Universal Audio Ruby, Dream '65 & Lion '68 - Are they worth the $$$
มุมมอง 117หลายเดือนก่อน
I've already prepared myself for the hate I'm going to get for this...I hope. These are three very good sounding, VERY over priced plugins from @UniversalAudio that for most people - although not all - simply aren't worth the price of admission. Zoom MS-50G Preamps with IRs & GIVEAWAY Update!
Regarding the three recording methods, I found them all comparable without any notable differences. Thanks for the demo!
Yeah the very very slight differences I noticed could totally just be in my head. Ultimately I think it just comes down to what works best for your setup.
Solid vid 👍 I’ve got the Lion and Dream pedals. They’re great! No plug ins for me. Esp at that price
Cool video. I picked one of these up a few months ago. I plugged one in on a whim and ended up leaving the store with it. Great sounding and versatile little device!
I’m definitely glad I grabbed one. I have been very pleasantly surprised!
your guitar playing sucks and so do your opinions! good video
What about my hair? How’s my hair?
Maybe it's just you. The Tonex One is an amazing tool. Especially for your average guitarist, it allows us to have literally thousands of amps for a few 100 bucks. Sonething we'd never have access to in the past. Like all things in life, there's a learning curve. Once learned it is pretty easy, everything has nuance. I've sold my other amps and now play through Studio Monitors with a Sub. If I gig, I'll get a Fender FR10.
You know… with a history as a former Kemper user, I kind of had a gut feeling what to expect and what not to when I got myself a Tonex One recently. It was the same with the Kemper. Some profiles work with your guitar or your chain, some need more tweaking than others, and a lot of them won’t work, no matter what you do. I feel that’s still the very nature of digital guitar products like this. There are so many variables at play, be it the chain used, the experience the user has etc… I got this one for easy headphone jams on the couch when my kid is asleep, and it more than serves the purpose. I have found a few captures and presets that I like and that work with my guitars. It lets the character of individual guitars shine very distinctly and it takes my pedals well. Hell, it even lets me capture my pedals, even pedal chains. And I’m excited for the coming update and the added effects. I can see myself using it as a dead easy fly rig, even for acoustic guitar. Recording demos, although I have other more expensive digital and analog gear. It’s nice. Especially for the price. I hope IK keeps improving and evolving it.
I don't like it either, pretty much agreed with anything you said, and i like my M-Vave Blackbox way better. Most starting higher gain Amps sound really harsh on the trebles and mids, basses sound very good though, but the trebles have a coarse rattle in them, they only go away if you pair it with a overdrive or distortion in the profile. and yeah, like you also said, it just does not pair with my other fx pedals, the sound gets screwed. i also hate the software, it keeps messing with my volumes, and the clean amps are just not clean, they keep being dirty. And again like you said, the free tonex software is extremely limited to maybe max 40 captures, and only 10 sound good. And the real dealbreaker for me was when i found out you can only have a Amp+OD+Cab in it, and that's it. Kinda wished i'd saw your vid before i bought it, but i can still send it back, so i will tomorrow.
I know there have been some updates that a lot of people like but it still just isn’t my thing.
Sounds really good, is the delay stacked before the DC 30?
Yeah. I usually just run my effects in front of my amp or sim.
Great channel, you put a very intelligent and in depth spin on your subject matter. Too many folks on TH-cam sound more like salespeople than technical reviewers regardless of whether they are being paid for the review or not.
Thanks! I really appreciate that. I just wanted to be honest and share my experience even if others don’t quite agree.
In terms of using it as an interface, the pedal now comes with Genome, so you wouldn't need to buy additional software to create recording presets using the amps😊😊 I am hoping to get one soon & I too don't like the fact it doesn't run in stereo, or create parallel paths.
