เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 12 ก.พ. 2022
Welcome to the Froghair Farm, glad you're here. I am into old machinery, especially Massey Ferguson tractors along with Caterpillar and John Deere crawlers. The videos you'll find here will range from machine-specific, to projects, to looking after my native priairie stands among other interests.
It's called the Froghair Farm as it is about as much of a farm as a frog has hair.
I hope you enjoy.

A Long Haul Home with Some "New" Stuff
I've been looking for a baler for a while now and none that were close by were too far gone to bother with, others were waaay too far away, so I found a couple of things at about the limit of distance. I'm happy to get the MF 124 baler, and the disc plow is a curiosity!

Progress on the Scale Advance Rumley - Tune up Complete

With a little help from a steam enthusiast, I was able to get the little engine in time and running pretty well. This is our second time steaming it and we are pleased with the progress. As with anything that hasn't seen much use or care for awhile, when one thing is done another two pop up. We have a steam leak that will be easily fixed, and our clutch is slipping, again not too difficult, but...

I have always been infatuated with steam power, and while on FB marketplace, half-heartedly looking for a baler - this came up. Had to have it. Unfortunately, it came with a couple of problems, one being it was out of time and would only run backward. I got that figured out, but as you will see, the shake-down cruise wasn't totally smooth sailing. This is a scale model of, from the best I can t...

Massey Ferguson 1020 with the tiller
มุมมอง 2545 หลายเดือนก่อน
I am tilling the plowed rye before the clod dry to the consistency of bricks and to retain some moisture overall. If I could have been in the field 10-12 hours earlier, it would have been better, but not bad for what we have here.
Plowing Down the Rye
มุมมอง 1385 หลายเดือนก่อน
The little MF 1020 punches above its weight, but met its match in the plow. Fortunately, the Ford 2N stepped in to show the youngster how it's done. The two tractors are about the same horsepower, but the 2N has two huge advantages: 1) It weighs more, and 2) it has the Ferguson System, meaning draft control. As a result, a 2N will run plowing circles around a 4wd compact tractor of similar HP. ...

I love the little 1020 and all of its 21HP. I mostly use it these days to run the 4ft tiller, but have disced with it and used it as my fire engine when burning prairie. They are tough little machines and are hard to stop, they just don;t go down the road too fast. In fact one of the things I really like about it is that itcan absolutely crawl when tilling. Who do you recommend for TO35 parts like ignition, water pump, electrical in general, hydraulics (need to rebuild pump and piston), brakes, ....... I inherited a very used but no longer running family owned TO35 that was worked hard. I am going to restore it as it is a family heirloom (my family didn't have much). I am very mechanical and so just need a manual and good parts sources. The rest will be a labor of love.
I can't say that I have a specific recommended source for the parts. There are several vendors that offer the components you are looking for. The one thing I would say is that if it still has the original generator I would rebuild it if it isn't working rather than go to an alternator. Electronic ignition is a good idea too.
Looking at at 1955 Ferguson TO35 tomorrow for a good price and thanks to your video I know as long as it runs and operates well I'm getting a good old tractor here.
either way, it's a good rig.
@@froghairfarm Agreed! For $1500 in today's homeadeading demand for these tractors, I think I got a great deal. The old girl ran great and everything worked minus a front headlight which is no big deal. It has a nice front loader on it with a bucket. It has separate hydraulics running off the engine's front shaft with optional 2 way controls so I can put on implements such as a snow plow on it with hydaulic lift and side to side tilt. Tractor just needs a good servicing changing all the fluids and filters and she's ready to work. The owner lost his job and needs quick cash to just get by he hated to have to sell the old girl. I feel bad for him, as I've been in that situation before too.
we just got 30 and we having a great time with it runs great
Awesome, great to see they are getting some love!
What you really need is a spike-toothed drag, you wouldn't have needed the disc. Spike wouldn't have pulled up the sod as much as you might think.
