Gears of war the original online coop. Maddens with me mates in the early 90s , the last of us . I remember waiting for my street fighter to be delivered for my snes with the adapter as it was coming from the US. More recently world of Warcraft with Balidorf and our guildies.
Awesome! I played a lot of Gears of War co-op! Street Figter is a classic and getting to play it first time on console sounds sweet. Wow of Course with you guys is great!
Transport Tycoon Deluxe and Sim City 2000 are ones i keep going back to. No play through is ever the same.
Both of these are brilliant. I would happily play either of those right now! :)
Great review sir !!
Thank you! :)
Great video Mr Bali, the legend of Zelda windwaker is one i always go back to 😀 x
Thank you! And a good choice! :)
I love the old PC games like Duke Nukem 3D and Red Alert. Also, the old Megadrive ones like Flashback and Streets of Rage 2. They spend too long worrying about photo realistic water and not long enough worrying about fighting street punks with broken bottles.
I most definitly agree! There should be more street punk beating going on. Red Alert is a good choice. The FMV and the classic music sticks in the memory :)
Skyrim, Half-Life 2. And I recently got a Nintendo Switch and have started playing through the original Super Mario World again, although I’ve forgotten where all the secret levels are and refuse to cheat by looking on t’internet 😂
Those are some great choices. Super Mario world, man. That is defintly an all time classic. I put so many hours into the back in the day! :)
I have spent a huge amount of time playing Civilisation IV! I have also returned to FTL and Darkest Dungeon over and over again, they're so good.
I need to play Civ again. Been a long time. FTL is great! Darkest Dungeon is a good choice too :)
I have a few special games that are a pure escape for me but if I had to choose 1 it would be The Witcher 3. Closely followed by RDR2. I think I'm on my sixth play through of Witcher 3 as I've played it on multiple platforms. There's still new missions I haven't played yet on the next Gen version!
The Witcher 3 is a mammoth game, a real landmark title that showed the potential for RPGs. I will also need to give RDR2 a look at some point!
@balidorf8573 RDR2 has the most realistic world I've ever played. The way the npc's and wildlife react is incredible. It broke most games for me for a long time afterwards. If the Witcher 4 has the realism of RDR2 then I'll never leave the house again!
@@noahwinterbourn1476 It is crazy how they have got things now in terms of realisim. I think the next witcher game is going to be something special. Hopefully not mired in controversy like Cyberpunk though!
I think MMOs are an ideal genre for the type of game you're talking about. You have a fleshed out alternate universe where you can pop in and essentially do what you wish be it stroll around, find harder content to take your mind off of something or just hang out with people. Being around others with a shared interest, it can be really soothing when you're hurting. My MMO of choice is GW2 but to be honest pick one, they all do a wonderful job of resetting your mind ready for the next real life day.
Yeah, I agree. MMOs definitely suit the idea of a special game. And you are right, It could be any of them. You build those memories of playing them, often with others who share the experience.
For me, I don't really focus on one game - although there are definitely games I consider my favorites, Planescape: Torment is typically what I go for when asked specifically. Instead what gets me going is the music - music in games brings back a lot of memories for me and reminds me of times where I didn't have the worries of work/life/etc. Sometimes I'll just run the music for older games sparking those memories and nostalgia. For me the best period is the "tracker" music of the Amiga days - music from people like Alister Brimble, Chris Hulsbeck, Bjorn Lynne, etc really get me going. Tracks that I keep coming back to are: Grand Monster Slam OST (th-cam.com/video/02D7yWoAx68/w-d-xo.html), Turrican 2 - The Great Bath (th-cam.com/video/6h6xl-z5j88/w-d-xo.html), D-Generation - Building Peace Through Better Weapons (music.th-cam.com/video/bakbLmn_uQU/w-d-xo.html&si=S7sR4LxaaJAwnzdo), and a weird one Kult (known as Chamber of the SciMutant Priestess in the UK) (th-cam.com/video/SKtPiX7y2dc/w-d-xo.html)
I completely understand your point here. Music really can have a strong impact on game memories. And those are some good tunes. Grand Monster Slam, that awakened a lost memory of that game!
I recently got back to Botanicula on some day on which I wasn't feeling good and just meandering around and getting nothing done. And half an hour later I was in a good mood. Proteus is a game that has had a similar effect on me. I think it partially has something to do with their simplicity. But I don't really have the kind of comfort games that I come back to regularly. It's more occasional replays. Mostly because otherwise I would never finish any games I haven't already played through.
I am glad the game helped you with your mood, it looks like quite a unqiue game. I know what you mean about not finishing other games. So many to play!
@@balidorf8573 Amanita are a fairly unique company. They apparently draw some of their inspiration from old animated movies and such. Like Hedgehog in the Fog for instance.
Excellent video as usual.
Thank you! :)
Has to be Star Wars Galaxies for me.
