Hi. After long drive from San Diego to San Antonio, Texas-had urge to get back on the board. Shout out to Aaron at Insanity Boardshop to have the Magnums and to Zac Sharp, who knows Aaron from his years downhill competing and owning a skate shop in Austin, TX. Truly a small world. Hi. Happy New Year’s Eve and follow up to the recent short video. An amazing confidence booster in today’s “last 2024 session”. Started slow with Cuei Steeze because I use them in the past and knew they could be controlled with cool red thane. Bummed I somehow flat spotted the front right wheel, but they did the job to warm me up and build confidence to try first slides on Venom Mach 1 Cannibal...

Looks like good fun. Personally, as much fun as sliding is, i dont like to slide unless i have to. I just like to go as fast as i can thru straights and wide turns. Best feeling ever
Absolutely - I love the speed, too. Amazing session today and ended with 38 mph - and much as speed was nice-first time I felt confident in tuck lean.
Is that an e-board
@WedrawonSTUFF3845 no, it’s downhill skateboard (Owen Fox by Prism skateboards). Set up with 10 in Caliber 3 trucks, Venom bushings & Venom Mach 1 Cannibals.
Oh I skate board and I was like uhhh how is he going so fast it doesn’t look like it’s down hill
@WedrawonSTUFF3845 Cool you’re skating and having fun. the angle of view may be tricky, but I had actually just finished doing a 34 mph speed run on this hill before fails on Coleman sides.
Honestly, I love carving. Before I could do any slide, I would just go to hills and carve down it like a snake, using carving as the only form of speed control. It was great fun, but not as fun as sliding. 😂
@@nickamarit Thats cool & makes sense. have a deeper appreciation for it now as it’s my main warm up and confidence builder. Hopefully as I improve, the carving will lead to stand up skills & confidence. Agree, good for basic speed control, but not as fun as siding. 😆🤘
Btw, I saw on Insanity's website, they got the new Pantheon 73mm Meatballs (and the smaller 66mm Sliders) in stock. They come in 74A (blue) and 78A (black), and personally, I think the 74A seem very interesting.
Thanks. I’ll check them out. It’s a wonderful thing having a local longboard shop like Insanity board shop. All good fun. 🤘
You can send the flatspotted wheel to be lathed back into roundness, but you'll lose a lot of the meat in the process. Sliding with flatspotted wheels usually makes the flatspots get bigger and bigger.
Thanks and really wrote the wheels off. Odd that I flat spotted front right wheel and I think actually from deep pressure during toe slide? Guess too much? Oh well. All refinements of balance and pressure? All fun learning.
@@cantskate5535 Flatspots really only happen when the wheel slides without spinning at the same time as it's sliding. If you're rotating the board to exactly 90 degrees to the direction of travel to initiate the slide, then it will usually cause a flatspot (and will usually slide further). I try to avoid this by keeping my sliding angles less than 90 degrees, but it causes the board to also turn as it slides as well as brake much more in a slide. So you gotta compensate for the turning (by planning a slide trajectory) and the extra braking force (with more lean). But it's worth it because I never got any flatspots before.
Thanks, Nick. Very helpful. I’ll have pay closer to attention to that because I’ve done it to 3 sets of wheels in last year.
@@cantskate5535 If you do pendy slides (such as the Coleman, push up, or toeside glovedown pendy - the 3 pendy slides that you do), then you can rotate past 90 and slide at a slightly >90° angle for a while before pulling it back around. edit: If you manage to catch the exact slide that made your wheels flatspot on camera, then you can try and see what you may want to do differently form-wise.
Thank you. Truthfully, I don’t have clear understanding of weight distribution of my weight on the board when sliding. Still fairly new, but in more practice sessions-I’ll become more aware.
Cornering in a tuck is called "tuck leaning". It's probably the fastest way to corner on a longboard.
Thanks, Nick. Looking forward to practicing more tuck leaning. Amazingly fun with Magnums as well as Cannibals. Felt more comfy getting into lower position.
@@cantskate5535 You should definitely look into getting narrow trucks to fit your Mags better. Your current trucks are turtling the Mags so much I'm getting wheelbite-anxiety just from seeing it. lol I used the rail match calculator to calculate the truck width you need for a 9.25"-wide deck on (the previous version of) Mags. And the truck hanger width that is most perfect is 130mm. If you want to continue to use your Cals, you can send your hangers to be chopped down to 130mm by machinists. Otherwise, just try new trucks in that width range.