I found this pedal to be incredibly underwhelming and just bad sounding in general. I’m a reverb junkie and own over a dozen. I just don’t like the voicing and for what it is trying to be or achieve it just isn’t good imo
Cool story, bro. Lol
Thanks for adressing this stuff, man! I am always having a hard time paying for plugins... it's crazy how good the stock plugins in many DAWs are these days. Coming from the times where you went to a store and bought software on a CD-Rom (mostly video games haha), I am already having a hard time just paying digitally and then downloading something without having any physical reminder of owning said product. Blowing 300$ into the digital ether to "own" something that is supposed to replace or do the job of something tangible and physical like a big tube amp just feels wrong to me, no matter how good the plugin is. And that doesn't mean plugins don't have merit or can't sound as good or anything. It's just my gut feeling with paying a lot of money for something that does not physically exist when the counterpart is as physical as can be. Great video! :)
I agree with most of the comments here in that I like to ToneX One for what it is and the price. I dunno..maybe if this is a pain in the arse stay away from things like the Helix etc. but it's pretty simple here. I had the full pedal for a while on my main board before I got ToneX One to take with a Boss Katana 100 for small gigs/practice/jams, etc. rather that ripping the larger ToneX box off my board every time I do those things and the sound and convenience alone is worth the small amount of coin I paid for it. It also works great as a stomp for say a TS808 or Blues/Overdrive (and having that flexibility of choice) into another amp model like an AC30 or a Twin/Super reverb, Tweed, Mesa etc. on the big pedal through a 2x2x12 stereo setup with a 1x1x12 center channel with independent effects when I take out the whole enchilada...to an...enchilada show...or something. Anyway...pretty killer here. Appreciate the video though. Cheers, bud.
Thanks for the honest feedback I also just bought one. I felt similarly to you, but I guess it was meant for use in a situation where once you’re set, you don’t need to tweak anything anymore.
What a strange noise when turning on/off the 1312. Sounds like the switch is somehow connected to the chassis?
Made it to end of intro and totally agree! The software and setup is terrible.
Love the Have Heart pin! Straight edge for life!
Have Heart are one of my favorite bands ever!
I don't get it ... does it have midi or not ... what is this setup then th-cam.com/users/shortsBNFkVgGFV1w?si=vG-Jy3V_sFbwB1ll
Any device with presets and/or multiple functions per knob should have endless encoders as mandatory requirement by law.
I'm a real amp guy, my Mesa Mark V:25 is all I need these days. However, after seeing and trying many of these modelors and capturing units, plugins etc, I think this one is the best bang for your buck, doesn’t sound bad minimal latency that a weaker PC could introduce with plugins (sounds abit digital, like all modeling units) but the average listener or player isn't gonna care about that and at least you don't need to pay almost 3 grand for a Quad Cortex, which sounds really underwhelming for the cost, the Nano Cortex also being stupidly priced for what it is, with promised features that never see the light of day. This at least is reasonably priced, has good features, the IK people are clearly trying to improve the software and hardware with free patches like the new FX patch that lets you have other desired effects in the chain. I just feel like if I needed something compact to model or capture, this works, and they are putting packs from brands like Mesa in which honestly sound good from what Ola Englund showcased. I really like this thing for what it is, does it scratch that real amp itch I have, no, obviously not, its like trying to compare a Ferrari to a Nissan, but, the Nissan will still get yea from point A to B, maybe not with the same overwhelming power and feel, but still gonna be a smooth enough ride for most individuals.
I love that Ferrari/Nissan analogy! For a lot of people it’s all about practicality and a Ferrari just isn’t a practical vehicle for most drivers…no matter how amazing it might be. I think a lot of people think I HATED this but I didn’t. I just wanted to point out some things other people hadn’t, things I didn’t care for.
Zoom state, it has multi layer ir Just not adjustable
I wad ready to sell mine but then I tried it with a 3rd party IR and WOW!!! Yes the software sucks, but turn off the cab sim and use an IR and its AWESOME!
What’s your go-to third party IRs? I’ve always really liked Own Hammer but there’s so much good stuff out there
@@BMinusDemos celestion!
Thank you!
