Quitting Games Won't Fix Your Problems
For as long as I can remember, I’ve always heard people tell me that one day I’ll grow out of video games because they’re for children and I’ll find more productive things to do with my time. The last time I checked, I’ve entered into what many would consider adulthood. Therefore, I think it’s high time I explore why this sentiment doesn't actually hold any weight.

Why Gaming STILL Isn't Respected

    It's only the people that are older than 40 now that disrespect gaming because anyone younger than that has probably played some sort of videogames. At least in their childhood. So this shouldn't be a problem in the future.

  • @belstar1128
    @belstar1128 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

    i think at this point pretty much every man i know under 40 and every woman under 25 is at least a casual gamer .i think that a lot of older people will never change their mind no matter what. i think that when tv was invented there were simply more young people because older generations had more kids so the opinions of those generations became less relevant more quickly you also have gen x that is kind of a strange one since video games existed when they were young but were not very common yet so many people of that generation wouldn't even see a video game until 1985 if they lived in a rural area while others had the lasted games as soon as possible and most women were scared away from video games because it was marketed as something masculine. and i hope people wont take this the wrong way but women are just less likely to try out things that are new and unpopular and experimental its starting to change with gen z but a lot of relatively young women still have this penalty . also another thing that may be politically incorrect but i recently saw a lot of anti gaming comments from certain people online but turns out those people were Indian in countries like India video games were a rare luxury until the 2000s or even 2010s .their mindset about gaming right now is like America in the 80s so an Indian born in 1990 didn't grow up video video games while an American born in 1990 did so the Indian millennial has more in common with an American boomer .with the internet you can sometimes have these strange culture clashes were they don't realise they are talking to an international audience. also it seems like the media really hates video games more than the average person so this can distort peoples view of history they make it seem like playing video games as an adult was socially unacceptable .like playing a game boy in public was like playing with toy cars and you were seen as crazy but in reality nobody cared they just didn't get the appeal of it .

  • @belstar1128

    7:00 i noticed that in some other countries anti tv hysteria was a thing until the 1980s but America and the uk was ahead of the times when it came to tv and you also have to keep in mind movies had existed since the late 1800s .so this was just a way to watch them at home and you can even argue movies themselves were just pre-recorded theatre that is a form of entertainment as old as humanity

  • @belstar1128
    @belstar1128 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

    4:40 to be fair in the 1970s video games were very rare you had a handful of arcades in major cities were they were mixed in with pinball and nobody owned a console or pc until the rise of space invaders and pac man when gaming became more of a major thing but at that point he was already teenager. and while the nes was good the nes marketing made it seem very childish so any adult was going to avoid it same with most 80s consoles

    Be grateful for your local gym Jesus Christ. Look at your arms. How are you not humiliated by them? And if someone saying “I don’t like spending hours doing something that doesn’t contribute to anything in the real world” makes you have a panic attack and “run away” as you literally said, then you should be put in a hospital. This is legitimately pathetic.

    Videogames are such a part of me that I can't really imagine my life without it. I still have other hobbies and I'm not addicted because sometimes I take accidental breaks, but if I'm being honest whenever I "screw up" such as staying up late, not studying enough or skipping a workout its mostly a roll of the die, sometimes its Reddit, sometimes its TH-cam, sometimes its Videgames. At the end of the day, I've accepted usually the problem is myself and that's OK, videogames just happen to be a convenient scapegoat because they usually have a longer runtime than other forms of media. I do think you should diversify your media consumption and definitely exercise or at the very least make attempts at taking care of your body with a decent diet and good sleep, but if I'm being honest life would be kinda boring without games.

    This is a topic I've always been passionate about. I love video games, and to see people continue to promote this rhetoric about everything being an addiction is so frustrating. If it weren't for some of my favorite series, I wouldn't be who I am today. Video games are a part of me, and I love them. Art, through any medium, is NEVER pointless. There's always this idea about it "not being reality," and that's so wrong. It is an art form; it is entertainment. Art is made by humans based on their observations of the world. It is inherently tied to reality; it is *real*, and it is *human*. I could go on, but it isn't necessary. Good video, man!

      Thank you! Yeah, I agree 100%! I understand when people argue that fiction in and of itself isn’t the way the world works and therefore not “reality,” but what intrinsically makes a movie or video game any less of a “reality” than say, a book? What then is their definition of reality? Great points!

