      It's all relative and dependent on who you are and what kind of workload you can handle. I'm assuming you're going into UBC Science, where your first-year grades will play a big role in the discipline you get into in second-year. I cannot answer this question for you and it's ultimately a conversation you need to have with yourself or an academic advisor

      @AveryCheng 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      There were occasional times when I found the 11" model a little small, but I carry a laptop with me so it negates the problem quite a lot. My general consensus is that it all depends on what you want from your iPad and how portable you want it to be. If you're bringing your iPad with you in addition to a laptop, I'd probably go with the 11" model. But if you're just bringing your iPad with you and you have a more powerful workstation at home, the 12.9" model might be a better fit. But it's all personal preference and also depends on your budget as well

    5:57 Sounds like your CPU/GPU is throttling due to inadiquate cooling. Placing the laptop on your lap will actually block the intake vents from the underside of the laptop. 8:14 DELL laptops negotiate with it's Dell charger to enable 'express charge' which is DELL's charging protocol that allows 130w over USB C. 3rd party chargers don't have this protocal, thus laptop won't charge at the full speed.

    • @AveryCheng
      @AveryCheng 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Interesting...thanks for providing your input. I actually never use the laptop on my lap (it's always on a desk), so it must be a sign that I should clean out the intake vents or something. Regarding the 130W over USB-C, I've seen other chargers on the market with 140W USB-C charging, so I'm curious to see if it would actually work with this laptop or not

    • @MsNIKITA
      @MsNIKITA 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@AveryCheng In my experiecne 3d party charger don't charge at full speed with Dell systems, there's a chip inside the PSU which negotiate the maximum power it can provide to the connected device. If you like further information, there's a discussion on Dells Community about this, search "3rd party adapter"

    • @MsNIKITA
      @MsNIKITA 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@AveryCheng Personally I don't use the laptop on the desk, rather have it on an arm allowing more airflow under the system. I know it's no the best choice for some folks but if you have a thunderbolt dock, this is ideal. In the "MyDel" app, in "Power" tab, there are options to optimise the thermal management. When i'm using it to render videos, I set it "ultra performance", this boosts the fan speeds a little, helps cool the system more at the expense of slightly more noise - Also, good to vacuum the under vents from time to time, preferably with the system off.

    I bought my Dell XPS 15 fully upgraded last year. And honestly for a laptop on which I spent $3500 Canadian dollars I am kinda not feeling good because of following. However, I still love it (mainly bcz of the design) and might use it for the next many years. But dell really needs to do something for their flagship laptops. 1. Battery only 2 to 2.5 hours ... that's it - Asked Dell support and they said it is normal for Dell... What the hell ! 2. It gets very very hot .. I normally use my laptop on the lap and so my lap burns using this laptop .. Like come on 3. The mouse pad is huge and sometimes while I am typing, any part of my palm touches the mouse pad and it put cursor out of place --- this happens a lot.

    Summarize 📈 Thermal Issues and Overheating Excessive Heat: The laptop gets very hot even during basic tasks, making it uncomfortable to use on the lap. This issue persists despite changing performance settings to 'cool'. Fan Behavior: The fans rarely activate except during intensive tasks like video editing, leading to a trade-off between excessive heat and occasional loud fan noise. 🔋 Battery Life Problems Subpar Performance: The battery life is disappointing, with light usage providing only 6-8 hours. This is attributed to inefficiencies in the Intel CPUs' high-efficiency cores. Dependency on Charger: Due to poor battery performance, carrying a charger is necessary for a full day of use. ⚠ Hardware and Software Malfunctions Playback and Audio Issues: The laptop sometimes struggles with playing TH-cam videos and can exhibit distorted audio or fail to play sound altogether. Bluetooth and Connectivity Problems: Bluetooth connections can drop unexpectedly, and the laptop may shut down while commuting. Display and Charging Quirks: Issues with the display color profile and restrictions on charging with non-Dell chargers hinder usability. 🚨 Major Reliability Concerns Critical Failures: The most severe problem was a recurring issue where the laptop failed to boot, displaying a message indicating that the hard drive was not installed. This led to multiple returns to Dell for repairs. Replacement and Warranty Issues: Despite replacing the SSD, intermittent diagnostic messages indicate ongoing potential hardware failures, causing anxiety about future reliability without a warranty.

