SP Elite Topcoat Tutorial- UPDATED! | Artisan Design Concepts
Topcoats: the mere mention of the word can strike fear into the hearts of both DIY enthusiasts and professional epoxy/resin installers. Applying a durable topcoat to your epoxy or resin countertops is arguably the most anxiety-inducing step in the entire process. You’ve invested time and effort into creating a stunning design, and naturally, you want to protect it with a finish that’s scratch, impact, stain, and heat resistant. But achieving that perfect topcoat can be tricky, with challenges like lap lines and unwanted texture potentially marring your hard work.
We understand the struggles because we’ve been there, too. Through extensive practice, we’ve refined our technique and are here to share it with you to help make your application as smooth and stress-free as possible. (Well, maybe not entirely stress-free, but certainly less stressful!)
Important Reminder: Make sure to practice on sample pieces after watching this video to build your confidence.
Key Points to Keep in Mind:
Ratio Calculation & Mixing:
- Calculate the amount needed by multiplying the countertop’s square footage by 0.375.
- Round up to the nearest whole number divisible by 3.
- Shake Part A thoroughly and allow it to rest with the lid off for 5 minutes before mixing.
- Use a 3/8" nap roller (6" length) for large surfaces and a 1/4" nap roller (4" length) for sink and counter edges.
Surface Preparation:
- For PolyKote Pro or Enhanced, sand with 220 or 320 grit the next day.
- For PolyKote Original, wait 1-2 days until it is no longer soft or tacky.
- If the surface is outside the curing window and is no longer tacky, clean it with alcohol after sanding. Otherwise, use a microfiber towel and water. Ensure the surface is completely dry.
- Finish with a final wipe using a lint-free cloth (e.g., blue shop towel).
Installation Guidelines:
- Wait 48-72 hours before installing countertops or placing items on a top-coated surface. This timeframe may vary based on temperature and humidity conditions in your area.
With these tips and techniques, you’ll be well-equipped to achieve a flawless, protective topcoat that enhances and preserves your beautiful epoxy or resin work.

How many gallons of Epoxy did you use?? Everyone saying 4 gallons just for 1 Island, but all these videos y’all are using only 1 or 2 gallons for a entire kitchen??
What was the square footage
I have questions and would like Stacy to help me please. How can I contact her about what I want to do etc....
Hi there. Feel free to follow our Facebook page and send us a message there. Happy to answer any questions you might have.
Go easy on the spreading. Less is more. When you start spreading more it becomes too sloppy.
It was literally my first floor. Done many since then if you check out our channel.
Excellent Video 😊. New Subscriber 👍. I also Subscribed to your Facebook group. I am wanting to do my countertop a White marble look. I currently have a green/turquoise color. Do I need too prime it, because it is ugly 🤔 ❓️ I am remodeling my home and I want to kitchen too be the center of attention. Keep the video's comin.
Thank you for subscribing! What do you have on there now? Is it epoxy? If it is just send it with 220 grit really well. Then I would use Kilz Adhesion Bonding Primer followed by two coats of whatever paint and primer color you want. We use Behr brand in satin. Then scuff it up with 220 after 24 hours, wipe the dust and go for it!
ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS!!❤😊
Thank you so much!
OMFG! UR AMAZING! HOW LONG HVE U BEEN DOING EPOXY FOR AND DID IT TAKE U LONG TO GET SOOOOOO GOOOOD!!😮😊❤
Awww 🥰 thank you! I've been doing this for a little over five years now. It definitely takes time to hone your skill and find the techniques that you are drawn to. I found that I had a natural eye for color and flow. Not every design came easy I assure you lol! Definitely just practice a lot!
@ArtisanDesignConcepts Thank you for the advice!! I would LOVE to do this full-time. I just know I need to practice a lot! Also I don't really know where to start to be able to do it full time lol....I do know it's a ways away! Lol
These are all so cool!! What is the material you're pouring over in this video?
Thank you. We are pouring over MDF.

