EASY shop organization with a 3d printer
มุมมอง 66K8 หลายเดือนก่อน
What's the most valuable tool in YOUR shop?? I guess a better title may have been "the most versatile shop tool in my shop" but oh well. I think you get the point. 3D printers are becoming much more approachable these days. They aren't just for nerds printing bust of super heroes or cheap knock off Pokémon anymore (Don't be confused, I'm one of them too). I thought I'd take some time to show so...

Building a bed frame with no plans...
มุมมอง 1.8Kปีที่แล้ว
In this video I will be building a bed frame for my two year old son. He had started to climb out of his crib in the middle of night and start to wander around the house. If he could make me a cup of coffee I probably wouldn't have bothered with making him a new bed BUT he couldn't so it was time for an upgrade. I went to my "local" mill and picked up some Cherry and got to work. I had no plans...
If you are comparing just the extractor vs vac, then the sander itself should be the same across tests. Either use the Festool sander or the Rigid one for both tests. Show me the result of the Rigid Vac + Festool Sander.
I do... I do have the Katz-Moses apron lol
Read a few of the comments and didn't see this mentioned, but the the caps for the Rockler kit will actually fit right onto a bottle of Titebond, so you don't even need to use the funnel or provided bottle if you don't want to.
There are not "thousands" of free designs out there. There are *millions*. My 3D printer has been one of the most useful tools I've ever added to my arsenal. If you're a DIY'er, you *need* a 3D printer. The ability to make a custom plastic part is incredible.
Great video. Thank you!
Hungry? These microplastics are not going to eat themselves!
Nom nom nom!
I've had my Rigid Shop Vac since dinosaurs roamed the earth, and it just keeps on working. I did make the cheap double bucket cyclone filter and added a 12 ft hose to reach different areas of the shop.. Works like a charm. The buckets capture 80%+ of the dust, and I only have to clean the Shop Vac filter occasionally. Yup, it's still loud.
Nice peter! (That's what she said) I still keep mine hanging around. Since making this video I've added a few things to the ol' rigid and I still find a use for it quite often. Mostly jobs I don't want to put my precious overpriced green machine through. Demo work, vacumming standing water, stuff like that and it does just keep on keepin on. Thanks for sharing your experience!
For goodness sake, how many TONS does your saw weigh??
😂 I've never put it on a scale but the internet puts it somewhere in the 400-500 pounds range.
Great video. Just got a 3d printer. Actually, I recently moved it from inside the house to the shop. Similar ideas. Can't wait to make some stuff of the French cleat.
Nice! Glad you enjoyed the video. I'd love to have my printers right in the shop but I think I need a way of keeping the dust down 1st. A little extra space would be nice too.
Great ideas. Make a new video when you have more 3D printed stuff to share. I'm in the process of designing / 3D printing holders for all my stuff. I got a couple videos on my Shorts if you're interested.
The glue roller is for *_large_* glue applications lol and with glue comb, you squirt the glue onto your wood surface and *then* use the comb 👍
Appreciate it! It's funny I felt like I NEVER saw anybody use one of the big glue rollers now my instagram feed is blasted with them being used on big sheet glue ups and I'm like "oh, yeah that makes sense now". 😂
Akshully, no, with a good roller (like from Pfohl), you do not need a comb.
Love the sarcastic comedy. I try to do the same thing, probably unsuccessfully.
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it. I enjoyed your most recent video. Humor and cut aways were great. Honestly, my videos don't really show it (I have A LOT of videos on private) but what I've learned making TH-cam videos for over 13 years...make videos that make you laugh and you enjoy watching and are proud of. Of course play the Thumbnail and Title game the best you can and eventually you'll build an audience that genuinely wants to support you. I'll be watching. 😁

Thank YOU so much for making such great and affordable tools!
"more you spend, less headches you'll probaly enconter"...
