I didn't realise it was a re imagining of their previous Profound Mysteries either way…Not quite the album I was expecting or hoping from this band… I wish they would make more inspired by their earlier work. Either way it is what it is, and although I quite liked it nothing really stood out to me. WATCH A REVIEW - th-cam.com/video/0sf-zOCcsA8/w-d-xo.html X - IcySnapsYeah TikTok - w...

Christmas Eve (Soul Purpose) by Blossoms is a great alternative Christmas song that I don’t hear enough people talk about. But my all time favourite Xmas song is Fairytale of New York.
I've never heard that song. I'm definitely going to give it a listen! Yeah, I think Fairytale of New York is definitely in my top 5.
first time i heard this i was on mushrooms and a buddy played the music video for all 3 of us. it was like the most visceral roller coaster ever, i was in the music and the video and it was one of the coolest things ever. cool song though its in my playlists now
Ah man, I'm jealous! That sounds like a good time and a good way to experience these tracks!
Oh my God I love love love this record so much! Now at 48 years old, I’m a grump, I’m not closed off to new music, but a lot of new stuff is just dire especially pop. Not this album, it blows my mind!
48 years young, you mean! This album is one of my favorites this year, You can find some real gems if you look hard enough!
Guess the powers were gone when they finally finished their role and moved on
I suppose so, I was under the impression they got passed down to each generation?
@IcySnapsYeah they have but now they have different powers because sages and helps link they even used the champion weapons but riju has both swords
They're coming to red rocks in April 2025. Tickets are less than $100 so I might just go. To be honest I think there's a lot of music that's best enjoyed live that I wouldn't necessarily listen to on repeat. But it's fun going to a concert and experiencing new music in that environment
I think that sounds like a fun concert! And i agree that there's a lot of music that is better live but also, it's an opportunity to see some great artists. I always jump at the opportunity to see a gig even if I don't know the artist because you never know..
Love the vids! Wondered if you’d give my music project a listen thanks icy snaps
Trans Canada Highway is my favourite work from them 😭
Oh no! I'm sorry... it still has some good songs to offer but doesn't quite click with me like the others do!
great album , even better live
I would love to see them live!
What the F V C K are all you Normies styled like Eras we grew up in ?
What Era do you think I'm from?
you should get into autechre
I will check them out!
Hi Scores is to me their absolute most perfect record. Bought it upon release date, even two copies actually. Wrote a review about it in a magazine straight away, speculating on their bright future. MHTRTC isamazing, but just a notch under Hi Scores to me, so an A. ABPOITC is the other one I put in your S category. Geogaddy and Tomorrow's Harvest are really cool, but just Bs. Campfire Headphase is the one they lost the plot for me, and really disappointed, so a D. The EP is to me almost dreadful so an E.
Interesting take! Hi Scores is definitely when they started to define their sound! The campfire headphase in D?? What about it don't you like?
@@IcySnapsYeah It sounds too much like they try to be a little bt of the Beatles, somehow, and the beatles already exist, and it just doesn't really work. It is a departure from what they did before, and artist should/caj't help evolve, but in this case, I find it a dead end, somewhat recitified with the fourth album
Great tier list! I've been a IDM fan for a hot minute but Boards of Canada has always been an 😳 blind spot. I love MHTRTC but that's the only album of there's I've heard. Keep up the good work!
Thank you very much! I recommend listening to their other albums, each one has something great to offer.
@IcySnapsYeah will do
Nice tier list, I look forward to seeing more in the future! Only thing I gotta disagree with is Geogaddi. Everything works for me and I think it's their most addictive album
Thank you! Something about the album feels a bit more mechanical to me. I think that's why I'm drawn to the more natural albums!
It is much more difficult and of genius when you can make simplicity extremely beautiful and almost perfect. It is much easier to be overly-complex to try (but fail) to create feeling. I think many people also overlook Collier's lack of melody and tune so to speak. He cant write a good tune, simple as that, yet he can write brilliant harmonies and instrumentation blah blah which doesn't matter if the songwriting is poor. Another point- his productions sound so clean and I think hes a good producer, but the final product is like a cheap product (poor songwriting) in a beautiful premium box (good production). A final point- it offends me that this man is compared to the 'Mozart of our time. Jacob is a greatly talented musician, but Mozart was a pure genius for melody and for excelling and being the best for all genres of his time. Mozart's tunes live on for hundreds of years. I dare anyone to whistle a Collier tune and someone says 'oh I know that one. I guarantee, no one will.
