Mending waterproof jacket with nylon patch
Just did CPR on my son's church pants before church this morning. Thank you!
Hey my favourite bag has just broke, the zip is working but has come away from the actual bag leaving a hole in the top , the zip works just nkt attached to the bag, i went to get it fixed and apparently i have to replace the whole thing and it is soo expensive so needing to learn how to do it online and not having much luck finding a video that helps, this one is the best one ive seen so far, even though it isnt a bag, its the same concept..if anyone could help i would greatly appreciate it 🙏
Send photos to us at repairwhatyouwear@gmail.com and we will make some suggestions x
Thank you for the useful video! Any reco for twill with glue on the back? Thanks!
Love this! But what if you inserted the needle eye-first? It might be easier to catch the loops.
Great video, thank you for sharing your amazing skills!
Thank you for the thank you - so glad it is helpful. Please tell others about our tutorials as the aim is to spread the skills...
While my mind is nowhere near as neat as this, my jumper no longer has a hole ... Thank you!
But i cant understand how to do it. ..where to start
This video SAVED MY LIFE (or at least my 300€ wool sweater!)! I'm a man in my mid 40s with nearly ZERO sewing ability or talent and I was able to successfully repair the moth hole in my favorite sweater. I can't thank you enough!!! I couldn't even find where the hole was when I was finished!😂
That is just the best feedback - you have made our year! Very glad and keep fixing... we have a heap of other videos designed for those who just want to fix stuff. 😃
Do you tie a knot at the bottom? Are you sewing with a single instead of double thread as it's not doubled up fully?
We recommend single thread use for most repairs, except doubled up for buttons (see our videos). We don't knot as all materials are different so it's unreliable. We suggest a stay stitch at the beginning and end of each work. This is going over the same small stitch two or three passes. You can see we do this method at the start of every repair tutorial. Hope this is helpful.
Thank you so much for this tutorial 🙏🏻😁
Thank you for this! I did five mends on a Pringle of Scotland cashmere cardigan, the fixes blend right in! Not sure how it got 5 holes, I could have sworn it was fine when I got it :-/
Thank yoh so much! I've always been the girl who loved taking the wood shop classes rather than the 'girly' classes like sewing, knitting etc. But when I got older, married and a mum, I've always regretted not learning to work a sewing machine😮💨 And now I have a pair of trousers which are my favorite and of course the zipper broke. I'm so glad I've found your video!! I'll get new zipper in the morning to try this out; thanks again❤👍lots of love from the Netherlands ❤️ 💗 ❤️
I've got a 10ish years old jacket that 2 times a year needs to have its buttons sewn back. I have a good feeling about it this time, that they are going to stay longer thanks to this video! It already looks at least much neater than my previous attempts :D
Perfect! My husband’s jumper looks so nice except for the collar falling off 😝
Hi, thanks for this useful video! Can you do this if the yarn has broken? Also, what type of stitch/needle/thread do you use to stitch it back in? Thanks!
Wonderful tutorial! There is much better explanation than other videos or shorts out there, who omit the most important parts in most cases.
This is exactly what I needed. I just found several moth holes in a black cashmere sweater. Thank you
Great video, thanks for keeping it short
Brilliant tutorial easy to follow thank you!
Ooh, thank you, glad it is helpful.
Thank you! I found a hole in one of my jumpers 2 years ago and went and bought the exact same one. Then the new jumper got a hole as well so I thought I’d try and mend it, found your video. Ended up mending the new and old one, not a great job but close enough, luckily I didn’t go buy a third, thank you!
What type of elastic is that with the holes in it? Where can I buy it?
It's called Buttonhole Elastic, usually in black or white. It should be available at most haberdashery stores and online. Hope this is helpful.
This would be great but I can't see it due to the subtitles
I'm really sorry to hear this - is this on the phone? It should be clear on a laptop, just checked.
Mine is almost like the first one that happened almost instanly. I was sitting down while hunting and sat on a branch and it tore a hole right along the seam. It sucks because I'd just bought those jeans and waxed them and everything
sorry to hear this. If it's along the seam, then that can provide strength. And if you are able to patch behind, you can still use the same technique illustrated, just wrap in the loose threads as you sew. There is hope!
