Hi, My name is Zak Boxall and I’m a Modeller, Texture and Look Development artist in the vfx industry. My aim for this channel is to share knowledge and provide value to people wanting to get in the industry or to learn more.
Generate the BEST cavity maps for your 3D models!
I've received a lot of requests to make my cavity map generator available as a separate download. So grab your Substance Designer cavity map generator in the link below.

I used to bake cavity maps out of Zbrush, but found it slow. I even tried baking high to low out of Substance Painter, but I never got the resolution or frequencies of details I wanted.
Displacement maps generally will contain all the information you need to extract masks of practically any frequency. This method... it's quicker, as displacement maps will always be exported + you can extract multiple masks at the same time.
Drag a slider to extract any frequency on the fly
Any method that saves me time in production is an absolute must!
I use this method for personal projects + live production assets. I'm biased, but I've not found any other method that comes close to this method.
Useful for all types of texturing, digi-doubles, creatures, characters - very useful for adding texture variation!
Use these masks for any texturing or rendering package: The Foundry Mari, Substance Painter, Substance Designer, Maya, Houdini, Blender.

Mari | Texture Creatures for VFX | Mix hand painted and procedural! TUTORIAL NOW AVAILABLE

This crocodile is part of a tutorial that I've recently released! GUMROAD LINK bit.ly/3dc9Jk7 No fancy plugins, no fancy brushes here. Complex masks driven by a generic soft brush. This is exactly how I like to work using hand painting - and mixing utility maps like cavity, curvature and procedurals to make complex highly detailed - but most importantly fully art-directed masks. Texture Tutorial | How to use Surface Imperfections - To add dust breakup
มุมมอง 6K4 ปีที่แล้ว
Hey everyone, it's been a while since I did a texture breakdown. Today I'm going to show you how I use dust scans to add imperfections to your surfaces. I use Substance Designer but these techniques are applicable for every piece of software - Blender, Mari, Substance Painter, Substance Designer, Redshift, Arnold etc. If you'd like to grab the textures I used in this tutorial you can grab them ...
Texturing Fundamentals - How to paint in Materials for VFX
มุมมอง 8K4 ปีที่แล้ว
Hello! This is the first of many videos centered around asset creation that I plan to release. Today I'm going to be talking about some texturing fundamentals, specifically how I analyse real life objects. This helps me to start planning the texturing process which helps me split an object into materials. No software covered in this part, but we'll jump into Mari in the next part to go over cre...

