Apple Mac Mini M4 Pro Unboxing and Benchmarks. MacMini
I decided to take the plunge and buy a baseline Mac Mini M4 Pro model.
12-core M4 Pro CPU
24GB Unified Ram
512GB SSD
In this extremely short, silent, and lazy video, I wanted to quickly show you its unboxing and some benchmarks.
It's impressive in its performance. SSD speeds particularly.

    Maybe I just missed it, but he never mentions the brand name of the M.2 adapter used in the video (or in the notes), which is important, because there are adapters that work with most NVMe devices, and many that don't work at all or only work with limited NVMe devices. I recently performed a similar upgrade on my 2013 MacBook Pro 15" Retina, replacing the factory Apple 512GB SSD with a 1TB Crucial P3 Plus. In my case, I followed recommendations and bought a Sintech NGFF adapter. I had also tried a different brand, but that did not work at all and the Crucial NVMe was not even recognized by the system. Thankfully, the Sintech adapter worked first time and is proving to be a valuable upgrade, almost doubling the performance of that drive over the Apple SSD (Apple: read=780MB/s, Crucial+Sintech: 1600MB/s). I also own a couple Mac mini 2014 models, one of which, the i7, has a 256GB Apple 2.5 inch SSD (I got it for a good price on EBay), Since no NVMe was ever installed, I should only have to install the adapter and new NVMe as shown here. Sintech also makes their NGFF adapter for the 2014 Mini and it's sold on Amazon for less than $20. Based on my prior experience with using their adapter in my MBP, I plan to give that one a try first. And BTW, I disagree that APFS is only good for SSDs. On top of being way more modern and robust than HFS+, it has one feature that I use a lot -- you can create APFS container (sub) volumes practically at will and destroy them without needing to re-partition the disk. That's essentially what macOS does with the system and Data volumes on the boot drive. These APFS volumes all share the drive's physical space, but you can assign reserved and quota sizes for individual volumes, which comes in handy if you want to create a Time Machine volume to be shared with your home network. I pretty much only use APFS these days when formatting new volumes. HFS+ is really only handy for drives that you need to connect to older Macs that can't understand APFS, and there's very few of those around today.

    Just want to let people know that you do not need to buy this adapter if you already have the fusion drive. You can by the adapter head that fits into the slot already and then put into your new NVME into that and use the same stand-off from your original Apple Blade SSD. Also some Chinese branded SSD are making “Apple Blade SSD” clones now so you can just do a simple swap with no adapters. Use at your own risk with off brands but people on Mac Rumors have has some luck with them.

      @ I don’t think I can put links here without getting flagged but they sell the adapter on Amazon that fits the traditional nvme and slides into the Apple proprietary connection that already comes with the “Fusion Drive.” Sintech NGFF M.2 for MacBook Pro Late 2013-2015 fits into the Mini with the 128gb Fusion drive or 256gb-1tb for $10.

    I’m torn between the 12/16 and 14/20 just because the extra to performance core that might be useful for future-proofing but maybe if I’m going to use this mac mini for at least 4-5 years from now the 12/16 will be enough and the m8 pro (or whatever it might be called) base model would be much more powerful so I can just upgrade.

    • @DataHombre
      @DataHombre 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for your thoughts and comment. Basically, you should be fine with the base Pro model, I feel, for most daily tasks for years to come. Unless you are doing cpu / gpu intensive work daily and really could benefit from the extra boost and saving time... I feel it may not be worth it, and if you are one of those users, where almost like your job depends of the Mac Mini performance, then upgrading the base Pro may make more sense. Remember that buying from Apple also gives you a good return policy, so even if you make the wrong choice, you have 2 weeks to do your tests and solidify decision, and can return / exchange for another model.

Good news on the SSD anyhow, maybe apple learned a lesson on M2.

    • @DataHombre
      @DataHombre 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi there. Thanks for commenting. It's hard to know what to do. Likely the baseline Pro variant will be enough for 95% of daily tasks, however if that extra performance is meaningful to your usage then perhaps it might be worth it. Here's the way I see it... I myself only seldomly make videos at this time or dabble into any cpu / gpu intensive tasks, and to be honest even this base Pro is an overkill, however if I was perhaps making more videos and was thinking of saving time and needing to export them faster or something like that, then perhaps I would worry about more performance. This is just one example. I'd say look at your workloads and kind of try to do the math and go from there for buying decisions, and add some future proofing into it and you should be fine. :)

In my opinion ---> The 2nd config is the max level you can upgrade the Mac Pro 5.1 line as far as CPU specs go, however the first one seems to be overall a better value for the money, I think, as you get NVME storage, a solid GFX card, and more ram. I think for games, there is not much edge to either config, and keep in mind that these are now 14 years old or so, so not going to be performing well for most modern games of today (if you run through Bootcamp/Windows), however your milage may vary based on the age of the game you are playing, and perhaps 5 year old or older games may be more acceptable in performance. Can't give a definitive answer here, as it's highly subjective.

