Hi Paul, just discovered your channel. Some of the best I've found on Obsidian yet. Question: At 13:50 into the video you worked some magic to get a popup window. How did you get to that window? I was following right along until this window popped up. Lol. EDIT: Haha! I figured it out. Full stop is the period. Didn't know about this Windows key command. I learned something new. Thank you for the great videos!
Hi Urban, thank you for the positive feedback. Happy to hear that you found something new. The Windows + Period (Full stop) is a quick and easy way to get emojis into your vault. If you install the Hover Editor Plugin and hold down CTRL key you can pop out those notes as editable floating notes.
@@PaulDickson7 Thank you Paul, I'll check out the Hover Editor Plugin!
how do u query for a gallery view? intend to showcase all my gifs or images for my design resources, similar to that of gallery view in notion
Hi Ryeones, you could create a Property for them and call them with Dataview. I use Property = "![[MyImage.png|150x150]]"
I just have a home note with a dataview query but its just for project specific tasks. If you have any kind of fzf (see omnisearch plugin) it kind of makes it redundant to use dataview as a query engine (at least for me). It is very powerful tho
The omnisearch plugin looks pretty cool, thank you for sharing :)
I like the topics of study you got there, kind of similar to mine.. Are you a systems engineer?
Nice one Sub. Sysadmin is my day job ;)
@@PaulDickson7 Nice, im a swe student, amateur dev, studying some (linux) sysadmin too! Love it. Would love to get a career doing either (swe or sysadmin)
Nice
Paul Greetings from Venezuela, could you tell me if you have knowledge of what is happening with the Media Extended pluggin, apparently it is giving problems for some time now, I remain attentive to any response.
Hi Pablo, could you advise what issues you're currently experiencing?
Meta-Bind input field is exactly what I need for my database. Thank you!
That's awesome news ManVorOrange, I might do another video about the InputFields in the future as those are quite useful too. Check out my Obsidian Life OS Series for how I use those.
so sir where i can store main notes or long term evergreen notes on that folder stucture is it distilled notes
Hi RTIA2005, I would recommend putting your distilled notes inside your spaces folder unless they're related to a concept, idea or tool which I would put in the cards folder. You could also chose to leave it in your NoteLab and use a Tag Emoji. The best thing about Obsidian is there is no right or wrong way.
I don't have folder note command options on my obsidian and yes I have installed all plugins
Hi aag, did you install github.com/LostPaul/obsidian-folder-notes Obsidian folder notes, there is another similar plugin called Folder Note which is similar but different
Thank you. This what I am looking for.
Thank you so much for sharing this! This looks really cool!
You're welcome Vignesh, there are so many possibilities with Obsidian. Best of luck
Great video, You got a new Sub! I will have to sit down to see how to use these in my case. Looking at your Snippets list, I'd b interested to see more what you are doing with those as some were very specific, i.e. the Headings snippets. Always looking to see what people are doing. Thanks!
Thank you Stone, the heading snippets I don't use as much. Find the "Toggle Heading" Slash Command a lot quicker
Thanks for the video. I set the template folder location in Templater. But In Template Hotkeys, Snippet folder files are not showing (only files under templates folder). Where to specify the code Snippets to use with slash command?
If the snippets folder is outside the templates folder you will need to manually type to snippet location inside Templater Hotkeys. The Command Pallete is the place to add the hotkeys once set in Templater. Slash command needs to be enabled in Obsidian Settings ;)

I really appreciate the effort you put into creating your content and just wanted to share a suggestion, not to point out mistakes. Mind maps, as popularized by Tony Buzan, are designed to be very visual and thought-provoking by focusing on single words or very short phrases. Using longer sentences can sometimes make the map feel cluttered and take away from its core purpose. You might consider using 2-3 word phrases at most to keep the focus sharp and visually engaging. Of course, it’s just a suggestion, and I respect your creative process! In my opinion this is not a mind map but rather a congregation of information.