I hit it with the harrow after the disc, the plow-clods needed some persuasion first!
I have what I think is a 49 or 50 model. Not sure if it's to 20 or 30. It is all blue, with a lighter blue underneath. No gray at all. I have yet to see another blue one. Anyone know why??
If it has an air intake on the dash, you have a 30, without, it is a 20. Paint-wise, it really can't tell you much, people painted these in all kinds of ways, including with left over house paint. Also, if the tag is still on the engine and readable, a 30 will have a Z-129 Continental and a 20 a Z-120.
@froghairfarm Thanks. Figured out it's a 1950 To 20. Can't figure out the paint but it looks like a dealer did it. I started tearing it down yesterday for a mild restoration. I did find some red on the oil pan also.🤷♂️
That's cool. So, a 20 was originally all grey, very much like Rustoleum smoke grey.
@froghairfarm It's been in my family for over 50 years, named it Ole blue. I'll probably do a blue and gray combination for sentimental reasons.
30 a poor man.s 35😢

Thank you for the video. I'm in the process of buying a 1955 Ferguson TO 35. Not a green belly. I'm looking forward to getting it in a few days. Thanks for saying the 6 volt system is fine...it seems like folks say its a major upgrade...
That's fantastic, it is a great tractor. With 6V, just be sure you have heavy battery cables, the reason many don't like 6Vis that the cables have been replaced with lighter ones suitable for a 12V system, and they don't realize the negative impact.
Wonderful video. Much appreciated.
Glad it was helpful!
Great little tractors we had one growing up the tractor never ler us down . Used it to scrap the barn lot and rake hay
@@georgecass8529 great little machines and still useful today
Really enjoyed the video. My dad bought a 1953 TO 30 new after he came out of the Army. I was born in 1947 and grew up with that tractor, can't remember when I was turned loose on it by myself. After watching this I wish Dad would have waited a couple of years and bought a 35, I hated when we had to turn the rear wheels to cultivate since they had calcium chloride in them. I believe Dad bought the tractor, plow and cultivator for $1200.
@@Bohica-tq3ps That’s a great story, I hated moving the wheels too. Dad seemed to always want to change the setup! Our 35 back in the day didn’t have the power adjust wheels. I will say we could set it all the way wide and cultivate strawberries- just the ticket,
I got a 1020 hydrostatic its got a loader and power steering i use it for brush hoging and lots of loader work it runs a 6 ft cut no problem its got 1500 hours and no problems yet the 1014 loader for these things are great they lift 1500 lbs no problem all my tires are loaded i just can't believe the stuff it can do i do more with it than i use my 100 hp lamborghini loader tractor
That’s awesome. I’d love to have a 1014 loader. They definitely punch above their weight!
We worked a Ferguson 30 on my grandparent's farm in the late 1950's....early '60's. We used it mostly for hay mowing (rear mounted sickle bar) and for pushing windrows of cured hay to haystack sites with a front mounted buck rake. It was a great dependable machine. The farm was in Carroll County in Southwest Virginia.... hilly land. I enjoyed this great video comparing the 30 and 35. I've always wondered what the differences are. Richard....age 81
Hey Richard! Thanks for the comment. While the MF 180 is my favorite tractor, the 35 has a special place as I grew up running one of them for many hours. The 35 is a definite upgrade from the TO20-30 with much improved hydraulics, two-stage clutch, and two-range transmission. You could go a lot slower with a 35, which may seem like not much of a plus, but when you are running a transplanter putting in 50,000 strawberries or cultivating the same, slow is good!
It's a compact tractor and everything is meant to be compact... go look at your alternator/generator.... it's so cute!
@@TheManKnownAsJR - hehe just cute as a button that alternator! Tower of power.
Nice tractors, from the 20 all the way up through the 135...but seems to be from what I have seen, the Continental engines in them seem quite a bit more fragile than a comparable Ford tractor engine, and the transmissions/2 stage clutch setups seem more fragile than the Fords also....
