    You make it look so easy! I was thinking... what if you do a spiral, like a snails shell under the opening. Spread it out and then the spike straight down from that. I'm thinking that different sized items would sit on the spiral of the corresponding size? Hmm.. might have to try it. Thanks for the inspiration as always!

    I've seen Bertram from the channel Bertram - Craft and Wilderness use one of these. He actually dug a nice little pit for him to sit on and stick his legs in to bring his work to a more comfortable level. He used a much much smaller stump dug into the ground for his. Really cozy little set up and the best part is you can do this outside while being amongst nature. Totally legit. This is something I definitely wanna have.

    With that first taper… if you don’t use the horn and instead use the face of the anvil, you don’t run any risk of over fullering your taper smaller that you mean to. You also hone your hammer skills if you use the face. You also don’t shift center of taper too far one way or the other and have more consistency over the face. You also learn to control how to best hold your workpiece at angles when using the face. Use the horn for 3 things; round bends, drawing out length of material down to smaller cross section, and to make set downs fullered in specific sections…. Not your best and most skillful option for generating a clean taper.

    • @WatersIronworks
      @WatersIronworks 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Until shortly before this video, I did all my tapers as you suggest on the face of the anvil. Since I've started using the horn more frequently, I've found it to be faster and as accurate. I picked this up based on a recommendation from Mark Asprey. Check out this video by Mark to see him using the technique: th-cam.com/video/xUPM9emeOZU/w-d-xo.htmlsi=osJ-dlPAuhrhvGlT

      I watched some videos of other smiths making chain and it seems like a lot of them do it over step rather than the nearside corner. I think I'm largely getting the same effect. As I'm hammering I'm moving the link off the anvil so that I draw out one side and get a wedge on the chain link.
