The Truth About Job Searching in IO Psych (2022)
Do you have all your children at home? I was doing contract work in the past but it was quite hard with a baby and a toddler. My toddler is hard to keep quiet and entertained to not disrupt
What if you are already working in HR
I got mine 20 years ago haven't been able to utilize it. Not thinking no one is this field even looks and identified with.
Nice! I breastfed and cloth diapered my babes too. Now I’m a clinician MSW working with adults.
It's important also to note that jordan petterson is a very experienced clinical therapist.
@@carlosconway7692 yes, he is. I have watched some of his videos and some of his books are best sellers. Many people build their lives around what he says like it’s the Bible. Churches even build sermons off of his books. But I was mostly focused on her. I haven’t read her book but I don’t believe we need to read books or watch videos in which people tell how how we should be or what we should think so I raise an eyebrow when I see things like this circulating. I think it perpetuates anxiety and depression in the modern world because then people think they’re not living up to some invisible standard created by a stranger they’ve never met, who doesn’t know their lives or circumstances, and who profits off of people who are uncomfortable with the fact that there are many uncertainties in life and it’s okay to be uncertain and not know the answers. I then have to go in as a therapist and remind people that it’s okay to not know the answers, these people on the internet selling books don’t know you, look at it with an objective eye and not as law. Plus, as a clinician I was just curious what she had to say. I did like that she mentioned that most of us don’t need to be told how to parent. I agree with that, some people bring their kids to therapy for normal kid stuff and it’s not necessary. I do find it ironic that she wrote a book on parenting, however.
Thank you for this! I’ve been accepted into a program but since the financial aid is taking so long to be reviewed I’ve had time to do research and I’m not so sure this is a good fit for me anymore. I’m quite introverted and am not very open to living in populated places, plus my BA degree isn’t business related and I feel this would probably be a bad investment at this point. Nowadays it seems like experience is valued more than the degree, and I can already land a lot of these jobs with what I have and some experience behind me.
Hi
Graduated 4 years ago, no offers. I believe your point about having PRIOR experience before completing the degree is most important. Classmates who were already in HR or Business are doing quite well, the rest of us, not so much.
Yes, unfortunate but true
Ethics board? Like the one that says you shall ONLY confirm a child's gender dysmorphia and IMMEDIATELY put them on punish blockers? That ethics board?
Actually, my ethics board is the ACA because I'm a counselor, not a psychiatrist or psychologist. I wouldn't be able to prescribe puberty blockers. The ACA code of ethics does not say what you stated above. It does say I need to practice within my scope. If I have a child who has questions about their gender I explore it with the client and address their questions. Sometimes kids have too much exposure to the internet and misunderstand something and deduce that because they like to draw, for example, they must not be a girl because girls don't like drawing. I explain to them that there are plenty of girls and women who draw and in fact some are artists! Then the kid would usually say something along the lines of, "oh, that's good because I like being a girl." So it definitely takes some common sense when addressing issues of gender dysphoria (which most people simply do not have).
Thanks for your video, I saw Shrier on a different podcast and I wondered how it would land with a therapist. I’m glad what she expressed doesn’t line up with your experience. However, from your descriptions of parents you see that want you to fix their kids “attitude” problems and force them to get over feelings-perhaps these are the “they” that she’s referring to.
Yes, perhaps!
The analysis started strong, but it would have been more enjoyable if you let the person you were criticism express more. Including a few more short clips from the original video would help viewers judge your criticisms for themselves. I like your commentary style, and I think with a bit more balance, your next video could be even better.
Thank you! It's my first video of this style so I definitely appreciate the feedback!
When faced with a problem and you can’t determine the cause, the place to start is to look in the mirror! Could you be the cause of the problem? Could the problem start with you?
What if the ethics boards have been taken over by an ideology? If the ethics boards have been taken over, how can we trust these therapists and boards are telling the truth?