    This term the average was 66% 💀 I had Franz and basically everyone skipped to go to Marina’s Classes. The course material did not include waves this year and from what I understand the course structure was much better.

    • @AveryCheng
      @AveryCheng 24 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Even with Marina teaching AND without waves, the average was still 66%??? They've still got a lot of work to do to make the course better LOL

    This course looks like a combo of the old ELEC 251 (Circuit Analysis 1), ELEC 253 (Circuit Analysis 2), ELEC 254 (microelectronics.... diodes, transistors NPN PNP, op-amps, FETs JFET MOSFET etc... and putting them all together to do neat things), plus a lab hands-on component. Are there any dedicated circuit analysis courses, or is this it?

    • @AveryCheng
      @AveryCheng 25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      There's another circuit analysis course that we take in the 2nd semester (ELEC 202, Circuit Analysis II), which focuses on circuit analysis in AC steady state. Concepts like phasors, impedances, power, three-phase, bode plots, and filters are covered in that course

    Hey Avery, Just wondering, on rate my prof, how would you find all the profs that teach a certain course in order to compare, because I haven't taken admission yet so I don't know many profs at UBC

    • @AveryCheng
      @AveryCheng 27 วันที่ผ่านมา

      You aren't able to directly view it on RateMyProf, as professors teach different courses each year. You'll have to wait until you can see the profs on your course lists before course registration in order to see who will be teaching a certain course

    I have no problem with this machine, except of microsoft driver support, but after couple of updates issues dissappeared. fan noise isn't bothering me, battery life is not great, but much better feels than macbook knowing you have 4070 card for 3d rendering, which macbook simply cannot pull.

    I graduated UBC EE 1997. Big difference I see is that MacLeod building underwent a massive facelift inside. Cheese Factory is no longer there. There's other buildings nearby that weren't there before. Courses have changed, so have course numbers. We did MATH 153/154 first year (Calc I, II), then MATH 253/254 (Calc III, IV), MATH 255/257 (ODE,PDE). Not sure what Math 256 is. What textbooks are you using? Or is it all pretty much online nowadays. Back in the day, internet was Netscape Navigator, Yahoo was the main search engine (or Excite or AltaVista), and the wasn't much resources online at all. Good luck in 3rd year (all of us paid the price dearly ELEC 359 Signals and Communications, ELEC 364 Magnetic fields and waves... not sure what the equivalent is these days). Looking back, 3rd year is the toughest for sure. I have more horror stories if you're interested.

    • @AveryCheng
      @AveryCheng 29 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks for sharing your perspective; it's nice to hear what an alumni has to say, and to hear about how much things have changed! MATH 256 is pretty much just ODE's, and we actually don't really use textbooks for many of our courses anymore (at least, they're not "mandatory"). Damn, I didn't think it could get any worse than second-year. I guess the new equivalent of those third year courses are ELEC 311 (electromagnetic field and waves) and ELEC 221 or ELEC 341 (signals and systems). I'd like to hear more about what third year was like!

      @@AveryCheng I see that UBC has moved away from textbooks and towards open/free materials. I think this is good as it saves you buying expensive textbooks. Plus if you need more resources for a course, then there's plenty of tutorials online (plus lots of other online resources). We didn''t have that back then!! Just ourselves and our study groups. Plus, I see that almost all assignments/midterms are almost all online now. How many people in 2nd year EE? I think it was 110 - 120 when I was there, I forget. Obviously EE, Mech, Civil were the big 3. Then Chemical, then smaller ones like Materials, Mining, Eng Phys, etc... I haven't visited UBC campus in quite a few years. I'm sure it's changed a lot.

    • @AveryCheng
      @AveryCheng 29 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Interesting! I think we have around the same number of people in our year (~110-120) as well. If you do visit campus again, you're probably gonna see a lot more housing than you remembered!