Thats what I believe. My 1st printer was an Ender 3. It can produce an awesome print, it may take awhile for it to print AND you will spend A LOT of time dialing it in and maintaining it but it is fairly inexpensive. OR you can spend 600-700 USD and get a Bambu Lab P1S that you just hit "print" and 98% of the time it spits out a perfect print. I think you land somewhere in between with the anycubic Kobra 2 printers. I have 2 and love em.
@@JasonGrissom thanks for answering. I just wanted to say that I loved the phrase and kept it for myself. I bought it for myself. I'm a hobby carpenter, and as printers are more expensive in Brazil, I thought about setting one up. but they convinced me to buy a ready-made one, as it would be my first printer. I bought a Creality Ender 3 S1 Plus five months ago, as it was available within the options, I didn't know about Kobra. I only print in PLA. I had difficulties with the ABS, I didn't know that a closed printer would be better...
Lol. I'm subscribing
Thank you so much. Glad you enjoyed it!
Quick note on the Ridgid shop vac. I bought the 6 gallon one initially but it was useless and had no sucking power for even the smallest things. I returned it and got the 12 gallon one which has been awesome. I use it to clean the car too.
Yeah buddy! Harry’s putty

Plot twist: Jason Hibbs IS lying to you.
😱 I knew it! #exposed
I just saw the shout out in the description! Thanks for the kind words my friend, it’s an honor and a pleasure to know you. May 2024 be the Year of the Grissom! 🚀
Hey no problem Lee. I appreciate all your support and words of encouragement. I gotta put in the work but heres hoping! 🤞
Great project Jason. I was recently asked to make one, so I was hoping to see more of the build. I would contend that buying an inferior drill bit set is a necessity, insofar as it will let you know what size bits you frequently use, then pay the premium for indovidual bits. I have dozens of 1/8" bits for pilot holes, and maybe 5-6 slightly undersized bits (15/64, 23/32, 7/16, etc) as my boring bits. Nonstandard sizes allow for tighting fits, and then I dont have a significant imvestment in items i never use. I will say this, you can never have enough FastCaps. Pretty sure i have 4 lefty/righty, a Yellow metric only, and one of those Black flimsy tapes. I think my FastCap collection is becoming more of an addiction
Thanks Jered! Yeah my plan was to show a lot of the build (I filmed a lot more) but in the edit I couldn't get the pacing right. I think i'll definitely try this style of a video again and have an idea of how to incorporate the "tool talk" and build a lot better. As far as your suggestion about drill bits thats actually a great idea. You obviously don't want to be buying a whole kit everytime your 1/8" bit burns out. I guess really what i'd steer people away from is a set of "general purpose" drill bits. At least in terms of working with wood.
Loved the video Jason ! I love my Pica pencil and did you have a word with my wife coz she bought me a set of machine squares for Christmas 😂
Thanks Steve! I did not. But you know what they say...great minds think alike. 😂
I have one of those pencils and I totally agree that they are a game changer for your workshop and your home.
Thanks for sharing Ewen! I think what your really paying for is your sanity. It's so nice not to be looking all over for your pencil. 😂
I love my fast cap flexible tape. It measures round stuff perfectly.
Great! Another tool I have to buy. Thanks alot. 🤦♂️🤣 just kidding. Kind of...
Well done Jason. I really enjoyed the whole video. The content was brilliant. But, from a yt stand point. The thumbnail was seriously clever, while being simple yet eye-catching. The filming and editing was on point and the whole video was well paced. Im no expert but i know me, i have a habit of getting twitchy around 7 mins into watching anything, very adhd in my viewing. But for all the reasons above i was hooked all the way through. Just one persons view but i hope it shows in the metrics. Loved it.
