As soon as finish secondary school ( I’m going into second year in St.Munchin’s college in limerick. I am hoping to apply to the Irish air corps to become a pilot because I’ve had people in my family that have served in different militaries around the world like my cousin that flys the E/A-18 growler in the RAAF and I hope to follow in my dads steps because he served in the FCA and my grandfather was a F-4 pilot in Vietnam. I hope I don’t grow anymore because being a 6’2 13 isn’t really good if you want to become a fighter pilot !!!. If the air corps doesn’t work out I was wondering if it would be possible to apply for the united states Air Force academy?

Thanks for the wonderful memory. I had the happy task of updating the Fouga avionics with Don Bernard (R.I.P.) in the Aer Lingus hangars back in the 1970s. I was a young "wet behind the ears" avionic engineer, lots of paperwork but little practical experience. Don and the Fougas sorted that out. Thank you IAC .... and the Fougas.

It’s such a pity that the Irish Air Corps museum has no real standing as a national museum and appears to enjoy no support outside the Air Corps itself. The collection can’t be accommodated in the present hangar and some aircraft are leaving on loan. There needs to be an officially supported plan to locate the museum in a dedicated facility and to ensure that, as with every other European air arm, there is a proper museum, open to the public, recording and preserving the organisation’s history.

But the Air Corps doesn't do rescue service any more. They passed that role over to the Irish Coast Guard about 10 years ago. In April 2024 there was an incident with a little girl being blown off Dun Laoighre pier. Coast Guard rescue 116 flew up from Waterford while the Air Corps stayed safe on the ground in Baldonnell. What the f !

Excellent video. Nostalgic. However once the Irish Air Corps had vampire jets, then armed Fouga Magister jets, now no fighter or defensive jets that can carry ordinance. Just 50 yo anaemic insect propellor aeroplanes suitable for dropping turf on Russian naval incursions or crime gangs moving drugs by air, we have to phone the RAF if we need terrorists or hijacked aircraft intercepted. We have no air 'force', no means of defending against the modern treat of terrorism or international organised crime. It's an embarrassing national disgrace and a joke. Ireland could afford a squadron of 6 Saab Gripen's. 5th wealthiest nation on earth and we can only send cessna's up to defend our sovereign airspace. Has 9/11 thought us nothing? Even during WW2 as a neutral country we had a squadron of top flight Spitfires akin to today's F16s. Neutral countries such as Switzerland and Sweden have proper air forces with defensive jets. We don't even have proper primary and secondary radar cover, RAF do that.
