Thank you for your support of Ukraine 🥰
No problem 😊 These paints are simply delightful and I’m happy to do so!
Made these cheese/fig treats tonight and omgoodness, they are amazing! The Gorgonzola cheese was on sale at my grocery store and almost sold out with only two containers left. Thank you so much for sharing the link to the recipe!
Hi Cheri! I’m so happy you enjoyed these! They are really delicious, aren’t they?!
Hi Ann, those paints AND the peacock are lovely. I am glad you found your video and made a new voiceover. I found the person who sells those paints on etsy.
Excellent! They are very lovely paints, indeed! Thank you Diane!
Yep, I have that exact one plus the 8x5 version ... also the red WC Handbook Journal (200gsm). Good paper, thnx for the review 😊
Great minds! ☺️
I have both the cotton and cellulose versions of the Hahnemuhle sketchbook. The cotton definitely performs better. There isn’t quite as much texture on either as I’m used to with other cold press papers so I do find I struggle a teensy bit more with hard edges. I love them both though - the cellulose one is my travel sketchbook and the cotton one is for home use (bigger format).
I agree! I do enjoy cellulose or wood pulp papers from time to time for several reasons. I will feature the cotton version soon!
Hi Ann 😃. You could wrap fabric or paper around the spine of spiral-bound sketchbooks. @missmustardseed has a video about it. I wrapped the spine of one of my spiral-bound sketchbooks and it looks amazing. The round spine lends sophistication to my bookcase 😂.
Which mineral spirit did you use usually and what kind of paste in this video?
Hello! The mineral spirits I used here is NOOD by Utrecht. Here is a link: www.dickblick.com/items/utrecht-nood-odorless-paint-thinner-118-ml-bottle/ And I’m sorry I don’t understand your question about paste. Do you have a timestamp in the video for reference? Thanks😍 (note: links may be affiliate)
I was simply enjoying the art-creation when all of a sudden my ears perked up at "affordable". 😄 Hahnemuhle has pretty much supplanted Arches as my favorite cotton watercolor paper. Now I'm gonna add this cellulose sketchbook to my wishlist. I think having non-cotton options is somewhat freeing - not as much pressure against 'wasting' the pricey stuff.
Very true! Good to have options without the added pressure of every journal page turning into a masterpiece. I suppose “affordable” is completely subjective. For context, I do not think the Etchr Perfect Sketchbook comes anywhere close to being affordable 😬
@@artonthecreek Yeah, when I saw how much they charge for their sketchbooks, I blocked ETCHR from my radar.
@INCWorks I did as well, sadly. That’s one of those things where my brain says “Ann, you can make your own, ya know…” and so the bookbinding project begins…..😅
Thank you for sharing this! Fyi, other viewers, Hahnemühle also offers a 100% cotton paper watercolor book that is really decent and affordable. In the US, its best to shop around, depending on sales, it may be cheaper to get at Blick, Amazon or Jackson's. (Jackson's- if it's only got the UK flag symbol, u have to find the sweet spot on the weight/shipping cost ratio to make it affordable but you can absolutely get some great deals even with shipping from the UK). I also love their Nostalgie paper for ink works. The pads are most affordable at Jackson's.
Thanks! Yes, the 100%cotton Hahnemühle sketchbook is hiding juuuuust off camera, waiting for its turn in the comparison lineup!🥰😉 (I agree on the Nostalgie!)
Beautiful painting, as always! I really appreciate that you used the same paints for the comparison!
Thank you Diana! I hope you could really see the difference in luminosity. It’s very apparent with the naked eye & I hope it conveyed in the video!🥰
I have these books and enjoy both. Dana Fox now has the Forest book in a spiral version which makes it much easier to use. You are correct that Kristi’s book is great for colored pencils if the watercolor makes you crazy.
Excellent! Thx for sharing! I hope others read your comment-spiral version would be very helpful!