I'll never capture ANYTHING. I have the big pedal version ..... for me it's a GAME CHANGER! Who needs to capture their amps? Only vintage amp owners/ collectors .... right? BUT 80% of their customers are like ME, right? My software experience has been smooth .... so far. Forget the phone app .... learn to use the panel controls. Phone controls are not reliable, don't depend on them. My big version of the pedal is midi controllable, too. Thanks B Minus!
Despite not really vibing with the One I still really want to give the big guy a try. I think people think I hated the One, but I didn’t. It just wasn’t for me.
@@BMinusDemos the big guy is legit😋
Sounds very unique. Cool demo bro.
This was quite helpful since in a fellow vox user trying to replicate my Blues Driver to AC30 sound digitally. It took me many years to find the overdrive sound I wanted with my hardware, now the search begins to replicate it in reaper so I'll give this a try. I've messed with NAM but couldnt get it to sound the way I wanted. Im also pretty new to this so im sure thats not helping
I also haven’t found a NAM sound that I really enjoy. I keep trying but it just isn’t quite there for me. Especially a lot of the Vox/Fender captures I’ve tried.
I bought it to access the capture personally, it is a chore finding the right tone but going through it provides some insight on what to avoid and which to look into further. I would like the acquire the full blown rigs but space is a factor for me unfortunately. For plugins, I go with Neural DSP stuff, eventually I would like to get a modular also, maybe the Fender Tone Master.
I was kind of 50/50 on the Tone Master and then I saw Drain use it live and I was like ok, I’m very interested in this. Space is an issue for me too. And neighbors. I can’t crank an amp even if I had space for it.
Ehh, I am going to need a bit more than Black Foot heritage and "amp like" to set it apart from the thousands we already have.
Well that’s too bad because you’re not getting anymore.
@11:20. Nothing inspiring? The profiles are 100% representation of a particular rig (DI amp, amp+cab, booster+amp+cab, etc etc) But, if you never played a real rig, then you don't know how it supposed to sound in the first place. What amazes me is this: people not understanding the reason behind having a pedal like this - for $180 you'll have 2 of your own amps captured (or a capture you like that was made by someone else) , and then play on stage with it. This isn't an amp modeler, it's a pedal to load your profiled amps, not to spend hours playing with knobs like you're doing it with a modeler.
I’m relatively new to modelers. Just the last couple of years. I’ve owned a bunch of stuff over the years. Tube and solid state. Head/cab and combos. And this thing is way more than just a way to play your profiles on stage. Another huge component is using it as an interface. It’s not a one dimensional piece of gear. And it just doesn’t hit on all fronts. Nothing does. But also, I don’t know if you noticed but I didn’t say this sucks. I said I didn’t really like it and that it’s not for me. But I’m not on here to gargle these brands. I highlighted some things that a lot of the paid reviews weren’t addressing. If it works for you that’s awesome. It just wasn’t for me.
Subscriber 200 here. You deserve more.
Thank you!
Good review! I have had one for about 3 months now and the only thing I don't like is the lack of an effects loop. I have to put all my time based effects post DI/Line out which kind of defeats the purpose of having a DI. I think I need a separate DI at the end of the signal chain.
I totally get that. I like running everything before the amp so an effects loop isn’t something I really think about. But I know a lot of people that use it so I can see how it’d be a nice feature.
1 criticism shut down : The goal of the opus is to make your own presets if you aren't satisfied with the existing. Plus you can buy some cabs that are not included in the 5 you have when you buy the machine. It's like a pocket fractal that takes the pedals very well and has a DI out for your live perfs to send the signal into a mixer. what else do we want ? For 250 dollars you can have basically all the amps in the market in a numerical modern 21st century audio machine ! WOW to me it's the best thing ever, I sold all my amps and I'm using just this tool as my go to amp, in my home studio as well as on stage. Other argument about the names seems absurd to me, everyone knows that the amps names are commercial properties of the brands, they are registered and trademarks ! That's why two notes haven't the rights to use the name Marshall nor Fender etc... I think they are doing a good job with that actually to helping us recognize what it is without using the property names
You didn’t really shut anything down, but I guess if it makes you feel better you told me. I really liked this though. If I played live I think I would’ve kept it a lot longer than I did. Definitely liked it better than the ToneX One.
