Welcome to LabMariner! We're Stephanie, Jim, and our three labmaraners: Anubis, Mocha, and Nuala. We enjoy traveling and experiencing the world with our three labmaraners. Recently we did what any other couple with 245 pounds of dog love would do: we bought a sailboat. For 8 months we traveled in the Chesapeake Bay to improve our sailing skills before heading down the East Coast on our way to the Bahamas. Currently, we are sailing the islands of the Bahamas enjoying their crystal clear waters and white sand beaches.

HOW LONG to Raise the Mainsail? || Sailing to and Exploring Harbour Island, Bahamas
How Long Does it Take to Raise Our Mainsail? Sailing to and Exploring Meeks Patch and Harbour Island, Bahamas on our Leopard 45 Sailing Catamaran. Join us as we sail to and explore Meeks Patch and Harbour Island in Eleuthra, Bahamas. We'll be spending 6 months in the Bahamas this year on our Leopard 45 sailing catamaran, LabMariner, with our three labmaraners: Anubis, Mocha, and Nuala. A labmaraner is a cross between a labrador retriever and a weimaraner - and we have one of each color. Firstly, we sail to Meeks Patch where we watch the tourists visit the swimming pigs and officially name our dinghy. Any guesses as to what we name our dinghy? Then, we travel to Harbour Island through the Devil's Backbone where we spend several days exploring the area. Finally, we head to Man Island which makes a good starting point for a dinghy ride to Tay Bay Beach where we visit Preacher's Cave and Sapphire Blue Hole.

