How to Run TRAPS Like a BOSS in Dungeons & Dragons | DnD 5e
From swinging axes to the classic rolling boulder, traps have been an integral part of the history of D&D. But, do they still have a place in the modern game? And, if so, how can DMs utilise traps effectively?
In this video we discuss how to create and lay traps that will be effective and memorable for the players, with a focus on Fifth Edition Dungeons & Dragons.

Building an Undead Tomb Encounter Battle Map for DnD | Dungeon Alchemist
I have a question. I'm designing a campaign around an Angel that was assigned a task but made a different decision. An example the Angel is part of a group sent to retrieve an artifact with a group of adventurers however the situation escalates with the arrival of a fallen angel. Fighting begins and the Fallen Angel escapes with the artifact instead of pursuing the good Angel saves the adventurers. The Angel's God feels it should've sacrificed the adventurers and completed the mission, because it didn't the God sends it to the Prime Material until it finds redemption. I don't want the Angel to be fallen but I do want it to have a grudge.... becoming the reluctant hero...after all it doesn't think it did anything wrong. Is this a feasible scenario?
@@ronaldjackson2290 Sounds pretty interesting! Yeah, I'd agree, just because they went against their master's orders, it doesn't mean they are fallen necessarily, just "lost". I guess it could be a bit like a ronin in Japanese history - a samurai without a lord to follow.
"will you survive the unstoppable hoard" No its unstoppable. Not watching the vid just answering the thumbnail
@@hardcorehunter7162 You don't have to stop it, just survive it lol
Excellent Video - Running a high-level campaign and need some angels in it.

And the best part about dnd is that there are many types of undead and not just the corporeal rotting walkers! 😊.
@@alexplaysgames_2 Yep, loads of options to mix things up which is great!
@@NazirNorth Thinking of using this idea for my next dnd 5e campaign and play it like a zombie movie but set in a fantasy world.
Going to officially run a campaign based around this subtype of undead you made. I am calling it "Mourning of The Death" and a subplot of this campaign is that healing spells no longer work and the gods have stopped directly communicating with mortals.
Thanks for this video, really helped me spice up my campaign
@@luxluther436 Cheers, glad it helped!
out of interest, is it the software that cant deal with it or your PC? I was just about to buy wondershare but the maps id want to make would be large and detailed lol so this might be a deal breaker
@@member529 It did turn out to be an issue with the software. I found a few other users on Reddit who had the same problem, essentially hitting an asset cap. I'd still recommend Wonderdraft though.
I was thinking about using this for a one shot. I did a zombie thing a while ago running Pathfinder. But for this have the players make 2 characters. One would be a higher level and the other lower level. They select one of the characters. (The second character lived at the island and is NPC until the players character dies. Then they control that character). The characters land on an island that has been attacked. With a few zombies hidden in the recked village. Players are first trying to figure out what is going on. Then they eventually run into an NPC, one of their created characters. The NPC is terrified and warns the party. Then leaves and hides. As the horde slowly draws near and different zombies slowly approach village.
@@Damnationization Sounds like a cool idea! Could become almost like a base / wave defense type mission!

@@NigerianSteel haha, yeah good point!
In my group's homebrew, the Bagman is a cryptid. Nobody has ever actually killed one or obtained solid proof of its existence, but there are tales of people waking up after having fallen asleep on watch to see an elongated, bony figure slipping into their bag of holding, carrying a freshly killed squirrel or rabbit, a handful of berries, or a bundle of edible roots. And when noticed, it just turns towards you and silently holds a spindly finger to its thin lips.

@@KingStark815 You're welcome! Hope it works out for you :)
So, yeah, in my campaign, my Artaficer, naturally was drawn to them and was making a small village by a volcano in the material plains, he found one who was willing to help teach him crafting, as they explored the donguen under the volcano for ore and gems. My other idea is that maybe his friend being a powerful Azer could double as a warlock Patron in another campaign, the Azer would be the same from my last campaign, but was a family friend of my new character great grandfather.
@@Argos517 Sounds like a cool idea!
wonder if there is a brush like that for clip studio cuz it looks really nice and intuitive.
@@GFreenD1 Not too sure as I haven't used it. If you are specifically doing maps though, Wonderdraft is essentially purpose built for the job.