Great video… I’ve seen these pop up online, but appreciate hearing a range of Fizz Imp pedals

Have you tried Gigfast Lite. Nice UI on iOS for NAM models
Help me please!? How do I make my Tonocracy smaller, it's full screen and the buttons don't show. Thanks for whatever help giving! Kevin
I just saw this. Did you get it worked out?
@@BMinusDemos Not yet.... :(
I see what you're saying, but I think the problem is you're trying to use the tonex in order to acquire tones from amps you don't own. And then on top of it, you're not getting the sound that you want from the captures. Many, on the other hand already have tube amps and they use the toneex in order to capture their rig. This is how I use it. Most people I know that gig with it use it the same way.
To me this is what’s so interesting about gear. Its use case varies so much. I know about a dozen people using either this or the big guy regularly. None of them own the amps they’re using in ToneX. In fact, in a couple of cases the guys don’t own a single amp. Even among demoers on here it’s probably a 50/50 split. Ultimately, the sounds aren’t nearly as bad as the UI. Both the physical UI of the One and the app’s UI are definitely the worst I’ve ever used. I can’t think of one that’s worse. Now, I’m sure I could’ve gotten used to it but I never found a sound I liked enough that it was worth the effort.
Great Job as always! Had my eye on one of these before, maybe I need to revisit that
Thank you sir! These are rad. I highly recommend it if you get a chance. Definitely right up your alley 👍
I love your favorite setting. That's probably mine too
Russian muff used to be my favorite but the triangle has really taken over for me.
Thank you
Eq and boost in the fx loop gives me such a great control over my frequency pallette without sacrificing any dynamics. I run this into a 4x12 and this thing isn't just loud but has that 'umph' I wasn't expecting from an orange designed amplifier. It won't let you down
I found a fantastic sound in 5 minutes. I had no reason to tweak it. It sounds amazing. Captures are amazing but completely limited. The reason for the Tonex One is for someone like me. I found the tone I want and now it’s done. This thing is a steal for under $200. It’s the sound quality without the option anxiety.
Nice! This right here is exactly why I try to always say that I don’t like something or that it doesn’t work for me, as opposed to screaming at everyone about how it sucks. Lol. This works great for some people. The guy I traded mine to really digs it. I’m psyched any time someone can find what works for them.
Your guitar sucks lol
i liked the idea of the packrat, but didn't feel like dropping that much for a pedal. then i heard about the 1312 and what Black Mass does with half the proceeds of the pedal, and i did feel like dropping that much for a pedal. i have to have a RAT on my board, and i like having the 1312 on there, it sounds rad. i think i usually leave it on one of the asymmetrical clipping settings (4th setting clockwise. i remember hearing some versions had the mode switch upside down on accident, so some of the online demos differ depending on the version.) anyways, long live the RAT pedal!
I had pretty much the same reaction to it. When the heard the 1312 for the first time I was like “this is cool”. When I learned about where the money goes I was like “placing order now” lol.
So True. I ordered, it came and returned back in day. Cons 1. Software is extremely bad. 2. Hiss or static issue in pedal with earphones, additional pedals and computer is irritating. 3. Not able to find proper sound and not having realtime update of sound between Hardware and Software is bad. Pros 1. Small form factor Moreover, every single video out there speaks about how great the pedal is, but most of the TH-camrs are using their own IRs or provided by IK, which ultimately sounds good in the mix. They don’t speak about the cons this pedal has. It is frustrating for musicians who are on budget and buy the product, later on returning it back.! The day IK makes the software better, I might go back and buy it.
I think for a few dollars more the Boss IR2 might be a better option. I’m looking to get my hands on one right now and give it a shot.
