EXPERIMENTAL Floating Woman Oil Painting Process
I decided to try a new series of paintings with the subject in full view floating in space. Like my other paintings, I want the colors to feel like they interact with the subject. This painting took many more hours than usual because I didn't have a clear vision of what I wanted. After figuring out the visual language I wanted to use, the painting started to come together very quickly in the last couple of layers.

So that's going to be the discuss for today, how can you tell if you are ever going to be any good. Like usual, I just ramble on for about 20 minute...

incredible work!
Thanks a lot!
Wow!
Really love it, Josh! Where is the panel from? Also, what medium did you use for your layers? Thanks!
The panel is from ampersand called gessobord. I used alkyd walnut oil from m graham. I also use a 50/50 mix of stand oil and orderless mineral spirits. They both have a very similar feel. Sometimes I suspect the mineral spirits break down the paints a bit too much so lately I've been reevaluating using alkayd walnut oil. Definitely the simplest solution. I'll also keep it really simple and just use linseed oil or walnut oil by itself.
@@joshsorrell oh thank you so much, Josh! I’m always watching your videos when they’re available. Really appreciate your comment and I’m looking forward to the next video :)
💕💯🎨🎨🎨
Great video. Thanks for posting.
Thanks for watching!
Interesting vid Josh, thanks for sharing! I think I am doing a bit of what you suggested but I'm not yet hearing my voice/ my story yet. It's being drowned out by what I think my surroundings think or what I think my surroundings think I should be thinking (sorry, that's not super clear but I hope you get what I mean). I hope I can become more honest and learn to hear me, instead of thoughts about me... if you have any advice there, I am all ears! PS the NiN song 'Broken' would've been epic as a background under this vid...
It's a tricky thing listening to the right voice when there are so many of them telling you what you are should be. I love adding nine inch nails to the background of my videos! I think I would get in trouble if I used it on a long form video, but shorts, reels, and tiktoks are always great for NIN!
@@joshsorrell I know (nin), that’s why I mentioned it!
I thought that might be the case!
I love your style and I'll never forget it. Your way of playing with color is unmatched. You can feel the intensity of your colors being brought up and their protagonism as they pass through your pieces. It has influenced my work to a great extent. Keep doing this. We artists are flowers blooming in God's garden and we cannot think of what we do as lesser ever. Humbly strive forward and let your talent rise weightlessly as it deserves. Your quality is noticeable because it's so nourishing to look at. Wish you the best good sir!
Thank you for the compliment! I'm glad my work has help you in your own work. Take care, Josh
Thanks for the demo, just bought some oil pastels to try, same as you I paint in oils and water colours, used dry pastels before but never oil pastels, would be great if you tried another one,😊
Cool, hopefully you like them! I'll definitely have to try some others 😁
hello josh! great video!! will definitely try this exercise out, i am a painter myself. i find my portrait work to be very strict and restrictive, trying very hard to recreate my reference, this definitely will be a change. thank you for the video!
I'm glad you found it helpful! Take care!
good advice
Thank you!
Good work 🎉🎉🎉 12:37