Thank you hamesrodrigues for your feedback. You make some really valid points there.
Thanks a lot for these explanations. They are very interesting! Best regards from Spain
Thank you Solerpaco. Your welcome. Best regards from Australia
hi, i'm a design student and have been mostly using notion to organise my life for the past three years, and even set a digital garden (for portfolio and public notes) on there. not the most effective but for now its still doing fine for me. i have dabbled on and off into obsidian the past couple of months but nothing too serious, but was intending to recreate my ppv)within obsidian as well, just incase i were to ever switch over further down the line. one major part of notion is of course its databases, and i have saved design resources over the years, where i would have a gallery view of gifs/images/videos etc that i have saved for easy reference. i know that dataview only is able to query markdown files, was wondering is it possible to use dataviewjs to query a gallery or even table view of file types other than markdown in a particular file? tldr: for example right now, all my gifs live in the 05 - Extras/GIF file path, while images are in 05 - Extras/JPEG. what would the code be to create a gallery/table view to easily see my design resources in one page? apologies if this is a simple question, have little coding background and have tried 'consulting' chatgpt to find a work around before asking…
I remember an e-commerce marketer who commented, 'Hope is an overrated emotion.' His point was that if you have to hope for something, you have no clue or insight into how to actually get there. Hope replaces taking action and responsibility. I liked seeing how your mind map and literature notes were put together in Obsidian. That gives me some (not hope) insight into how you make something like that a useful tool in learning.
Thanks for the deep dive on Templater! It made me realize I may need QuickAdd, thanks for showing it Personally I do it this way : I have a shortcut to add a specific template that I call Note template in every file (almost) that I create. I have filename prefix for each of my template, so whenever I want to add a new book for example, I type : "SB George Orwell - 1984". Then I insert my meta note template, which will have a bit of logic depending on the first 2 letters. in this case it will insert the book template in the file, add in the meta data the dates ect just like you have + author: [[George Orwell]] and title: 1984 and move the folder to my SB (sources/books). It's nice for mobile as well as I can do everything in 1 action. Just wanted to share it :)
Thank you for sharing your workflow Dylan. Have been using prefixes on some of my notes also. I like the SB idea, could work well for others too, Source/Video (SV) etc. Much easier than the whole word.
I get whitespaces(to the left and right) when i add cssclasses-cards. I am using minimal theme. I have minimal theme settings plugin and style settings plugin. How should I get rid of whitespaces? Please help
Hi AlonewithAnkit, are you using "cssclasses: cards" not "cssclasses-cards"
@PaulDickson7 Hello sir, thank you so much for the reply. Yes sir. I checked the syntax. It is correct. I am getting cards view. But the images have so much whitespace on the left and right. Your view looks compact. So I am confused. I checked so many settings but just can't understand it. I have installed - minimal theme, minimal theme settings plugin and style settings plugin. Please help me.
Hi Ankit, what size are your Book Covers? I was forcing a 150 Pixel Width on mine
@@PaulDickson7 Hello sir, thank you so much for the reply. Please help me. It is 150. This is my syntax of the dataview query. Also, I don't have any other "CSS snippets" active. so there is no conflict also. I just have minimal theme settings plugin and style settings plugin for the apperance. ```dataview TABLE WITHOUT ID "![|150](" + cover + ")" as Cover, link(file.link, title) as Title, authors as Author FROM #book WHERE !contains(file.path, "Templates") SORT status DESC, file.ctime ASC ````
Try change "![|150](" + cover + ")" as Cover, to just Cover on the DV Query, then inside your Note on the property Cover use Cover: "![[YourCover.png|150x150]]"
For your data collecting buttons you may consider modal forms. It offers a better experience when you have to input more than a single value
I'm interested Danielo, do you have any examples of this?