My only Ford experience is with the 9/2N tractors, I don't have a point of reference, however, I have never thought of these as very fragile. In all the hours our family has put on Massey's, I cannot recall a clutch or engine failure.
I have a Massey 95 rotary cutter. Works fine for cutting pastures that have been grazed. It does not like thick tall grass or thick tall ragweed. The thick stuff causes the blades to stop. If only it was shaft driven instead of belt it would be a beast. Overall it’s been reliable and I like it.
@@jakek9765 not many of them around- mine does fine with tall grass and sunflower I don’t have too much ragweed around but a heavy patch would test it for sure
Been looking for the same baler for sometime now….. good to see they’re still about while we r looking back to the good old haystacks
I guess I must've missed it in the video, but what are the brand, size/model, and weight of the wheel weights? I have a 2606H and I'm considering some weights. Thanks in advance.
I bought them from Taylor Foundry in TX. I don't recall the model #, but you can find them on their site. They ar e 150# each, two each side for me and that seems to be working great.
This rig any good for log hauling in the woods?
I would say that it depends on the size of logs you want to drag! If you are skidding them, it won;'t take a very large log, if you are pulling firewood in a trailer, it would haul a decent amount, but be mindful these don't weigh much and the barkes need to be in good working order. If you are buying one for that purpose, I'd take a hard look at a 9 or 2N Ford, cheaper, heavier and twice the HP.
@@froghairfarm great info thanks
You will be able to adjust the steering some; I’ve had some where the square head barely protrudes from the clamp. After it’s been driven awhile, you likely will have to back the adjustment off, as the frictions/disks will clean themselves.
When I get the pony back together I'll give it a run regardless, but would have liked to have a bit more adjustment!
You need the generator to run the tack. Harder and harder to find rebuilders for that stuff. My go-to guy just retired.
Yep, tach drive needed for sure. I do ahve a guy, but it takes a while. Definitely a=harder to come by.
The steam valve must be set correctly. It doesn't sound right.
I agree it isn’t fully correct and works against itself. However, when I set the valve to work perfectly in one direction it will not run at all in the other direction. It almost appears that the valve itself is too short
my to30 have a toolbox on it size of the hood in the exterior and has a starter. seem like mine different lol
Great videos, excellent tractor, reminds me of the ones that my dad had around the farm. Curious to know if you fill the 2605H with the #2 red-dyed (cheaper) or regular vehicle diesel?
Thanks! I appreciate the compliment. It is a great tractor and I use off-road Diesel (red), fortunately I have a station that sells small quanities. I have used both though and the only difference is taxes.
It sounds like you were in high range, those hydros are fine loder work but definitely gesr transmission if you wa t heavy work. That is the same weight as a 9N they work that all day long. Ag tires and 8×8 trans i bet it wouldve been great.
I may have been in the 2nd range and agree a gear trans is MUCH better for this work!
You happen to find brakes for that tractor I've been looking for a while haven't had luck
I haven't had to find them, but you may look into having your re-lined if the backing is in good shape.
No 2 stage clutch on that one with the 8x8 trans but it does have an independent PTO. If it had a 2 stage clutch I would have kept mine!
Hmm, maybe we have different definitions (or tractors). In this case, when you push the clutch part way down, the tractor stops and PTO runs, push it all the way down, both stop.
@froghairfarm the 2605H should have a standard split torque clutch. The PTO is not influenced by operating the clutch pedal. It is it's own separate power system utilizing a hydraulic clutch pack to engage and disengage the PTO independently of the transmission by way of a lever under the left side of the seat. You can engage and disengage it any time you want regardless of clutch position. The 2604H has an option for the old school 8x2 trans that utilizes the 2 stage clutch like you're describing but if you have the 8x8 synchro shuttle it's got a normal single stage clutch and the PTO is operated independently of the transmission or clutch. I prefer the two stage clutch myself. I'm known to find trees stumps when bush hogging and it is nice to be able to shove the clutch pedal all the way down and kill power to the PTO.
