The current electric rate in California is on average 46 cents. Calculate that in addition to the average $40,000 buy in for an EV. I don't need a new car and the one I have will last me for the next 20 years. At 65 I'm not going to buy into the yet to be properly developed EV. For EV's, there are 2 big problems facing them - the production of electricity and the production of batteries. Both currently, are very dirty, inefficient, and destructive to the environment. 37% of electrical generation is from Natural gas. Natural gas is a hydrocarbon mixture consisting primarily of saturated light paraffins such as methane and ethane, both of which are gaseous under atmospheric conditions. The mixture also may contain other hydrocarbons, such as propane, butane, pentane, and hexane. 15% is from Coal. Burning coal produces environmentally harmful emissions. These include sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, particulates, carbon dioxide, mercury, and other heavy metals. These emissions can contribute to acid rain, smog, respiratory illnesses, lung disease, and global warming. 19% is from nuclear power plants - we all know the environmental impact of these. The remaining 29% is generated by wind, solar, and hydropower. Wind generators present their own unique environmental hazards which includes lithium-ion batteries as are also used in solar generators in addition to the solar panels themselves. The environmental impact associated with the production of lithium-ion batteries: Mining The extraction of lithium, cobalt, and nickel for lithium-ion batteries is energy-intensive and can cause environmental degradation, water depletion, and contamination. Mining often takes place in countries with poor environmental and human rights standards, and can disrupt habitats, pollute, and lead to worker poisonings and child labor. The mining process also requires large diesel trucks and fossil-fuel-powered refineries, which emit carbon dioxide and contribute to deforestation and biodiversity loss. Disposal Improper disposal of lithium-ion batteries can release toxic heavy metals into the environment, which can harm human health in the long term. Lithium-ion batteries can also overheat and catch fire if exposed to high temperatures or penetrated, releasing carbon monoxide and hydrogen cyanide. The environmental impact associated with the production of solar panels: Waste Solar panels can contain hazardous heavy metals like lead, cadmium, arsenic, and silver. When they break, they become hazardous waste and can only be transported at certain times and along specific routes. The solar industry is working to reduce waste by extending the lifespan of panels, recycling components, and finding alternatives to certain materials. Land use Large solar installations can cover thousands of acres of land that could be used for housing or agriculture. These installations can also alter the landscape, which can impact plants and animals, surface temperatures, and sun exposure. The environmental impact of hydropower electricity generation: Hydropower can harm fish populations, change water temperature and flow, and force people and animals to relocate. Dams and reservoirs can also obstruct fish migration. Some say that exposure to methylmercury from hydroelectric projects can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and neurodevelopmental delays in children. So, while the liberals rant and rave about the carbon footprint of burning fossil fuels in automobiles, using electricity, at the present time, does very little to reduce the overall environmental impact associated with personal, commercial, and military transportation. The technology to produce clean and low cost electricity needs to come first, not the vehicles to be powered by it. It is the old putting the cart before the horse - it doesn't work. Cheap environmentally friendly electrical generation is possible but the obstacles to develop such are immense. The profit governed corporations and those whose wealth depends on these profits, have blocked all technological breakthroughs that threaten the stability of their growing wealth from super-efficient combustion technologies to low-to-no-cost electrical generation. The best current alternative to using fossil fuels for combustion engines is ethanol. Ethanol can be efficiently produced from high-yield rapid-growth plants and other organic materials. While one of the byproducts of burning ethanol is CO2, this can be mitigated to marginalize its environmental impact. The best long-term solution is electricity but the generation, storage, and distribution of it needs to be advanced well beyond what is currently in place for it to reasonably replace the combustion engine.

Hunting public lands on opening day can be like shopping at the mall on Black Friday. Nevertheless, I enjoy spot & stock and ambush hunting for big game. For this, I take the best backpack spotting scope and binoculars I can afford. I enter an area in stages. First, at the longest distance, I use my spotting scope to pick apart the landscape. As I carefully move into my intended area, I use binoculars to see everything, like a sniper moving through enemy territory. If I spook something, I've lost my advantage.