Hello Ann…!! I adore watching watercolour paintings of the beautiful Kingfisher. The high chroma and iridescence of its feathers fill my wee watercolour heart with glee! Turquoise was meant to be used, and I try to include it in every palette I own - tricky, considering just how many I have, not because I paint a lot, oh no my friend, it’s simply that they are sooo pretty to look at! As you know, Seawhite shall be winging its way asap, but they are accompanied by many others collected over the past year. Every time I fill a box, I have to unpack it, find a bigger box and repack. And yet, I still need to use everybody’s names within your family. I wouldn’t mind, but whenever I make a much needed dent in my overflowing stash, I buy more. I despair… 🤦🏼♀️ Are you doing this as a full (and slow) tutorial for Pikes Peak? I would love to paint along. Any chance you can isolate and screenshot your lovely sketch. I want to paint now, and learn to draw even slower! Colours…. Sigh… 👩🏻🎨🖌️🎨💜💜
Hi Anita! I think that’s a great idea to tackle Pikes Peak again during this sketchbook series, and I will be on the hunt for a great reference photo to take for you all! I will even use turquoise, as I wholeheartedly agree with your sentiments about such a lovely color. I will include a link to a pdf of my line drawing of the Kingfisher in February’s newsletter🩵🧡🤗 I,too, love shopping for art supplies, so I completely understand your dilemma to find a bigger box! I’ll be watching the mail & package delivery for your wonderful boxes full of art supply gold! Thank you☺️❤️☺️❤️☺️
Hi Anne, your kingfisher is cute. So is the mouse in your Hahnemuhle sketchbook. I have a rectangular sketchbook by Hahnemuhle that I think I got in a sketchbox art subscription along time ago. I have yet to use it. I have been intimidated. I have a long way to go as an artist. I did buy a mixed media sketchbook that is hardbound by Ohuha. Becky Tregear Art has purchased it and is going to be trying a lot of things on it. I wanted to try it too, so I bought one, but a different size one. My New Year's resolution or some of them is to keep losing weight, to paint at least once a week. And I think I want to get brave and try more mediums on my new sketchbook.
Hi Diane! It sounds like you have a great year ahead! I’ll be cheering you on during your journey to better health…you got this! 💪🏼🥇 I am curious about that Ohuhu sketchbook you mentioned…I hope you enjoy it!
Replying to you again-I don’t see my initial reply posted, Diane. Sometimes tech is quite mysterious! Thank you-I’m happy you enjoyed this kingfisher. I think once you use the Hahnemühle sketchbook you’ll see it’s not too intimidating🥰 I will be cheering you on during your journey to better health…you got this!💪🏼🥇 You mentioned the Ohuhu journal before…I am curious about it! I hope you enjoy using yours🫶🏼
Hi Ann, On February 14, 1969 I was in the hospital recovering from open-heart surgery. I was seven, my younger brother was six and we were both in the same class. I got held back in first grade. Hospitals were really strixt back then about visiting hours. I was at Kaiser Permanente in Fontana California. The visiting hours were only for adults, one hour in the day, one hour at night, no siblings allowed. I was really missing my siblings and my parents because two hours a day is just not enough time with one's parents. My doctor allowed my younger brother to bring the class valentines to me on Valentine's Day. He was only allowed to stay for about ten minutes and he wasn't allowed to get close. But it meant the world to me. It was the best Valentine's Day I have ever had. And reading the Valentine cards was fun. Both my parents brought my brother, and then my dad took my brother to the waiting room where they waited for my mom at the end of the hour. And yes, back then there were two holidays for Abraham Lincoln and George Washington. I kind of wish it was still like that. But I understand wanting to honor all the presidents. I really like your cookie. And I bought that Grabie set that you used from a couple of years ago.
My recommendation would be get both, so when you want the stippling, crosshatching and marker stripes visible it will be less of a challenge.
Thanks!
Same silhouette memories of the presidents. Remember the Valentine's boxes we made? I can't remember if they were made out of Kleenex boxes or what. Everyone had to write one card to each classmate. In 1975-1977 we had a mid winter break in Minnesota. They said it was to save energy. I love my Valentine memories. We also made cards for our parents. Nice painting. Have a good February.❤❤❤😊
Hi JoAnne! Yes I loved making those Valentine boxes! Some were so elaborate! I do remember using Kleenex boxes as well as shoeboxes. Lots of crepe paper & tissue paper in those memories, too…and glue made with flour & water or that Elmer’s Paste in a jar…🫶🏼 Have a wonderful February!