    I’m really divided between buying a more recent Mac mini and one of this old Mac pro. The main reasons that are holding me back from the current gen are: - lack of upgradeability - limited support to other os I currently work on a old mb pro 2012 (non retina) with upgraded ram and disk but I don’t need the portability anymore and instead I would like to have multiple monitors. I’m a maker and I tinker with fusion 360/cad programs, VMs, microcontrollers etc While I can mitigate the support Of other oss using VMs on other machines in my home lab, I really can’t get over the lack of upgrades to ram and storage.

      Thanks for commenting. You could try perhaps a Mac Mini 2018 i7 6-core, and go the avenue of an eGPU (80% as good as internal PCI-E based eGPU), as an option. This will give you latest OS updates, much cheaper entry price than an M-series Mac, and retain legacy x86/x64 compatibility. Other choice could be an i9 MacBook Pro from 2019, which has a good internal GPU and also with thunderbolt 3 could take on future eGPU upgrades. Finally, M1 MacMinis are super cheap nowadays, so if you are able to snatch one with 16GB ram and decent SSD size, that's also a great cheap entry point, however legacy support for x86/x64 environments may be a bit lacking, as I think you would need to go the way of Parallels / VMFusion in Linux/Win for ARM flavours, which as great as they are, in my opinion, stick lack deeper dive type support for drivers and features that otherwise are x86/x64 native, as ARM Linux/Win emulate x86/x64 code internally and this works well for basic use, but not as well for deep dive type stuff.

      @@DataHombre I considered a Mini 2018 for a short moment, but these are nowhere near the power the 2013 offers, for CAD the D500 is still very capable where a HD630 is not. And good luck finding a Mini with 64GB for little money, where RAM is almost every time maxed out to 64GB when I see a 2013 MP.

    Just got one full spec 12 core 2.7ghz duel d700 gpu (12gb) 128gb ram, 4tb nvme. I paired mine with a sonnet rack for mac pro. Got mine for 935gbp. Its a powerhouse for a music production environment

    • @DataHombre
      @DataHombre ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh wow. That's pretty awesome. Good job. I hear that there is still software out there for music production that is intel centric. Is this why you are using a Mac Pro 2013 / Intel Mac?

    • @Da4knessFall5

      @DataHombre tbh I want to get a mac studio full spec but if I wait about 2 years I can prob snag an m2 ultra full spec for 4k gbp gives me time to save ect. But the mac pro 2013 is an amazing deal if you pair it with a good spec sonnet mac rackmount enclclosure. I have 3x pci slots for pcie devices, usb expandability vs the full spec mac 2013 mac pro. Another thing is (honestly) about 70ish percent of NY aoftware is legit not pirated (at 1 point all My software was pirated as was most musicians when you start out) I wanted a machine that still had some.backwards compatability with some of the cracked plugins I havnt bought yet. I genuinely am buying software have the native instruments 13 ultimate, isotope producer edition, loads of synths, arturia (all plugins except like 1 or 2 of the newer ones in last 3 months) I still need to purchase a few more kontakt instruments (I'm about 30% legit with kontakt) and waves mercury and I'm 100% legit

    You can use a little of isopropanol and a thin spatula or knife to easily remove the flex of the original SSD.

    I guess if your budget is around $500 tops, and you need a desktop Mac it's a choice between an upgraded trash can, or a new base-line M2 Mac Mini. Imho. it comes down to do you need more than 8GB of RAM and 256 GB of SSD? If I had a Trashcan Mac, I'd probably continue to upgrade it and keep it for another year or two, at least until M3 ships, and maybe Apple improves the basic RAM and SSD specs. But honestly, I wouldn't recommend a Trashcan Mac as a new computer purchase for two reasons: (1) with the M2 Mini you can eventually add SSD external storage as needed. It's a desktop, so having to rely on an external HD isn't a problem for most people. (2) the M2 Mini will get software updates for at least five years into the future. The Trashcan is at the EOL as far as MacOS updates are concerned. Yes, you can use OpenCore Legacy Patcher to run unsupported MacOS on it, but sooner or later Apple will completely drop Intel support from future releases and OpenCore won't be any use. Apple shipped their first Intel Macs in 2006, and dropped PowerPC support with 10.6 Snow Leopard three years later in 2009. Based on that timeline, I wouldn't be surprised if MacOS Sonoma is the last version of MacOS that will support Intel.

    • @DataHombre
      @DataHombre ปีที่แล้ว

      Excellent points. I think too that latest and greatest OS support for the intel lines will fade away sooner rather than later, as you said. The saving grace is that say for the argument sake you are using Ventura on an Intel mac because Sonoma won't support Intel, you still will get to use your apps and get updates for apps, but this too eventually goes away as vendors transition to M line fully. You have to consider purchase price, performance, and timeline into your decision, as you indicated. :)

      No, only x2 link. So your 3.0 or 4.0 NVME will fall back to x2 speeds.

      2019 preferably, as it doesn't use the butterfly keyboard style anymore, which had issues for some people. Also 2019 will have a slightly newer Intel processor and graphics, so if you can, 2019 would be better,

    Great video! I'm trying to repurpose the same type of Mac Mini. Could you provide the make and model for the M.2 converter you used? Have been surfing the web for something of that kind, but I only find sketchy products that I don't want to buy. Do you have any idea as to if the Mac has any restrictions on make and/or model for the M.2 stick itself?
