Good Girl Art of Fiction House Comics!
(Episode 67) Let's travel back to the 1940s to review the stories and wonderful women featured in Fiction House Comics. Cartoonist and business man Jerry Iger and artist Will Eisner partnered with pulp editor of Fiction House, Thurman T. Scott to create a comic book line. Featured on the pages were dazzling images of space heroines like Gale Allen and the Girl Squadron; Lyssa, Queen of Mars; Mysta of the Moon; and Futura. The Jungle action genre revealed characters like Sheena, Ann Mason, and the zebra-striped clad Camille. Aviation comics presented agents Jane Martin; Dale and Suicide Smith; Sky Girl; and many more!
Legendary artists included in this video Joe Doolin, George Evans, Lee Elias, Maurice Whitman, Matt Baker, Bob Webb, John Celardo, and Bob Lubbers. Panel by panel these artists delivered stunning artwork month after month.
This episode does not feature Fight Comics' Tiger Girl and Senorita Rio and Ranger Comics' Firegirl and Fantomah. The Time Machine could only handle so much!

I have that wings comic with the Lubbers cover. It’s great. I have some original Lubbers art from robin Malone,x9,and the saint and I think it’s definitely some of the best good girl art I’ve seen. He did a strip called long Sam as well.
Three beautiful purchases! What a great way to start the year!
thanks, great review. I think it worth mentioning more on Leonard Starr, who went on to the "Big Leagues" of newspaper strips On Stage and reviving Little Orphan Annie.
Thanks for this awesome video, greetings from Chile!!!
Kaanga and Anne Mason are based on Ki-Gor and Helene Vaughn who were the stars of the Jungle Stories pulp.. In this case the pulp was better as Ki-Gor and Helene were better written. In the stories, Helene got naked on a regular basis or was forced to shed her leopard skin bikini by bad guys and bad gals. The best of the Ki-Gor stories are great wheras even the best Kaanga story is kind of flat.
Futura was the first female space adventurer. She began as a distaff version of Flash Gordon. You can see the increasing influence of censorship in comics through Futura's costume. In hae first appearances she was clad in next to noting and nudity of ancilary characters was implied. By the time Futura's run in Planet Comics ended, she was clad in a longe demure blue dress, only allowed a bit of leg show. I cannot stress enough how scantily clad Futura was at the beginning, in some panels her clothing appears as little more than a suggestion.
Oh wow, that wood piece is wonderful.
Yes, I was searching for Planet Comics art and this particular store Half Full Designs presented a lot of the wood art!
Wonderful good girl artists in amazingly fun and ridiculous stories. Love them even though i can't afford to get them. Just an occasional reprint.
Thank you for stopping by again! I am lucky I was able to grab a few over the years. But probably no more than for a long time. Thank goodness for reprints out there.
Excellent Video Leo . It's always great to see these Gems . BTW , Who IS the Football Player in that ad ?
Thank you for watching Eric! The football player on the cover of that 1947 Illustrated Football Annual was Texas Longhorn Bobby Lane, who eventually was drafted to the NFL by the Pittsburgh Steelers and had a 15 year career! The Jungle Comics #110 that I showed in the video, I purchased from your colleagues at Comic Book World when they were at FanExpo in Chicago last year!
🤓👍🏼 Now that's HOUSE you satisfy our FICTIONation with GG Art , Leo! Especially that GAL- lure-😘ree of Gingerlicious cards! Let's not overlook the fact that not only did FH present not -the- weaker -sex female protagonist characters but also employed female talent : artists Lily Renee , Fran Hopper , Ruth Atkinson , Marcia Snyder and writer Ruth Roche ( who teamed up with Matt Baker to create the comic strip heroine Flamingo ). If Fiction House heroines were to be faithfully adapted to film these days comparisons to the MSheU would be made by those who probably never read a Fiction House publication. To their surprise they would discover a comic book trend setter where female protagonists dominated. Looking forward to those future travels with more Fiction House GGs!