@@PaulDickson7 If you mean my personal usage examples, I use it for creating new "contacts" in obsidian. It is a quick add script that just triggers the modal, there I can select if it is family or not, provide a contact information, a name, an auto-complete list of companies it may work on, a list of roles etc. On the obsidian forums there are other examples of other people using it for accounting etc
4:03 I don't have icons in my right-click contextual menu, do yours come from the fact that you're using Iconize?
Hi Paw, when you right click a folder in your Vault the Iconize option doesn't show up?
@ Nope. But I've installed AnupPuccin as soon as I launched a first install of Obsidian, so maybe I should check if the Theme is removing the icons. 😆
@@PaulDickson7 Ok, I've sorted this out after a quick Google search. So here's the solution should anyone have the same issue, it was caused by the activation of the Appearance/Native Menu setting, to match how the OS operates. Don't know why I've set this one On, but this caused the issue which was unrelated to Themes or Vaults...
Well done Paw, are you a Mac user by any chance? Are yes the Native Menus setting. By default this should be Off but good to know in case anyone else has similar issue
@ I am on PC. It's Off by default too, I was at the end of a very long binge watch of my Obsidian Watch Later list, and stupidly thought Native meant Normal. And of course I wanted the thing to be normal like in your videos. Pro Tip: Don't do Settings when tired or overwhelmed by new knowledge. Anyway, I now have a great Obsidian, customized and with awesome plugins...
Thanks a lot! Now I know what to do if a problem arises.
You’re welcome flower, hopefully you don’t encounter too many bugs but these methods definitely helped me.
Thank you for sharing the video! It was really helpful! I was curious about how the dropdown works. Is there another video that shows how to implement it?
Hi MrSandmanGil, thank you for watching. If you're referring to the Dataview InlineSelect Filter check out th-cam.com/video/vP6tA40_Bcs/w-d-xo.htmlsi=weCNn-Qsh3Mz0Mog
This is quite impressive. I landed here because I'm getting started with Obsiadian. Both the way this book is laid out and the book itself are great. Is it possible to make such a canvas available to others? I mean to browse it for myself at Obsidian
Hi Sokolsky, welcome to the Obsidian Community. I do have a couple of these on my KoFi Page. Link in the Description. Planning on doing a few more in the future just got a few other projects on the go atm.
It would be nice if this was in the Starter Vault Pro.
Hi Scott, I will look at adding a basic example in the future to the Starter Vault Pro. In the meantime I will reach out to your via KoFi ;)
What do you use for the making of the diagrams? they are really nice
Hi Gerard, I use a combination of a plugin called Excalidraw combined with png vector logos
i just notice but how did you make the link in yaml turn into actual link when in reading mode? coz mine don't even when i type it in like you did in the video
Hi Jake. If you wrap your link in quotes it should show in reading mode. Topic: “[[Obsidian]]” set the property type to list if multiples
@@PaulDickson7 yeah i tried that as well but idk why it not working my obsidian tbh
Instead of adding the Link in Source Mode, see if you can add it in the Live Preview. Inside the Property Field, start typing [[ then the name of the note you want to link to. Choose the note and Obsidian with auto format the YAML for you. Make sure the note you're linking to exists. Do you show your properties in your Note?
@@PaulDickson7 thank you it work in live preview, still don't get why it don't work in source mode but i atleast i find a way to do it now
Source mode can be very picky with spaces :)
Thanku sir, this video is really helpful!
Thank you! I have been avoiding Meta-Bind Buttons because they seemed more complex than the original Button plugin. One thing I could not figure out with Meta-Bind Button was nested buttons, but I think your video may have given me the tip I needed. I have a note template that has a "New Day Log" button that create a new "Log Time" button below it, the current time on the next line, followed by a bullet point on line after. The "Log Time" button just writes out the current time followed by a new bullet when pressed. It looks like I need to create the button templates and then in my Note template use the "New Day Log" button and have it call another template to insert the "Log Time" button and the initial timestamp. The "Log Time" button would then just write out the current time and a bullet point. I *think* this would make use of the "insertIntoNote" action, which did not seem to be covered in Part 3 of the video. Thanks again for this great video!
