Question, I load the kilns in a community studio and might like to do this because I have many runners and there is not enough time to grind shelves sometimes. Is it ok if a small amount falls on the bottom of the kiln to the soft brick ?
Thank you for the info. That would be great product to use under the tiles/plaques but my biggest concern is that silica is very dangerous for our body, it’s cancerous, should not be inhaled. When I looked at you, I’m quite surprised how you handled it. I appreciate your comments on this. Thnx
I’m glad you enjoyed the video! Yes, I agree with you immensely that silica is a dangerous material to inhale, but its the airborne silica particles that are a problem. Not the ones bonded and hardened in the sand. If I were to crush he sand into a powder and release the silica particles into the air, that would be a grave concern. Same thing with dry vs. wet clay. Wet clay contains silica but it is not harmful to you in this stage. Once the clay becomes 100% dry and those silica particles can be released in the air, then you have a silica concern. Which is why when I mix glaze or sweep the studio I wear a double respirator.

I get my silica sand from the Brickyard Ceramics in Indianapolis. However, you should be able to get it from any local clay supplier

Yup! I’d recommend using it for large, flat pieces. It’ll act as tiny ball bearings and help your piece contract evenly in the cool down
What’s the temperature rating I’m looking for something that can hand 3000 degrees
Silica sand can you to 3100° so you should be good!
