099: Hellenistic Science - Geography and Astronomy
มุมมอง 1.1Kหลายเดือนก่อน
Our understanding the cosmos and our place in it has perplexed humanity for untold generations. The astronomers and geographers of the Hellenistic period were no different, looking to explain celestial phenomena and the nature of the Earth. Eratosthenes of Cyrene managed to calculate the circumference of the Earth to an astonishingly close value, Hipparchus did the same with the distance of the...
Interview: The "Flight of Seleucus" and Dynastic Propaganda, with Angus Jacobson
มุมมอง 1.2K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
It's never easy coming up with your own origin story, and the ascendant Hellenistic dynasties tried their best to justify their legitimacy in an age of shifting alliances. PhD candidate Angus Jacobson joins the show to discuss the "Flight of Seleucus" story presented to us by Libanius of Antioch (314-392 A.D.), offering insights as to how the Successors used (or manipulated) events in their roy...

The developments in theoretical mathematics were also translated into practical (and sometimes impractical) applications during the Hellenistic period. New weapons of war like torsion catapults and enormous ships found their way on the battlefield, and this love for all things big extended to Rhodian architects who constructed their famous Colossus. Under the Alexandrian inventors Ctesibius and...
097: Hellenistic Science - Mathematics
มุมมอง 9974 หลายเดือนก่อน
The third century B.C. witnessed the greatest outburst of Greco-Roman mathematics in the entirety of antiquity. Euclid of Alexandria’s “Elements” served as *the* textbook in the study of geometry for over two thousand years, while the archetypal mad scientist Archimedes of Syracuse allegedly was so fond of mathematical inquiries that it lead to his own demise. Abandon all hope, ye who enter her...

On invitation from the Aetolian League, Antiochus III invades the Greek mainland in September 192 and declares war against the Roman Republic. The "Hellenic Age Podcast" and the "expert host" can't read/write Ancient Greek. Yup, that's "Modern Academia" for ya. LOL! Let me guess, you're married to a "Shakespeare Scholar" that can't read English, amirite? Not to worry, I can assure you, Modern English is just like Ancient Greek and literally nothing ever gets lost in translation, or is intentionally altered by the translator. Surely, you realize what a fraud you are?

Learning and knowing classical languages are 2 different thing. I actually did speak Latin and Koine Greek almost 30 years ago. for some reason, I had very little opportunity to use them.

Yes, but having a podcast on a Ancient topic means the "resident expert" should be at least proficient in the language(s) of the peoples being discussed. It's like we haven't been teaching Greek and Latin for THOUSANDS of YEARS. Alas, this is just more of "Modern Academia" lowering the bar to levels that and ant could jump over.

It's surprising how scientifically productive Hellenism was. I'm right now reading a beautiful book on the history of writing ("El Infinito en un Junco" by Irene Vallejo, translated to English as "Infinity in a reed") and it seems that libraries boomed in those days, between Aristotle's first one to the rivalry between those of Alexandria and Pergamum. Seems that the endless wars between the diadochi and epigoni did not only produce megapolyrhemes but also major scientific advances or at the very least synthesis.

According to Arthur Clarke the Greeks were close to achieve the industrial revolution. They lacked the empirism of 18th century. Learn Greek and raise yourselves and with you excel your city state wherever you are.
