    Such a great video, thank you for sharing. I have one question, how often can I refire a mug? I have refired a mug already 3 times and want to try it one more time before I give up 😅, where do you think is the limit of refireings for a clay body? I was reading the clay can get stressed out and be bridle after too many firings- but didn't said how many are too many 😅 (Firings are to cone 5 1/2)

    Hello! thank you for all the information it was very helpful. Question, I load the kilns in a community studio and might like to do this because I have many runners and there is not enough time to grind shelves sometimes. Is it ok if a small amount falls on the bottom of the kiln to the soft brick ?

    Thank you for the info. That would be great product to use under the tiles/plaques but my biggest concern is that silica is very dangerous for our body, it’s cancerous, should not be inhaled. When I looked at you, I’m quite surprised how you handled it. I appreciate your comments on this. Thnx

    • @jhpotteryworks6023
      @jhpotteryworks6023 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m glad you enjoyed the video! Yes, I agree with you immensely that silica is a dangerous material to inhale, but its the airborne silica particles that are a problem. Not the ones bonded and hardened in the sand. If I were to crush he sand into a powder and release the silica particles into the air, that would be a grave concern. Same thing with dry vs. wet clay. Wet clay contains silica but it is not harmful to you in this stage. Once the clay becomes 100% dry and those silica particles can be released in the air, then you have a silica concern. Which is why when I mix glaze or sweep the studio I wear a double respirator.

The company was established in 2003. In the past two decades, the company has been committed to the research and development of powder iron removal and purification technology. The "ZR0709 series electromagnetic powder iron removal equipment" independently developed by the company has a high magnetic field gradient, a unique structure, and a significant iron removal effect. It is widely used in new high-purity powdered silicon, carbon materials and high-end materials required by photovoltaic, lithium batteries, and electronic products. Iron removal and purification treatment of powder materials in ceramics, high-end building materials, abrasives, chemicals, refractories and other industries. Since the product was put on the market, it has been highly recognized by users. It can partially replace the traditional high-polluting pickling and iron removal purification process and solve an important technical problem for customers, thus creating a new era of physical iron removal. In 2011, it passed the appraisal and acceptance of the quasi-expert group of the Provincial Economic and Information Commission, and the main technical indicators reached the international level. This product has been granted a number of national patents by the State Intellectual Property Office (Patent No.: ZL2011203128583, ZL2012200761494, etc.) The main products include ZR0709 series electromagnetic separator and electromagnetic separator. Thanks for the video... I'm a new potter and my first Glaze fire ran too hot... basically set at cone 6 and the witness cone was completely melted... so I'm guessing it ran cone 7... or maybe hotter :( Anyway-- it is all a learning experience. I decided to get witness cones for my bisc so I could check before I do my next glaze... and the weirdest thing happened- the witness cones reacted the opposite way... 04, 05, 06, 07... should be most bent to to least, right? (or maybe I'm completely wrong) Instead 04 was bent perfect (yeah!) but 06 and 07 were completely melted to my kiln shelf :(... What am I missing? Thanks for any tips you can offer, they would be much appreciated.

    • @jhpotteryworks6023
      @jhpotteryworks6023 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You’re not doing anything wrong! Cone 04 is hotter than cone 06 and 07. It seems backwards but when there is an “0” in front of the cone, as the temp increases and gets hotter, then number goes down. Once you reach cone 01, you drop the “0” and then count cone 1, 2, 3, etc. Does that make sense? I’d also recommend getting a cone chart too which you can hang in the studio.

    Hi, thank you for your very instructive video. I wanna reglaze some of my pots but don't have a heatgun, I only have a blowtorch. But I'm afraid I might damage somehow, or break the pot with the flame if the pot is quite thin? I throw with stoneware but quite thin... Any recommandations using a blowtorch to heat up the pot?

    • @jhpotteryworks6023
      @jhpotteryworks6023 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much for your kind words on the video! If you’re using a blow torch, I would recommend setting the flame to a lower setting so its not full blast. The last thing you want to do is over heat the pottery and it shatters. I’d also put the pottery on some kind of banding wheel so you can spin it at an even rate and move the flame over the piece. If you hold it directly on one spot you run the risk of shattering it. Hope that helps!

    I suppose you can only make your kiln "hold" a temperature if its programmable, correct? A kiln sitter, or a manual-automatic wouldn't lend itself to that, would it?

    • @jhpotteryworks6023
      @jhpotteryworks6023 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, sort of. You can have you kiln sitter do a “hold” but it would only be at the end of a firing. You’d need to stick around to see the sitter drop, then flip it back up, turn the kiln back on, hold the sitter in the up position, and keep the kiln on for the length of hold time you want. Other than that it would be difficult to do a hold during the firing itself.

    • @jhpotteryworks6023
      @jhpotteryworks6023 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bonnie Bradbury there isn’t a specific place to put each cone. You’ll just want to make sure they’re farthest away from the thermocouple. That way you get an accurate reading. Other than that, it’s ok to vary their location to help provide as much info as to the internal atmosphere of your kiln

    According to the Orton manual it says after an accurate firing the tip of the cone should line up with the top of the cones base, not the bottom of the base. So im confused bc a lot of ppl are judging it y the tip lining up with the bottom of the base and wouldnt that mean it's over fired?

    • @jhpotteryworks6023
      @jhpotteryworks6023 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The distance between the top of the base and the kiln shelf are probably so minor that we’re only talking a few degrees difference. Once the cone begins to flatten after it touches the shelf then you’d be in the hotter stages of that cone
