buy is so strong
I use the exact same spreadsheet as you. I added a section for a running balance, kind of like balancing a checkbook. I've found it very helpful, especially toward the end of the month when I'm waiting for certain payments to clear and I want to know how much I'll have left to put toward savings goals for the month.
Ooooh! That’s a good idea! Something to keep track of ALL transactions? How did you lay it out in the columns?
@@EmilySweven Yep, anything coming in or going out of our checking account. I added it to the right of the breakdown pie chart. It includes the transaction date, (or projected date) a note about what it is, the amount (positive or negative) and the remaining balance after that transaction. I added conditional formatting to make the numbers change color based on if it's a deposit or a deducation. It helps my brain so much to have things color-coded! To get the remaining balance, it's a formula that sums the previous remaining balance and the amount of the transaction. I just carry that formula all down the column. Once the transaction has fully cleared our checking account, I strike through it. I feel so much on top of what's actually happening with our accounts having the running balance right there.
I would take the 93 dollars something every fortnight - right when you get paid - and throw that as an extra random debt payment to get rid of that isht. That way you remove the chaos and it’s done and gone. 🎉
Also savings I would do 89 - to make it 400 😜.
Yes! I want it gone asap so I don’t have to think about it anymore and get back to paying off the cards 🥳 especially since there are only 3 left
Hey hey, the brown shirt goes really well with the color of your bun 😂 - you know it’s all about color repetition. Do you have maroonish pants or a skirt? It would probably go well together.
I dont 😩 that would be so cute! I have dark green wide legs pants that I almost wore but it was giving shaggy from scooby doo so I have to change lol
Can you do a fun bbq and drinkydrink 😜video please?! With your friends if they’re comfortable. The Sunday tackle (stackle) is a good idea. I always put stuff I want to tackle right by my apartment door. So I see them all the time and they annoy me - which forces me to do them. 🎉
I would love that! I’ll ask them if they wouldn’t mind! Right?! I always have these little things that come up and annoy me like none other so I think taking the time during my resets to take care of it would be so nice.
Shorts are a fun way to do a quick update/chat. So, I vote for more shorts!
Good! Sometimes there are quick things that I’d love to update on but doesn’t really fit in a video so I thought shorts might be perfect for that lol
Self-care is so important. I too tend to put way too many tasks on my to do list. I guess I never learn my lesson LOL
Same!!! It’s always a mile long and then I get sad when I only cross off 2 out of 50 lol
Hello ❤ Great explanation 🎉
Thank you!!! ♥️
Oh - walk outside 🎉🎉 get outside - your life will thank you. I „never“ leave my bed too. But I just went to a Pilates class with 4 skinny girls. There’s full mirror walls. It was painful 😂 if I can do it, you can do it.
Those Pilates classes look so intimidating!!! How was it? Was it really hard?
@@EmilySweven Theres one or two exercises that I can’t do. But for the most part it’s alright. You will feel self conscious - but I think thats part of it. I do my classes with my local university - externs can join their classes at a slightly higher rate. Everybody is in their twenties their as they’re students. Maybe you could look if there’s community centers that offer free or more affordable classes. I bet there would be more mature women there that would be beginners too?
@@EmilySweven I think garden work is good for your fitness too. Just walk around pull some weeds. And also throw a ball with both arms to play with your dog. Make yourself a nice little cool fizzy drink 🥤 We have sthg called Schorle - which is a third apple juice and two thirds sparkling water. It’s lower in calories than soda but still nice enough.
That’s a good idea! I’ve always wanted to try Pilates and I think I even bought a dvd once that I never watched but I need to leave the house more 😂
Omg! I LOVE apple juice! I need to get sparkling water in my next grocery haul and try that. Ooooh I do need to clean up my backyard… it’s looking a little apocalyptic… I think I’ll do that this week! Good for my house and good for me! ♥️
I'm glad you enjoyed the experience any way, but it's so wild to me that an airline can move your flight up like that!
I know!!! At first I didn’t think anything of it until I realized how close it cut to the concert 😩 It was such a fun trip but I still get a twinge of spite when I think of it lol
ahh... Exercise.... In the summer, I'm good. We have a pool at home and I do 30 minutes of swimming at least 5 times a week. But in the winter... Arff.... As much as I love winter, I struggle a lot with discipline. We have a lot of snow and it gets very cold, so doing sports outside is not easy for me. And I really, really enjoy the cozyness of cold days in my home! Why would I go work out if I can just stay home and cook beef stews and pies?
I totally feel you!! I barely ever leave the house anymore. I would love that! Swimming seems like such a good workout too. I was thinking of looking for a gym with a pool but didn’t want to may the membership lol
@@EmilySweven I'm a heavy woman, so being in the water makes exercising a LOT easier. I can train for a longer period of time, and I'm in a lot less pain afterwards. Also, and it's not a small point.. I ENJOY it. I don't suffer the whole time. So, I'm way more motivated.
Yes!!!!! 🙌🏼 this! I feel like it’s so hard for me to find something that doesn’t feel like a punishment. My friend Laura said she would let me use her trampoline since that’s how she found joy in working out and it isn’t too bad on the joints. I’ve always loved swimming and thought about getting a lap pool but since I’m working on paying off debt that can be something I work towards. ♥️
@@EmilySweven I see the benefits of my swimming sessions on my body but to be honest, I see the most difference on my mental health. I feel such at peace when I'm in the water. So, if trampoline is something that makes you feel joy, disconnect from the world for a few minutes, and shut your brain down from all the noise that comes with daily stress... by all mean, jump away!