Aaand now I remember why "insertIntoNote" doesn't work for me: explicit line numbers. My logs might be on line 10, or line 6, depending on how much information is in the note before the Logs start. "insertIntoNote" doesn't (yet?) allow for relative line numbering, such as "1 line from current position"
Hi Dion, I can understand your initial sentiments about Meta Bind as it felt a lot more complicated than the original Button plugin. I find the Meta Bind Embed Feature quite useful compared to the tradional linking inside Obsidian. I did skim over a few of the "could be useful" button actions as I don't find them very useful yet. The buttons actions that are a bit fiddly are "replaceInNote, regexpReplaceInNote, replaceSelf and insertIntoNote" Did you want to share your template on the Q&A at MB Github, might be an easier way to do it compared to InsertIntoNote github.com/mProjectsCode/obsidian-meta-bind-plugin/discussions/categories/q-a Alternately have a look at the QuickAdd Plugin which has a "Capture" option where you could use the "Insert After" and target a Heading instead of a Line Number.
@@PaulDickson7D'oh! QuickAdd! Thank you! It took a bit of fussing around, especially as I have separate configs for desktop and mobile, but I got it! Thank you!
That's great news Dion, best thing about Obsidian is there is a few options to achieve the same result which gives us a lot more flexibility and control.
Finally some use cases of advanced dataview solution. I usually have to edit the dataview setting for getting my note. This is really helpfull
Hello I bought LifeOs vault, should I also buy LifeOS template? to replicate your system
Hi Denny, thank you for your support! No need to buy the LifeOS Template Pack if you have purchased the LifeOS Vault. Inside the Vault you'll find some details on how to customise your Habits. If you need any further assistance please DM me via KoFi :)
awesome material
I want to go from obsidian to notion :/ it’s so complicated
Obsidian can be simple or as complicated as you would like it to be. Notion also has a bit of a learning curve also. Experiment with both and see where your flow is. August Bradley PPV Series is a great start for Notion. Check out my beginners guide if you’re needing some inspiration ;)
So i was able to follow your video and create the menu but when i try to create the page for U-Z and use OR (file.name >= "U" AND file.name <= "Z")) itll show U-Y but not things starting with Z. Is this last line supposed to differ somehow because evey variation I've tried has resulted either in error or Z still not showing. Thanks for your great tutorial that was easy to follow
Hi Ghaleon7, try using WHERE (file.name >= "U" AND file.name <= "Z" OR file.name >="Z")
Thank you for this video Paul. A question unrelated to the main topic: how do you format your tables in this beautiful way? Cheers!
Thank you Silvio. I use a combination of the Minimal Theme + Minimal Theme Settings, Style Settings Plugins and Custom CSS Snippets for Tables. Only use CSS for my LifeOS but the rest of the vault uses the Minimal Theme :)
This looks cool but I don't have the properties you have, how can I have those? Should I delete types.json or how can I make it generate a new one or a correct one? The properties I see are: aliases link links tags cssclasses excalidraw-autoexport excalidraw-border-color excalidraw-css excalidraw-default-mode excalidraw-embeddable-theme excalidraw-export-dark excalidraw-export-embed-scene excalidraw-export-padding excalidraw-export-pngscale excalidraw-export-transparent excalidraw-font excalidraw-font-color excalidraw-link-brackets excalidraw-link-prefix excalidraw-linkbutton-opacity excalidraw-mask excalidraw-onload-script excalidraw-open-md excalidraw-plugin excalidraw-url-prefix
Ok after few hours of banging my head I think I solved: - Removed all properties from all notes (not many as the vault is new) - Unassigned all that I'm allowed to, remains aliases, cssclasses and tags - Now the types.json is finally very empty and clean - I am able to add new properties from the code view
Hi Riccard, anything with prefix excalidraw is related to the Excalidraw plugin. YAML Properties are added to Markdown Notes (.md files) Happy you were able to work it out but still a little confused why you're making changes to .json file Doc - help.obsidian.md/Editing+and+formatting/Properties
Interesting 4:50 would you be so kind to develop this idea of integrating Quik Add with TH-cam note taking.