Valid concern. All of culture throughout time have always been taken over by one ideology or another, this is not new. It may feel new if your ideology is not part of the dominant culture anymore. I would say that you really have to do your due diligence to find a therapist that aligns with your values, which can be hard but trust me, they exist. Before starting with a therapist, do a consultation and ask questions. As counselors we are taught to recognize our own biases and beliefs and put them aside to treat the client in front of us. A good therapist is going to take into account the family and client's culture, religious background, etc. and help them create a treatment plan that reflects their values. If you feel like your therapist is inserting their beliefs into the treatment plan, this is a sign of bad therapy. I believe it's never a good idea to blindly trust any healthcare practitioner. Definitely ask questions, research, challenge the therapist if you disagree, and always know that you have the right to stop therapy at any time.
@@mommysocialscientist you miss the point! There is no truth in your profession. You are causing affirmative harm. You are performing experimental surgery on minors. Be aware the Nuremberg trials will be coming for the harm your profession has done!
@@mommysocialscientist youtube censored my last comment. I noted a lack of truth. I noted incompetent professionals. I noted questionable medical care. And I noted a future judgment. Let’s see if this comment is censored.
@@smhollanshead Yes, there are definitely questionable professionals in every field. And I definitely agree that you should question and challenge if you disagree with a treatment, I do this with my doctors, I don't see why you wouldn't do it with your therapist too.
Really interesting video! I feel like I see both sides but I don't really think it has much to do with therapy itself if that makes sense? Therapy completely changed my life in a matter of months dealing with childhood trauma. But I have this close friend of mine and she has been taking therapy for nearly 4 years and has seen little to no improvement. I've wondered why and I've thought that maybe it has to do with the quality of the therapist. My therapist is amazing. She knows when to teach me to be kind to myself but she also knows exactly when it's time to tell me the truth. So I've wondered if my friend's therapist is in some ways too nice. And never really challenges her in meaningful ways. But I think this lady is falsy equating correlation to causation. Her whole premise is that this generation gets more therapy yet has higher rates of mental health issues. Essentially insinuating that therapy is causing lower mental health by letting people ruminate on their problems. I think this is ridiculous for a few reasons! First off, therapy is not rumination or fixation on problems. At least no therapy that I have experienced. Secondly, from what I understand, therapies success relies on patients' willingness to change and do the work. I think this is why I benefitted so quickly from it because I was dying to grow and change and just needed some help. People going to therapy ≠ people willing to change. We might have a ton of people going to therapy now with 0 willingness to change and therefore they receive no benefit. Idk just some thoughts of mine I'm not a doctor by any means! Great video :)
I agree, I definitely understand both sides here. I'm glad you had a positive experience with therapy. There are a lot of factors that determine success in therapy and one is definitely readiness to change. It could also be that the therapist's modality doesn't work for the client. Maybe that's something your friend can explore with her therapist? And yes, correlation does not equal causation. Like I said in my video, there's a reason the family was seeking therapy in the first place so it can't be that therapy caused the issues. Willingness to change is huge! And when working with kids, it's typically the parents that need to do some behavior modification, some parents don't want to hear that so everyone needs to be willing to make changes.
Anything with Peterson is disengenuous. He has usurped the practice of psycology for his own purpose for clout and his religious beliefs. He has used psychological and social tactics to subverte people politically and in religious rhelms. He asserts his own personal beliefs, dogma not based in fact, which are fuled by his own unexamined and glorified trauma to push a conservative religious narrative and agenda as being the only correct modality of psycology. In all actuality, it is His practice that is TRUELY harming children by arming and weaponizing parents against children who are not religious, LGBTQIA and/or some other non-conformity with abusive psychological tactics and power plays which are based in colonial and patriarchal tropes in nature. The man is NOT stupid and know what he is doing. He fully believes that the ends justify the means; that his vision of a xtian utopia out weighs the psychological manipulation, trauma and malpractice he partakes in is justified. He is a highly dangerous person and parents who truely love their kiddos should ABSOLUTELY NOT take them to him or any of his associates.
You have some strong feelings! Thanks for taking the time to share them!
Do you need a license to be a psychologist?
Do you need a license to be a psychologist?
Yes, you need a license in the US to be a clinical psychologist. To be an IO psychologist, however, there is no license requirement, at least not in my state. Check with your state licensing board for information on licensing requirements in your state.
