    I had the opportunity to handle an original all steel Remington pocket model once. It had an original cartridge conversion cylinder in it for .32 rimfire. It still had the standard percussion loading lever as well. Suffice to say the gun was pretty much “shot-out”, lots of play in the various moving parts and there was a bit of metal broken off of the hammer. It def seemed to seen some pretty frequent use in its life. It’s always cool to get a chance to examine the originals when you can, but if someone is interested in shooting them regularly, I think the modern clones are the way to go. Better quality materials and tighter tolerances vs a banged up original. However, the look and feel of an aged original can’t be beat!

    Just discovered your little channel. I like you have a small channel. As for replica cap&ball I prefer Remingtons, followed by Rodgers and Spencer over colt. That being said I have to agree with you. The 1863 is my least favorite one of two Remingtons I don't care for. Mine is steel frame peitta. I have not shot a round ball in my cap&ball revolvers since about 1982, except for .31 caliber. About 3 years ago I developed my own line of conicals. Starting with the. 31 first. Tested eight different weights and profiles, and h5 solid contenders. Weights of my 60, 65, and 72 grain bullet's fit easily into my Remington, and a 77 gr that will with some fandangaling. I also have a 90 grain that works well in colts. By the way I have a set of fake pearl grips made to fit your CVA. Been considering a conversion cylinder for mine Mountain man

    I've heard a number of people swear that the 1863 Remington wasn't made with a brass frame. This is incorrect. While the vast majority of 1863 Remingtons were steel framed guns, it started life with a brass frame.

    No ear protection shooting a .44 cal black power handgun isn't something I would recommend. Eye protection has always been optional because you "might" put your eye out if you are accident prone and clumsy. You "WILL" 100% lose your hearing shooting large caliber firearms without ear protection on a regular basis.

    I have examined many original colts. They all have a stiff hammer spring. I have made a dozen hammer springs for Uberti,Pieta revolvers. Starting with 1095 spring steel 1/8” thick cut and tapered both width and length. Drill the hole bend to shape and harden with propane torch then quench in oil. No need for two springs stacked.

    Looks like you are having better fortune than I. my channel had multiple videos with a brand new Uberti ‘61 that has reliability problems as well as a loose barrel and wedge. They finally replaced the gun after two repair trips. The replacement gun solved the loose barrel but the gun kept misfiring. As unlikely as it may sound, I am now of the suspicion occurring is a two different CCI 11 cap tins purchased two different places are both defective. With two guns having the same issue. Otherwise it is a great gun and a good shooter. Action feels good. Nice video and demo

    I’m with you on the smaller hole nipples but the original hammer springs I’ve seen were way stronger than the Uberti stamped sheet type. That prevents originals from most cap jams. My several uberti’s all benefit with much stronger springs.

    I have one of those that I bought through Taylor’s and company. I did a cartridge conversion with mine so I can shoot more. Loading was taking too long! lol I cast my own bullets and shoot a 230 grain round nose in 45 colt with a small charge of smokeless powder. As long as I keep the velocity under 850 fps, it’s supposed to be safe. It is surprisingly accurate. I also made some elk antler grips for it.

      @@robertmckinley2030 Yep, you punch them out of old pop can aluminum strips. You can use crushed strike anywhere match tip heads, toy roll cap gun caps or the 22Reloader kits to charge them with. Watching people measure their powder like he is doing and wasting it as you close the spout is also not something I would be doing at the current price and availability of black powder. I would do it over a sheet of paper or over a bucket or empty whip cream tub or something and catch the extra spill rather than wasting it letting it fall on the ground or bench. After you waste just 12 or so overfill loads that would nearly load one more if you caught the excess and reused it.

    Cap jams are typically solved by handling, not shooting as if it was a modern cartridge revolver. Also, nipples are tapered now so upgrading from factory is a great idea in addition to a better main spring. Springs are not as strong as they used to be, especially Uberti. 25+ years ago caps were made thicker, heavier and never blew apart causing jams. More often than not they had to be pryed off the nipples after shooting! Rolling the caps with even pressure and seating them properly works with these cheaply made modern caps. But a mid 19th century percussion firearm will always have cap jam possibilities. Not Handling it like a modern revolver typically solves any issues. I Like the channel, may need to subscribe.

    The “belt model” pistol has screws coming in from the other side and while these earlier Remington clones from the defunct makers had a smaller grip the rest of the frame is the same basic size and the newer manufactured guns. You didn’t make a landslide discovery here but the gas relief, crescent cuts, in the frame are smaller and a lot of folks think these are more like the earlier Beals patent guns.

    • @earlyamericanarms7303
      @earlyamericanarms7303 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for the info. I know about the screws. I stayed in the video it more aligns with or copies the belt model due to barrel size. And this is an early production model which is documented that they had the small frames like the Navy but were switched out to the full sized frame due to production cost. The main feature of this gun that makes it resemble a belt model is the 61/2” barrel.

      Adding or using a heavier mainspring helps with the blowback but causes other issues as the cap binding the area from the hammer to the recoil ring /discharge shoot area. A good smoothing of said area with a ceramic stone has helped but not rectified my binding situation. @@earlyamericanarms7303