Greetings Leo! What a great overview of Fiction House and all that wonderful GGA ! So many fantastic artists that never really got their due back in their day and some not even now..Tuska, Elias, Baker, Evans, Doolin.. Those gentleman could show a lot of today's creators how its done. Thanks so much for sharing this amazing part of your collection. Happy New Year !
Fantastic art! Really beautiful. Old comics are the BEST comics.
Glad you enjoyed it. I like showing the older books and art! Happy New Year to you sir!
Something tells me that this video will get a lot of hits from outside your usual base of subscribers! Which is great! Impressive collection of Fiction House comics Leo! These are usually above my budget, among the most expensive Golden Age books not produced by either DC or Marvel. * * * Will Eisner wrote and drew an amazing autobiographical graphic novel you might already know about, called the Dreamer, where he talks a lot about his Iger & Eisner studios days. It was basically a sweatshop, with rows of artists working like in an assembly line, producing pages after pages for some of the lowest pay in comics. Meanwhile, Eisner and Iger made a LOT of money packaging material for not only Fiction House, but also Fox and Quality Comics. In The Dreamer, Eisner talks about Jack Kirby, George Tuska , Bob Powell, and Lou Fine, but none of the other names you mention like Lee Elias, George Evans (great airplane artist), Matt Baker, or Joe Doolin. You would think that at least Matt Baker, a great artists, and one of the rare black man in comics at the time, would warrant a mention. I suspect that maybe these guys joined Iger's Studios after Eisner quit to start his Spirit comics strip? * * * I am jealous of your Nuka Cola tin sign as Fallout is my favorite video game franchise of all time.
Fiction House probably had the most GGA of any publisher. Thurmond would often send artwork back to the artist for revisions sighting that the artwork needed to be more sexualized. More headlights and cleavage. Great Planet Comics and study into their interiors.
Great walk-thru and fantastic looking show Leo! And you picked up some absolute GEMS 🤩 I thought I recognized that dealer and when you said Comic Interlude that’s when I knew! I’ve been going to his store for a few decades now . I was filing some GK comics the other night and came across the Black Hole series . Wasn’t aware of issue#4 ! 😮 Going on my list now ! Love all the golden/silver/ Bronze Age goodness and a big fan of the DC 80 page $1 editions.. and of course, you have to have Archie! Thank you for sharing my friend 😊
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to both of you gentlemen! 🎄🎉🎈 Another wonderful entry to the Lunch and Comics collection! Love seeing the BLB’s and all the different comic companies represented.. A treat to see all the Archie and Harvey books, and All-Star #58 was and remains a childhood favorite of mine . Thank you so much for the end of video shout out, and very sorry to hear that Mrs Strangelife is in the hospital. Sending prayers and positive vibes her way for healing and quick recovery 🙏🙏🙏❤️🩹 Thank you Leo and Hans for doing these videos. Take care 😊
Great Stuff! Merry X-Mas !! :)
Merry Christmas to you too and thank you for watching!
I need to stop back by to see this, but wanted to wish a Merry Christmas & a safe and Happy New Year to you and yours! ~Eric
I hope that you had a Merry Christmas and to a Happy New Year ahead, Eric! Thanks for watching. If you are in the area it a nice, quaint little diner!
@@timetravelcomics That sounds good to me. I will keep that in mind.
Hello Leo, I hope you might provide some inside looks at these UFO books. The covers are definitely fantastic and a joy to see…perhaps in early 2025 there will be time to show some inside art.
I am always glad when people enjoy the covers, I agree! I will be showing the inside pages of these in the future as I have a bunch of new sci-fi books. Also, check my playlist for the video "UFOs in Comics" for some Gold Key and Dell greats!
It's 16 degrees here in NYC on a Sunday night and i'm watching this video i'm there in spirit !