Is fiberglass mesh recommended for shower walls with polykote?
@@missyballard5866 yes I would use it in order to give the panel strength and rigidity.
Is it scratch resistant without the protective top coat? I'm thinking of ordering some to try out. During the next holiday here in November if it scratch resistant without the protective top coat. Also do you have a video of putting on the protective top coat?
The new Enhanced version gets the hardest out of all of the versions but anything high gloss without a topcoat will get fine scratches over time. It's recommended to use a topcoat. I think we posted a video on how to apply but it might be a bit old. We have a kitchen curing now and we will video applying the topcoat and post it.
Gorgeous! It looks like wrap resin doesn’t sell nebula anymore. Any recommendations for a similar mica?
Thank you! They still sell it. Reach out to Trey Hudson at (817) 475-9173 or Trey@WrapResins.com. He can get it ordered for you. Their website isn't updated.
You are the best, my favorite family
You are so kind 😘
How long is the working time?
Working time depends on which version. The Original is 45 minutes or so. Pro and Enhanced closer to 35.
How many years have they done testing to know that it doesnt yellow?
They use a weather accelerator to test long-term exposure.
That did not work.
Thanks for watching
Wow
Thank you so much!

Beautiful! 💕🙌🏼 I think after seeing all your videos, techniques and color palettes this might be the one I go with! If I want to make it a little darker/not quite as white what do you recommend with the change of technique and/or adjustment to the products I purchase? Can you use isopropyl alcohol on this as well?
Thank you. I would just adjust the ratio a bit. Do you want more brown in there?
@@ArtisanDesignConceptsless brown but want warm grays. I just bought all the supplies for SCC and I couldn’t find the wrap resins nebula or dry ice. I was going to try to call them to see if they still make it since it’s not on their site.

Glad you like it! Thank you!
Knocked it out of the ball park. Awesome video Staci♥️
Thank you so much!
Love it!!! I backed off of the epoxy business because of the Amber complaints. Nice to see there’s something else available that has a non-yelling formula.
Yes we were thrilled when PolyKote launched! Now we can truly stand behind our work!
Looks great!!!
Thanks!! Appreciate that!!
Do you find this brand to be as durable as Stone Coat? Just stumbled on your videos and have been researching them a ton! I’m reading that resin is less durable than epoxy? I’m a newbie admittedly and welcome your thoughts!
Yes I do! It's actually more durable in my opinion! The PolyKote Enhanced which is the newest release is my favorite. It feels like epoxy. No VOCs. Non yellowing. And gets super hard! They now have a small sample kit of it available so you can try it out. Check their website www.savagepatriotpolymers.com
Absolutely Stunning 🤗 That turned out VERY NICE 🤗,THX for sharing 🤗
Thanks so much 😊
not a huge fan of the big blobs of Greg but its good to see how to do it.

