as Percy once said, “ Bonham could always do more with one bass drum than with two”
Love these snips! 😊
Ha I love this part of the solo
Double bass ain't nothin new ! He kills it though.
I was reading that those double bass drums were annoying to Jimmy page so that's why bonzo stayed with only one. I have to admit that those 26" monsters were just too loud. Strange size bass drums too. I have a 22X16 and it's perfect for me. Even 20's sound great for recording. Most modern kits don't go beyond 22's. Recording technology was absolutely terrible for drummers back then. They sounded "far away" because of the echo. Today's modern engineering brings the drums close up.
Is there a copy of more of this solo? I doubt he played the solo for 1.5 mins. Unless that's all that was taped

@@bonhamalsowaltzes1601 thanks . It rocked. What a monster. Long live Bonzo
The scarey thing is, the second note played on the floor tom I believe is actuall played on the bass drum LL R BB
@@woodmanbattersea I think it’s this pattern: 3:38 m.th-cam.com/video/uocEAmP9Sng/w-d-xo.html&pp=ygUJQm9uaGFtIDUw
Очень клёво,чувак!👍👏
@@chased-penguins Thank you!
Dude couldn't swing to save his life. Terrible touch; hit the drums far too hard. So many other, better drummers.
What’s that crazy ufo shaped hi hat in the lower left corner?😮
Haha it’s two Paiste PSTX Pure Bells on a cable hi hat stand
LOUIE BONHAM....
Great
@@peterbittner8263 Thank you!
I can think of four or five drummers off the top of my head that we're doing stuff as amazing as him or better Carl Palmer Billy Cobham Mitch Mitchell Ginger Baker and Bill bruford and you want to talk about double bass let's talk about Bill Ward nobody can do double bass like him
lord have mercy
This so cool! Imagine the difference in drumming history if he had kept this 2nd BD?! So many drummers have based their single foot technique on listening to Bonham. (even if they don't know it because it's been passed on by another drummer)
Wow how are you this good? You are pulling things from the montreux show from 1970! Amazing job there Rob!
Thank you Sam! Right, this is freestyle but Montreux 1970 inspired! I have another video where I try to play the Montreux 70 opening part note by note
Excellent work my friend
@@Bradof77 Thank you Brad!
@@bonhamalsowaltzes1601 I know that most people simply can’t understand the commitment and discipline involved in such a “simple” exercise, but seriously top shelf stuff right there!
@Bradof77 Thanks! Yes it’s a simplified exercise. But a good way to get started before improvising with this stuff, I think
Early 1969, Grant tries to talk Bonham into getting a double kick... Grant: Moonie has double bass. Mitch has double bass now too. Gin-ja? You're as good as them! Bonzo: Gin-ja couldn't swing a sack of s**t.
born again with internet lessons would be nice
I am sure there will be the "Oh, I can do better than that" comments, but what most of the younger generation do not realize is that "trap" drumming was still in it's infancy. People like Bonham, Belleson, Williams, Barelow, Morello, Dodds, Bob Siebenberg (supertramp) and many others pushed the envelope. Now, they can go on youtube and learn anything they want. Double bass was still in its infancy.
Great! Inspirational!
Hi Jim! Thank you!
🎯I’ve never seen anyone break down Bonham’s soloing patterns so effectively and play them as accurately as you do. 🙏
@@hypercussion Thank you very much!
On point!!!
@@drumngrewve Thank you Manny!
That double bass setup reminds me of Bill Ward’s setup for Cal Jam ‘74 with Black Sabbath.
Haha yes but without the flowers

hes the reason ive told every drummer ive played in a band with, leave the double pedal at home; you dont need it to play rock properly.
Jack kerOuac, Jack kerOuac, rinse and repeat.
Exactly 👍
GREAT MAN🗿🗿🗿❗❗❗
1:18 quoting ginger baker here....
You have a reference where Baker plays this? It’s this lick m.th-cam.com/video/Kw72DThFR3U/w-d-xo.html
lmao. ‘oh baby!’ and ‘camels and elephants’ by graham bond. the latter being the basis of moby dick from the 70s onward. this was before baker had two bass drums, though he used this same rhythm on ‘toad’ in 1966. come on yall, do ur research.
baker also uses variations of this rhythm- based on 6:4 polythythm- on the live version of ‘toad’ from wheels of fire (1968)

@@AQganon Thank you! I didn’t mean to ask you in a skeptical manner
right 2 major drums
Wow - great! Perfect!
Thanks Jim! Have you tried this phrase?
@@bonhamalsowaltzes1601Yes I have in the past but without this level of insight. I’ll try it again with your video as my guide. 😊
@jimbrey1138 Cool!
Thank you so much for breaking these down and demonstrating them (outstandingly). You’re a golden resource!!!!!!
Hi Terry! Thank you very much!
Sounds To Me Like A Double Roll But Going Faster !
It’s close to a double stroke roll, you get a lot of speed with RLRRLL
Bonham actually knew nothing about rudiments. It just came out naturally.
What is the sticking pattern after 0:41?
RLRRLRRLL triplets in 3/4 (R)LR(R)LR(R)LL ( ) = hi hat
Awesome, thank you. I have always played that wrong, RllrrLrrL.
Sure! That seems to be a cool one too, starting as a six stroke roll RllrrL
Jesus. The fury and talent of a young John Bonham is out of this world.
Ringo Starr came up with two bass drums.
Wooden kick beater?
Right, red Danmar
JHB the perfect match of power and finesse.
@@samgw9803 Well put
Easy to hear his influence on Alex Van Halen from 1982 onward.
No Way! Ginger Baker was way better on two bass drums hands down!!
Nice feel!
@@AndreasHalvardsson Thank you Andreas!
Yes, well played - I think Bonham took inspiration from Max Roach.
@@AndreasHalvardsson Thank you! Yes: The Drum Also Waltzes 👍
Po co mu dwaa bębny jak wystarczył jeden! Niektórzy mają dwa a nie potrafią grać na jednym np.Nick Mason zabktórego w studio często grał Simon Phillips!
This is really average and not that good. John played better from 1972 on up.
