Sutra "The Four Noble Truths": Noble Truth of the Origin of Suffering - Kinh "Tứ Diệu Đế": Tập Đế
12/07/2024 We are still learning the second Noble Truth: The Noble Truth of the Origin of Suffering. Of the many things related to this topic that can be learned, the two most important things for us to learn are afflictions and karma (our actions through body, speech, and mind are led by the afflictions.)
As mentioned before, afflictions can be divided into 2 kinds: “root” afflictions and “secondary” afflictions. “Root” afflictions are those that are able to create conditions for other afflictions to occur. During this Dharma Talk, Khensur Rinpoche listed 6 types of “root” afflictions: attachment (འདོད་ཆགས། dö chag), anger or hatred (ཁོང་ཁྲོ། khong dro), arrogance or negative pride (ང་རྒྱལ། nga gyäl), ignorance (མ་རིག་པ། ma rig pa), afflicted doubt (ཐེ་་ཚོམ་སྙོན་མོངས་ཅན། the tsom nyön mong chän), and afflicted view (ལྟ་བ་སྙོན་མོངས་ཅན། ta wa nyön mong chän). Khensur Rinpoche clarified that there are two kinds of doubts -- those which are afflicted, and those which are not. In addition, there are also two views: right view and afflicted view.
Following this, Khensur Rinpoche quoted a line in Abhidharma to describe ”attachment”, the first of the six “root” afflictions:
Attachment to (the things and events in) the Three Realms.
Here, the "Three Realms" are the Desire Realm, Form Realm, and Formless Realm. Currently, all of us are in the Desire Realm. In the Desire Realm, due to having 5 sense consciousnesses and mental consciousness, whenever encountering worldly objects or spiritual objects, we are attached. Our minds grasp onto these things and events and cannot let go, wanting more (for example: shape and color, nice sound, nice smell, taste, textile, position, status etc.). Khensur Rinpoche compared them to glue which is very sticky. This is the gross level of attachment.
A deeper form of attachment is our attachment to our own samsaric life - a life which is the product of afflictions and unwholesome karma. Still, we want to hold on to it. This counts as 1 of the 6 ”root” afflictions, not the gross attachments mentioned earlier that we as Buddhist practitioners can try to deal with and keep our distance from.
Khensur Rinpoche then explained briefly the 3 cravings, also known as the 3 attachments, which the Buddha listed in the scripture: craving for sensual pleasure, craving for existence, and craving for extermination.
Trong buổi Pháp Thoại này, thầy Khensur Rinpoche đã liệt kê 6 loại phiền não “cội rễ”: tham hay dính mắc (འདོད་ཆགས། dö chag), sân hay ghét bỏ (ཁོང་ཁྲོ། khong dro), kiêu mạn hay hãnh diện một cách tiêu cực (ང་རྒྱལ། nga gyäl), vô minh (མ་རིག་པ། ma rig pa), nghi ngờ vốn liên quan đến phiền não (ཐེ་་ཚོམ་སྙོན་མོངས་ཅན། the tsom nyön mong chän), và tà kiến (ལྟ་བ་སྙོན་མོངས་ཅན། ta wa nyön mong chän).

Afflictions which are related to the Noble Truth of the Origin of Suffering are defined as “certain mental states arising in our own mental continuum that make our general mind “unclear.” In order for us to understand these afflictions, Khensur Rinpoche gave two examples over two consecutive Saturdays to illustrate afflictions. One example is the current “foggy” and “overcast” weather in Dharam...

However, for many of us, we just say these things the actual actions we take to achieve them do ...

His Eminence Khensur Rinpoche Tashi Tsering has the ability to open up the heart of the disciple, to peel off another veil of ignorance of the disciple’s mind, and to inspire the disciple with a new source of positive energy which turned the disciple’s mind to virtues, focus, contemplation, and sheer wisdom of awareness.