I wish I had played it!
My special game is LOTRO. I've been playing it since launch and I'll be playing it until the end.
LOTRO is a great game. Mighty Dwarves!
Legend of Zelda ocarina of time or majora's mask ❤ although rift if it was possible to go back 😢 the game but just as much the people
Some classic ones there. Memories of other people too are strong :)
They need to release the code for Rift so private servers can pop up
Star Wars Battlefront 2 (2005) and GTA V I return to
Battlefront originals were great!
Diablo 2 (Both Original and HD), Banjo-Kazooie & Fallout 2 are games I return to over and over.
Some Good Choices!
Don’t see much point being cynical. There are good and bad developers. Fairly easy to find the good ones who are committed to their games with regular monthly updates and fixes. I stick with those, and some are big companies as well.
There are some good ones out there for sure and as you say some of the big ones do do right by the player. There more nefarious publishers and such to be aware of though :)
Well said. I'm old enough to remember when we collectively clutched our pearls at Oblivion's horse armour. Yet, I wouldn't call myself cynical. There ARE good games out there, if you know where to look and what to avoid. Being able to make this distinction doesn't make one cynical. Rather I'd say it makes one a discerning gamer. That is also an important distinction.
You have a good point here. I agree it is wise to distinguish between and find the video games that we enjoy out there. Thanks for the comment! :)
A lot of people don't like it, but the fault is ours. You can't make games no one is willing to buy and stay in business for long. I get the whole unwilling to take a risk on something new and creative criticism. It's the same criticism of the music industry, but `why` does that exist? Why is a rehashed formula used over and over again, less of a risk than trying something new? Because we're willing to buy it.
You are right about this. I guess that is the call we can make, to try and show our fellow gamers that videogames don't need to be a certain way for them to still be fun. People will just buy what they want in the end.
Wise words Balidorf. I am not feeling very articulate of late so I will you wish a happy Christmas and thank you for the video. take care friend. Best game i played the past year was Svarog's dream btw.
Thank you for the kind words and Merry Christmas! Svarog's Dream - great game!
For me, Being cynical is a byproduct of the industry going from a "hobby" & "passion" based thing to a "business" based industry, We can see that the triple A companies with publishers are focused on profits where they pass on Sure fire wins due to them being out of the norm. Most of the large gaming companies and publishers live off of Goodwill from when the companies was passionate and gamer focused, but that does not give the top brass the dividends they want. Currently I will not purchase any AAA games until they are below 10£, They are not good enough to spend the money on. I will also fight you regarding the physical media, IT WILL NEVER LEAVE, you will however be in the minority if you want it in the current day, Just look at the "limited physical game" publishers and companies like Blaze that make the Evercade hardware & license the games and put on cartridges. I am however depressed about the state of most of gaming since publishers and developers promise the moon and stars and deliver shite, They have lost all goodwill and lost my interest. Other than that, I hope that we will get a renaissance in the AAA developer space, otherwise the Indie games will take their place and these behemoths will go the way of the dodo. Have a good one Bali & Happy New Year.
You make some good points. You are right, there is still a demand out there for physical versions of games along with all of the vintage stuff people collect. It definitly has shifted from a more passion focused bunch of nerds listening to Metal while creating DOOM to not so savoury types perhaps producing work that is cynical in of itself. There is hope though and there are some great companies out there still, doing some great stuff. Happy New Year to you too! and thanks for the comments! :)
idk man your rant at the 7:19 mark is so ... I mean whatever I am out wont be back u are pushing the negativity moriaty whatever dude
I like to think most of my work here is rather positive. Perhaps watch some more of my videos and see what you think. I appreciate the comments all the same though!
we are cynical we cannot celebrate anything that brings a smile without suspecting conspiracies. I mean sometimes quite often a human creates a tiny moment that cracks you up makes u smile remember or joy. these moments just like the movies are not the complete experience just the bits you and yours keep to mind. the constant whining on quality of commercial art is crazy if u dont like it dont buy it and caveat emptor and off u go, idk we hate everything we like, celebrated success a year ago is garbage today idk it is what it is but negativity sells cuz humans hate on each other they will pay for systems to do spread the negativity crazy
It isn't all doom and gloom though. Hopefully that came across somewhat in the video. There are positive stories out there but perhaps it is right to be cynical with how things have become at the momoment. This is also hope :)
I have been playing games since 2001/2002. Maybe I have a different approach to games because I'm from a different generation. I believe there is some fault on both sides. On the one hand, many creators count on quick earnings from "games as a service". Most people don't play dozens of titles a year. They play several games, sometimes even 3-4 titles. And they often spend money there on skins etc. I don't buy skins or cases myself and I'm more of a single-player player, but I have no influence on it disappearing from games. This will stay with us. Years later, it turned out that game developers can suffer from the same problems as every industry - poor management, spending money on projects only to have them canceled, overworked employees, etc. On the other hand, people nostalgically remember the 90s and 2000s as the best gaming period, but they are probably too blinded by it. Sure, there were plenty of great games, but there were also some worse ones, and I don't miss some of the solutions and mechanics. In 2023/2024, I played a lot of new games and older ones too, and I had a great time, that was the most important thing to me, sorry for my english ;)
I understand your points here. It seems most industries do suffer like you say, sadly. I am sure there there is definitly some rose tinted goggles when thinking about back in the day 100%, but it does seem like things were less impacted back then by some of things I said in the video. I am similar to yourself in that I also play games from all different ages as well as modern. I think that is the best way to be, just play what you enjoy. As to your English, I would say it is very good. I can't speak/type a few sentences in any other language so you are doing alright! :)
I agree with what you have said here and I think you have a right to be cynical. As a gamer for over 30 years I too have seen the shift. Whilst I have no personal issues with cosmetic skins for things it is because I can easily ignore them the constant money grab in some of the big names is ridiculous and gamble boxes are a licence to print money for some. There are some exceptions but it is something when it is the smaller and more independent studios that seems to be more willing to take a risk on something new and unique.