Making of Bertie The Elephant A Short VFX Film
มุมมอง 1.3K5 ปีที่แล้ว
We spent a few months on the pre-production process, planning out narrative ideas and narrowing down how we were going to tackle both the production and post-production. We looked to the work of various filmmakers and post houses, most notably The Mill and their SSE campaign which depicts an orangutan experiencing the city of London at night. We were intrigued by the look and colours of the cit...
Texturing Tutorial in Mari and Substance - For VFX Production by Zak Boxall
มุมมอง 16K5 ปีที่แล้ว
Gumroad gum.co/QEJIO I created this tutorial as a way to help people who are wanting to learn a little more about how we approach texturing to industry standards. Matching real life photo reference is something that I always recommend have at the start of a showreel when people ask me. I took photos of this actual space capsule from the London Science Museum and I document every step in order t...
Hello, any new courses on the horizon?
Love this! Big fan of the "know the basics" first approach.
Great video! What is you pc specs (cpu, mem and gpu) when working on mari?
Sir i bought this course of urs...can u pls tell hiw to make the cavity mask....did u used substance painter for it
Hey Zak, Just purchased your Tutorial for texturing the crocodile and I am looking forward to learning a lot! however the grunge maps and extractor tool download link I cannot find, could you point me in the right direction?
Hey hey! How long you think this tutorial would take to complete?
❤❤
Hi Zak. Thank you for the great tutorial. I Got a question for you. For the bottom part of the model, to create those holes, damages and etc., as far as I realized, you can create the same maps & textures as you made using substance designer, inside Mari itself. May I ask, what was the reason you jumped to substance designer to create maps for that part? The reason I am asking is I simply would love to see the process in the Mari rather than the substance designer. Thanks again
Hey! Honestly just the approach I took at the time. And by no means the best approach. I think the beauty of texturing is the fact that you can do things multiple different ways. It's all layering A over B, some packages just do things slightly different. The advantage to designer is the pattern generation and scattering of shapes. Other than that, it's all the same techniques that are translatable mari/designer
@@zakboxall Thank you for the reply To be honest, As more, I am watching your tutorials and learning Mari and understanding texturing concepts, I realize the fact that how creating procedural textures and patterns in Mari or even in the modelling process, could become a nightmare and be time-consuming. I hope we can see more texturing tutorials from you. Thanks again
Can you make those maps in Substance painter as well? or there's more in Designer in regards of the maps creation? Thanks for the video
Welcome back! Do you happen to have any more courses planned for gumroad?
I'd love to when I get the time, got a few ideas! Any particular types of texture courses you had in mind?
@@zakboxall I'm eagerly looking forward to anything you make! If it's possible, I would greatly appreciate some examples of organic texture work, transparency on bat wings for example, maybe human skin?
do you think its ok to start to mari with this course or should i watch an introduction course before?
I have a question regarding UVs. In production, many UDIMS are used for the issue of resolution, but my question is: With what software are the bake maps made? Because with Substance you can bake with different UDIM slots, but you have very little control, and in Marmosset, you have much more control but you can only bake in slot 1001. So what software is used? Thank you very much
U bake in substance. Then export them. Then we use those baked out maps in mari cuz substance is very slow when the model have a lot of udims
@@enjon9873 but in production too? I'm surprised if that's the case. Because you have no control of anything
@@sergiayza6276 I am a texture and lookdev artist at MPC. So you can trust me 😅😅
@@enjon9873 Ok. Thank you very much for the information
bought this course, probably one of the best mari tutorials I have watched
Hi Zak, thank you so much for sharing this! By any chance , is there a way for me to get a hand to those photo references, it's currently not available to download right now. Hopefully there's a way, I'd love to see the references :) Thank you!
Thank you for making this
Great tutorial, great cavity extractor, you've completely changed the rules. Is cavity Extractor able to export 8K maps?
Sometimes I'm wondering, it would be not easier to do photogrammetry for this kind of animal? photogrammetry and just clean up... done :D
Your work is very impressive! I was wondering, it wouldn't be better if you do photogrammetry on a real one?
Do I need designer for this? Or can I get cavity maps other ways?
What should be the minimal stat of my pc to be able to follow the cours without too much lag
WOw you're a good cinematic maker bro
nice one! Any chance to geth this HDRI ?
Hi Zak, I am from Germany and would like to buy your course, but I can not buy it because of the payment method. I have a normal bank card and paypal. Is there another way or other payment method to buy the course?
i got the tutorial but how do i get the cavity extractor tool for substance designer
Hey Zak, Thank you for great videos and tutorials. I know you are super busy but I would ask you please whenever you got free time, make a series of tutorials in normal speed about how to texture hard surface (like an old airplane) from scratch with all texture and mask preparation stages included from A to Z. I would appreciate it and it would be great help for people like me who want to start texturing artist carrier to understand the whole process. Thank you so much Zak
Will create a Substance Painter only tutorial in the near future?
Great stuff. Worth buying. It would be nice to see a tut focused on a mecha model.
U can just learn some rigging and animation And boom u got 10 million subscribers the next day
Bro Ur so underrated
I got really confused about this video: I connect maps direct into the shader, why need this material before the shader? :(
This is flat out incredible. Could you please consider creating more extensive Mari tutorials, perhaps a hard-surface focused one (some kind of a robot creature, vehicle etc.)?
Hey Zak, you got me hyped! I have one question before buying the tutorial though: Is it sped up and with lots of cuts or things done "behind the camera"? I am still trying to get used to Mari so I would value any little piece of information I can get without disorienting cuts my tiny brain can't process. Thank you in advance and stay safe!
He explains everything. I'm still watching but I take it that if later on he does speed it up, probably around repetitive painting stuff...
@@fn4957 Alright, appreciate it man!
super awesome course! just picked it up after my graduation from vfx school to sharpen those Mari skills up! I am running into an issue right at the beginning however when you set up the geo channels, are the ambient occlusion maps and curvature maps meant to be included in the course? or is that something I have to put together myself? as far as I can tell you don't go over making those in the first lesson, any help would be greatly appreciated.
damn this looks awesome
Q (that wasn't answered in course description): there is any part of that tutorial that show how use PBR materials to paint all their layers at once? I looking for tutorial that cover that + same feature but with clone stamp tool.
Thank you for this tutorial!
You're great, I've been waiting for such a training for a long time. I'm buying now :)
Fantastic tutorial! Do you have any plans for the lookdev process later?
lol been slacking on the capsule texturing course, well better finish it so i can get this beast of a tut
Finally! A decent creature texturing tutorial. Looks amazing
this is insane, no other description
Looks fantastic Zak, the world needs more content like this!
Thank you mate! 👍🏼👍🏼
hi, im Michael wilde and this is Zac Boxall's comment section
The apollo capsule course was really great, I'm definitely getting this one too. Thanks for putting great resources out there.
That’s really nice to hear, thanks for getting it!
Finallly 😍
Wohooo
Nice
When will the tutorial be released?
Hi Zak. Should your maps be used as scaler when used as overlays/screens?
Hey! Very nice tutorial! The part of connecting the template to the material seems a bit tedious to me. Isn´t there a way I could just save the material nodes with the connections and templates inside as a template itself? Maybe I´m missing something here, I´m still pretty much a noob with Mari :D Anyways, really enjoyed the video, I´m looking forward to see more! :)
Great result
