      The word "homestead" is widely used on both sides of the Atlantic. I am however not in England, I am in Wales. It is originally an English word, from the Old English "hamstede" meaning "a settlement" (according to the OED). It pre-dates the establishment of what we consider today to be America by some centuries.

    Nice to see you Stephanie! Don't worry re how many videos you get around to doing - only so much you can do in a day! I have a touch of 'polytunnel envy'....one day I may have a good sized green house if I make room! I do have a few small greenhouses around my yard which works reasonably well. Here in Australia, well, where I am which is Blue Mountains in NSW, we're having a coolish spring with some big winds. I'm waiting for my tomatoes to get going. A few have popped up so a good sign. We have a short summer up here in our cool climate. Not sure what our summer will be yet. There are forecasts of a hot wet summer. See what happens. All the best.

      @stephaniehaffertyhomesteading 21 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      I hope you have a good summer there Sue. Here the spring was cool and lacked sunshine, and the summer much the same, and so much rain. It's been the worst growing year I can recall in 30 years.

    Wonderful tunnel. Is it mesh in the top door panels? Do you ever seal those top panels (how?), or is it ventillation 24/7? :)

    • @stephaniehaffertyhomesteading
      @stephaniehaffertyhomesteading หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes it is a fine mesh and the ventillation is 24/7 year round, unless the temperatures fall significantly when I drape horticultural fleece, bubble wrap or spare polytunnel plastic over the doors inside the tunnel. I have cup hooks on the wooden door frame for this purpose

    • @marcinjurdzinski8344
      @marcinjurdzinski8344 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks, very valuable advice! One more thing I've noticed: you have a wooden rail along one side of the tunnel, but not along the other one. What is its function? Before I build my tunnel, I'm also looking for a way to harvest rainwater from it. Do you have one? Is it merely a nice-have, or is it essential?

    • @stephaniehaffertyhomesteading
      @stephaniehaffertyhomesteading หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@marcinjurdzinski8344 yes I had that installed when it was contracted for rain water harvesting. This was meant to be a project for last winter but it rained so much that I was unable to do so. Hopefully this winter. The reason is it not also down the other side is because I want to try a different harvesting method there.

  • @TheSilverstormbengal

    Great! Love the ceramic containers as they don’t leach micro plastics. I wonder how big they can be? If using plastic always transfer into a new one every so often. Would love to know why the leaves and grass have to be dry if you are just going to pour water on them ?

    • @stephaniehaffertyhomesteading
      @stephaniehaffertyhomesteading 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The leaves are dried as in old and dry, rather than fresh from the tree. It doesn't matter if they are wet from rain or dew, just that they are old leaves I show using plastic because that is affordable and accessible for many. The container is food grade which makes it more stable.

    Hi from New Zealand. I was interested in the brief reference to ants. I must admit I have been aiming to eradicate the nests because one ant colony I found was beneath the roots of an ornamental that was suffering. I am also conscious that they run a highway on my citrus. I have done very light reading which mentions some benefits to ants in the garden but also a lot of negatives. A little confused now.

    Hi Stephanie, I love watching your videos. You mention rodents. Do you have problems with rabbits? I live in a rural area too and have a big problem with them. The little blighters are everywhere! I've surrounded each of my raised beds with anti rabbit wire mesh - like chicken wire but smaller holes - but it makes it difficult to get into the bed to weed. Do you have any suggestions for someone on a budget? I would love to put a fence around my plot like Huw Richards has done on his self sufficiency garden, but it's too costly to do that.

    • @stephaniehaffertyhomesteading
      @stephaniehaffertyhomesteading 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don't have rabbits here, thankfully, and I hope they don't discover the garden! I've not seen Huw's rabbit fencing but for sure large scale fencing would be unaffordable for many people (his is a business so fair enough). Cloches covered with netting can help to deter rabbits. It won't keep out a really determined bunny but can encourage them to hop off elsewhere.

    Silly question but because you grow so many varieties do they not cross pollinate at all. Your poly tunnel looks great and full and such an exiting time of year. Me too wish for dryer summer here in the soggy west of Ireland. Thank you for sharing and love the idea of long lasting toms.

      No question is silly :-) They might, but as they are self-pollinating the risk is small. I hope you get a dry summer too, we all need one with a sensible amount of rainfall and plenty of warmth and sun

      @@stephaniehaffertyhomesteading yes understand that gives me new hope for next year as always worried about the monopoly seed companies and other factors have over us. So I will rethink tomato plan next year. Thank you so much.

    I am trying the long keeping tomato hanging prince this year, it will be interesting. I have been planting some of my 15 varieties in the tunnel today, I always enjoy trying new varieties 🍅

    Haha! I find last year's labels dotted around too! Getting the tomatoes out has to be one of the best jobs of the year - the smell of summer

    Really interesting about the long keeping tomatoes - I'd never heard of those before but they sound like a great idea for next year. I'll look forward to seeing how they get on 👍

      They are so useful. It's great having some tomatoes that can be stored without having to do anything much with them. I've had De Colgar last until the following spring