@ haha wheelbite anxiety - lol. Thanks for the info and I have 2 sets of 130 mm trucks (Seismic and I think Bear?). I brought them from CA this weekend so will be tinkering on a couple other boards for 130 mm and Mags. Will try them out and see how they feel. Historically I have done horribly on 130 mm, but guessing contact size will make a difference.
@@cantskate5535 I redid the rail match calculator on a 9.25 deck, but this time I selected flipped Mags, and it said the best hanger size is 150mm. So if you flip them, your 158mm Calibers will have a slightly better fitment. Much less turtling. edit: Or are your Calibers 184mm?
This is a really interesting conversation. Appreciate the free food for thought on the rail calculator.
Im just learning to skate with my kids and the gear definitely helps lol
Oh yeah - congrats. Have fun.
What was that foot placement
It was normal at about 30 degrees & facing forward, but when I did my last kick-foot slid on the inside of the shoe and then ate it. If I had not gone for my 5th kick, it would have been fine. I changed to my other shoes I wear regularly and are much tighter.
You are an absolute star Sir....really cool to see you going for it at 55...you're inspiring me to get out on the hills 🤩💪💪
Thank you. Just staying active and having fun in learning by failing, but will never stop trying. 🤘👊
@cantskate5535 ..falling is how we truely learn....everything 🙂🙏💪
I'm 61 and got back into skateboarding at 50 after 35 years. Was never that good, but loved it...and love it to this day. Street skating through town with my two small boys...what a dream come true. I proficient on a board, but tricks apart from a few are not my forte. I intend to stand up slide before I die....I can speed check ok. Look at your bushings etc as your trucks seem very tippy and wobbly ....ankle and knee strength is really important as is control of weight distribution. Now to go scrape up my gloves! Best to you Sir in 2025!
That’s awesome and congrats on getting back to it. Really cool to skate with your boys-and an inspiration in so many ways. Yeah, I was off balance - oddly in my shoe 😆- my last kick, foot slid in the shoe and ate it. You’ll get the stand up slide much faster than you think. 🤘 Best to you as well in 2025! Scrape the gloves, but don’t scrape skin.
Love the vids, but I had a thought that, even with the pads you should wear leathers. On a bike you would, why not on a board? If you don’t want to wear the downhill suit, buy a 2nd hand pair of pants and jacket <- cheaper than a trip to the hospital for stitches in your ass or shoulders
Thank you and can look into those. I wear double layer Kevlar sleeves and wear buttocks pad (under jeans) that covers front & back to mid thigh. As well now-due to recent wipeout last week & road rash-wear back/chest motor bike protector (that I had not worn in awhile since doing toe sides); a reminder for me to keep wearing gear.
Cool; noted hip pads, and the back protector - good idea, I had one of those when I used to ride. They are good cos, like the hip pads, you can wear them under normal clothes. Keep the vids coming!
Thank you. Always trying to improve & learn. Going to be uploading later tonight recent sesh today in tuck with Venom cannibals and magnums. So fun.
You putting yourself and others in danger. You can't even stop/ slowdown safely yet. Not trying to be negative, but I do watch your videos. In an unexpected situation, you are not confident or capable of coming to a stop safely at that speed
Thanks for commenting and watching. I do choose low traffic times to minimize traveling public risk and this was late morning while everyone was mostly at work-eventhough it may appear otherwise. As for myself, I’m in a protected 12 foot (no traffic allowed) zone, all gear, and did attempt to do a few Coleman slides, but not at that speed. Getting use to the newer sticky pavement and fairly newer cannibals was too hard for me so went to another residential street, switched wheels and continued practicing. Techniques aside, I have done push up slides at that speed and have built up enough reaction time to do something, but maybe not what some may do. Confidence can only occur in environments that are as real as the situation allows-I’m not out there to create hazards to people/drivers, besmirch the downhill community or get hurt so I can’t provide for my family. I’m enjoying the learning experiences my off days from indoor/outdoor climbing, and so far - it’s been wonderful.
nice to see you got some scythe gear =) got the same torque block in Pink haha. And their TREX V2 Footstop is my favorite too. NIce smooth run =)
Thanks. Looks really rad, but thankfully my buddy is helping me out to install it because I don’t have a clue. Will be installing probably later in the month.