The rationalization of sloppy workmanship blows me away. Sure with something that complex you will always have some issues but you paid a huge some of money for the boat and there just doesn't seem to be any sort of proper quality control. The autopilot chain is a classic example of poor workmanship not checked and picked up. The ceiling panels is just bad design with a dodgy fix. You would think these people had never designed and built a boat before and never learned from their own mistakes never mind the mistakes of others. And tht story of the delivery pilot didn't help. If he had a list of issues to check for why didn't the manufacturer know about every one of them and check and fix them before delivery?
actual explanation starts at 13:00
Loved this video. I also have labmaraner. We just figured this out with a dna test. The breeder sold our little guy to us as a chocolate lab. We love him just the same, but it’s very interesting to learn more about this breed.
Reality is simple: it’s a ridiculous industry made out of aproximations In basically everything.
I watch a lot of these posts being a retired Marine Engineer at 79 years. Most of the problems are either poor design and more so a complete lack of manufacturing quality control. Saving on material, labour and selling a vessel that when you leave port its good by Dick, shocking.
Awesome video!! Thank you for the info. We are getting ready to move aboard an old yacht and renovate it, with our 4 dogs. We are planning on trying to train them to use turf, so this was very helpful. Subscribed so I can follow.
"Reality of a new LEOPARD boat" -
Very helpful (and fun!!). Is she a 10 or 11 AL?
I've seen a bunch of these new boat videos recently, and other boat repair videos, and the Q.A. on these boats just suck. They're especially bad with Leopard, it's clear, and may be concentrated on these semi-custom catamaran condos, but failing new engines, software that doesn't work, design mistakes, and even motoring speed being nowhere near advertised, are all unacceptable. Did Catalina, Beneteau, Nauticat, Choy Lee, etc., have these kinds of issues with their production monohulls?
Late to viewing your content. Timeless and yet super relevant. Thanks
Lemon 45. Its like a Airfix Model built by a 8 year old.
If the manufacturer will honor warranty, and pay a licensed repair shop to fix warranted issues, then I would say that when you decide to buy a boat, get your own license as a repair business, then when you fix warranted issues yourself, you can turn it in and get paid for labor. Quality control will go up as labor and parts reimbursement goes up….pay the owners for warranted labor.
Dogs pee on a Cat...😂😂😂😂😂
I'm sorry but these issues are just NOT acceptable! Ceiling panels falling down .... No way is that acceptable from a new product! Blocks installed incorrectly! From z yacht manufacturer! That says it all. It's like Boeing installing a wing upside down and saying Ahh well they'll fix it when they notice it's wrong. Totally unacceptable! We now know Leopard Catamarans are rubbish but they should NEVER have been allowed to get away with such disgusting quality issues.
Would you be happy with half your house painted? I’ve been in the industry. Pride in work, ?
Do you have a name and contact of the delivery captain
You bought a Leopard , one of the worst brand when it comes to problems ans issues , you should have done a bit more research , so enjoy
Got one. Jet black n shiny like a Weimaraner. Slight squarer in the face than lotta labs. 12 yrs old.
Cost Time Quality. You can have any two but not all 3. Wirh respect to quality control, it's very difficult to do properly - and if you are doing it properly, it's expensive and time consuming.
Look at Hallberg Rassy
Liked and subscribed. Really enjoyed this video and how you have put it together. Great job.
9:03 Is this house "Volcano" on Norman's Cay? Was Carlos Lehder Rivas' primary residence there during his late-70's to early-80"s heyday.
Thank you for all the info with the supporting details and diagrams. Much appreciated.
Anyone considering buying a Leopard Cat should check out Travel Sketch! It may just be the boats coming out of R&C South Africa, but there seems to be a lot of problem boats out there!
Best video about this matter so far
Boatsplanning faults that were easily checked and fixed before handing over boat to clients. Similar to buying a new car with faulty brakes but shame it must have been the guy at assembly line with girlfriend issues that may have slipped up together with the hundred other issues some of which maynhave cost you your lives. Almost seems like your willing to pay and fix the faults to help poor R&C. R&C will assume they can continue with their obvious failed QC with nice clients like these.
But why are their show boats working flawlessly ? They know what they are doing. Previous owners letting them get away with it has created this.
Hey guys. In your vid you were saying you didn't put paper in your toilet. I think this is for you or any other mariners with maseraters. Amazon. Sambro ultra slim bidet attachment. $29.99. It fits between the bowl and the seat. I'm sure if necessary you could easily modify it to fit. Probably not necessary. Paper is only needed to dry your clean. Enjoy.
You need to take your ass back where you from and speak on that
You keep saying that they don't build as many as cars and therefore don't do a good job. It's their job. If they can't do it well Leopard should replace them. It's called quality control and I know it's an issue with all boat manufacturers but it shouldn't be. This is what they do. Thank god these guys aren't working in healthcare, people would be dead.
Thank you!! So helpful!
go look at travel sketch
I was wondering after watching other videos on TH-cam about hull issues on Leopards. Have you ever checked or have someone else do it for you for dry spots in the hull ?
Beautiful! I love that you have one of each colour
Dynema is usually used to replace ss cables , not for running rig .
You're incredibly understanding. Certainly boats always require maintenance and issues with the fridges and such are perfectly reasonable, but issues with the strength of the winch base and autopilot are not minor things. Those could be life threatening if it happen in the middle of the ocean.
After hearing all these horror stories of a new boat, I would highly suggest that every single person hire someone to give you a survey of the boat that way before you make it your problem, you have them give you a list to hand to them to fix before you take the boat
Be careful. We have friends whose surveyor missed the fact the boat was infested with termites and was a constructive loss. Over 5 years of legal fighting to get a resolution. One of the things I do during prebuy is google every piece of major equipment to see what issues come up. There is a ton of knowledge in the forums and when I was getting into cruising spent literally hundreds of hours reading forums and books. You, as the buyer are your best advocate. Think about the boat transaction. Every party wants the transaction to happen so everyone gets paid. Surveyors are often recommended by the broker - and guess what: if the surveyor is too "picky", they get in the way of closing the deal and their phone doesn't ring anymore.
Great video! Thanks!
Thought its about maintenance
Hi. Just found your channel. I don’t know if you are still posting. I’m looking to purchase a leopard catamaran. The information in your videos is amazing. It has given me great guidance. Thank you very much.
I am very interested how this works with the dogs..... we have 3 labs as well and we're thinking of a 46 leopard
😍🥰🥰😍😘😘😘

350lb dinghy is riduculous. A dinghy should be light enough that you can lift it with two people. What if it goes aground? Or you have to haul it above the high water mark? And your "problems" of a light dinghy jusy dont seem to have happened for me
What type of boat are you on?
Was this boat Captain delivered or loaded on a ship? Ships can damage the hulls and salon area with the way they load the boat on the deck...
Awesome tips guys… Thanks a bunch:-)!
More cartwheels please!
Cheap production boats are exactly that : cheap. Anyone buying a leopard, Lagoon, Hanse, Beneteau, Dehler, Bavaria etc etc is in for this process. If you buy a much more expensive non-production boat then there will still be issues, there will be less of them and they will be more minor. Production boats suck. And they are getting worse. No boatbuilders were involved in any of this - all the production boats are built by factory workers paid low wages, managed by people under pressure to save time and money. I have been delivering boats for almost 40 years. I have (hopefully!) given up taking production boats across oceans. They just aren't fit for purpose.
Agreed. For example never heard of an autopilot that just runs a chain around the helm. It should be its own pump actuating the steering. Also highlights the important of a shakedown and not just taking delivery and immediately departing for a long cruise
@@morri03chain drive rotary actuators are common. Jefa, for example. I agree that a completely independent system is better, but then in my boat I have two seperate independent autopilots....
These two Marine Professors are super articulate , Me, being a master Mariner FG. I enjoy this sight immensely.