We have a chair pulled out for you! The waitress is coming around. Stay warm and a Happy New Year to you sir!
🎄⛄Leo & well wishes for The Captain 🎅 & his 🤶Wife . This Lunching & Comics thumbnail certainly caught my A10tion ! What a HAULiday stocking filler The Captain shared! 🤗Big Little Books and two of my favorite 60s shows - The Invaders and Tarzan! What a WINGderful Ginger GG cover from Fiction House. Stay safe and DRONEt forget to look up whenever you go anywhere!
I figured that you would like that Wings cover, Anthony. Now I need to pick up a Fiction House Firehair and then we'll be takin'! I loved what you did there with "a10tion" for the 10th installment of Lunch & Comics! Thank you for your support this year and always. Have a prosperous and happy New Year!
Merry Christmas Leo and Hans! I hope you and yours have a great Christmas! I also hope your bride gets well soon Captain. I think we’re all looking forward to a wonderful comic year in 2025!
Thank you Greg- we hope that you had a pleasant Christmas and to a happy and prosperous New Year ahead! More comics in 2025! We are praying for the Captain's wife's speedy recovery.
Blondie's looks so cool. I love these lunchtime comics videos.
Blondie's is a cool, little diner that's been around for a while! We hope to make more Lunch & Comics videos when we can! Thank you for watching as always and a happy New Year to you!
A good meal, good books, and great company! That's Chistmas magic right there! Merry Christmas guys and happy holidays!
Thank you Ranger Sly! We like to get into the theme of Christmas! Thank you for watching us all year long- and a Happy New Year to you!
These are cool. I actually have the first and third one but have never looked inside of them! Thanks for sharing the interiors!
The way you describe the pages of each comic is just wonderful. I'm really enjoying your series. This happened to pop up & I'm so glad I clicked on it. I could watch you describe old comics all night. My favorite comic in the 80s was West Coast Avengers. I also really liked sinister syndicate & Beyonder. God bless.
Thank you for your most kind words Jason! I appreciate it very much. I find that older comics are special, both in story and art- and I hope to preserve and document it as much as I can. The final 1980s comic installation will be coming soon!
Cool pic ups. Good prices Love the house of mystery woman sleeping cover. Ps new subscriber
Thank you very much for watching and subscribing! I appreciate your comment and look forward to showing more comics. The House of Mystery series and the sci-fi covers are a lot of fun!
I'm a huge Rocketeer fan, as well as Mike Grell and Starslayer!
When I revisited Mike Grell's art, it is truly amazing what he did! The Rocketeer was a stunning movie to watch and I remember watching it at the theater with my Boy Scout troop back in the day.
I really appreciate your channel. Very fun stuff!
Thank you for always tuning in! I appreciate it! I love showing older books!
That is some great sci fi comic book covers
The colors and title art is very fun! Thanks for stopping bye!
That $7 price for the Mystery in Space TPB?! Awesome! And small cons ARE the best!
The Mystery in Space TPB intrigued me and I had to get it! Thank you for watching! I am always glad when I see small cons advertised.
Happy Comics are Fun comics! Marvel Feature was another fun series from the bronze. Star Comics getting more popular. Gold Keys, Dell, DC and Marvel: A wonderful variety haul Leo!
Some interesting comics in the bunch. I try to pick up painted covers when I can! Thank you for watching!
TY LIKED AND SUBBED!
Thank you Chris! I am glad that you subbed! And thank you for watching, I appreciate it!
Great vid Leo! Like you, I really enjoy these smaller cons and it’s good to see these independent creators and all the cool books and art they have. Fantastic pickups from there and your local shop! Love all the GK stuff and those gorgeous painted covers by George Wilson. Am a big fan of the Pacific Comics line and always get them when I can. Have never seen that Mystery in Space trade but it’s definitely on my list now. Silver age Action Comics for $3 ? Yes please! 😊 Thanks for sharing my friend!
