Seven Pike over 40 inches! - Day 12
In over 20 years of chasing big Pike in Canada, this is the single best day I have ever had!
This video is the day 12 of a two week trip to T&D Amisk Camp in Northeast Saskatchewan in pursuit of monster Northern Pike and Walleye. The day was simply insane. Seven Northern Pike over 40" including a monster 46" Northern Pike!
T&D Amisk Camp is an outstanding outfitter on beautiful Amisk Lake. I made my first trip there over 20 years ago and continue to return year after year for the outstanding Canadian Pike and Canadian Walleye fishing as well as the outstanding atmosphere.
Equipment Used in this video:

    Nice rifle!! I don’t agree with the choice in ammunition for it but shoot what you like!! I have seen so many failures with the hammer bullets with my own eyes and TH-cam and forums are polluted with stories of the hammer bullets failing going in a shoulder exiting a ham not expanding or expanding to fast and not getting any energy transfer and the harder people push these bullets the more likely the failure!!

    Have any experience with a Kimber 84 in 280 Ackley, I'm looking for a lighter weight rifle so also a caliber with less recoil for a lighter weight rifle. Those kimbers come in under $1000 MSRP, any recommendations on rifles with or other than my Kimber in that $500 to $1000 range?

      Hello! I actually do have experience with the Kimber Montana in 280 Ackley. Love the rifle, love the Mauser style action and 3-position safety. Super accurate gun. The only draw back for me is the rifle is a bit recoil heavy at just under 7lb as a rifle/scope setup. Mine does not have a threaded barrel for a muzzle brake.

    I use both Braid and Mono depends on the Rod being used. I typically use Mono on Baitcasting and Braid on Spinning. I also use lighter Tackle Baitcasting Rods and Shamino 150GL reels MH Fast 7’3 and Heavy Fast 7’4 and with a 17lb Mono and a 9inch Steel or Titanium in 30lb has accounted for many 40plus pike and my PB of 47’ never breaking off even in cabbage weeds. I do not throw any lures over 1 1/2oz Spinning I use 15lb Braid and just my Walleye Rod no baits over 5/8oz and have had 44 inch pike plus many over 40. I like mono for stretch when Big Pike surge by the boat but have been wanting to try 40lb Braid only for one reason longer casting distance, as Quality Mono has never let me down. I have no desire to throw Bulldogs or Musky size baits as I never have had a problem using smaller baits to catch large pike.

    • @stienfamilyoutdoors
      @stienfamilyoutdoors 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Glad that has worked well for you! No stones to through at setups that work and produce results! I like the zero stretch braid offers on hook sets, and I’ve relied on my reels drag to provide the shock absorption, or have used my thumb to disengage the reel to play the fish.

    I am heading to Northern Manitoba late June of 2025. I want to bring one setup for Pike. I was leaning towards the St Croix Triumph Inshore in 7' MHF (1/2 to 1 1/4 oz). Do you think that would be a good choice for just one rod or should I go heavier? Most of the tackle that I have started to gather is in that 1 to 2 oz range. Thanks!!!

    • @stienfamilyoutdoors
      @stienfamilyoutdoors 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      How many of your lures are pushing that 2oz mark? Is that a spinning or casting setup? I find that casting setups are a bit easier to push over the lure limits than spinning setups.

    • @CodyRangel-o5z
      @CodyRangel-o5z 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@stienfamilyoutdoors It will be a spinning setup, running a Shimano Stradic 4000. The majority of the spinners and spoons are in the 1oz range, some up to 1 3/16. A couple swim baits right now that I have are 1 1/2oz.

    • @stienfamilyoutdoors
      @stienfamilyoutdoors 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@stienfamilyoutdoors Thank you for the replies and the info!! Is there a big disadvantage to going with some of the rods on the market that have a 1/2 to 3oz lure weight range? I am seeing some in more inshore/salt water setups. I am assuming they are just a lot stiffer?

      I find that if I’m building a rifle for longer range shooting, it needs to weight 10+ pounds with a scope. For me, that makes the rifle easier to be accurate with, and mitigates the recoil side of things.

