Making Race Bike Number Plates
I used to pay other companies for number plates, but I found that I had more creative freedom and control over quality by learning how to design them myself and have them printed, laminated, and cut by a local printer.
I design number plates for MotoAmerica racers and local club racers. Since I race a Yamaha R1, I have templates ready to go for the 2020-2023 bodywork as well as the 2015-2019 bodywork. I also have R6s and other bikes.
Since there are a lot of bikes that I don't have templates for, sometimes I need for you to make a template and take a photo of it so that your number plates fit your bike perfectly. In this video, I show you how to do that step-by-step.

Update on Yamaha R1 Race Bike Build and my return to riding.
มุมมอง 2.2K3 ปีที่แล้ว
I had a pretty huge crash in a racing practice in 2019 that sidelined me for the 2019 season. I had hoped to ride again in 2020 but the Covid-19 pandemic pretty much nixed that idea. 2021 is half gone but I have spent some time in the garage as of late to get the bike and its electronics 100%. The bike is ready, I just need to keep working on fitness before I can ride again. I have to lose weig...

Hey John. How do you like those domed pucks from woodcraft? Stuck between those, Graves, and GB Racing for my 2016 zx10r race build
@@drov1000r they are the best
@@KneeDownRider Just ordered them. thanks for the insight
Hi John, would it benefit for me to buy trippleclamp with offset for my track r1? I have seen offset 25mm up to 31mm. What offset if doing what? I have my swingarm(2020+) milled out and on max length. What offset should i go for? Standard forks with ohlins fkr cartridge
2mm forward is best.
Are these switch gear available for the 2009-2014 Yamaha R1?
Nope.
Hi John, Great build! What gearing are you running and how is the swingarm holding up? I’ve heard if you run 15/42 the chain will bite in the extended swingarm. It likes 16/44 16/45 can you please give a update weather this is true or false
15/43 is the best gearing for most tracks that I have found. For really small tracks perhaps a 44 rear, and for biggr tracks perhaps a 16/44. Swingarm is super.
Got a link for the fast frank adjuster spacers for extending the wheelbase? Can't seem to find them om their website
Contact ionemoto.com for info on those parts.
Hey John - Do you have the template for a 2021 GSX-R750?
Yes.
Hey John - Do you have the template for a 2021 GSX-R750?
Removing the pump will actually make TRC and stuff runs through the ABS module affected in the long run.
Awesome video! Where are sourcing rebuild kits for the brembo calipers? Thanks!
what happens if you lose the remote or it falls off at track or during an accident can they just send me a new one or do I need a whole new suit
Just come across your videos mate. Bloody love them so detailed and informative for someone who is just starting out. Hope to see many more. Goodluck racing fro. Australia.
I installed this last season for track use and I got high vibration on the brake lever during high rpm (I can feel it when covering the brake levers). Did anyone experience the same? Any clues as to why?
❣️ "Promosm"
cant beat forged wheels not a fan of carbon in europe there banned for most race championships
hi, can you send a link for the stahlbus bleed valve im defo gona go with this cylinder
Hi John, great informative video! What chain length (number of links) are you running with the extended swingarm and 15 43 sprockets? Thanks
Thank you! 118 or 120 depending on gearing. When I ran a 45 I used a longer chain
was there performance problems with banjo bolt ones? or was it because it’s sideways? or is the regular bleeder still getting air?
Yes, I had to do away with the banjo bolt bleeder it just didn’t work for me
how do you like the castrol over something like rbf 700
Way better
Hi John! It was awesome to race together last season with Utah Sport Bike Association (UTSBA) at Utah Motorsports Campus (UMC)! Excellent video. I watched it from beginning to end and learned so much from your build. Are you racing here in Utah next year? I'll have a new 2024 R1 for us to battle together! :)
Awesome Bro! Hope to be back!
Let me also add it was great meeting you and you are a super gracious guy.
Dude, what is the specs for the banjo on the galespeed. Which Stahlbus valve are you running. Part #???
How did you get the Zeta lever to fit? my zeta lever is 1mm thicker than the galespeed one
Hey john, where can i get that steering damper bracket your running for on the top? Also what brand fork clamp did you use and what size damper is needed for that set up, Awesome idea
Great video! thanks.
I wish u could document all the building process, i will enjoy more watching it
🤘🤙
Hey John do you have a template for a 2022 bmw s1000rr with Alpha race body work...
Buddy of mine has one of those coming so I’ll be able to measure
@@KneeDownRider Perfect, let me know possibly we can correspond via email. I'm not on any social media platforms...
Will an ecu flash work fine so I don't have to buy that plug? Thank you and I enjoy your videos 🤘
Did the GYTR ECU also eliminate the ABS? Or did you still need the $300 dongle?
I just confirmed via SBU that yes, you need both the FT-ECU 2020 Yamaha YZF-R1 ABS Delete Kit when using the GYTR ECU.
@10.29- if you crash you break it , dah...🤣🤣🤣. I would really like one of those wsbk gearbox shift drums on my street r1m due to the amount of times i've hit false neutral at the worst time.