hi m8 excellent painting, can I ask is. it acrylic's?
It's oil. Thanks

I wish your videos were longer. It would be nice to see all the colors listed being used. Beautiful work.
Thank you!.I describe everything thoroughly over on my patreon page for paintings just like this one. Lots of tutorials as well!
@@joshsorrell great to know. Ty
@@joshsorrell im silly. I also just went to your video section and forgot shorts arent all that exist for a moment. 😅😅
I like the format 🙏
Thank you!
Great information, beautiful painting! I love the deep greens for the base. There’s a smooth, calming quality to it…I don’t know why…just a feeling. I’m more into your blues, purples, and other bright colors for the abstract part. You are going to get shirt sponsors soon! Love them with or without the wrinkles😉 I can also use these videos to learn how to relax…you look so darn comfortable😌 Can’t wait to see more 🎉❤
Thank you! That would be pretty cool if I did get a shirt sponsor. Maybe I should sell my own wrinkly shirts 😁 I'm glad you like the chill vibe. Sitting on the couch is definitely making the videos more fun to make!
Love this form of video! You are legit funny😂 It’s also great to move my eyes back and forth between you and the painting. As someone who doesn’t paint, but is obsessed with your work, I definitely love getting to know you and your process better!! Thank you for being yourself😄 Yes, get the shirts straight from the clean hamper every time😎
Glad you like them so far Tiffany! I'll try to do that 😉
I watched the whole thing. I’ve been doing lives while I paint, but I never have anything to say really. 🤣 I appreciate your ability to talk! 🙌
Well thanks! It's not easy talking while painting for sure! Every time I do a class it's one of the challenges.
Enjoyed your video 👍🏼
Awesome, thank you!
Follow you on instagram already, immediately recognized the art, cool to see the process.
Cool glad you found me!
I think it costs more to advertise on the financial channels, so they do get a bigger cut. My computer programming channel gets about $3/1000 views. The chapters don't help with the views directly, but I think they are used in search engines as well as searches on TH-cam. So if you pick good keywords for your chapters, you may increase search visibility. Can't make any mean comment, the painting is great 🙂
That's a great point on the chapters. I was creating chapters up until the last couple videos to see if my view count was affected. I'll probably go back to doing that when I have time for it. Thanks for the compliment on the painting!
Beautiful painting! And thank you for the transparency. ✨
Thanks and you're welcome!
Looks great! The unedited video has a cool and nice vibe. Awesome job! Keep it that way!
Thank you so much! I'll definitely try!
This was a joy to watch. Thanks. Throw T-shirt in dryer with a damp washcloth.
Thanks for the tip! I'm glad you liked the video!
I like these videos where you just talk
Thanks!
Next time, take a damp, wash off cloth.Put your shirt in there with it and it's a dryer cycle full-time.Whatever your dryer says in a little take any wrinkles out
Great tip thanks!
I am a small doll maker who works with air dry clay. I want to improve my skin tones with different ethnic face tones. There is not a lot of info at all on this so been watching artists like you but air dry clay is different then paper a bit. My trouble is highlights on black skin tone wish someone would address this .
You should probably become an expert with the impressionist palette of colors so you can make small adjustments with your colors to find the colors that work best.
@@joshsorrell what is the Impressionist pallet?
@@juliejelaco5208 its a set of around 10 to 12 colors roughly that gives you every color you need to reach about 95 percent of the color spectrum. My impressionist palette is ultramarine blue, phthalo blue, burnt umber, burnt sienna, alizarin claret, cadmium red, cadmium orange, yellow ochre, cadmium yellow, cadmium yellow light, and titanium white. There are two colors for each primary. One blue leans more purple, the other more green. One red leans more purple, the other more orange. The yellow leans more orange, and the other more green. This ensures you can hit every color possible with some color mixing. There are many variations of this palette and mine is pretty typical
@@joshsorrell thank you so much for taking your time to share this with me, not many people even answer your ? On you tube, so your outstanding!
@@juliejelaco5208 no problem! My pleasure.
haha, love this "I'm not gonna read them anyway" great painting, too! Looking forward to the next vid :)
I'm glad you liked it! Hopefully I'll accidentally be funny in the next video!
@@joshsorrell haha, I’ll see you in the next one!
I'm a new subscriber, this is the first video I've watched from you and quite enjoyed seeing the process and you on the side there rambling on haha, for me it's quite relatable.
That's awesome to hear! Thank you so much for subscribing! I'm glad you can catch me right as I'm trying out something new!
Can this method also be applied to acrylic paintings?
It can be! It's a little trickier with acrylic because it dries so darn fast!
We don't care about the shirt! Wrinkles and wisdom is in!
That's good to hear since I don't own an iron! As far as wisdom goes, that might be hit or miss 😁
I would love to see you more! I liked this set up :)
That's good to hear! I definitely enjoyed not having to edit as much!
When you say tones, is that the same as value?
Yep, tone and value are the same