Very esthetic intro. You scared me power-washing your eyelids like a daredevil. Can you do a dog walk - choose a thing that is 15 minutes away from your house - but like brisk walking - for a return that’s 30 minutes exercise per day. Maybe there’s a dog food store that is a few minutes away from you - so your whole goal could be to buy one little treat and then return home. Also you can bring an isolated canteen / bottle whatever - fill it with ice cubes and sit down in a park and chew on them - sharing with the doggie. You can also make them cranberry juice ice cubes.
Thank you!!! I really had fun with it! Hahahah! Power washing is so accurate 😂 when I was watching it back I was like wow… is THAT how hard I wash my face?!? lol That’s a good idea!!! Good for both the pup and me! I’m going to try this today!!
Edinburgh is a nice place, especially the castle and the Palace of Holyroodhouse.
It was so beautiful. Some of the most beautiful architecture I’ve seen. 😊
There’s café Nero in Poland - and it was quite affordable there. For me as a German at least. I’m sure for the average Polish earner not so much. Don’t know about UK prices there though.
Oh okay! It felt to be a fair price. But honestly if it’s a beautiful environment and they give me latte art I’ll love them lol
I'd say being "only" $500 over budget is pretty good. I'm sure you could have easily adopted the YOLO mentality and gone even harder on the spending. (I know I would have.) 😊
Oh I came close a few times but I tried to keep checking my total before I went to sleep everyday so I had a general idea of what I was spending. It still didn’t quite work BUT I think mentally it made me say no a bit more lol Especially since I’m a recovering credit card swiper. 😂
I‘m still glad you went. For your budget / debt update. It’s quite hard to follow. It’s small writing. Could you do cutouts and show them on the screen? What would be interesting would be percentages of your income. Like recent and goal ones for your variable costs. Also for every debt, it would be nice to add a column for each debt that you still have to pay them at the current pace of you paying them.
Same! I really had a wonderful experience! Of course!! I’ll zoom in on the specific parts I’m talking about next time so that it fills the screen. Then you can see better! Oooooo I like the percentages idea! I’ll look into how to do that and see if I can add that in! You always have the best ideas! ♥️
@@EmilySweven my sentence made no sense- I meant a column stating the months you still need to pay them off. Not a whole calculation with interest added - just maybe the simple version of what’s owed entirely divided by whatever you pay each month.
It made sense to me! I understood what you meant 😊 but yes! I could do a more simple summary (lord knows my brain would prefer it) I like the idea of keeping a running tally on the same page as my budget. Maybe just down at the bottom for easier access too.
I live in London and visit Edinburgh regularly to see my friends. Absolutely LOVE your POV ❤❤❤ xxx
I loved both places!!! So beautiful 🤩 and some of the most polite and lovely people! ♥️
I hope you are enjoying your trip and concert, see you in 2 weeks 🎉
It’s been so fun so far!! 🥰
Have a good trip. Happy for you 🖖
It’s been so wonderful!! ♥️
Hey hey, if you’re leaving in 2 weeks - can you make a empty my pantry food challenge the week before. I hope you’ll enjoy your trip - maybe you can show a photo montage of the places you saw after 👏🏼
I’ll take a look into my pantry and see! I’ve cleared out a lot of ingredients in there over these few months to save money but we might be able to do a little something!! I’m so excited! I definitely plan on take pictures and videos. I may not do a lot of talking but I really want to document this trip since it’s the first time I’ve been overseas! 🥰
I worked physical jobs, but they never left me as exhausted as my current, brain-powered job. Sometimes I end up my day having burned all my brain fuel and I feel like I can't answer any basic question. LOL
Yes!!!! I feel the exact same way! Like I just need to sit in silence for a minute to just breathe out the mental sleepiness 😂
Hey hey, I’m looking forward to your debt update. I get the nervousness about the flying. For the past ten years or so, I’ve been only using trains, which is alright cause I live in Europe. You cutting your own hair is bold - holy cow. 😂
Yes! We almost had to book a plane to go between our destinations but I convinced them we could romanticize a train ride instead lol I know! There were a few places I was looking into and they all wanted about $80 for a trim lol until I can budget that better I’ll snip it myself. It’s not the best but it’s livable with how I style my hair! 😂
PS: Just a little reminder to ease the fear. Nothing will happen to you on your flights. I sent a request to the big man 👆😂 jk - I’m too invested in your videos.
Thank you!!! I will take all the thoughts a prayers I can get ♥️ at least this investment won’t cost you money! We’re on a budget!!! 😂
I like the angle. It’s very personable 😂
I’m happy you liked it!! ♥️
I would recommend a power bank or two and a shorter cable for charging on the go cause when you use the navigating app the battery will drain real fast. Also I always pack „like a bloke“ - a toothbrush, a mini toothpaste, deodorant. Shampoo, shower gel - use the stuff the hotel provides.
That’s so smart! I have a power bank from a previous trip that has a 12 hour charge so that should be perfect. Yes! I’m a notorious over-packer so my goal is to pack a bit on the lighter side since we’ll be doing a lot of hotel hopping.
Just as an FYI, UK plugs are diferent from Europe plugs, be careful to buy the right ones. Happy planing! 🎉
I definitely didn’t know that 😆 I was for sure looking at the wrong plug then lol good catch!!! ♥️