Haha! Yes, truly horrific!
My angels belong to a picticular God. Yes there are different types of angels with different types of duties. The gradian angels: can only that wisper in someones ear saying "don't do that it's a bad idea" or "No what are you thinking that will be evil and wrong" but can't interact directly or physically help, only indirectly. One of theos angels was around when their god did something very bad. And she didn't want to be apart of it and tried to help the mortals for this she was punished the other angels ripped out her wings and she fell. But did she turn evil? No she didn't She continued to help people in spite of her god. She met some powerful friends and one of them that was part Demon gave her back her wings One was white the other was black.
Sounds very interesting! I like the idea of the whispering/non-interfering angel as a driver for a plot hook.
Wouldn't the *other* Angels fall for engaging in acts of evil, regardless of whether or not their god commanded it?
Is anything really balanced? No. Exhibit A: R.A.W. challenge rating. Don't hang up on balance. Even if you do, your party is gonna run a cokelok and three rp heavy self inserts that are like toddlers in combat. You're just gonna have to adjust on the fly as you go. If you accidentally kill people, just have a way for them to get better that is accessible to them
I have been considering a bagman arc in my campaign, with "bag space" as a domain of dread. I think I will use the big boy you have homebrewed here, with a few nips and tucks (my party isn't gonna be lv 20 for this). All of these are very good, though. Now, I just have to get my party a bag of holding sufficiently ahead of the beginning, so it's not the day after they get one that they're all kidnapped 🤣
Sounds great! Hope it goes well!
Cymru Am Byth! 🏴 Also, English territory?...The Saxons stole our land. Remember, we are the true Britons!
Yup, just stealing it back!
Goblin enters the land of the North, and steals idea of troll with bone bow and disease-arrows. Goblin sneaks off again, completely unseen by all.
Haha, hope it works out for the goblin!
Click Bait! I though this was about being a femboy pimp.
There's nothing I love more than high Athletics monsters literally just bringing a PC to another part of the dungeon and physically throwing them into a trap
Haha, yep! This is the way.
You alluded to it, but effects don't have to be at the trigger point. Given a high magic use in a world, and a dislike for magic users that stay in the back of a party, a trap trigger at the front may cause an effect 10' to the rear. Nothing quite like the Tank stepping on a plate and the cleric and MU at the rear of the party getting zapped. You can also use double triggers. Party hits the trip on the way up a hall, then hits a second trip on the way back and bang! This is a way to create a safe route for the trappers to avoid hitting both triggers.
Yep, great point! Triggers and effects can be far apart from one another, plus you can use trigger logic (and/or/xor etc.).
Oh! So this is not about DND trap houses
What's a trap house? Don't think I've come across that term before.
You say it’s for 5e, but this is very useful for all editions-especially OSR games! Diolch!
Yep, great point! Although my focus is on 5e, a lot of the steps and processes for making traps are the same in any system.
Nice video gets a new sub
Cheers!
Have animated armor actually be a colony of molluscs using the armor segments like shells and forming one body by all holding onto one another with pseudopods. As a bonus, you can eat them. Grilled in the shell, steamed, its your choice.
Haha! The shell idea is great!
would love to try a one-shot with this one
I think it lends itself really well to a one-shot or short campaign format, as you wouldn't definitely have some player deaths.
There’s a Hunter spookin’ around out there!
Haha, yeah, spot on!
For a naval campaign I made a troll that fed mostly on hagfish, so their skin was really slimy. This counteracted fire, acid and grapple.
That sounds pretty cool! They really do need some help to avoid that damage, particularly fire as it's so common.
I am using it on my next session as a companion of an orog leading a pack of orcs. I am gonna give my guys a tough time in a forest battle XD
Sounds awesome!
I love your videos
Cheers! Much appreciated!
This video has good insigths. Here's some non-canonical advice for new GMs: - If you have a problem and don't know what to do, talk to your players directly, not the internet. If you think Reddit knows better than your friends, go ask a random hobo for advice and you may actually get more sensible answers. - If you don't want to get your precious NPCs riddiculed, insulted, etc. don't play them as if they know there's an omnipotent god watching over them at all times and screw around, respect goes both ways. - If you don't want an enemy NPC killed too early (like a BBEG), don't introduce them to the players too early - think "They're standing right before the mad mage, he's as good as dead now" not "Oh god I didn't account for the mad mage to die here, how do I GM-bullshit my way out of it?" - If you think the combat is too easy, just add more enemies in the next one. Don't tweak the statblocks, you don't know what you're doing. - Don't run full casters - if you have to run casters, do only casters with spells you'll instnctively understand what to do with in combat. Players have their sheets for weeks/months and still sometimes need to think for a moment, there's no way for you to learn an equivalent before the session and utilize it properly. - Do experiment with terrain, the earlier the better. - If you want to force outcomes, don't GM. Might sound overly harsh, but I've played with good and bad GMs. The good ones would talk with their players and let go of their precious stuff when necessary. The bad ones would follow the Reddit rules to a T and wonder, why their players are gone. Good luck!
Cheers! That's some great advice there too!