    I played a lot of Smogon Singles in the competitive Pokémon scene before I eventually put it down in college, after my online friends quit. While I didn't enjoy it anymore, my time spent was was far from a waste: it taught me how to think abstractly when I brainstormed new builds for the ladder, as I could conceive of them as ideas and pieces. It let me center teams around unpredictable movesets with actual plans, and enhance my rhetoric on forums.

    Boomers: "Video games are a waste of time" Also Boomers: *proceeds to put 60,000 hours a week into Candy Crush* In all seriousness, I think that certain games ARE a waste of time, but most are not. There are certainly a lot of games that exist primarily to waste/burn time... for example, I find there is little point in playing online shooters or something of that nature aside from just burning time or getting good. And hell, a lot of f2p mobile games are literally INTENTIONALLY DESIGNED to waste the time (and money) of the player. I prefer a game that will have some sort of obvious positive impact on me. Xenoblade has had an immense impact on my development as a person and my core beliefs, and many other games have also impacted me positively on a smaller level being teaching me a lesson, or helping me come to terms with things. Even then, depending on how you play said "time-wasting" games, they can still have a positive impact such as developing friendships with people you play with. I might not care for shooters, but if a group if friends has a blast together playing a game, then that is a great thing to see and I'm happy for them. It's downright silly to say that video games as a whole are a waste of time, because if that was true, the same argument could be made for every single TV series, every single movie, every single BOOK... frankly, EVERYTHING we do could be considered a "waste of time." If some activity has any semblance of positive impact on a person, then it was NOT a waste of time for that person.

    I wouldn’t be here right now typing this if I wasn’t for Persona 3 Reload, a game that came into my life right when I was 1. insanely depressed and 2. wanting to give a long JRPG a try just to see if I still liked the genre. That experience saved my life which is why seeing the drama surrounding Reload’s DLC was so frustrating to me. People are so stuck in being cynical and jaded toward games that they can’t see the value in the titles we have now, even Indy productions.

    I get what you're saying here, but I think you're off base. Needing those around him to talk or knock sense into him in a low period doesn't diminish Rex's role in the story and I think you're severely underselling Rex as a character. Yes, he is just a regular guy--that's the whole point. Of all the franchise protagonists, Rex is the most out of his depth (ironic) and normal guy of all of them. But there's value in being an otherwise unremarkable person thrust into extraordinary circumstances and having to just figure it out and make it work. Klaus' words weren't an admonishment or lack of impress with Rex by way of omission. He needed to see what humanity had to offer beyond just one boy, and the party is representative of that, but Pyra/Mythra could not have reawakened or made it there without him. Having a human moment in a time of a major defeat is to be human. When I got to the end of this video, it felt like much to do about nothing. There's no secret revealed here. Great editing work though.

    I could care less what these talking heads think about games. I play video games and do calisthenics so you can do both. You can have fun outside but also have fun inside. You just gotta manage your time better. I'll continue to play them until the day I'm no longer on Earth in my happy man cave. I never cared about their opinions when I was a little kid and I don't care about them now as an adult. I don't care about their validation, acceptance and opinions. They can hate gaming all they want but it's not going anywhere. BAHAHA! They're a dying breed of people who's old opinions and ways are going by the way of the dinosaurs and that means it won't matter in the future. Gaming is the future and it's here to stay. Film preservation is already an issue in and of itself because they're unable to preserve the older films before the digital age of filming. I'll keep enjoying playing games and these talking haters can keep yapping like the annoying neighbors dogs. They can scream their hatred of video games on the highest mountains of Mt. Everest or the Himalayan mountains and I could care less. The older people in my family never cared about gaming back then and they don't care about it now. I'm one of the only members in my family who see its value and its unrecognized potential in the mainstream.

