Well done Mr. Bowen! I enjoy how detailed your videos are getting into the types of things you’re planning. You offer a great perspective on what it’s like in a new classroom at a new school. I have never been able to get into a classroom as early as you did. That certainly is a blessing. One thought I had when I saw the lunch sheet was about breakfast. It might be nice to have a box if the child normally brings a breakfast. That way all of the food information is on the same sheet. Have a great workshop week!

Often using dry erase markers over top of sharpie/permanent markers will allow you to erase the sharpie writing. Just trace over top and wipe off. It works for me on laminated items, the whiteboard and my desks/tables. More porous materials may be tricky.

If a child needs to sit next to me at the kidney table then I will put one there. If a child chooses to run multiple times after being reminded the expectations of walking in the hallway and why that is important, I will ask that they walk by me and hold my hand. This just helps keep them next to me and let's me know they are being safe. If they can prove they can walk by themselves, they will no longer be asked to hold my hand.

Great advice! Another piece of advice is to check to see if your district has a pacing guide that they want you to follow. The most important thing is to ask your team teachers.

I would like to agree with you. My district provides pacing guides and will tell you how far behind you may be based on testing, school activities, etc. I taught second grade last year. Our reading program was HMH Into Reading. Our Curriculum Instructional Map selected certain stories from certain modules for a few weeks. Then, we transitioned to two weeks of writing instruction. Determining what your district wants you to teach may change the perspective based on the program guide and scope and sequence as the district may have other ideas. Hope everyone enjoys the upcoming school year!

I have always loved "centers" even up to second grade (I call them stations during reading block and math block). I do however suggest that the writing area be on a shelf next to a table same for art. Students walking from that one area to another with the restroom and box of blocks right there could become hectic with so many littles in the room or messy.

How do you deal with hallway misbehavior? What consequences do you use in your classroom and for running in the hallway? Also do you have a studnet sit right next to you if they need to be in close proximity to you and where do they sit next to you? Do they sit right next to you at the kidney table ? Any running in hallway or classroom are handled the same way. Calmly and firmly say "Go back and walk." If students balk go with them. "Come I will go with you." Follow with "Good job walking. That is the safe way." Not a lecture. Definatly not yelling down a hall "WALK," The students taking action puts the consequence on the student. Adults yelling down the hall while students run puts the consequence on the adult. Meaning students will continue. Sorry this is a serious pet pieve of ine. My class we discuss it during begining of the year procedures. Students from other classes quickly learn what teachers they can run past and which teachers they have to walk near. I have seen students run past some teachers and immediately stop when other teachers are in view. All broken rules come down to if this procedure is broken, a student will follow the procedure correctly. "Oh you threw a piece of garbage on the ground, pick it up and throw it in the garbage can." "Oh you wrote on your table, here is a rag. Clean it up. Now here is a piece of paper." As to your proximity question, teachers especially kinder, have less discipline if they are not sittng in their desk the whole time. Unless you are running a small group, you are actively monitering, walking around making sure students are on task, checking for confusion, helping as needed, smiling, checking in. The students learn quickly that you are there to support and that if they miss behave, you are two steps away. I hope this makes sense.

You can even put the black cube storage down horizontal, so you have more room on the top to put bins, etc...

You could maybe store big containers behind the bookshelf to make it less desirable for kids to want to go although I agree with you that if you set those boundaries it won’t be an issue. Also, could you put a vanity type mirror (one that tilts down) on the top of your shelf to face that blind spot so you can see it from your table? Looking great!!

Take out the bigger area rug for sure it looks a bit outdated for the color choice replace it with a lighter color… the classroom color flow is giving a bit to serious with those stronger colors & can make them a bit nervous on the first day…. keep the little library nook put some bing bags in that area put some happy vinyl stickers on the windows so it won’t be so bland the seating arrangement looks a bit every where try putting it all together in the shape of a circle so you can have more room Happy Teaching 🎊 🎊 🎉🎉

Can you put the book shelf facing the other way? Push the one with the red bins all the way over flush with ac, flip the other one. It will eliminate the blind spot. The comp cart will prevent shelf tipping and getting computers is quick so no kids will be back there without your supervision.

You could utilize the air unit for a word building/magnets center. I like the bookshelf in the front. I had a piece similar and when students were done with their work they could get a book to look at (like an early finisher activity). I would keep all furniture pieces until you either find the perfect spot or if you absolutely do not need it because more than likely you will not get it back!

You should update your wish list for a rug. I went to see if your added one and it is not there yet?

I like the idea of putting your black shelf on the counter and placing your 10 drawer cart back beside your teacher table. Then maybe move the math manipulative shelf in the open space in front of the hooks/storage cabinets and stadium bookshelves beside each other. Do students turn in work as they enter the classroom? Maybe consider using another surface for turning in work and getting rid of the table. Also, I think the large group rug would look better turned around.

Move back row tabkes towards ac a bit and move the bookshelf on the edge of the rug facing the other bookshelf, then you wont have as big of a blindspot

You could turn the 2 back tables lengthwise. This would open space I the back of the room. You might even be able to slide your rug back a bit. I would also slide the one bookshelf up to the ac unit. Then place the other bookshelf coming out from the corner of the ac unit, this would fill that empty spot, without blocking the airflow much. On the back of the of the other book shelf, you could store student supplies, such as pencils, crayons, glue, etc.

You could also, move your black cube shelf on top of your cabinets in the corner behind your small group table. Then your 10 drawer cart can move to where you had the black cube shelf.

You could move the library shelf facing you instead. So the library will be open towards your table. Looking great so far!

That’s what I was thinking. The Chromebook cart could go behind that shelf that would now be facing the teacher table.