Thank you for watching Shannon! The Mystery in Space trade book captures some nice Adam Strange stories. I was surprised at what I came across! I never go into these cons with the comics that I found in mind!
Another great con haul TTC! Nice selection from all the ages, Golden, Silver, Bronze, Copper, Modern! I've never seen or even heard of Happy Comics! Must be scarce! * * * I'm not a fan of Red Sonja per se, but like you, I love Frank Thorne's art on his run of the fiery warrior. I think I'm missing only one last issue by Thorne to complete. * * * Thunder Cats came out a little too late for me to get hooked, but regarding the scarcity of the issues, I think it is the whole Marvel/ Star Comics line that are scarce to find. Especially the later issues in any series, and even more so for popular licensed characters. * * * From Tom Corbett Space Cadet to Starslayer, with Twilight Zone, Star Trek, and Star Wars in between, your well known love of classic science fiction was well represented in this haul. Good of you to share this love of sci-fi by supporting local artist like the creators of Evolution. * * * I bought that Mystery in Space TPB collection when it first came out and I love it so much! It has a very nice selection of good old vintage DC sci-fi with all the classic features represented (Adam Strange, Space Cabbie, etc.) and even some more obscure ones. All the great artists are represented too: Frazetta, Kirby, Kane, Infantino, Anderson, etc. It is just too bad that the DC Pulp Fiction Library only published that single volume. I was really hoping to see more. Maybe a romance volume, a western one, more sci-fi, etc.
I am always surprised what I find at cons- sometimes books that I have never seen or books that are over or under priced! I just learned about the Pulp Fiction Library and, I agree, there should have been more as they nicely reprint back issues. Thank you for watching as always and as you know- I love my sci-fi and space tales. Thank you for your comments always!
I’ll have to watch later this week. Just not feeling to good right now buddy.
No problem Cap! I hope you feel better.
I'm trying for the whole run. It gets a little confusing since they reprinted issues from the 1960's later in the '70's. My favorite UFO series is the Gold Key you're featuring! Nice short.
Absolutely Michael, it can get confusing as there are price and Whitman variants! The painted covers are very fun and Dell and Gold Key did it best in my opinions. Thanks for watching!
Oh great short Leo! Love space/UFO
Thank you Cap!
Love those books. I have so few of what you showed. Great title and a great subject.
Thank you Bizarrebraincomics! These are a gem of a series!
Hey Leo.. What a fun looking con! As I’ve said before, these smaller shows are always the best with the best people.. And what a great variety! Love everything you showed.. Great scifi and UFO books.. I have a special fondness for the DC 100 pagers. Charltons are a favorite along Tippy Teen and the romance books. Thanks for bringing us along and sharing my friend 😊
Thank you for watching Shannon! I agree, the smaller cons are more fun and the deals aplenty! They pop up every now and then and I try an make the most of them!
Greetings Leo! From the footage and the wonderful books you showed it looks like a great time was had at the Pulp and Paper Con! You’re really getting me interested in the old sci-fi pulps.. The covers and stories look outstanding . Very nice pick up on the Planet Stories with the G. Fox tale inside! Huge fan of the Archie and any old sci-fi comics. Well done my friend! Hope you and your family are well. Take care😊
Hey Shannon, thank you for watching. I typically collect comic books and sometimes running into pulp painted covers is mesmerizing! They are harder to store because they are thicker books and the paper is so poor and brittle, it is risky reading them. Gardner Fox deserves his own spotlight as he ushered in pulp stories into the pages of comics, especially with his DC works. Carmine Infantino and Sid Greene would draw out his stories. All is well, thank you for asking.
I love seeing these. You sent me down another rabbit hole as now I'm actively looking for golden age soda shoppe covers!
Oh no! What have I done! Those soda shoppe covers are just so charming, right?
fantastic show. don't know about those glasses though.... Heman, Turtles, Thundercats.