For watercolour books ive only used a seawhite book and that's not too bad x
I’m very happy to hear that! The seawhite is on my wish list!!
@artonthecreek can you get it in America? X
@BeckysJourneyWithArt Amazon sells them, yes. BUT…I have a great friend in Scotland 🏴 who may have done some shopping for me…stay tuned!🥰🥳
@artonthecreek hahaha I was going to say I'd post you one over if you wanted x
@BeckysJourneyWithArt 🩷🩷🩷🩷 You are too kind!! Thank you ☺️ No need at the moment but definitely appreciate you!
Cellulose paper if direct usage ... Cotton paper if pallet usage. Thanks for the review 😊
Glad you enjoyed this one!
Very cute and now I want a biscuit lol 😆 x
🤣🤣❤️ Mission accomplished! Thanks Becky🫶🏼
And the smell of cedar that wafts up when you open the box, lol.
Hahahhahaha yessssss!🥰🥰🥰
Love the painting! The blue background really made the bird POP. I think it's good to have sketchbooks in multiple shapes and sizes. Sometimes simply having a different 'frame' can help to spark creativity.
That’s so true! Thanks, Irene💙❤️
Love leaves 🍁 my favorite leaf is the ginkgo leaf. Thanks for sharing.
Ginkgo trees have such beautiful & unique leaves! Thank you so much & have a wonderful week🫶🏼👩🏻🎨🎨
Hi Ann, i like that cute sketchbook. I recently bought Ohuhu's mixed media book. It is hard cover. Becky Tregear bought a smaller one and I am going to try and follow along with her. I still have to use it though. Currently, i am trying to organize my small art room.
Hi Diane! Huge kudos for organizing your art room! No matter the size that is simply a Herculean task for me and I’m envious of people who can figure that out on their own! I will have to check out Ohuhu’s mixed media book! Enjoy❤️❤️ Becky has some great art!
Have you tried DaVinci’s French ultramarine? That’s been my go-to for the past year.
DaVinci is the 4th Ultramarine I swatched in the video, and yes, I agree, it is one of my favorites 💙
@ yes but they make an ultramarine and a French ultramarine which is a little warmer. I was just curious if you’ve tried both and if so which you like best.
@SchubertFan ah! Sorry I misunderstood. Yes I have both and use and live them both. I wanted to use this one in the test to keep it more comparable with most brands. The French Ultramarine is soooo nice with Smalt Blue!
For $12 could be worth it to get it and swap out the paint for good watercolor
Exactly! Thats what I will do with mine😍
What a beautiful painting Ann. We don’t have this colourful bird here, and I actually first came across it in TH-cam Art Land! The paper certainly did hold up to everything you threw at it. I always struggled with the price versus cotton or cellulose, but I imagine as it’s an American brand you can purchase it cheaper there than in Europe? Looking forward to this series very much. Later around the Cauldron I shall talk sketchbooks. Again, wonderful future series and beautiful painting - one of my favourites by you! Off to see Turner Exhibition now. Slow recovery after my journey down yesterday and a VERY lazy start this morning. I shall take you with me of course, right from hotel to gallery through historic Edinburgh 😁👍🏻🎨🖌️👩🏻🎨🫶🏻
Hello my wandering friend! I’m embarrassed to realize that I’ve never asked you about the birds of Scotland! Do you have a favorite? Despite the beautiful red of the Northern Cardinal, my favorite might be the Mountain Bluebird. We’ve had a few here in Parker but even at higher altitudes they are shy little things! Their blue is the perfect candidate for Smalt Blue…hmmmmmmm 🥰 I am accustomed to paying around $15-$20 for a watercolor sketchbook of any type of paper. Are they in general less than that where you are? Enjoy Turner, know that I dearly wish I were with you, and I can’t wait to hear about your adventures!
