Remove These 9 Things From Your Resume IMMEDIATELY
You’ve likely received tons of advice about what to INCLUDE in your resume. This video is about what *NOT* to include in your resume. Resumes that lead to job interviews are ones that are carefully crafted to leave out the fluff and to leave out anything that might disqualify you from the job. Watch this video and then go update your resume immediately.
Episode notes:
1 - The objective statement… you know… this is the one at the top of the resume where you write that you’re looking to find a fast paced job in a challenging environment where you can grow your skills as an underwater basket weaver. This statement never gets anyone hired, it is only served to disqualify you. The resume reviewer looks at it and says… ah… too bad… we have openings for basket weavers… but we don’t do it underwater. So this resume goes in to the trash.
2 - Your picture. I know Social Media and Linkedin tell us that we always need a picture with everything we do or touch now… but unless you’re applying for a modeling job the hiring folks don’t really need to see your picture. In fact it’s often viewed as tacky and unprofessional.
3. Hobbies and interest UNLESS they are relevant to the job
Do you like to play the harmonica in your spare time? Well unless you’re applying for a job in
If you’re applying for a software development job and one of your “hobbies” is developing indie video games for mobile phones then absolutely put it in! However you can leave the fact that you participate in those civil war reenactments on weekends for your facebook page.
Now this won’t disqualify you… but it’s really just a waste of space on your resume… and a waste of the resume reviewers time to read it.
4. References
Many people list references on their resume… if the recruiter wants references they will ask you for them. This is another one that serve to disqualify you depending upon who you list.. I once reviewed a resume where the applicant listed their DENTIST as their reference. Most employers don’t bother to contact references… particularly the ones you list… because you’re only going to list the positive ones.
5. Soft skill buzz-words
You know… things like “Critical thinker” “Highly Motivated” “Team Player”
Instead of using those buzz words, demonstrate how you are a team player by instead describe how you’ve worked with large teams and coordinated across many different people.
CareerBuilder asked 2,201 US hiring managers: "What résumé terms are the biggest turnoffs?" They cited words and phrases such as, "best of breed," "go-getter," "think outside the box," "synergy," and "people pleaser."
6. I
It’s your resume… it’s about you… just leave off I.
Even worse is “we” -- because then the resume reviewer doesn’t know what YOU actually did.
And even even worse is writing in the third person…. And listing your name “Chris invented a new machine for underwater basket weaving”
7. Unprofessional E-mail Addresses
Your AOL or Compuserve e-mail addresses
Recruiters are looking for tech-savvy candidates. Aol and Compuserv addresses just scream that you haven’t really embraced this whole internet thing.
Also if your e-mail is “HandsomeDude44” you might want to consider just getting one that’s your first and last name @ gmail.com.
DEFINITELY not your current companies work e-mail address
8. Really old job positions
Today it doesn’t really matter what you did more than 15 years ago. Especially if your previous jobs were working at McDonalds and you’re now in the nursing field. It’s better just to leave those old unrelated positions off, and use more of the space on your resume for your most recent experience.
9. Big words
Your goal should be to make your resume as easy to read as possible. So you don’t use like “Myriad options” when you could just say “Many options” -- but the way… if you don’t know what the word Myriad is… it means many… and please don’t say “A myriad of options” that doesn’t make any sense! And smaller words take up less space, so you can get more room on your resume for the stuff that matters.

4:20 Absolutely Chris! This is overlooked by so many people. I echo your sentiments on professionalism. There are some people that I have worked with, and still work with, that I would rather not be working with shall we say. However, I am paid well to do a job, and I need to be professional at all times even if they are not. Generally I wear them down with kindness. It might take a few years, but saying hello every day, how was your weekend, turns into longer conversations, and usually wins them over longer term.

This has a vibe of someone who reads management books, but doesn't have practical experience. The advice is banal, and doesn't consider situations where the boss isn't willing to listen despite the employee doing everything as this video advises. It would be helpful to do a followup video that addresses these points, and includes some real life examples of these points. Bonus points if it can give some pointers for how to handle some common resistances from bosses to change, since that's typically the real issue in most workplaces. Doubt the one employee complaining is the only person seeing the problem or no one else has tried bringing it up.

Rubbish! what do you mean you get fatter because you are nearer your fridge. what a load of baloney! you are in charge of what food you eat. you can just as easily be in the offce and eat junk all day long. do you really think a vending machine contains healthy food? i see people in our office alday long having soft drink after soft drink. eating fast food. i'd much rather eat a healthy lunch i prepeare myself from my own fridge than a life of junk food at an office! and you can too! its called a life choice! you can choose to be a fat person or you can eat real food, not over eat understand calroies and chemical in food and live a happy and heality life. also do you not have internet at your house? surely this wont be an extra considering you already pay for internent access?

Should I report a complaint about this manager at work? He jokingly told me not to enter the women's bathroom, but that's not the problem. Later, he approached me and put a hand on my shoulder, while telling me he was just kidding. _That's_ the potential issue. He put a hand on me. Should I report him for that? I was always taught that hands to yourself is crucial at work, aside from handshakes, high fives, or fist bumps. What should I do? I think what he did is considered crossing the line, isn't it?

I’m starting my second week on the new job, I ‘be been taking only 15 minutes out of my 1 hour break since day 1, as that’s what everyone does there, they all eat on their desk to “optimise time”. I’ve been going to the canteen and getting to know people from different sectors. They have no time to show me what I’m expect to do, therefore I can’t help them/do my job. Even though I’ve been staying minimum an hour an a half overtime simply because I have to wait for them to me me when to leave. I’m on an annual contract, not by the hour, the salary is low average anyway. Today I asked if I’ll be getting paid for overtime or should I write down the extra hours to get free time whenever they can allow me. I might lose my job as everyone seems to do it quite happily, but if I can’t even plan the few hours I have after work for someone else’s incompetence on delegating, then I can see myself losing my motivation completely and simply leaving in less than a month. It’s such a such as I believe I have some much to bring to the company and everyone seems really nice, it’s near my house.

  • @bigbluebuttonman1137

This is really helpful. Personally, I wanted to work some OT hours at my fast food restaurant to replace someone else’s hours (they quit), but thinking about it, the answers about productivity apply extra hard to fast food. Yeah, you can work OT and get paid 50% more for a lot of “dead space” in the day because all of the money is made from the mid day rush, not from closing the store, or from not selling food. If pay is defined as “What you’re worth,” you’re kind of not being paid what you’re worth, unless you really are filling that OT with something to do that assists productivity. But what exactly can you do there in the fast food industry? They’ve had decades to make everything fast and efficient. This doesn’t change even if you’re being paid “the proper wage,” because then OT would kick in regardless and go way, way above that. The case for it then drops from a productivity case to “Well, you basically have no life, so you need to be paid more.” In a necessity-based, compensatory context, this makes sense. In a voluntary “I want money” context, not really, unless you can really prove that the work in OT is proportional to the pay increase. There’s of course the problems of working more and more for work-life balance, but other things get in the way of OT.

    • @NWforager
      @NWforager 2 ปีที่แล้ว

i did lots of OT in fastfood . got whole workouts in on the clock . now-a-days you can run whole businesses on your phone on the clock during slow time . do research , learn languages ............ get paid .