All 80s goodness- He-Man, Turtles, and ThunderCats! Thank you for watching Luke! Nothing like neon glasses to read comics with!
Peter is Hackerman from Kung Fury, hacking through time. But those handy-dandy watches are much more reliable for control than the Nintendo Powerglove.
I just watched Kung Fury, as I have not seen or heard about this film. Very entertaining indeed- and a Powerglove referenced and used! I can definitely see Peter as Hackerman now! Thank you for watching and informing me about the Kung Fury, now I am a fan!
Love that series! You were so right in devoting a whole episode on that single year of 1986. This was a BIG year, if only for Watchmen and Dark Knight that sadly heralded the whole grim and gritty style that would dominate comics in the 90's. * * * Beside Dark Horse, 1986 also saw the birth of many other smaller independant publishers such as Gladstone Comics (my favorite source for Disney comics), Slave Labor Graphics (maybe my favorite b&w indie publisher), Eternity Comics, Malibu Comics (important for it's link with Image Comics birth), and many other. * * * Before the Man of Steel, the Legends mini-series would begin to set up the post-Crisis DC and introduce John Byrne into the DC universe. * * * As you demonstrated, 1986 was a busy year for Frank Miller as he not only did the Dark Knight and Elektra: Assassin mini-series, but also returned to Daredevil for the celebrated run of the ''Born Again'' storyline in DD # 227 to 233 with David Mazzucchelli on art. * * * The first volume of Art Spiegelman's Maus (that would later win a Pulitzer) also came out in 1986. * * * The year was also terrible with a devastating famine in Africa. This would lead Jim Starlin and Berni Wrightson to spearhead the Heroes Against Hunger benefit one-shot published by DC. Almost every one in mainstream comics contributed including Jack Kirby, Carmine Infantino, Joe Kubert, Barry Windsor Smith, Marshall Rogers, Walt Simonson, Curt Swan, and many, many others.
Thank you Ranger Sly! It was a big year, overwhelming to say the least, with so many #1 issues and great artist contributing that year. My time machine must have overheated in Chronos' hands as I left out 'Nam #1 and Heroes Against Hunger, Maus, and a few other. Maus I read in school in 1996 and remember it being special and the first graphic novel that I ever read. I have my original copy and will show in 1987... More indie titles to come- Zot! and some odd ball ones! Thank you for message and your extension of knowledge always! I always look for your comments and they are appreciated.
@@timetravelcomics How could I forgot Zot!? One of my favorites, maybe the most underappreciated and well-written gem in the whole b&w boom of the 80's. Big year indeed!
You forgot to mention the Nam with that iconic Michael Golden artwork. I was in 7th grade in 86 and that issue #1 was hot shit!.also the punisher limited series was too! Other than that great video!!!!🤘
Ah! I did forget to mention the 'Nam and the Punisher! I do have a book to show for 1987, coming soon. I also forgot to mention the Heroes Against Hunger comic from DC from that year too! Micheal Golden did so many great covers in the 80s. Thank you for your reminders and comments and for sticking around during the show Joshua!
Gumby and pokey yes!! One redeeming quality but I think someone or something sabotaged your Time Machine!🤣
Oh good lord!! I’m never going back to 1986! You destroyed my beautiful memories of that year forever I say! 😂🤣
Gumby and Pokey! One redeeming quality!! BTW Did someone sabotage your Time Machine?
First one here 1986 what a great year to travel back to how you doing brother this was when the crisis was ending and DC comics was going to the one universe which set the stage for some of the best stories ever and their presently doing that right now they just got rid of the multiverse which is a joke I hate the multiverse but that's a side story but yeah 86 is an awesome year for us to travel back to
You are the first to comment! And I very much appreciate it! I hope you are doing well as fall season is here. The year 1986 had a lot going on, and like you said with multiverses changing back to one universe. Thank you for watching and commenting as always!
Shogun by far.
Always a great vote Mr. Root!