Can this be done over granite counter top? What would you recommend for tile floors?
Yes absolutely. There's a couple things you need to do differently on top of granite versus new fabrication though. Are you on Facebook? If you are, I recommend joining our group where you can post the same question and I can give a lot more detailed answers than on TH-cam. The group is called Artisan Academy - Epoxy & Coatings. But the short answer is absolutely you can do it over granite. In terms of floors, that's a very different process. We would recommend removing the tile and grinding the concrete, filling all cracks, holes and divots. It requires a moisture vapor barrier, a nice heavy 100% solids epoxy primer, a thicker color coat using a low viscosity epoxy and a urethane topcoat. We can definitely share more in our group.
so is the idea .... remove your old counters to do this ? what is the product cost?
Ideally yes, best practice is to remove the old countertops, fabricate new, pour and then Install. If that's not an option, you can pour over your existing countertops depending on what they are. Some surfaces need different prep than others. The materials will range based on what you're using and if you are fabricating or not. But to check out the price of the resin we are using please check out www.savagepatriotpolymers.com
Si trés bon il est trés bélle
Thank you so much!
you did an amazing job!! can you pls come to my home and do this
Awww thank you!! Where do you live?
Me encanto.
Thank you so much!
I realize you're filming a video, but people should really wear a mask at all times when working with these materials. Not because of the fumes but because the particulates of those materials are nasty chemicals.
You are correct. Wearing a mask is the safest option.
Can this same design be done with Stone Coat ART COAT?
Possibly but I don't recommend it. That epoxy, and all epoxy, will yellow. Why create a beautiful design that you'll only enjoy a year or so when you can create it with PolyKote and guarantee it won't yellow? Additionally I never got these types of effects so easily when using epoxy. If you want an epoxy feel, use the new PolyKote Enhanced.
@@ArtisanDesignConcepts is that why you use white spray paint for detail work on some of your designs?
@@deborahfischer5708I used to use it a lot but now I really don't use white spray paint in my pours as it can change colors as well. Epoxy is the main culprit though. It's just how it's made. That's why we recently switched.
how practical is this on counters in your home ....seems messy and a pain and what is the product cost ?
Well there are two options. You can hire someone to fabricate new counters and create the mess offsite like we do or you can do it yourself and with proper prep and set up you can minimize the mess. Resin is sticky and can be messy but if you prep right, it's manageable. Cost will be determine by which option you go for, how much work there is to do, etc... For product cost, visit www.savagepatriotpolymers.com
Could you tell me the heater tool you are using? A fire torch?
I used a heat gun.
do they make a gloss top coat without the grit thats scratch resistant
Unfortunately there's really no such topcoat that has both durability and smooth surface without any texture. The texture is what gives it the scratch resistance. There are other products on the market that promote a glass look with scratch resistance but I've found that though they are great for chemical resistance, not so much for scratches. Anything smooth and shiny will get fine micro scratches over time.
@@ArtisanDesignConcepts exactly im with u... the search continues
Do you recommend poly kote over stone counter epoxy
Are you asking if you can pour over other epoxy surfaces or over stone countertops?
@@ArtisanDesignConcepts no I was asking would you recommend polykote over regular epoxy or stone coat epoxy for use? I’m trying to do my counters and this will be my first time epoxying so I’m trying to find out the best
@@lovelytbaby5393 I would recommend skipping the epoxy altogether and just using PolyKote. Specifically I recommend the new PolyKote Enhanced which looks and feels much like epoxy as it is thicker with no VOCs and very little smell, but it will not yellow like epoxy will.
Excellent work mam, but is this heat resistant?
Thank you! Yes indeed it is! We recommend using the SP Elite Topcoat from Savage Patriot for highest durability. Here's a video showing its durability SP Elite Topcoat Durability Testing th-cam.com/video/q5r2IwMLqXg/w-d-xo.html
what a mess
Thanks for watching
Hi can you teach me
Keep watching our videos. Classes coming in the future.
Stunning!❤️
Thank you! 😊
How long it takes to dry
The Pro version is dry to the touch in 2-3 hours depending on your temperature and humidity. We still wait for the next coat until the following day but you could technically do a flood coat later the same day. If you use the original it will be more like six or seven hours before it's somewhat touchable but stays softer and you definitely don't want move forward until the next day. They recently launched the Enhanced version which looks and feels more like epoxy but still has the cure time of the pro.
Скажите пожалуйста,какие вы цвета использовали?
I share the recipe in the beginning of the video
❤❤❤❤😂
Has this product been used in Motorhome applications? I did a countertop with Stonecoat and we closed blinds when storing it. It yellowed within a year on some areas and 1-1/2 yrs on other sections.
We haven't had a motorhome job since switching to this product but I'm confident it won't yellow. I would just make sure for the longevity of the countertops that you make sure the windows are shaded so it's not getting a lot of direct sun.
It the finished product smooth enough? I don't have any idea on epoxy flooring carecter.
The finish is very smooth but we choose to add a urethane topcoat which has a bit of texture to help with durability.
Hey so were you able to do all of that over the tile floor ? If so that’s amazing.
No the carpet was removed and the epoxy pebbles. We can go over tile by doing a concrete overlay but removing any tile is best practice.
@@ArtisanDesignConcepts even with wood underneath ?
Excellent job! I am planning to paint my kitchen counter top which is made of Formica! Do you think this will work for me?
Absolutely! Order the Savage Patriot Promoter that will help bond the PolyKote to it really well. Be sure to prep the surface and edges properly. If you want more guidance join our group on Facebook called Artisan Academy - Epoxy & Coatings
