In terms of the direct impact on crime, Jones is likely overstating Tramp's First Step Act, since there is a ratio of ten to one, between state and federal inmates. Many new approaches to crime have been employed, in the last century, but crime has continued to rise, at least the heinousness instances of it, seems to have significantly increased. I suspect that federal inmates like many White opioid addicts have better lives to return to, once they get out of prison, or kick their habit. Whatever is being done to address that problem, may not have an impact on Black addicts. Rehabilitating inmates is only half of the solution, to crime, in terms of inmates. We must stop producing new ones. Many factors are involved in criminality, especially the recidivism rate associated with it. I believe there is a cultural factor that is being largely ignored, by all involved in solving the problems. If they are working in this area, I doubt it is being done, in as systematic a manner, as is needed. Enough is surely not being done, to stress to the public the widespread harm the ripple effect, the crime level and nature of it, has on the overall society. I'm of the opinion that the 'War on Poverty', has never been successful, because the people who received the help, were/are the main soldiers, in that war effort, and they are the ones, who must do the bulk of the fighting. They were never given marching order - what their specific role was. They were not made aware of the importance of the war, that it must be won, and what the consequences were, if the war was not won. This same approach is needed, for all the problems we face, as a nation, even for the common problems we face, as a specie. We would do ourselves well, to give ourselves a 'peace-dividend'. This is a message someone like Jones seems built to deliver, to the country, and the world.

I really enjoyed this video and truly believe we all need to be listening to Dr. Stanislas Dehaene and Dr. Mark Seidenberg when it comes to beginning reading instruction. I'm not sure if it's in this video or another one, where Dehaene talks about all words being able to read phonetically. I'm attaching a link to a video I've created of my daughter's journey becoming a proficient reader. The video is her journey reading phonetically-controlled books. She has not been given a single word to memorise. She reads all words phonetically by blending the sounds from left to right, even words that many people think cannot be read in this way. th-cam.com/video/6Yp3orsGLNw/w-d-xo.html

She's in the blue building in LA now, all info controlled, etc etc. Looks like scientology is starting to crumble simply from truth escaping due to internet: She will rue the day she did this.

22:26 … My favorite (read: pet peeve) “thought terminating cliche” is “hater.” When I hear it I’m always stuck wondering why it’s said, who’s saying it and who they’re directing it toward. It always just felt like a coping mechanism or as a sort of excuse. The term “thought terminating cliche” I think sums it up nicely. Thank you for teaching me that.

Maureen, I have read your book "So We Read On" , and comments by Matthew Bruccoli. These have been so helpful in adding enjoyment to reading Gatsby again, and again. I confess that I had never read this book until 1979, ten years after graduating high school. If it had been assigned, I am sure I would have paged through this and made my report from that, probably receiving a D or generous C grade. I happened to find this book at my mother's home and read the first couple of sentences. I took it home and continued reading a few pages after work each night until I came to the mention of Louisville, and Camp Taylor. These drew my interest because I live in Louisville and as a youngster played football at Camp Taylor park. After completing my reading of the novel I always felt closer to the book when passing Camp Taylor, which is completely different from Fitzgerald's time here. It has stayed in my thoughts since my first reading it 44 years ago. I have tried to interest my wife in the book but she only seemed drawn to Robert Redford's portraying Gatsby in the movie. My apologies for going on and on. I do want to thank you for your enthusiasm on Fitzgerald's genius. His writing, especially with this masterpiece which amazes me more and more.
