Spearfishing Gem Lakes and Whiteswan Lake in Saskatchewan, Canada
We went back out to spearfish the Gem Lakes in Saskatchewan and Freedive in Whiteswan lake. Water temperuature was a nice and comfortable 13C and visibility was around the 15-20ft. It was an amazing weekend and we were able to bring back lots of great tasting trout! My personal best came in at 27.5 inches.

Spearfishing Canada - Little Raspberry Lake & Lovering Lake, Saskatchewan

Went back to Saskatchewan to check out a few more lakes over there. Little Raspberry lake is located in the Meadow Lake Provincial Park and is stocked with Brown Trout and Splakes. It took us quite a while to figure out how to hunt and approach them but eventually we started being successful. Lovering Lake is quite close to Moose Jaw and it's full of Pikes and Walleye. I’m not a fan. Being a fly fisher I practice catch and release. Spear fishing you can’t. I like the footage and appreciate the skill. But unsure of the impact on the fishery.

    • @romanomantel7548
      @romanomantel7548 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Spearfishing is a HUGE sport all around the world. It’s just like hunting. You can’t release a deer that you go hunting for either. You shoot to eat. And the whole “catch and release” argument doesn’t hold up in my opinion, as it’s a known fact that about 30% of fish die of the trauma and stress caused to the fish after they released. And given that these lakes are stocked every year with new fish, I’m sure there is no impact at all on the fishery.

    • @sky_taleproductions7982
      @sky_taleproductions7982 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@romanomantel7548 - I’m not disagreeing with the 30% survival rate of catch and release. Does depend upon handling and skill of the angler. Treble vs single hook, barbed vs un-barbed and more. Still 30% is much better than 100%. I’m not against hunting or spearfishing. Just not 100% convinced on the current regulations in Saskatchewan in general being good for the fishery/natural resource. I did browse over suggested changes in regards to angling and spear fishing but the rationale I don’t remember the details well enough to comment.

      @@skinz1234 thank man. Appreciate it. Make sure you watch a couple of TH-cam vids on how to put an open cell wetsuit on and how to take it off. Very important you use some kind of lube to get in otherwise you’ll tear it the first time you use it. But open cell is definitely the way to go! Good on you! The speargun you see me use, I made myself. It’s a 110cm long with a spear overhang of 40cm. I found that that is super important when it comes to accuracy. You want a spear overhang between 25-40cm. Not shorter. I’m also using a roller gun which has its benefits and challenges. They say it has more power and less of a recoil in comparison to a normal rubber band gun. My buddy bought himself a Rob Allen gun from a dive store in Vancouver and is super happy with it. I like them to be around 90-100cm long as it helps to close the gap between you and the fish. If you go shorter you lose power and accuracy but if you go longer you might find that challenging due to the bad vis in the Canadian lakes…

      Hey Jesse! It was by the power plant side of the dam but right next to the water outflow there is another channel where the water is standing still. If you dive down right at the beginning of that channel there are what I would call “concrete teeth”. Once you see them you’ll know what I mean. Your actually see them in the video. I must say thought that I was back there last may and I couldn’t see any burbot there at all… so I either got super lucky or the month of October (that’s when I made that video) is better as the water is even cooler… apparently the burbots like the really cold water…