Hi Pablo, on my KoFi Page at ko-fi.com/s/690bfcd447 I have added this feature to Obsidian TH-cam Notes Vault PRO. Will update some screenshots so you can see it. In the future I can dedicate a video to setting QuickAdd commands up
@@PaulDickson7 Thanks Paul I'll check the video
@@PaulDickson7 Ready Paul thank you Enjoy your coffee...
Thank you Pablo, ☕🙂
Thank you!
very thorough and useful. thanks for sharing!
Thank you Ronny
Hi Paul - This is the only guide on debugging Obsidian I have ever come across in all the years I have watched Obsidian TH-cam videos (and I must have watched 95%+ of them ). Like all of your videos (I am currently reviewing them again) they are packed with practical help, the likes of which no other TH-cam channel offers. These must take you a lot of time, in what I am guessing is a busy life, and I wanted you to know how much I appreciate them. I do hope hope the TH-cam algorithm presents your videos to more and more folks searching for Obsidian, because you deserve way more views than some of your videos have received. Please do keep them coming. They really are a game changer for those of us who need support. Thanks again!
Hi Colin, thank you so much for leaving positive feedback. It couldn't have come at a better time. I just had a comment on another video say my intro "Hi, I'm Paul" sounds AI generated which made me laugh but also second guess if I'm over using it on my videos and it's becoming annoying. It's always nice to get some positive feedback. I try to make my goal less focus on myself and more on Obsidian, which is why I have chosen providing value over your stereotypical talking head video. I work full time as a SysAdmin and spend most of my spare time making Obsidian videos as I love taking notes. Obsidian really has changed my life and I get a lot of joy out of helping others. I have a few more ideas in the pipeline, if there is anything you would like to see more of please let me know. The TH-cam algorithm is strange, hopefully more people can discover the channel. Thank you again for leaving a feedback!
@@PaulDickson7 - You are more than welcome. Its been Obsidian-related content producers like yourself that enhanced the lives of tens of thousands of folks like me over these past 2-3 years, and I for one simply couldn't function without it - quite literally. It has enabled me to surpass matters I won't highlight here, so please be aware your work goes far beyond a 'nice to have'. It really is life-changing for many of us neuro-divergent types. I will gladly make some note (in Obsidian of course) of any requests or suggestions / feedback to offer my support in your endeavours. Speak again :-)
The problem of using an AI generated clone voice from text is that the result is monotonous and lacks personal touch. The content is fine.
Hey Dan, thank you for your feedback. There isn't AI generated voice in this video. That’s me at the start :)
@@PaulDickson7 This exchange was funny.
I had a chuckle as well. Sometimes when our brains are cooked from too much dopamine we can sound like robots ;)
Thanks Paul for this video. Like are your content it’s very good! Congratulations
You’re welcome Borco. Thank you for your positive feedback.
Very interesting this information. Thanks so much for the videos about Obsidian you are sharing with us. The are very useful!! Best regards from Spain
I have spent hours over the past two weeks learning Obsidian and setting up vales files and plugins - today it all disappeared and I have no idea how to get support to recover everything. The files are local on my Mac but inaccessible no matter how many times I restart Obsidian. Do you have any thoughts or suggestions?
Hi Dale, I'm working on a Debugging Obsidian Bugs video at the moment which may be helpful. In the meantime though do you know where your Obsidian Vault files are located? If so copy everything but the .obsidian folder into a new Vault. This will load only the core plugins. Alternately go into .obsidian/plugins and change the name of the plugin folder until you identify which one is causing the issue.
@@PaulDickson7 Thank you so much, Paul! It is kind of you to reply. Still a little lost. Did set up new vault and copied files and moved them over, but no plugins made the move and still none of my folders are visible / accessible from left sidebar. Bummer to me. I've spent a lot of time, had it looking great, and not very techy at all.