Yeah, I agree mostly. Something was lost in all that production and complexity !
the video of that soundtrack is impressive, how he was able to do it?
I think he played everything through an Oscilloscope. But what's impressive is the amount of time it would have taken and getting the right sounds and tone to make those patterns and letters!
apex Twin brought me here
I think you pretty much nailed how I feel about the album. The music sounds cool but Bobby G's vocals are so lacklustre on half of the songs, the nadir (for me) being Settler's Blues. I think Holmes could have coaxed better performances or added more reverb/fx on the vox. Also a few songs contain lyrics that simply do not fit the music, and interesting juxtapositions these are not. Playing is top notch (nice one Innes!), as are the sublime arrangements. Better than Chaosmosis, not as consistent as neither Utopian Ashes, nor More Light though. 7.5/10. (and cheers for the review!)
Thank you for the comment! Yeah I agree completely with the vocal.. They could have added anything to liven them up, even just a little. I liked most of the music, but again, I felt like it was nothing new and a bit dated.
Hope you live a long happy life 🙏
Thank you! Me too
buddy come over and dagger's edge are some of my favourites!! just have to let them grow on you
I've actually been listening to the album a lot recently, and they are definitely starting to grow on me a bit more..
Album of the year - I guess you need to learn something about music. Perhaps go away and stop bitching about one of the greatest artists of our time - go do something else. did the beatles have anything that wasn't just the same thing over and over, yes and those were the songs we loved. He is doing that exact thing time 100 - trying everything - if you don't like em - go away - I hear foot steps get your microphone. If you don't understand the concept of 100,000 voices then perhaps you don't understand being a human - maybe some meditation will help.
Will take few listens for me, Tyler is often confusing to me
Yeah, I can get that,! I jist love how experimental he can get without sounding like he's being completely random..
His dislike of the album is fine I am just shocked he didn't look into the backstory of the record before giving a score he has only given like 16(?) times.
i wouldn't expect him to give a good score just based on pity or anything. it did feel like an oversight on his part to not even include what the album was clearly about. but yeah a 1 felt dumb to me..
@IcySnapsYeah I mean personally I really disliked the album way before the Fantano review, I think I would give it a Strong 3 or so, but the deep backstory is really what makes the lyrics and concept stick atleast somewhat. If he thinks it's a 1 he can think it's a 1, just shocked he didn't really give much reasoning beside the fair critique of how "impersonated" the album sounds compared to ok there artists.
Honestly don't even think the illness needs to be part of the discussion at all. I watched the review with no prior knowledge of or exposure to the album and was still grossed the fuck out. It's just a case of "why say this about someone else" with additional undertones that, if not overtly misogynistic, hit very close to a misogynistic home.
There was definitely an air of spite and some distasteful comments, while I don't think he was intentionally trying to be misogynistic, it did feel a bit aggressive.
In the desc, 4th song is HEARD OF ME
My bad! I will correct it... Thank for pointing it out!
0:20 Anthony fantano???
i know ur talking about smth serious but boy u look so fine ❤❤❤❤❤
Who said you were allowed to make my day!?
I love Fantano and have always been fine with his reviews, just being him explaining his subjective personal opinions well. One thing I DON'T enjoy about his (or anyone's) reviews is this shift into critiquing themes, artists' views, etc. Her being a "main character" should only be considered a negative if she expresses it badly. We're not supposed to review people or personalities but how they express themselves in art. Bad lyrics are badly written, not conveying things you personally find lame.
Whilst I agree, I do think the artists views and themes are an integral part of what the album is. So whilst I don't think it's bad to give a critique, I think I can be bad to attack them for it. I'm probably guilty of it too but I try not to be too mean about it.
@@IcySnapsYeah Of course, you have to bring it up, but I don't think it should be brought up as a part of what makes the album good or not. If you think an artist is cringe it can help explain why the music is harder to approach for you but it should only be brought up to clarify your bias.
I like where your head is at. I listened to the album, and while I think Fantano was being an ass, In my opinion, the album is a 3/10 and fails to capture her struggles in a meaningful way. For instance, in the first track she says, "I think I'm special 'cause I cut myself wide open. As if it's honorable to bleed." It's hard to sympathize with Halsey.