    Personally I run a 28 Nosler from Bergara. The original Wilderness Ridge with 1:9 twist w/ 26" barrel. Shot the 139 Brownings (garbage in my rifle), 160 Nosler Accubond and 175 Accubond LR. I have average .5 MOA @ 100 yard groups with the 175 consistently in 3 shot groups (plenty of times 2 shots overlapping and one shot slight right, probably my fault). That has been from cold, clean barrel and shots spaced out over 10-15 minutes and quick subsequent shots in a hunting scenario (sub 1.5 min usually). Have not invested in chrono so I have no speed numbers to show, but after setting 0 at 100 and dialing for up to 510 yards (longest shot on deer), it was as accurate as I expected and put it through the pump house. I try to not shoot past warm barrel if possible. For my hunting ethics, I can shoot and take elk/moose out to 800 yards and be confident the bullet will do the job And with deer and black bears at longer range, if I had those longer range skills. Much pricier than the 7 PRC, but I am happy with my choice and accept paying 75+ per box for the 175's. I haven't tried the ELD-X's yet, maybe in '25 I will send some down range. Only running factory loads. Only improvements to the rifle has been bedding from the rear most part of action to the recoil lug and upgrading the muzzle brake from the Bergara omni brake to American Precision Arms Gen 3 Little Bastard Self Timing. Stock trigger, barrel and bolt. I plan to only replace it if I can't get a barrel for it when it comes time to get a new one!

    I would say 300 WSM for for a cartridge closer to a perfection/do all cartridge, it pretty much gives you win mag performance in short action length with from what I've seen a higher potential accuracy and the 30 caliber is arguably the most versatile diameter in the ballistics world even today with all the options, a standard twist rate allows a huge selection of projectile weights that can near double in weight from lightest to heaviest........few diameters can claim the same

    • @stienfamilyoutdoors

      Can’t argue with the 300 WSM! 30-06, 300 win mag, and 300WSM are all solid contenders for the all around rifle cartridges! Could probably sneak a few 7mm in there as well!

    I just won a .300 win mag in a raffle. Pretty happy to have it, the one issue I have with your argument is the barrel life. .30-06 is 5,000 rounds, 308 is 8,000. Our family has both those calibers, and it works SO well for us. Will be happy to use the .300 win mag on an elk hunt some day, just to give me that extra edge, but glad it’s not my “main rifle” - I can’t shoot it as long ! Interesting difference in lure size you use vs us scandinavians. Everything less than ~7,5" and lighter than ~3,5oz is called downsize pike fishing here. Its what i only throw, but throwing a 12"+ 8oz swimbait jig is not something unusual over here. I never do, i am satisfied with smaller lures and dont have great waters here, so i go for numbers instead of size.

    • @stienfamilyoutdoors

      @@stienfamilyoutdoorsObviously we have those who throw that too, but it is not usual for what we call sportfishers, devoted to fishing. We have what we call "summer vacation fishers", those who only fish in warm weather and most often on their vacations, they often throw those lighter multi species lures.

    Very similar rod is their 8' Legend Elite Musky. Held in hand both almost feel identical other than a price tag and Elite being ever so slightly lighter.

    The 35 Whelen would be another option, and it would have less recoil. I prefer the ballistic of the .338-06, but that might not be an option allowed in your area.

      Yes - the Whelen is quite popular for Iowa deer hunting these days!

    People way over scope hunting rifles; back in the ‘80s Canadian sniper rifles had 6X Khales scopes. Making hits to 1000 meters was no problem

      Yes! I cringe when I see scopes left on 15+ zoom when the expected shot is inside 200 yards. Zoom is nice for load development, but can quickly become a liability in hunting scenarios.

    I just checked Nosler load data for the 35 Whelen and the 358 Norma. Equal speed thou the Norma has 15 grns more powder cap?? with 250 grns bullet. Norma claims about 2800Fps, more likelly

      Yeah, I don’t know if I’m buying the Nosler load data for the Norma Mag! Something definitely seems off!

    Very nice rifle. First rifle I got was a 1895 7mm Mauser.

    Flyfishing can outfish gear in spring when pike and musky are shallow. Intermediate line. I like big tube flies as it allows me to remove the hook without wrestling with the fly in their face. I would also suggest using less wrist movement when casting. Lock up your wrist and use more elbow movement.

      Thanks for the tip! This is year one for fly fishing for me, so still have a lot to learn!

    Great video! For those who are on a budget or simply can’t afford a 3-$500 reel you may want to look into an Okuma Citrix 364 baitcast reel and a Shimano Cardiff round baitcaster. Both are very affordable and excellent reels for the money.

    I am a big fan of using heavy power 8'6" salmon rods for pike. They are especially nice if you have to travel as all of them are 2 piece. I was lucky enough to score to brand new St Croix Legend Elites in 8'6" heavy recently and truly believe they are one of the best tools for the job. St Croix also offers Pike specialized rods but I find the handles tad too short on must models.

      That’s a really cool idea - I may need to try that out! I did pick up a legend pike rod and really liked it - they do run a bit shorter handle than musky rods, but I used the swim bait special and had no complaints!