    There are a good couple of times we're the sunken cost phallacy forced me to put in more time with a game that just wasn't delivering or had a story that wasn't coming together in hopes that it would all mesh or that the parts I liked would return to the focal point. Two in particular made me basically complete the game out of spite, Scarlet Nexus and Stellar Blade. Stellar Blade in particular hurt a lot because I followed Project Eve and had high hopes for it as well as the fact that the core combat mechanics are so good. It's not even that I hated my time with it, it's just looking back at 70 freaking hours and three playthroughs it did not deserve that time, or at least I know I was digging for more "experience" with finishing returns, especially when every new ending exacerbated my problems with the story. And the thing is I'm probably about to do it again. I stopped SMT5 the moment it became clear that A) The story is NOT going to go anywhere satisfying for characters or themes and B) they really expect me to farm 20 goddamn levels in the same area for no reason other than theres no more content and their stupid damage scaling system. But now that Vengeance is coming out I feel like I'd need to finish my current 60 hour playthrough to justify my opinions as well as purchasing the game a second time (if it reviews well that is)

    • @DerajjParallax
      @DerajjParallax 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      What’s funny is I had a very similar experience with Stellar Blade. It was the first game I platinumed and the reason I went for it was for the same reason, the combat was really enjoyable. The story seemed to be going somewhere semi interesting which helped me along but the accomplishment of that platinum trophy is what really pushed me I think and I don’t regret the time I spend with it. Sure I might’ve obsessed over it a little too much, but it was a neat experience for me. It was also fun breezing through the story with the subsequent play throughs. With that said, I get where you’re coming from. It’s hard to strike that balance between wanting to get your money’s worth and realizing that the game just may not be for you.

    I don't think your GF isn't into video games 'cause she isn't good at them; she's no good at them because she isn't into them. Same for you an sports.

    People can think whatever they want about anything they want. They have that right. Life is about the Pursuit of Happiness. If you are enjoying your life, whatever you may do with it as long as you are taking care of your responsibilities rather than neglecting them, then who fucking cares. Haters hate because they are miserable and can't stand to see other people around them being more happy than them. If you are happy, that is all that matters, and if people want to try to tear you down or disrespect you for what you do, again as long as you are taking care of your responsibilities in life, then you need to keep them out of your life. Don't let other miserable people try to tear you down because you are doing something that makes you happy.

    I think it honestly is because of the unpopularity of gaming back then. Somebody born in the 70s or 80s would become gamers when it was a relatively unpopular hobby, and would be fully grown up when it was still a relatively unpopular hobby. I was born in 2003, when the gaming industry was starting to overtake movies/TV and music, and ended my ‘childhood’ at age 18 in 2021, when the gaming industry was overtaking movies/TV and music combined. The under 18 demographic and 18-34 demographic is the highest demographic of gamers by a long shot, and I don’t think it’s because it’s a childish hobby, I think it is because those are the age demographics when gaming REALLY started to take off. Just about everybody my age I have ever met has played video games, especially if they are male. Hell, it would be rarer to find someone that didn’t play them. It is just a generational thing

    I never noticed she didn’t have an actual American accent, and I was born in America! I’ve picked up a slightly English accent over the years due to lots of exposure to British (especially southern English) media + family being from England. That’s probably part of why I didn’t notice, but she’s also just an amazing actress

    From our perspective, being great at video games is a lot like being a painter. It's an art. But just like with all art, there are critics. Simply put, these mainstream media personalities are just jealous of us because we have talent and they don't. In fact, I'm willing to bet that the closest they've ever come to playing a video game is desktop Solitaire.

    Video game does pose problems i gained a lot of weight playing videogames lost interest in reading and many other things other hobbies which involves physical efforts or seeking something does have an end goal apart from pro gamers all other's have no end goal it just provides temporary satisfaction and a false sense of accomplishment and we can get lost in it

    Why? Because gamers are awful (generally). Anyone that experienced online games with voice chat, knows that. Gamers also have such a persecution complex, like Christians in the US. Lol. There are literally corporations that destroy towns and get people killed, but EA had been consistently been voted "most evil company in the world"... Because they dared charge an extra 5.99 for some weapon skins? Seriously? Pffft.

    Gaming isn't bad. Playing video games is not a waste of time. However, we still have to be careful to not cross the line where video games consume all of our time. It's all about balance, management of how we spend our time. It's healthy to play a video game for hours, even a whole day if you're a kid/teen or you're on your day-off. But that can't be the whole week, month or even year (that happened a lot on 2020, and not only by video games). Gaming isn't a bad thing or a waste of time, and it's up to us to prove that it's no different from watching tv, movies or even doing sports. Edit: On another note, I can think of one thing that is also overlooked and not respected. At least not as it should. Fanfiction. Those who wrote fanfics will most likely agree with me at that.
