More of Strasburg 90 on the First Trips of 2022
Come along as we watch Strasburg's Baldwin 2-10-0 Number 90 go on it's first run of 2022!
Please note: This video was not filmed using the quality settings I normally use. I had my camera's quality turned down by mistake. I had been filming for about half the day when I realized my mistake (whoops!) The rest of the day I filmed in my normal 4K 60FPS setting. Very cool. I remember as a child, back in the late 60's my dad showed me a very old wooden trestle that was presumably along the MA & PA ...my dad and I spent many years as steam railfans travelling to historic steam railroads on the east coast. And then all across the US. I have always wondered if any of the dozens of MA&PA trestles and bridges still remain. The historical book that was done on the MA & PA shows many photos of MA & PA steam trains and doodlebugs crossing various trestles. I believe we were somewhere in the area just south of York, possibly near the edge of Dallastown or we may have been in Red Lion. I have relatives in that area and my dad grew up in York & Dallastown so he enjoyed digging up this historical site from his youth. When he boarded a train and went off to war in WWII I think his train took him and the other recruits out of Dallastown on the MA & PA. After researching, I think it was the Yoe Trestle, which is near Red Lion..... I actually found a 2018 TH-cam Video of the YOE Trestle along the MA & PA. I am amazed that the Yoe Trestle is still standing.... Now, what, 120 years old?

    1:29 i love how it says "private property" even though Amtrak is funded which tax payer money. Therefore its publicly owned. Its like having someone physically trespassed from a Post Office. its publicly owned property. They really should increase service on the line.

    MG was closed as a continuous Block, Interlocking, and Train Order Station in November 1978. However, it was kept in operating condition until the completion of the CTC project in the mid-1990s. Around fifty days a year, usually during maintenance season, the tower would be reopened to provide operating flexibility when tracks were taken out of service for work. The last reopening was probably during the Gallitzin Tunnel realignment. The area was kept secure until not too long ago, so that helped keep things in good shape. I always thought it interesting that PRR build such a beautiful brick structure in the middle of nowhere (and the middle of WWII) when a simple concrete block building would have done the job just as well. I guess bricks and bricklayers weren't "strategic assets" according to the War Production Board.

      @B-and-O-Operator-Fairmont ปีที่แล้ว

      Conrail was the one who closed AR in 1995. I heard part of what doomed Alto was that trains were getting too long to attach helpers there. In any event, NS wanted to cut a few jobs.

    • @b3j8
      @b3j8 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@B-and-O-Operator-Fairmont Ok thanks. Anyway it's too bad both Conpanies had more interest in Shareholder return than a small nod to history. Wouldn't hurt them one bit.

    • @B-and-O-Operator-Fairmont
      @B-and-O-Operator-Fairmont ปีที่แล้ว

      @@b3j8 I could understand (if not like) why towers were closed in favor of CTC out on the mainline. What never made sense to me was why "terminal" towers such as ALTO were closed in favor of a remote dispatcher. And I am sure the Allegheny Dispatcher has plenty to do without letting a yard engine get through WORKS or HOMER for the tenth time this shift. It all comes down to job cuts.

    • @b3j8
      @b3j8 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@B-and-O-Operator-Fairmont Yep, just to save a buck. However I believe we may see things change here more in favor of the shipper than Wall Street in the near future. Time will tell I guess.

    • @B-and-O-Operator-Fairmont
      @B-and-O-Operator-Fairmont หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@b3j8 Perhaps a little late, but I should point out that every tower required a minimum of five operators to staff it: First Trick, Second Trick, Third Trick, Relief Operator (covered the others' days off except for usually one of the Third Trick shifts) and at least one Extra Operator to cover that one shift plus other vacation and sick days. Most boards back in the day had multiple extra operators to work around the division to keep things covered. It gets a little more involved than just saving a buck.

    Seems like I remember reading something about a wye existing in the Delta area. Those foundation blocks appear to curve in the opposite direction as the trestle to form the other leg of the wye. I was up in Delta back in 1970 and walked around to the trestle from where the old Delta station had been. I have a few photos I took back then. The track was still being regularly used and went south as far as Whiteford. There was a turntable in Delta as well although didn't appear it had been used for years.