@@artonthecreek Oh wow, a little bird the colour of Smalt blue... ❤️ My favourite is our Golden Eagle - protected and living in the mountains of the Highlands and one of our national parks out with the Highlands. I won't say where as it is a secret to protect them, but I was once privileged enough to be sitting on a boulder at the side of a farm track way up in the hills when a male Golden Eagle landed on the ancient drovers dry stone arched bridge. I was stunned. It was before I ever bother with a mobile phone and so I have no photo, but I remember every detail. It just sat there, occasionally contemplating me, but saw no threat and it was a full 15 minutes of wonder that I sat like a statue and utterly silent, yet grinning!!! The UK can be expensive due to our idiotic and gullible population voting for Brexit, but for those made in the UK itself I would say a similar price range to your own. I buy the European ones in sales or make one huge order from the Spanish art shop Artemiranda, who ship worldwide. They have fair prices and regular sales. Jacksons are expensive here despite being a UK company, and when they have a sale it is not as good for us as International buyers. 🤷🏼 Right, still not left my room - Emma called to inquire if I was still alive and we chatted 55 minutes despite the fact we are all out to dinner this evening. Obviously, I am taking you with me 🥰
@anitadavidson1266 haha a good leisurely morning! I do love the Golden Eagles-we see birds of prey including those often here…but I’ve never been so lucky as to have such a lingering encounter! That is a marvelous memory 😍 I always forget about Artemiranda! Going to scroll through their site now…. Ok girl get outta that room! Art 🖼️ awaits!!
@@artonthecreek Messages in the Cauldron 🥰
@anitadavidson1266 bubble, bubble, toil and trouble!!! See you in the stream of consciousness!
I just ordered the book. Super excited to get it and play with my paints! Thanks for sharing .
Yayyy! Thanks June☺️ I hope you really enjoy it! Sarah’s color palettes are so beautiful!
Hi Ann, Happy New Year! I recently bought the Meeden Acrylic box you showed in December and I was so surprise how much stuff is in it! I am loving all the items I can play with so great for that price! I also found out Meeden HQ and Warehouse is super close to my house! Thank You so much! Maria
Hi Maria! I’m so happy you enjoy the acrylic set!! You’re lucky to live near their HQ, too🤩 Enjoy!
Take a look at the Paul Ruben sketchbooks. I have used them before, inexpensive and hard bond. I also prefer these over spiral bond.
Yesss! I have several and will feature them in this series!! Excellent sketchbooks❤️❤️
Nice! I have the red ones (200gsm). The paper is very nice. I really like the paper & it's great for markers with brush to boot. Great orientation for urban sketching. [Haven't tried the more expensive blue (300gsm).]
They really are nice sketchbooks and I love their size selections! I’m glad you know about them!😍
For Christmas i received a Hahnemuhle Nostalgie sketchbook for mixed media. Used it for the first time today and really like it. Im not a great painter/artist but it held up for using gouache, acrylic paint pen and pencils
Hi Becky😀 I really like Hahnemühle a LOT. I have the Nostalgie sketchbook on my wish list! I’m happy to know you like using it!!
@artonthecreek I like the feel of it x

I like making my own sketchbooks - mostly hardbound or coptic bound (no spine board, similar issues with identifying on a bookshelf), but I've also done a few "semi-perfect" bound ones. I did find one of the craft spiral binders on clearance a few weeks ago, so I'll be trying that here in a bit as well. The fun of making your own is that you can choose just how you want it - size, paper, and so on. Hmmm... just had a thought. I wonder... if I made a fairly plain cover for a coptic sketchbook, then when it was full, give it a spine and nicer cover paper to convert it to a bound one. And for a spiral, a sort of book board sleeve that could slip over the coil... I've got to scramble to be ready for COSine in two weeks, but after that, I think it's time for some experimenting!
Your experiments sound really fun! I’ve made I think 3 or my own journals-each own gets better, but that is a real skill! Always great when you can choose your own paper, size, etc. completely customizable!💗 I had no idea you enjoy conventions like COSine! It’s one of those things I’ve always wanted to go to but never carved out the time. Are you making journals for the convention?
@@artonthecreek Not this time around, though I think I might still have one of the covered journals left. I'll be in the art show with polymer clay sculptures and book nooks. Come by if you'd like! It's the 24-26 of this month, and if can't do the whole weekend, Saturday is probably the best of the three.