But it's a rule on the internet that every D&D question has to be uselessly answered with "Ask your DM" 😂 I joke, but this is the most irritating thing to read when you're either planning to Dungeon Masturbate (as it were) or you are currently without a group trying to learn the rules.
Haha, true! "Ask your DM" is usually *technically* the right answer, but isn't always particularly helpful when you're looking for a more detailed explanation of a problem!
We have a D&D wiki homebrew race in our D&D campaign. I sat down with the player, and asked them to find the most ridiculous ways to exploit that race/class combo, and then we balanced it together. Works well, so far.
Which one was it, if you don't mind me asking? They can certainly work well if you're able to put in the time to balance it out!
@@NazirNorth He's a bugbear wielding a polearm and is specced for that weird Reach combo thing. He can use all of the OP stuff on a battlefield, where he has space, but in tunnels, stairways, etc. he gets more out of switching to sword and board
Q1. Is <Insert noun here> Balanced? What is Balance? More easy to ask, "Is this right for my game?". Q2. How do I challenge players (combat)? Action economy (many enemies), undying enemies (puzzle mechanic revives them), More HP/Armor on enemies, Magic~, many options. Q3. Is it ok for me to play my own game? YES BUT ... your character gets no special treatment period, they only get to speak when making suggestions or breaking a tie if the party split on a choice. Q4. How do I let my bad guy talk to the party without combat? Magic~ but if you want them there have their minions/full force there much like Cyanwraith can ask the party for a challenger because he has hostages and a small army backing him up. Q5. How do I force "Outcome" on party? You do not. The bad Guy gets immortality but that doesn't mean the party loses/dies, now they have to figure out how to beat this stronger bad guy. Tiamat gets summoned, the game isn't over just have to figure out how to beat her.
Good answers, completely agree!
My players are only level 3 and already two of them have a fucking AC of 23 and 22. I kind of hate how powerful characters get in 5e. I'm not sure how to counter this because they can't be hit by any normal enemies ..
What builds are they running for such high AC? One solution is to make sure each encounter has at least one enemy with an ability that requires a saving throw, rather than attacking AC directly.
can you timestamp the questions pls thanks!
Good suggestion! I've added the timestamp links to the description.
I made a homebrewed fey sorc subclass that people seem to like, its focus is primarily on positioning through misty step, and social manipulation, with summons playing a minor role (capstone feature is Summon Fey 3x/long rest without concentration or material, duration lowered to 1 minute, reflecting the Fey Wanderer feature at 11th, but it still takes the spell slot), rather than damage increases. Heavily uses bonus action so that stacking features together is difficult
Sounds interesting!
If you're a player considering homebrew or other non-standard options, talk to your DM first. I often guide players away from homebrew and third-party resources (sadly, it's often just homebrew with flashy packaging and a price tag). Because I simply am too busy as a DM already trying to get a game off the ground and keep it going. I don't have time to review and vet every player's pick-n-mix homebrew options to ensure they're not broken by being too powerful or not powerful enough. However, I can often help players find a way to reskin or interpret something that already exists within the game's first-party, play-tested, published materials that will get them what they want. And I don't have to do extra homework to ensure all the PCs are appropriate.
Very true! All player-suggested hombrew puts extra work on the DM, who already has enough on their plate creating and running the campaign. Reading and vetting (and maybe then adjusting) homebrew can be a tiresome task.
On Homebrew Balancing: I want to note that not even rules as written are fully and thouroughly play tested. There are plenty of books in various RPGs I fully banned. Usually later books, where the authors either felt the need to up the power level to stay interesting/relevant or utilised ideas they didn't originally use for a good reason. ---> Basically, limiting the resources is a good idea to make your life easy as a DM and also make clear where the setting is going. On GM Characters: They can be a really good thing depending on how you utilise them and it has nothing to do with the issue of using a player sheet or stat block. (There even is no difference in many games.) Especially small or inexperienced groups profit from NPCs travelling with them. And it is nice if they are actually fleshed out. What I would NEVER do is assuming control over a player character. This is a big nono for me as both player and GM. It takes away agency. Otherwise solid advice. Wish people would read watch this time of FAQ before dropping the same question in 10 different threads a day.^^
Really good points there! There is definitely some power creep in later books (Silvery Barbs being a prime example)! And yeah, a companion NPC can work really well in the right hands; the problem is that you just read so many horror stories online about DMs misusing them.
I love the idea of stage 3, awesome play on some classic horror tropes!
Cheers! Yeah, I really wanted to work that in there somewhere. You always have that one person in zombie movies who hides their bite mark, or just straight up didn't even notice they were bit in the first place.
That are some great ideas i will implement at my table thank you for letting me experience this ❤️
Cheers! Hope it goes well for you, can't wait to run more of this stuff myself too!
I love this
Thanks! It was good fun to design too.
Thanks for this! Also, I appreciate the RPG firing footage from Fallout while discussing what an RPG is
Hope it helped! Haha, yeah good spot on the RPG clip, not exactly subtle!