Gambling boxes can be quite ridiculous. I am hoping some legislation from the UK and where else might help matters. You are right about Indie Devs; they do seem to be the ones taking the risks and doing things the old way :)
I feel you on the “unlearning” The classic skate controls. My girlfriend never played skate, and she picked up the controls for session really quickly, especially for not being a gamer. She loves watching skateboarding and the controls felt intuitive and natural for her right off the bat. It really boils down to the feeling you get when you nail the trick/line. Very fun!
That's great, I am glad she is into it! The game really does well in giving an experience close to skating. I imagine if I ever play a new Skate game I will be all over the place with it having played this :)
Just picked this game up on sale and it's so sick and good.
It is great fun! :)
I always wanted to oearn how to skate but y'all skaters use to be the worst, called me a poser because I was trying to learn how to do an ollie. So I just stuck the the video games
I am really sorry to hear you had a bad time there. If it means anything, not all skaters are like that. I would have encouraged you as best I could :)
Love the recollection of your skating days.😊
It was good times! :)
Great video Scott
Thanks! :)
is that fun to play? I considering whather go with it
It is good fun indeed. Especially if you like party based RPGs and enjoy the retro style. :)
I really enjoy your content and commentary!
Thank you. I am glad you are enjoying it! :)
It was recommended for me out of nowhere. Excellent review. I wasn't looking for a new game but will probably play it.
Awesome! Thanks for the kind words. I am glad you like it and inpsired you to give it a try :)
what was your favourite commodore game?
Oh, gosh, that is difficult. Silkworm, dragon breed, Gauntlet were all great but it has to be Golden Axe. That was the first time I ever played it so it holds a special place in this dwarf's heart :)
Great review. Looks like a fun game!
It is great fun, exceedingly cheap and you can be a pirate :)
Another great review, Balidorf!
Thank you! :)
Its a masterpiece now

Thanks for the detailed review. Game looks good and seems fun.
Thanks for checking out the video! It is a really solid effort and very cheap to boot :)
great as usual.
Thank you! :)
This is just heroes 5... Like even the campaign is similar, the arstyle, the gameplay, almost 70% is the same...
I assume you are talking about Heroes of Might and Magic 5? As far as I am aware Heroes of Might and Magic was initially inspired by the original King's Bounty in 1990. They are both quite similar for sure. I guess if you like one you would enjoy the other :)
@@balidorf8573 If you say so
Happily already subscribed. Thanks for covering this game and I've now picked it up. It's not a very big deal but, I wish that in the combat section you would have included a few samples of the combat sounds (explosions, lasers, etc). I'm sure i'll be pleasantly surprised. Great video nonetheless!
Thanks for the kind words and the feedback! I think you are definitly right. I shall endevour to give some kind of demonstration of sound and such the next time so it is clear what I am talking about :)
Such a great usage of descriptive adjectives. You got a sub.
Thank you very much :)
This game looks amazing using a oled monitor.
Awesome! It is a great looking game overall. The city feels alive.
I waited 4 years before starting cyberpunk but glad i waited cause now im hooked and with phantom liberty got me addicted as well
I am glad to have waited too. There are people who enjoyed the initial release - which is great - but I think engaging with it now everything has been sorted, is a good thing.
im happy you enjoyed the game and had so much positivity to share about it
It is good fun. Really solid game for people who like city builders.
Huge thanks for covering the game, matey! It was a fun watch!
Yargh! No worries. It's good fun! :)
really great review, thanks for your time
Thank you for the kind words and thanks for watching! :)
Excellent.
I'm disappointed the EU initiative has lost steam. There are hardly any new people signing. I really hope some bigger creators promote it.
I wish I as a British person could sign it.