Hey Mark! Thanks for watching. I was really proud of the thumbnail. I was worried it may be a bit too simple (I have a variation in the pocket that may help if it is) but so far it seems to be doing well. I actually really enjoy photography but rarely get to showcase it in a thumbnail so when this visual came into my mind I knew exactly how I needed to make the video to compliment it. Anyways. I could ramble on about that forever. 😂 But I appreciate your continued support so much. Honestly. Thank you so much. 🙏
Nice editing, like your style of video! You got a new sub 😁
Well thank you very much! 🙏 happy to have you! I try and keep people entertained and hopefully get a few laughs in as well. Some TH-camrs forget that these videos aren't actually free for people...the viewer is paying with the most valuable asset of all, their time. So truthfully. Thank you. 🙏
I just threw away a dull drill bit today. I was scared my house was about to burn down when I was drilling through the garage ceiling into a joist when I started to smell smoke created from the dull bit. Hmmm. Great video. Love the humor. I feel like I need more Grissom in my life.
Oh no! 😬 yeah i'd be a bit freaked out too. Glad everything ended up ok and you trashed the bit. I'm glad you enjoyed the video Logan. Comments like yours are really what keep me motivated! Thank you so much for the continued support and heres to seeing/hearing A LOT more of me this year.
Great video
Thank you Jim! 🙏 Happy to hear you enjoyed it! Hope to keep making more.
You forgot to mention that you can write on the side of the tape measure!
Very true! Good point. Its an under rated feature honestly. It's really nice to have a place to scribble a couple measurements down in a pinch. Thanks for adding this one! 🙏
I've used and like the FastCap tape measures a lot. I stumbled across the Komelon self-locking tape and that is now my first choice. Not because of any of the fancy features of the FastCap, but simply because it comes out locked. You only push the button to retract. Such a simple difference, but MUCH handier to use. No pressing to lock, then unlock to pull out more, then lock again. Who uses a tape measure and doesn't want it to stay put?
Yeah it would be cool to see FastCap implement that feature. Even at the cost of a buck or 2. My 25ft craftsman tape has that and I love it. Especially when I'm marking multiple points along the tape measure at a time. Thanks for sharing another option for people though!
The black rubber outside of my FastCap tape measure also doubles as an eraser, no lie. Give it a try!
🤣 What!? Really?? I gotta go test this...be right back.
@@JasonGrissom so… how’d it work out for you? Also, congrats on your channel! Excited for your content this year. I hope you continue to feel supported and can thrive in the TH-cam ecosystem!!!
@@johntbiv Can confirm! What a crazy hack! TikTok would LOVE that one. I mean heck for 8 bucks its not even that crazy expensive of an eraser. 😂 I'm 100% going to remember that especially since the pica doesn't have an eraser. And thanks for the well wishes John. Much appreciated. This video was a "knocking off the dust" of sorts. Just gotta keep up the momentum! 💪
Happy New Years brother
Thanks Joe! Happy new years too you as well. 🥳
Great video Jason… although I will say that of all the tools you mentioned, in my opinion the only one worth buying is the Fastcap tape.
Thanks Lee! Fair enough. Hey, if we agree on one that's enough for me! 😁
Love my pencil
Thanks Rick! Do you also have a Pica brand pencil or something else? I know there are quite a few that people like out there.
I have the Pica pencil... To me, it has the best lead, hard to break, and I like the fact that I can change the color of the lead when I sam working with a real dark wood so I can see my lines that I draw.. @@JasonGrissom
Nice! Yeah I love mine. I'd like to pick up the Pica Fine Dry for marking more precise marks and use the original dry for shading cut outs and what not. I also saw they just came out with a scriber bit for the dry for metal marking and what not. Wouldn't mind getting one of those too. By the end of it i'll have a couple hundred bucks in pencils. 😂
I did not know about the scriber bit.. I will have to look into this for sure! Thanks!! @@JasonGrissom
No problem! Happy I could help.
A bit of an essay about those pencils - if you dont work in an enviroment where often climb ladders or crawl somewhere, the expensive ones have no benefit. Cheaper pencil might have small and weak pocket clips and they will break if you catch on something, more robust clips like the one on Pica hold fine. Most annoying thing about pica is having to pull out the sheath to sharpen it, most other brand have sharpeners either on the sheath near the clip (meaning you can easily sharpen with one hand)or it screws into the top of the pencil. For my money, the best of the best is Hultafors, but for a shop enviroment a cheapo will do just fine (especially for people like me who use multiple of them for different colors).