@@justkeepingitreal7768 🤷🏻♂️ you are probably right, all I know is that when I push the clutch part way the tractor stops, pto runs, all the way down all stops just like my 35 deluxe.
@@froghairfarm that is odd because the 2605H 2606H and 2607H with the 8x8 trans doesn't have a two stage in it. I love mowing with the little 135 because of the clutch. I honestly sold my 2606H because the 135 two stage just works better for me and my mowing.
What part of the country is this sir?
I am in Eastern Kansas, Around Lawarence/Topeka
I’m interested in putting the rear hydraulic connectors or remote hookups to run a log splitter
I have the same tractor as yours
I had mine put on before delivery by the dealer and I know they can be added at any time. It seems I looked around for a kit other than the dealer but did not find one.
The plow would bury it😁
For sure - I didn’t want to bring the tractor and plow in for that but now I remember I have a one bottom that would be just right for the little tractors I have here - or…. Find a Ferguson 2 bottom 🤭 hmmmmm
Try some sweet clover I want to try some lentils for a covercrop rye is ok if you dont get it to ripe it can self pollinate and raise hell for years in a dryer climate.
I’ve been thinking of sweet clover and have the seed but that stuff is good at self seeding too! Hehe
We use winter rye in our garden. I let it get between 2 and 3 ft tall, then either roll it or cut it and then plow and disc. Stuff is amazing. There is noticeably less weeding since we started that and soil is full of earthworms.
I had planned on getting to it at about 2ft high, but.... I'd agree that weeds are suppressed. Buckwheat had a similar effect, but you get a lot of volunteer buckwheat!
@@froghairfarm Good to know! I've never tried buckwheat. Also I really enjoy your tractor videos. I collect vintage garden tractors mostly since I only have a small plot of land but recently picked up a Massey Harris and a Ferguson Pony for restoration projects. Growing up we did market gardening and between using a 101jr, Super M and 9n I caught the old tractor bug LOL.
If buckwheat smells dirt, it grows! The Pony's are fun little tractors and I may have the same illness, possibly.
@jeremydavis2595 - at one point years ago we had about 25 acres of strawberries, plus sweet corn, etc. We ran a Ferguson 35, Case VAC, and a MH22. On the "regular" farm ground mostly larger MF tractors, but we had a Farmall MD that was a favorite, super efficient and the fastest on the road.
wow! how do you keep your passes so straight? I started plowing last year and haven't yet mastered it. i have trouble with the tractor pulling to the right when in the furrow. I have the same tractor as you, MF 2607H.
Well, I started young with "corrective reinforcement" supplied by my father :). Burned in pretty well.... But, the best advice came from my grandfather, he said: "when you open the field, pick a spot at the other end, close one eye and take a picture of the relationship between it and the tractor, then steer accordingly. Also, just like when riding a motorcycle, you will steer where you look, so if you have to look away, stop first until you get the hang of it. Great tractors btw.
How much?
Already sold, can't recall the price.
Hi I have one of this tractors and I have been working on it. Where would you recommend to get maintenance supplies? and also parts? Great video! Thank you
I get parts from the dealer, ebay, salvage, and aftermarket suppliers depending on shat I need. They are easy to source parts for.
I have one I still use....not the biggest or best but it will clean grain as good or better than some of today's machines....good little machine!
Definitely not the biggest!! I'll make a video and give a report if it turns out I have a little wheat to combine.
Great machine!
hehe - I love my little 1020, she's tough
I have the exact same tractor and want to add remote hydraulics. Having a tough time finding the right parts. Please advise.
@jeffkeith4668 - I got the kit from the dealer, I haven't looked for an aftermarket kit.
