a24 sucks shit
Dude super underrated and awesome high quality channel
Thanks, I really appreciate that!
Ewoks DID not beat anyone. They provided the needed distraction. Get it right.
true. got me
This video is excellent. Two questions: Do you think that someone who is brand new should read "Save the Cat" first so that they have a frame of reference to compare everything else to? Note that if someone is new to being an automotive enthusiast and is thinking about getting a performance car, many veteran automotive enthusiasts will recommend that they try the Miata - even though none of those veterans consider the Miata to be their favorite - because it's relatively easy for beginners to handle, does everything reasonably well, and doesn't have any glaring weaknesses. Is that the case with "Save the Cat," or should beginners go straight to Syd Field? Also, are you familiar with "The Nutshell Technique" by Jill Chamberlain and do you have any thoughts about it?
Thanks! I think it depends on what type of movie you want to write. If you want to write a Disney movie, or big franchise like Star Wars or comic book, then Save the Cat will help. However, if you are trying to write for A24 or Neon, or you want to write a more adult, serious movie--like Goodfellas, Ordinary People or Inglorious Basterds-- then Save the Cat would do more harm than good. I would recommend Into the Woods as a good starting place if you want to write that kind of movie. Btw, I don't prefer this type of movie, I like big blockbusters as much as A24 films. But i do think the different approaches fit different types of movies. Save The Cat is good for big, 4 quadrant movies that need to appeal to everyone. I have not read the Nutshell technique yet. I should. Thanks for the reminder
I was ogling Gary Oldman in this movie. Brad who?
Okay, I admit I am dead wrong on this one.
This is brilliant and so useful. Thank you
Thanks!
the guy doesnt even needs a full movie, he made the entire world cry with a 2 minute TEASER trailer that has only 6 spoken words in it
Awesome content, bring more of this
Thanks!
Believer is comically awful cringe embarrassing and just pure lazy 😂
looks fantastic!
Thanks!
Still waiting for Theme Part 3! I need to know what the five layers of meaning are... Or maybe you mention it in the book?
Oh yes. I will make that video next week. Thanks for the reminder!
Can a socially reclusive writer who lives under a rock write a good comparing scars scene?
Sure, Most writers are reclusive--at least a little.
@ what if I were to add “since birth”?
Crazy to think the first recording of a fart wasnt until the 70s 😅 you'd think they'd have them since the dawn of time lol
Too true!!! But what have people done about it? That question goes either way! I wish people would listen to this and understand that the loneliness epidemic is a pressing issue, but they don’t care… they’d rather care about themselves and let people sink into the dark. Let them see just how much they’ve fucked up when they should’ve listened is what I say… let people become villains and see just how much it’s people’s fault and their negligence has cost others.
Eden Lake really shocked me in a good way. it is really rare for me, that a movie can achieve that.
3:46 In the book actually, Chris has flaws, or at least perceived by her as flaws. The devil uses them to blame her for Reagan's possession, too. She devotes more time to her job than her family, which caused her husband to leave and Reagan to blame herself and have (as claimed by the demon) mental problems.
I agree i havent liked many live action remakes. Why don't they make a new movie all together then? meaning instead of remaking Snow White and changing it all? I don't get it too many remakes. I read in Los Angeles times people are mad cause she isn't white......I haven't heard that complaint at all and I feel its just a made up attack because people don't like the new crappy movies coming out
this is straight garbage. a24 doesn't make movies. they buy them at festivals and distribute them. god this is so unbelievably dumb
Excellent take. I wouldn’t call believer terrible but it absolutely fails in any comparison to The Exorcist. All the sequels do. I think the biggest issue with believer is that we just never care about the people including the girls. Regan was lovable and we cared about her from her first seconds on screen
What if the screenwriter is the director
Yes, then they can do whatever they want. Camera angles are fine. I'd still avoid overusing parentheticals because actors hate them.
Amaziing, thank you. If you're still doing TV structure breakdown videos, I would love to see Fleabag and the office
Nathaniel Hawthorne a Christian man gets teleported forward in time to 1995 and watches this film. Nathaniel Hawthorne a Christian man takes out a gun and shoots the director.
She just like me fr ! :3 (MY SKIN IS NOT MINE)
The scariest part of any horror movie is paying to go see one. Even more terrifying is Hollywood keeps making the same movies over and over and over again.