@PhoenyxAshe OMG I think that sounds so fun! I’ve dabbled in Polymer clay but not too much-I would love to see what you’ve got going!!
@@PhoenyxAshe Your idea regarding spiral bound sketchbooks is sheer genius! I have never come close to having your idea. I do hope everyone read everyone’s comments. I like to jump in occasionally when I see something as good as your comment. Thanks for your ideas, and for sharing so generously with us all. 👍🏻📒📙
@@PhoenyxAshe Polymer clay (liked models and building scenes. My best was a graveyard for Halloween - it found a new home instantly, and my slightly newer hobby of book nook building are also my thing too! There was I thinking there was no real sense to any of my hobbies, but if you are a book nook fan, watercolour and polymer clay, they must make sense of some kind. As for you Ann @artonthecreek , was I ever aware of your polymer clay dabbling? Or…is that information held within yet another brain cell I lost along the way?
thank you for t he useful info on this. I have one but haven't used it much. Now I will glad gouache works well on it cause that's what I'm into right now. I use every type of sketch book there is! Just ordered a Hahnemuhle--spelling might be off. Not sure if it has a hard back.
Hi Suzanne! I had to teach my phone how to spell Hahnemühle! I got tired of looking it up😆 I’ve used just about every sketchbook there is, too--I think I’m a sketchbook collector! Hahnemühle makes beautiful papers. I like them too! Hope you enjoy gouache on the Speedball hand•book journal 🫶🏼👩🏻🎨🎨
It was a splurge, but I'm liking my etchr mixed media sketchbook so far. I bought a 6x6. It is cotton but not 140#.
Thanks Rebecca! I will add that one on my list to try! I’m in love with the Hahnemühle Bamboo mixed media sketchbook-it would be fun to compare that to the Etchr❤️
I have to second what the others were saying about paper. It makes a HUGE difference with these! I used them on the simple Britannia Cold Press by Hahnemuehle and you cannot see my original markings at all. I heard others prefer the Harmony Hot Pressed from the same brand or the Canson cellulose ones. They will stain cotton immediately. Also important to not let them dry (and they dry fairly quickly) if you want to still lift/mix them. Once dried they are almost comparable to my acrylic ink in staying nicely put. Though that means, if you love working in very controlled layers, they are an excellent choice. I love to lay down a base of acrylic ink and then use these to add the next layers as they stay relatively vibrant thus working great with the inks.
Great tips, Inga!! Thanks so much for sharing!
Hi Ann, I just bought this set which is amazing for that price. The best part of having a bday in January is all the great sales! Meeden is very close to my home which I was surprise so I am getting my set on my day. Thank You so much for sharing! Maria
Hi Maria! Happy Birthday Month!🥳🎂 I’m so happy you were able to treat yourself with some fun art supplies 🥰 Have fun with them & I hope you enjoy a great year ahead!
I have used both prismacolor and polychrome and learned I preferred the wax base of the prismacolor. I wanted more light fastness so felt stuck. Then I learned about the great light fastness of the luminance and that they were wax based. So I bought just one to try it out and it felt more oil based or at least less wax then prismacolor. So I am disappointed as prismas have a lot of faults but for my art the wax base excells. You mention the luminance are a mix of wax and oil. That matches my experience. Would love a competing company to make a quality wax base that would eliminate some of prismacolor faults. I had prismas from long ago and their quality once was better.
I agree-their quality has changed. The Luminance is absolutely amazing! Im in the process of going through the Derwent tiers-some are showing real promise(and I know the Derwent Lightfast is delightful) and so is the Holbein. It will be hard to narrow it down to one!!
I just bought a set of 10 to play and experiment. This video is super helpful. Thanks, Pam Tuggle
Hi Pam! Hope you have lots of fun 🤩 You can do so much with that set of 10!!
@ I thought that would be a great place to start. Thanks.😊

@@denises9455 me too!!!!
PBk7,6 is shorthand for a mixture of PBk7 and PBk6.
18:36 I saw that as a decimal point, not a comma-blame that on old eyes!🫶🏼