They shouldn't hwng off tge edge of the board!
@@Lightsinthenightsky333 thanks and modified it before first use.
These look great! I feel like the extra resistance (braking) from the Cannies can help make you grip up easier, especially for your Colemans, but you just gotta learn to use it to your advantage.
@@nickamarit Thank you and I definitely agree. Just barely getting started in understanding wheel capabilities in addition to all the nuances of skill learning to come & refine them all.
hey man. your looking really good but do more of a setup carve to really kick out those back wheels. so say your working on toeside. i see you skate regular (left foot forwards) carve out to the right side of the run, then carve back to the left side and do your toeside. let me know how it goes!
@@M0s1nNagant thank you and makes sense. Haven’t figured out a natural way to set up carve, but will try it & share how it goes. 🤘
You have improved so much from the first video. This is a beautiful slide!
Thank you. Simplicity of just practice & repetition. Starting to make sense now.
Kick back foot out instead of swinging your body around. Get lower on back leg.
Thanks. Will work on that next session. Unseen in the video, but as I was coming down the hill, I faced my back foot more forward and knee slightly inward-felt awkward at first, but getting use to it. Thanks for suggestion.
Finally, Toeside! Congratulations! Once you get used to it, practice not letting your front heel come off the board. This will improve your form and weight balance on the board. Happy New Year!
Thank you. Appreciate the refinement technique on front heel and will practice that next session. Anything to improve weight balance is so helpful. Happy New Year!
Those are probably my favorite wheels. I skate mine flipped for better rail match. 🔥🎉
Cool. I will try them flipped, too-never tried.
@cantskate5535 i dont have any trucks narrower than 160mm, and i ride a landyachtz evo36 and a pantheon sacrifice. So i flip them for a narrower footprint. Works really well for 9.5-9in boards. Always feels better that way for me. Good job with your progression man 💪
@ thanks and good to know. As I’ve gotten more experience on the Prism Owen Fox, I do have a few other boards that I want to try that are narrower. I have trucks that go as narrow 130 mm - both Seismic and Bear, but don’t have balance skill enough to really control them; it’s like a tight rope and I’m barely getting starting on a “plank”. 😆
@cantskate5535 idk if you've tried this yet, but when I've rode smaller trucks in the past, i noticed it helps to run bushings a little softer than i used in wider trucks. At least in the front. It helped me keep all 4 wheels on the ground during slides and tight turns, while the board was tippy before i tried that. Also helps to sort of point your feet forward more. But idk if small setups are for everyone anyway lol
If you can slide Mags, then you can probably slide anything now. edit: Or are these Cannibals? Not Mags?
They're 74a cannibals, so pretty close
Cannibals. But do feel like if I warm up enough-maybe. Will get some Mags now to confirm. Thanks.
You will learn alot skating in rain or damp settings!! It will quickly show you poor weight placement!! Keep at it!!
@@RideFlyLongboards thank you. Yes, learning huge amounts of improper weight & balance.
Maybe try less of an angle than you set them, especially for the Owen Fox board as well as the Rocket. So that the torque block's toeside corner can reach nearer to the toeside edge of the deck - kinda like the Comet deck almost does. (I'd maybe even adjust the Comet deck's torque block to be at slightly less of an angle too - just a little bit.) edit: You should definitely try them all out like you have set them in this vid first, just to see how you like or dislike them. But I'm guessing the angles are a bit too diagonal on most of them, and that you might not be supported in your rear foot for toesides and tucks. Additionally, I'd guess you may also want to move them all backwards a bit as well.
@@nickamarit thanks and yes, will be experimenting to see what feels best. Before I did this, I adjusted Owen Fox more forward and didn’t feel too bad.
I Definitely agree with the first dudes comment!! And also they don't look very pleasing to the eye.
I did actually change it before I rode it. And it’s been working great. Thanks.
@ thanks. I did adjust it before I used it. Not familiar with looks of torque blocks, so maybe my new Scythe will be better-just got that in.
@@cantskate5535 Scythe one looks great.

@@florianleonhardt620 oh yeah! 🤘👊
Feel better
All good, thanks. Felt good to break a quick sweat and keep moving.