It's a sailing stitch because it's used for fixing ripped sails - the finished mend is smooth from both sides, so it doesn't catch any wind, disturbing the flow, or the pull... whatever the aerodynamic term for thatis😅
Thanks for this extra bit of info, hadn't thought about the wind, just about strength and matching raw edges. Doesn't make me a faster runner though!
@@RepairWhatYouWear oh, how I wish it worked this way!😅 Half of my life's problems would be gone just like that!
Thank you !
A mi no me gusta este remiendo. Eso es simplemente cerrar un agujero. Yo prefiero tejer los puntos rotos con una hebra idéntica y dejarlo como si no hubiera habido nunca un roto.
thank you so much for this!! my husband is typically who does the sewing in the household, but he had no clue how to mend the hole in the arm of my favorite sweater! i just tried this out and it worked like a charm!
Thank you! I was so frustrated when I bought a knitwear sweater vest from a second hand shop only to find a hole when I came home. This was a very easy tutorial to follow!
It's a shame there's no comments. This is wonderful! Thanks to you, I'm gonna fix my work pants!
Well, glad you found it! These leisure pants are still going 4 years later - good for the environment, great for saving money! Hope you have the same experience and look at any of our videos for other repair help. Tell your friends too?
@@RepairWhatYouWear Absolutely! You definitely gained a follower (^^)
I'm right handed and I start right side.
If that works for you that's great! New learners find this the easiest method as stitches are not covered by their hands.

Demo would have been so much easier if you had used a light-colored piece of fabric.
This is true but it was a real mend and most leggings are black. The good news is that these leggings have been worn twice/three times a week for hard exercise for over 2 years. So it's a "demo" that actually works.
great explanation thank you!!
Would love a recommendation for a good "ergonomic" needle sharp enough for this job, with an eye big enough to see...I need something not to thin to give me finger cramps that is sharp and easy for MY eyes!!
A needle torn my shoe A needle repaired it 😂
What a fantastic niche channel - love your content is about mending and keeping rather than accumulating more!
Does this apply to lycra shorts too? Thank you ❤
Anything in lycra. We have three suggestions for repairing leggings that can be used on anything stretchy lycra, the techniques offer you different approaches depending on the size and placement of the hole. Hope this is helpful. Skim down out TH-cam channel videos. R&E
My son has a pair of uniform trousers that he refuses to wear because the zip opens the wrong way. Otherwise they seem to be sized and shaped for men. Is there a way to change the fly open the opposite way?
Thanks for this video, I bought the cutest jumper from a garage sale and realized the zipper was broken when I got home. ❤❤❤
Good job! Glad it helped and keep going with the preloved.
I have a vintage moth worn sweater... Maybe I will have a go at repairing it.
thankful for your tutorial! <3 heartbroken about my beloved jeans that are apparently beyond repair </3
Thank you so much for the clear, real time explanations. Very well done!
Could you a do a video of this technique on a knit dress that is one solid color? I have a khaki knit dress I want to shorten that I'm scared to cut because I have no idea where to cut it because it doesn't have the green stitch like your dress.
Please send an image to repairwhatyouwear@gmail.com as it's important to look at the size of the knit. Will respond directly.
Thank you, helped me repair my shirt!
Very glad! If you have any other repairs then do look at our other videos, we hope they are useful.
Does it work for bigger holes?
It should work on larger holes. If the fabric moves around a lot then the stitching (using "wooly nylon" should be firm enough to hold the shoe shape otherwise your foot may "slop" a bit. If you need to mend a large hole in a vulnerable place then a stick on patch may be needed. Hope this is helpful.
Thank you for sharing!!!
This is INCREDIBLE! Thank you so so much!🎉❤
thank you this was super helpful!
really really enjoyed this video, exactly what i needed to know how to do, you fucking rock
Thank you ever so much. I've been waiting for this video for ages. 👍🇨🇵
