Tackling the tunnels of Tröllaskagi
If you’re planning a road trip around Iceland, you might have heard a few things about single-lane tunnels and bridges.
Don’t worry - they’re perfectly safe and easy to use, so long as you’re prepared!
Here’s what it looks like when you take a trip through one of the single-lane tunnels on the Tröllaskagi peninsula in North Iceland.
Heading away from Akureyri, Route 82 winds its way north past Dalvík towards Ólafsfjörður via a single-lane 3.4-kilometre tunnel called Múlagöng.
The rule here is simple.
If you're travelling north, you must pull in and give priority to southbound traffic.
If you’re travelling south, you have the right of way.
As you can see, there are frequent recesses for you to use, marked with an illuminated M.
Time codes:
1 minute 55 seconds: pulling over to stop in a recess to allow southbound traffic to pass. I used my indicator to help any following vehicles prepare to do the same.
2 minutes and 35 seconds: aborting a similar stop as there was more time to reach the next recess.
2 minutes and 45 seconds: pulling in at the next available recess.
4 minutes and 45 seconds: obeying a stop sign towards the end of the tunnel, which controls access around a curve (no line of sight).
There are two further road tunnels from Ólafsfjörður to Siglufjörður, jointly called Héðinsfjarðargöng.
Both are two-lane tracks, so there's no need to pull over. These tunnels run for 7.1 kilometres and 3.9 kilometres, and there are recesses too.
Strákagöng lies at the northern tip of the peninsula, north of Siglufjörður.
It's quite short (800 m, 2,625 ft), but it is another single-lane tunnel, and it curves slightly too.
So be prepared to give way to southbound traffic and reduce your speed as you approach its northern end.
It was Iceland's second road tunnel, opened in 1967, and it offered Siglo's townspeople all-year-round connections. Previously, winter trips had to be completed by boat!
If in doubt, pull over safely in the recesses and let southbound traffic pass before you proceed.
Thanks to my steady-handed camera person Roma Goodge Tastic!

Six Days To Santiago: Walking the Camiño Inglés
มุมมอง 14K2 ปีที่แล้ว
This is the story of a week walking the Camiño Inglés from Ferrol to Santiago de Compostela in April 2022. It was my third Camino, the shortest and the least populated, as the Camino recovers from two years of Covid and many other unwanted distractions. But just like the other routes I have walked, it taught me many lessons and gave me peace, calmness and serenity, with gorgeous Galician landsc...
The European Odyssey - Sarajevo

Two days in Sarajevo, where East meets West in a melting pot of cultures, and where the scars of a brutal internecine conflict can still be seen around every corner. A sombre stop on my 2019 summer odyssey around Europe, Sarajevo has risen from the ashes of a terrible siege and more than three years of relentless shelling. It’s barely believable that a city could host an Olympics in 1984 and li...

The Divers of Mostar

After a long coach journey from Dubrovnik, which included three separate passport checks, I found myself in Mostar, a place best known for a splendid 16th-century arched bridge built by Suleyman the Magnificent. Destroyed in the bitter civil war of the mid-90s, and beautifully rebuilt now, Stari Most is a symbol of the divide that remains in this community. By some accounts, only tourists pass ...

Moving down the Adriatic coast from Zadar took me to Split, the second-largest city in Croatia. The highlight of this Dalmatian metropolis is Diocletian's Palace, a well-preserved Roman palazzo, with towering colonnades and marbled streets, making it a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a modern-day dream setting for film and TV series such as "Game of Thrones". Split hums with a vibrant nightlife ...
The European Train Odyssey - Zagreb and Zadar, the gateway to the Adriatic

Moving south from Budapest to the Adriatic Coast required a westward diversion to Zagreb, the capital of Croatia for an overnight stay, before catching a coach south and east to Zadar, one of the oldest cities in the region. Zagreb proved to be a stately and attractive place, filled with Austro-Hungarian edifices and Tito-era socialist structures too, while Zadar was an entertaining gateway to ...

Arriving by train overnight from Kraków, Budapest offered me four days of Magyar majesty. A bustling metropolis dripping with centuries of history, straddling the wide Danube, Buda and Pest is filled with eclectic, baroque, neo-Gothic and neo-classical edifices, dominated by the medieval Royal Palace on one side and the enormous Parliament on the other. As well as those architectural highlights...

Taking another funky train from Warsaw deeper into the heart of Poland, I’d come to explore the gorgeous city of Kraków (it’s actually pronounced Krak-oof - who knew?) and take in some of its highlights. The first stage of my European Train Odyssey had brought me to Warsaw, the capital of Poland. Great tutorial. One small addition to travelers judgement: The tunnel predates the common use of long trailers and trucks, so it is advisable to give way to such a large and long vehicle regardless of the direction driven.

Glad you enjoyed it, Jean! Nine Caminos? I’m on two - I’ve got some walking to be done!

Thank you for your beautiful and peaceful presentation. I did my first Camino in May of 2018, and your video brought back so many emotions. You took me right back. Thanks and Buen Camino!

Thanks Dan - that's very kind of you. There are more Camino films on my channel, including the Portugués.