Should you remove both fuses or just one
Thanks for the Fuse tip 👍🏼
Hey man, why'd you go with the K-Tech instead to the more common Ohlins TTX-GP and FGRT219 forks?
You must race in the slow and retarded class. There are no obese racers
Thanks for showing this item. Any issues with this newer system? They had issues months ago which is why i strayed away from the tech air 10 and continued to use the tech air 5. Would definitely like to purchase the tech air 10
I am selling mine too bulky for me
@@KneeDownRider What size is it?
I’m also running the rcs 17 master although I just watched your video on Brembo vs galespeed and I would have to agree with your assessment!
How did you figure out the desired thread pitch? I have a 2012 Gsxr 750 that the have the stock brembos where the bleeder valve is on the inside!!! It’s such a pain to bleed brakes and they never seem right. This seems like the perfect solution!
Hi John, love the video i was wondering how did you got your hand on those race frame and swingarm, is it exclusive to some people or can you just get it at some auction. 🔥🔥
You can send a frame to attack to have them do the milling for the pivot mod but it is like $3000. The extended swingarm from SBU has been discontinued but you can extend the 2020+ swingarm very easily and save a ton of money. See my other video for more info on that.
My bikes current brake levers need to much force to get a satisfying amount of braking at the wheel. Anyone here has experience on what the most important part to replace is? Braking line or rather master cylinder. And maybe someone also can give me a clue about whether to pick a moto master cylinder for easy braking or rather one from magura.
Ss brake lines, then pads, then master, then rotors
I run the BDK system in my R1 and yes, I have had it run out of battery on me a couple of times in the beginning. Having said that, I love it! I noticed more of a benefit from this than from going to forged aftermarket wheels. I seriously don't understand why you'd get rid of it seeing as it does make the bike faster and it is a race bike so it spends most of its time on stands and running warmers. Just add a plug to the battery and charge it at the same time! There's seriously no reason not to and it takes me 'maybe' and extra 5s before I leave the pits and that's if I'm being clumsy. Their manual explains that the battery BEGINS to provide charge at 4000rpm but it doesn't even brake even til 9000rpm (if I remember correctly). So cruising on the way to the grid or back to the pits after a race will also be taxing on the battery. Under a racing scenario though, the battery will be fine. I have done back to back full tank stints without recharging the battery with a charger during endurance races and it has never let me down. One important thing to know for those running these on a R1! If the battery goes flat whilst you're riding, the bike will lose all electronic aids a good half a lap BEFORE it shut itself off. So yeah, I nearly looped it hard at nearly 130mph before I learned to keep my battery on charge. Ps: Castrol SRF is also all I'll use on my bikes! A good way to keep them for longer is to instead of peeling the seal, use a syringe with a thick needle to draw it out and then slap some saran wrap around the tip before you put the lid back on.
Hi man, I'm just building a new R1 which I'm going to use road racing. U just wanted to ask again. If you charge the batterie before the race it will make the race distance without problems?
@@lukasmaurer1568 No problems whatsoever. I ended up getting a 'bigger' Lithium battery to use on endurance/relay races (22-25 laps) but that was a 'just in case' and to be honest it didn't actually need it. Unless you're racing on a very slow track where you can't get your revs up for most of the lap, I can't see an issue. And even then the battery should be good for a sprint race.
Good meeting you at CVMA, hope you had a safe trip home.
Thanks Man! You did teriffic!
@@KneeDownRider thanks John! Looking forward to seeing you next round.
For stock r1 caliper people here you go , SB8125L for Left, SB125LL for Right, SB8125L for Rear (use revzilla to copy paste those part numbers in and you have the same thing as this video)
Thanks for sharing all this information, as an aspiring amateur racer, this is invaluable. By looking at your setup, I notice the aluminum work table; I also have seen it in videos from Moto America and WSBK. Where did you get it? Are those available for the general public? Thanks again!
ty for you explanation of the suspension parts ! i am really keen in suspension and kinematic/statics in the bikes ..all that info is really good and nice''sly put ! ty and i hope you make more and more videos .I subs you!
The generator is now sold and has been shipped to Australia. This is the best lithium street battery for the R1 that I mentioned: www.fullspectrumpower.com/collections/motorcycle-batteries/products/pulse-ipt-battery-p-7s
Hi John really appreciate your videos, I have a doubt if you're able to assist: I got my hands on a cheap YEC euro ecu for the 15-16 R1 can I make it work with a stock harness? Is the pinout same as US harness opposed to the immobiliser Euro harness? Cheers
awesome info my dude. I started buying take offs from a local guy who got into racing this year. It was a great way to try out sc1 slicks for the first time coming from DOT tires, but not have to spend huge money. That being said, i went into it cautiously. Riding an r6 with no rider assists besides myself, i made sure to not go all out right away, and find where the grip levels ended. As soon as i felt the rear sliding out on corner exits, i swapped them. Regardless of the wear indicators. The 2024 season I'm going to probably starting buying new tires, and let some buddies run the take offs i havent used, to let them get the feel for them as well. ANYWAY...Great content, keep it up :)
Thanks Man!
love the bike, i'm going to do a thumb brake this off-season. what bench is that? apex?
Yep - Apex RAcing Table.
do you have any footage of you racing the r1?