@@BMinusDemos I´ve had Tonex one and IR2 at the same time. Preferred Tonex one. Much better reverbs and more flexible than IR2. You´re stuck with 11 fixed amps on IR2 and personally I only liked two of them. Thats why I stayed with Tonex one. Software is annoying but once you´ve found a couple of captures you like: place them on tonex one and enjoy.
@MrBossei While I didn’t HATE the IR2 I did dislike it enough that I didn’t even keep it long enough to do a video on it like I did the ToneX One. I was super disappointed because I really liked the Katana and I kept hearing it was some of the same sounds. I’ve considered revisiting the ToneX software when it gets the effects update.
I just plugged mine in this week. My birthday was on July 22. My son got it for me. Plugged it in yesterday and could not get input settings with the software. I totally agree with you… I’m a super tech heavy guy working in technology and this just made me insane With the software. Also, there’s so many people here on TH-cam that are just putting up videos that are completely useless…There are no detail videos on instruction how do you even factory reset this thing? THANK YOU 🙏
As a tech guy you know, a poor UI can hurt an otherwise killer product. I never expect perfection from a piece of gear. And I can work with a few quirks from an app/software. But this was just too much to be worth it for me. I never want to be negative, but I always want to be honest about what I’m using. Glad you liked it 👍
THANK YOU! also we have to mention that you just random ordered the pedal and waited for it like anybody else :) Thank you for your demo your work and time
Thanks for making such an awesome pedal!
i dig your videos, but compared to everything else ive been watching tonight the volume when you were talking on this one is way quiet. not sure if thats by design but i had to turn you way way up
Thanks for letting me know. I’ll check it out. I didn’t notice any issues when watching it back after posting but I’ll give it another listen and check my levels 👍
Lol this thing is a marvel of technology, would have to be pretty jaded not to appreciate that
I agree with this. I genuinely appreciate what it represents. And I actually like that not every company approaches digital amp solutions in the same way. That gives people the flexibility to find what works for them, just like with physical gear. I do think that just like with any other piece of technology, poor UI can be the biggest hurdle even for good tech.
I haven’t had the problems you described, but you presented them in a reasonable way. The IK models are fine to me, but I’ve had better luck with Amalgam models - e.g., the Hiwatt is especially good. It’s to be expected that users will need to put some time into finding and tweaking their favorite tones, but in my experience, it hasn’t been any more difficult than working with other digital gear. Thanks for the vid.
I did like the Amalgam Hiwatt. And it liked some of Kyle Bull’s stuff too.
Yeah i agree that the software and workflow is designed terribly. Not to mention the input gain issues with changing it depending on the guitar. I dont agree that "its not great." Its one of those things where its amazing at some things and terrible at others. Once you have explored all your captures and they are all downloaded, just leave it. I love it and i think its brilliant despite the issues, now that i have all the sounds i would ever want on it. I havent had to tinker with it too much once i got my sounds. The sound quality as it relates to other products is just far superior, even products over 1000. The software will get better over time. But averaging the problems it has versus the pros is not an accurate picture of the product.
It works really well for some. I traded it to a buddy and he really digs it. But captures just aren’t my thing. I keep trying but just haven’t been able to get them to fit in my workflow. As I said, that’s not saying they’re bad, they just don’t work for me. But I keep trying. Maybe one day I’ll find one that changes my mind.
@BMinusDemos yeah if you're not picky with authenticity I can see why modelers and plugins would be better.
@rethinktone I’m not super picky with authenticity. Many of these amps I haven’t played in years or maybe have never played. It’s be like me judging the authenticity of food type I’ve never had. I just don’t have the knowledge base to make that call. But what I can judge is whether or not I enjoy playing it. That’s always my primary focus. I never ask “is this perfect”, I ask “do I like this”.
@BMinusDemos yeah I haven't played a real marshal plexi. But I played the hx stomp version of it and I was not a fan of the sound. It felt lifeless. But if you haven't run into that issue makes your life way easier. I have to configure my hx effects with my tonex through midi, which is super annoying.