Sharp-lipped offset wheels are usually grippier overall, so the kick out and hook up is usually more abrupt because the sharp lips want to continue gripping for as long as possible until they eventually let go. When I use offset wheels, I usually flip them so the harder inner lips are now on the outside. This makes them have easier kick out and smoother hook up while still providing good grip when carving. edit: Some brands (Powell Peralta Kevin Reimer wheels and Byron wheels) design their wheels so that they are inset, which is essentially the same as a flipped offset wheel. And those inset wheels usually slide really well.
Thanks, Nick. Experimenting with various wheels and have those type of wheels. Will be trying those soon. I was stoked to slide reasonably well on the Mach 1s, which was a change from only using them for straight speed.
@@cantskate5535 You can try the Fatty Hawgs (or any other offset wheel) flipped. It's gonna be a lot more crisp for sliding.
@ thank you and I’ll try that. 🤘
Work on the editing brutha.
@@bobbyventure720 what do you recommend-what would you like to see?
Face forward more on your board instead of sideways. Get your back leg bent more and back foot pointed more forward just before you initiate slide. This will point your body more down the hill which will result in less high sides
@@Lightsinthenightsky333 thank you. Makes sense. Still getting use to body awareness in this position, but enjoying it a lot more for a good change up.
ouch...that looks familiar. I have a thin but solid back protector, pls get one too. Pretty bad bruises Jon. Take care, your progress is really really good, you don´t have to rush =) i wish i could skate right now... -10 °c outside =) I wish you and your family a happy new years eve !
@@florianleonhardt620 Thank you and it’s been interesting that I had not worn my back protector since I started doing toe sides? 🤔Oddly my first mistake of pressing away and leaning back on this final attempt to finish session. So, yes, I will start wearing it now-thanks. Wow-that’s 🥶. Happy new year as well. 🤘
Super congrats dude!!!
Thank you. Fun learning a little each session.
Bro you have really shown a noticeable improvement!!! I haven't seen your vids in a bit, and now....boom toesides. Skate on ! I bet as you narrow your trucks over time, you start staying hips over the board more....and then your speed confidence will be hyper focused. I know you climb/ed....explore your toeside and the concept of barn door in climbing....your hip to shoulders... Respect
@@JohnnyD5dub0 thank you and just putting in the work. Plenty more time to put in, but liking the grind. Always open to pointers-thank you.
Rear foot slipped off the torque block?
Yes. I was indecisive of whether to continue toe slides or try first Coleman. That split decision caused me to deweight my front foot, balance was off, board went straight and back foot slipped off. At this point, I think I was a little tired, too as I had done well over 200+ “sprints” on all 5 boards.
@cantskate5535 Woah, that's a lot of reps. No wonder you're tired!
Love the achievement chuckles!

Thank you. Now trying to keep it consistent. 🤘
Nice
Thank you. Enjoying the slippery conditions that require minimum effort. A great learning tool.
Seems like your sick toeside pendies are making your heelside pendies better too. 💯
Definitely looks cleaner than the first bail lol I think there are a couple things going on here. It looks like your front foot is almost perpendicular on the deck, and your back foot is similar with your knee coming out way too far, and it's more likely that youre going to fall off backwards if you shift weight towards your heelside than if your feet/body were pointed more forward. My front is usally 30-45* and my back is almost completely forward and my knees are close to touching during toeside pendys. It also looked like that right didnt really require that hard of a turn and the board got under you faster than you expected which cause the sudden shift to your heel, so you might actually have better luck if you take a tighter line if youre trying to grip the corner, or slide much earlier before the turn rather than in the middle of it. Love watching your progress btw
Yes-1st was a mess in more ways one-haha. Thank you for the great pointers on foot position, knees and line-barely 3rd session on toe sides. Makes sense on all of it. Still trying to figure it all out out, but your pointers are great-🤙
1st bail looks painfull. I hope your fine. It seems u got afraid when it start drifting so u raised up on your heels. 2nd bail looks like the wheels refused to break in slide. Probably because you were still too heavy on back foot. Keep sending ! I love to see your progress and type my advices. I relate so much. I feel more scared with toe sides too.
Yes, 1st bail was painful, more mentally, but all good. 2nd bail was combo of mental freezing and I backed off-shifted too much weight in the back-hence board kicked out. Thank you. Learning new skills is fun. 😆🤘
Love to work being out in, and the progress. You are crushing it.
@@AdventuresInSkateboarding thank you. When it’s fun-it’s not work. 🤘