A24 can suck me
Tip 11: Have great imagery, seeing something iconic lingers
Was watching your other channel and in that video you mentioned this one. Weird to go from hearing you talk about Snake Eyes shooting someone in the groin to breakdowns like this. Also this is the fourth or fifth video of yours I've watched today. I agree on showing 4-6 then 1-3. From an impact perspective you really need Vader revealing to Luke how they are related. Had to wait between Empire and Jedi as a kid to find out that answer. It was amazing. Really enjoyable video. Thank you.
Ha! Yeah, you are right. This channel is pretty different from the other one!
I did not enjoy Rebel Moon, but I do like that it is not quippy. When the heroes don't feel danger and just joke through everything it deminishes the threat. Heroes aren't heroic if they don't feel the weight of what they're doing. Also I kind of agree with less romance. Most movies don't need a romantic subplot. A lot that have them, the romance is cliche or obvious. In general I do not enjoy Snyder films but at least he has a vision of what he wants.
Great video. I think being the It person is tricky. When Brad Pitt first became famous for Thelma and Louise I got tired of hearing about him. Then I saw 12 Monkeys and A River Runs Through It. I prejudged him and turns out he can act. Sydney Sweeny has made a few movies where she is very charming.
I watched it on an airplane, because free felt like the amount I wanted to pay. It felt like a movie with nothing to say. Did not understand the sides, and it did the zombie film thing where once violence breaks out we realize everyone is awful. Like was the war over immigration because certainly there are characters that kill what they claim are non-Americans. It tries to be brutal to make a point but does not actually have anything to say, orher than I guess the young war journalist is now a better war journalist?
I legit looked up "three act structure mapped onto the batman" expecting to find nothing cuz thats a pretty frikin niche search but here you are. Much obliged.
Thanks! Glad it helped
Awesome video, thank you.
Midsommar is a boring movie. with just a few good moments, more disgusting or weird than actual horror.
I'ma be real: this is a guilty pleasure movie for me because I like a) Nathaniel Hawthorne and b) Puritan horror movies, but the conclusion is that c) we don't really have a lot of either. But for its notoriety as one of the worst adaptations, Scarlet A '95 is still under evaluated nowadays SO I APPRECIATE THIS REVIEW IMMENSELY. 🥹
Thanks! Yeah, this movie sucks,. but it is so bad it cracks me up.
One of the best videos on writing horror! Really great tipps, thanks! Keep up the great work! Sub
Thanks!
There are jump scares in the original. Nothing over the top, but you have the candle flame in the attic and the simple but effective phone call while Karras is listening to the audio of Reagan . However its only those two , unlike films now that are just full to the brim with them, and they are not in teh least effective.
David Gordon Green was fired from Blumhouse for multiple failures. I dont see him returning to work on the Exorcist if they even get made now. Halloween 2018 was very good. Then they went downhill. Halloween Kills had some really great moments, namely the flashbacks were kinda cool. The scenes with the other mental patient in the car then later in the hospital, were dismal. Halloween Ends was a complete disaster. Exorcist Believer really could have been good, but missed certain marks. The acting was pretty good especially the two girls.
So helpful, thank you for sharing your smarts and insight. I'm writing a military docudrama feature and love the idea of doing a POC for a number of reasons. Appreciate this!
I'm pretty sure, I must have a script like that in my closet😅 ( or I wish)!
Believer is such a piece of shit….completely unwatchable 🤮🤮🤮
Less than a minute in and i clicked out. There is no G in X. Eggsorcist. Nails on a chalkboard.
Why are exorcism stories NEVER about MEN being possessed and raping and killing women and kids? Oh, wait, they don't need being possessed to do that, they already do!
this was great, so glad i discovered your channel.
Thanks!
Amazing ❤
Haha the nude scenes are so 90's
I'm in the middle of writing the third act in my slowburn horror story and i clicked into this video horrified i was about to find out i did everything wrong and i'd have to rewrite the story from scratch, turns out my story follows this exact structure! That was a boost of confidence
Awesome. Glad it was helpful!
Just now, I suddenly thought of "Five Nights at Freddy Got Fingered," googled it to see if anybody made this connection before me, and was pleasantly surprised to learn that some content already exists. =]
This is great. I would love to see a breakdown for Young Sheldon.
