X6100 - N9BQA QSO 20m FT4 5w - N7JFP
Using a Ziegu X6100 set for 5 watts I have a QSO with N9BQA on 20m using FT4. Software programs used are WSJT-X, JTAlert and GridTracker. I noticed the X6100 with FW 1.1.6 now accepts WSJT-X command to set it to U-DIG, before V1.1.6 it would reset to USB. HRD Logbook used for logging.

I am using the X6100 power set to 2 watts and USB. JTDX is producing the FT8 signals. I have Grid Tracker, JTAlert and HRD Logbook. It took a while to complete the QSO of 2100 miles using only 1.9 watts. I am amazed that you can use so little power out and complete a QSO. Part of the video I speeded up (6x) to shorten the duration.

I am using JTDX (a WSJT-X Twin) to make a QSO on 20m. My X6100 is putting out almost 5 watts with an external PS. For visuals I attached Grid Tracker and JTAlert via a Multicast IP in JTDX. I didn't have HRD Logbook loaded at the time for logging QSO. Loaded Logbook and got the QSO logged. I monitor the audio in/out of JTDX with Virtual Audio Cable/Repeater/analyzer connection.

I changed the screen layout to get a bigger X6100 display. WSJT-X is connected directly to the X6100. Audio repeaters and analyzers keep an eye on the IN/OUT audio of WSJT-X. X6100 has external power supply and it is set for 5 watts out. The X6100 is set for USB. Made one QSO on 20m with FT8. Try and adjust the X6100 for ALC of 100 to get about 4.7 watts out.

I’ve been looking everywhere to be told ‘you need 2 connections between the radio and computer’ ; a usb connection and a signalink connectio. Is there anywhere a primer on physical connections? I assume I’d need the signalink to have the software key the radio for transmit. Thank you.

    • @N7JFP

Check this video: th-cam.com/video/CWTg3qw7YRA/w-d-xo.html In video a drawing of connections. If you want CAT control signals going to the radio you do need an software driver interface for Data (Serial Port). For the audio portion you will need two audio ports (Mic/Speaker) defined on one USB port. Older radios used two ports. One for the CAT and one for Audio. Newer radios with built-in Sound Card only need one USB port. CAT/Audio go over the same USB port. Some USB port software is loaded in the radio and some need to be loaded on your Laptop. Good Luck, 73, N7JFP Larry

Therein lies the problem- how many cores, how many turns? One can't just wind some turns of coax (or balanced wire in this instance) on a core and assume that it will then effectively choke off the common mode current- in fact, the wrong combination can increase common mode. The 2nd issue lies in the fact that one cannot make a 4:1 CURRENT mode balun on a single core. What the author has constructed is a 4:1 TRANSFORMER with completely unknown choking characteristics. His transformer must then be followed by a 1:1 choke with high real part (R) of the choking impedance. If one does not have access to a commercial VNA, you can purchase one of the nano-VNA's and learn how to use it to measure the common mode impedance of a 'balun' or 'unun' versus frequency. This balun is wound incorrectly. Both sides of the torroid should be wound in the same direction. See TRX lab video #105. He did it correctly. You should be showing your polarity (dot) marks as he does. I did a mesh current analysis using mutual inductances and it came out exactly right using TRX’s polarity directions. As he indicates what you have is two stacked auto transformers giving a turns ratio of 2 and a impedance transformation of N squared or 4.

WSJT-X digital modes with Ham Radio Deluxe for mainly control and logging. I use GridTracker and JTAlert for the audio and visual effects. Thanks for watching. 73, N7JFP

What size tubing did you use for this project. Nice build.