Fire always pushes it towards grass🤔. My native with alfalfa, the alfalfa survived the Early burn👍🏻
For sure the grass benefits more overall. Early burns help the forbs more as the ground warms up a bit faster and gives them a small jump on the warm season grasses.
Nice video!! I'm looking at a 1963 Massey Ferguson Super 90 for sale. Would you recommend that for bushhogging and if so, what size bushhog do you think it could handle?
I am not super familiar with the 90's but I am sure it would handle 12-15' without much problem depending on what you're cutting. The 180 has 63hp at the pto and runs the 12' in heavy grass full width without breaking a sweat.
You have very nice tractors!! I have a TO30, two TO35s and a massey ferguson 165. Both of my 35s are 12 volt. One is a 1957. Second is the Delux and dosen't run yet. Maybe some day mine can look as nice as yours.
Right on - They are great little tractors. I have a soft spot for 35's especially.
Great video. Keep up the good work.
Thanks, will do! I'll have some time to make a few more soon.
Where do you find parts for the 1020?
I mostly just google for them, although you can get some from the dealer still but it is spotty.
Just curious if you sold it, and if you did..for how much? The Craigslist post was removed.
We have 1 we’re looking to sell. Ours isn’t as nice as your though
@andreahoevet497 It did sell, a couple hundred less than my asking if you recall what that was.
The fel will always block the front lights even though the led is a better choice in lighting. I installed a canopy on my M-F 1526, & installed led lights adjustable front & rear just under the canopy with nothing blocking the lights; What a difference even with fel at a safe operating height while moving. Those M-F 1840's are really nice tractors. I have a friend who bought a M-F 1840M last year with the shuttle shift, & a cab what a beauty.
That's why I used the magenetic base so I can reposition them to give best light according to what I am doing. They can be stuck to the ROPS for instance. The 1840's are nice the M version is a heavier machine, your friend's tractor is a nice machine!
Nice machine. I have a slightly older 420 dozer with PTO(ed). Your three point hitch makes me jealous. One question , what do those plates in front of each track do?
They are check plates. What they do is knock the ridge off of raised bed rows when going across them to level the ride.
@@froghairfarm thanks .
I have a Ferguson that i bought at an auction. It is marked 35, but i know it is not a 35. I dont really know what it is. It looks like a TO-30. Whoever had it before really cobled it up. By watching your video, it looks tile a 30. I sure would like to know for sure.
A couple of things to determine what you have: A) 1 gear lever and 4 speeds = 20 or 30, 2 gear levers = 35 B) 2 levers on hydraulic controls = 35
30 had one shift lever 4 speeds forward, one reverse. Dead PTO. 35 has 2 shift levers gives 6 forward 2 reverse. Live PTO 2 stage clutch.
Great tractor! I have one exactly like it. 2022 2605h
It’s fantastic, love mine
Thanks! I looking to upgrade from my '06 1540, and have been going back and forth between the H series and a 2850E. While I love my 1540, I need more lifting capacity. The H series just seem more "tractor-like" than the design of the compacts.
@garytitus8298 - I also have a 1840E, there is no comparison when it comes to robustness. The 2605 is larger for sure, but it is built far heavier. There's a big difference in lifting capability and feeling safe. It really depends on how you'll use it. If I had to select one to keep and one to go, I'd hang onto the 2605 in my case. I haven't looked at the 2850, so I can't comment there. The 2605 is more suited for agricultural work (if you do any) and really doesn't give anything up otherwise unless you want a hydro trans, which you cannot get on the 2605.
Think you said the 30 had 3 forward speeds. Actually 4 forward.
@arvbergstedt3303 You are 100% correct. I was kicking myself after I made the video!
I have a 53 TO 30 and I don’t think I’ll part with it anytime soon. It’s a handy sized tractor for little jobs around the farm. I do think Ferguson was a half step behind Ford after they split in 47, but still a very serviceable tractor.
I may have a friendly difference of opinion, but I have a fondness for both the early Fords and these Fergies