If you feel your main Vault .obsidian folder is corrupted. Create a brand new Vault and move your folders/md files (excluding the .obsidian) to the new Vault location (leave the .obsidian folder as this may be corrupted). Only disadvantage is you have to reset all your Obsidian Settings and Reinstall Plugins. Have you got any idea about what may have corrupted Obsidian? If you can pin point the last known time it was working. Before installing a plugin, then you could just remove that plugin from the .obsidian folder. Do you have a Backup Schedule for files on your Mac? For PC I use EaseUS Todo Backup, this automatically backs up my Vault weekly so that I can restore if needed.
@@PaulDickson7 You are unbelievably kind and generous to reply. I am not clever (tech-wise) enough to know anything specific - app just would not load any folders, notes, plugins on left sidebar. For me, the very good news is that I was so new that I was able to start over. I still did the export from Evernote and import into Obsidian. Set up my PARA folders. And I just went into the Community Plugins and recognized the many plugins I had before from watching you and a couple others on YT. My hat is off to you. Many, many thanks!
That's great news Dale. There is a slight learning curve with Obsidian but over time you'll love using the app. There are endless possibilities and you can make it as simple or as complex as you need. Check out my beginners guide for some useful tips and tricks and keep checking back for new content.
what are those `<% await tp.system.suggester(["x","y","z"])%>` things? where can i learn more about them?
I like how you use local graph for tags. I'm inspired, ty!
@@adriansrfr That’s great Adrian. The local graph works well with linked topics, ideas or related information as you can find related notes quicker. Exploring a subject or interest is also visually satisfying.
Thanks for trying to address the note categorization and resurfacing (finding) collected, and filed, information (notes) later. This is a tough problem to solve. You gave a great example of where to store a note (YTV as a source and Topic area of the YTV, that is stored as topic). However, your solution of having two notes for the same YTV with different info in them is not a scalable nor a long term solution, IMHO. It can also be confusing, especially when (not if) you forget which note has the detailed information your trying to resurface (find). The real solution is to have overarching Topics areas and sources and specific areas covered in YAML Properties and specific tags. Then the problem becomes three fold: 1) how do you create a useful and rememberable folder structure; 2) what topics and other properties should one define and consistently reuse and consistently extend to cover more information areas; 3) How to structure you tags hierarchy (similar problems to 2). Note it is difficult to come up with a tag hierarchy that is orthogonal to a file structure hierarchy that is also orthogonal to properties (and value hierarchies for each property that is a list). Mine tend to overlap and be duplicative at some levels of the hierarchy. BTW, I don't think ANYONE has adequately solved this problem. The LYT guys defiantly think they have, but I've used that method extensively and abandoned it because I hate having to navigate a bunch of MOC layers to find a note. Conversely, having large number of notes in a single directory is also problematic because its sorted alphabetically by note title/name and to find a note you either have to read all the titles/names in the directory or remember exactly the first couple of letters/words in the title/name.
@@deserthorsedude Thank you for watching and your feedback. Definitely a tough problem to solve. Showcasing the challenge of having two folders with a similar note can be a regular problem. I try keep one distilled note in the most obvious folder for easier recall but sometimes there are double ups. By using a combination of folders, tags and links it easier to flush out notes. You have made some very good points. I spent a lot of time trying to perfect the perfect system in the start but realised it doesn’t exist. Finding a system that worker for me was more important. Now its my hobby to showcase the good and bad and everything in between.
notion's key note yesterday was pretty good, and offline mode will be in the works, hopefully rolling out by 2025. as for now, hopefully balancing the use of notion and obsidian will be a good choice
Flexibility is key , would be good added feature for Notion users
Very helpfull! Thank you. Can you maybe also show / instruct on 'Spaces'? I am struggeling because they seems to be also properties. Any way, again thanks for this video!
Hi Rogier, are you referring to spaces in YAML or the folder spaces?