Great insight Petr! Thanks for pointing out the weak clip bit for the cheaper ones thats something that always stirred me away from them but you're not wrong. Having the strong clip can be a pain when you need to pull it out to sharpen. I'll have to check out the brand you mentioned. Thanks again for sharing. 🙏 Hope it helps others too!
I 100% agree with you there. These type of mechanical pencils (Pica/Hultafors, etc.) are very good for construction sites imo. but in a shop a "real" mechanical pencil is way better. If you got a 0.9mm pencil and good leads you never have to sharpen them and better leads won't break even if you use them on rougher stuff. Pica has now a "Fine Dry" which uses a 0.9mm lead but the tabs on the sheath always broke on mine which makes them useless.
Hmm...looks like i'm going to have to look into this. At least for marking cut lines. I still really like the shading benefits and marking for sanding with the pica dry. But yeah. Maybe I should look into these options for general marking. 🤷♂️
I’m still laughing at “the point is”, right after you sharpened it. I see what you did there..and love you for it.
🤣. I love that you picked up on that. I thought 1000% it was one of those things I did that NOO ONE was going to notice. Thank you so much Brian. 🙏 Another comment that made it all worth it.
Loved the video! I need to get those drill bits. And the box looked really nice! And hey - thanks for the shout out. Keep the videos coming for 2024
Thanks for watching Pierre! Yeah they're great man. And don't worry about it. Thank you for being there to answer my questions and offer words of encouragement when I need em'!
I would lay it on its side to add the top to the cart.
Good point Dave! I suppose you would just feed the pipe down as far as you could, flip it back up and feed it the rest of the way through? Thanks! Hopefully this helps others. I think another thing I could've done was put clamps under the top to just work as a bit of a shelf/helping hand while I worked it in.
That sandpaper organizer just blew my mind.
Happy I was able to help! Depending on the printer its a pretty quick job too!
Good video Jason - there are some interesting products out there 🤣
Yeah there is!! Some that should probably just not be made. But I guess then what would I make a video about?? 🤷♂️🤣
@@JasonGrissom Totally 😂
Great timing, the Kobra lineup was on sale for Cyber Monday and I was able to grab some gear (used the affiliate link). Now hoping it's as good as you say it is (since I was leaning towards a Bambu). Thanks Jason!
Thanks Joe! Hope you enjoy it as much as I do. It's been a great one for me. Still believe there isnt a better bang for buck out there.
Great video
Thank you! 🙏
Can get a WEN air purifier, RZ Mask, the Ridgid combo, and set up a couple box fans with filters for still not even half of the Festool setup. Fun video, but it's just not a realistic comparison. Like a Chevy Aveo vs. a Ferrari. You'd hope the Ferrari is better. I think the most interesting fact I gleaned from all this is that for the price the festool should've done even better imo.
Fair enough. The Festool is great if you have more money than you know what to do with. 🤣 But seriously. The ridgid with a hepa bag is pretty good. In the Festool defense. There is a lot of things that I didnt really want to dive into either because I didnt have proper eqiupment to scientifically prove or I just didnt want to make an hour long video. It is worth noting with the festool, specifically in this example, you have a larger capacity, you have an anit static anti kink hose and also an outlet to automatically trigger the vacuum with a corded tool. But again. Completely agree with your Ferrari vs Aveo comparison. 🤣
Just now found your channel and am your newest fan. I thank you and am sure my people will also. Happy holidays to you and yours.
Thank you so much! 🙏 Glad you found the channel.
I really enjoyed your approach! Great vid.! I tend to do all of my prototyping and tool making on the mill and lathe, but I have thought about giving a 3D printer a try. Thanks for the info and for coming by my channel!
No problem!! Thanks for providing some good watchin'! 3D printers are quute handy littlw things to have around. I find most of the time my printer is busy making some little jig or whatchamacallit for the house/shop. 😂