Hate to break it to you, but this is in just specially for 2022. This was for the 2000 and10s as well, and I’m sure it’s the same for 2023. Most of the I/O graduates are trying to get teaching positions to try to recruit other people into the same degree. And a lot of the masters levels are getting jobs that people without the degree can get, such as consultant jobs or HR. To be a little less cynical about it, I O is very best, and a successful student will know how to make a successful career with the flexibility that is involved in the program, and the mind of a student who is interested in such a program
Interesting and wise video Imo. When I got into the program in 2016 or 17, I quickly found out that it wasn’t all that it was cracked up to be. The program, like many other programs and colleges, nowadays, are geared towards attracting students and making money for the big business of college. these programs, unfortunately don’t offer too much hands-on experience, and practical skill implementation. So if you put that you have that degree on your résumé, often times it is going to mean nothing. People want experience I think he touched on a lot of this in your video, although much more elegantly, and not as cynically as me. But nevertheless, anyone can make of it what they want. People can excel, however much they want, and they can use the degree to do so. So, if you are a go-getter, and can make things happen, you probably will. As you mentioned, you don’t need the degree to do that, but it can help aid you. For people thinking that they are going to automatically become a consultant after college or something like that., It is kind of laughable. What are you going to consult? how to pass a test that a money driven curriculum route for you? No, but, Io is really all about flexibility. You can be many things within the field. It is all about using data and knowledge to produce favorable outcomes in the workplace that can include your own favorable outcomes. so if you know how to do that, you know how to do it for yourself. That is one great thing about the field. I became a business owner myself, and I consider the flexibility and the open nature of my college path to have contributed to that.

You'll need your Master's degree and you'll need to be a licensed counselor. Depending on your state you may need a full license or a training license. Check with your state's department of health and human services for specifics on what's required.

Hello! Are you completing a master's in Counseling in addition to your doctoral degree in I/O Psychology?
Yes, I am finished with school and completed both.
@@mommysocialscientist Congratulations! I’m also interested in I/O psychology as well as counseling. What are your career plans, if you don’t mind me asking?

Awesome, welcome to my channel! Congrats on starting your program, I hope you find my videos useful through your journey.
We can’t go from broke to broker i really wish these degrees wouldn’t cost more than what they pay
My husband does UX/UI and he loves it. He’s encouraged me to try the field and do UX research. He says it’s not complicated and the field wants people with a research background. I have a counseling degree and I wouldn’t get another degree to do UX/UI. Apply and go for it, it sounds like you have more experience than you think in UX research.
Thinking about doing this! Because I’ve noticed it makes me so depressed and comparing my life too much, but then it’s the only connection I have to anyone (as ridiculous and sad as that sounds) without it I feel so empty because I LITERALLY have no one in my life but my kids…some ppl say they “have no one” too, but it’s not necessarily true…I don’t know how I ended up here…like a series of bad decisions and sometimes there isn’t always a solution…😢
Hello. Thank you for this information. I am currently a school psychologist and I am trying to transition into i/o hr field. I would really like to get into diversity. Do you have any text book recommendations for the basic components of i/o? I don't really feel like I will have to get another degree.
Do you need to have a master’s before pursuing a doctorate or is it possible/realistic to try and pursue a doctorate without experience?
This was extremely helpful thank you!
Thank you for the guidelines you shared. My son told me that he would like more structured expectations, so I’m trying to help him determine a schedule that would be advantageous to him in developing self discipline. It helps to see what others consider to be a reasonable schedule.

Trying to decide between a ceres chill & an insulated lunchbox for pumping at work! Can I add fresh milk to cold milk while it’s warm?
So sorry I missed this comment, you've probably already found the answer by now. But if not, according to the CDC you do not need to warm up breast milk so I'm sure it doesn't matter if you mix cold and warm milk. I used to add fresh expressed milk to refrigerated bottles to top them off and it never made her sick. The only caution is to be aware of the dates. Some women only combined milk pumped from the same day to be safe. But I combined fresh expressed milk and cold milk from the same day and the day prior and it was fine. Here's the CDC link for more breastmilk tips: www.cdc.gov/breastfeeding/recommendations/handling_breastmilk.htm