@@djvg7607 I think it's completely fair to bring up if you find an artist lame. I just think it's slightly different in a review, where there should be some balance between what you think of the artist's personality and whether you think things are well-written or come across as intended. ngl tho, lately I've slowly started to change my view on reviews in general. I'll always prefer someone's genuine expression over something I find less genuine even if it's "better written." Like with his recent Ab-Soul review, Fantano's opinions made sense, but at the same time the album had a very specific purpose I feel he overlooked. I'm rambling. I think my point is that maybe an artist's personality should be seen as context you adjust your review to rather than a negative.
To me a 1/10 is the type of album never wanna come across again. You regret even giving it a chnace. Halseys album was by no mean revolutionary but a 1??? Idk there some underlying issues in his reviews. Idk if they are personal or general but man... really takes away a lot of his integrity as a reviewers
I know it's generally an opinion when it comes to reviews, but yeah, a 1 to me is almost unlistenable. Maybe he was in a bad mood :p
Encima él tiene una laaaaaaaarga lista de álbumes que merecían eso y menos de manera directa, pero no... Su "nota good" fue, es y seguirá siendo su salvaguarda
Talking about yourself doesn’t mean you’re the main character. Being the main character is thinking every problem and situation has to do with you and doesn’t happen to anyone else. It’s ok to make personal music but the way it’s expressed in Halsey’s music feels in a “bubble”. I don’t understand what’s so personal about critiquing that aspect. In my opinion, people take the lyrics super seriously because of the real life cancer, but in any other situation they would most likely come out of a Tones and I or a Tik Tok emo song. Saying that your life sucks doesn’t guarantee good music. If you want a musical example about the “serious” treatment of your own life ending, maybe check out David Bowie’s Blackstar.
I actually agree with most of what you've said. Music that comes from personal experience should be expressed in a way that is relatable. I honestly don't like her album that much either. I think that because the whole album is about her health that there should have been some acknowledgment and understanding as tho why it was so "main characater"
One of the major themes of several of the songs is feeling isolated and abandoned due to her illnesses, a feeling that is so common among those with chronic illness. It feels mean to hear someone with such raw emotion singing about how she feels like a disgusting creature in the eyes of her lover who abandons her when she is literally dying and respond "wow you have main character syndrome and sound like an angsty teen". That feels cruel. Context matters. I'm not saying people automatically have to like the album just because it comes from such a dark and vulnerable place. But we can word criticism in a kind manner. But kindness doesn't get clicks on TH-cam lol
too
Clicked on this video just to comment this lol
@@hunk88same. Typo detected, opinion rejected 😂😂😂😂
As per the rules of the internet I will delete my channel
@@IcySnapsYeahthe reason the album maybe named “the great impersonator” is because “the great imitator” is a nickname for SLE the form of lupus Halsey was diagnosed with
Oh, I didn't know that! Thanks for the info. It adds a bit extra to the meaning!
Yeah, felt like there's some personal spite there probably because of something happening behind the scenes. With u all the best with your health
@lordfoxtrot8330 I get what he was saying about the album not being great, but there was definitely some underlying animosity. And thank you! I'm doing pretty good atm:)
One of my favourite albums of the year. Incredible ride 😌
As my first intro to them, I really enjoyed it too!
Is visualizer music a way of saying I've run out of words!
Depends on how good the visuals are!
Bro you sound like my teenage self. If you think the album is corny and boring you need to grow up! 😂 #lalalala
It's a shame Coldplay has fallen like this, specially after having great albums like AROBTTH and X&Y
Fallen?? There is no parameters in which anyone has to create anything they want to…
Your opinion about Chris Martin is wild. He’s definitely not who you think he is
It's just my experience really.. I'm always ready to admit when I'm wrong and change my mind when I am. I like your songs btw. Nice stuff!
What I just realized with Coldplay is, they've become a band that creates excellent single songs but has totally abandoned the idea of making a cohesive album. Everything since Ghost Stories has good individual songs, each of which, taken on its own, is 7-10 out of 10. But, the albums themselves don't feel like albums. From what I understand, the place they really shine now is as a live act and experience. Since Viva La Vida, they haven't really tried playing the majority of new songs on tour. I think this is a struggle for many bands, but Coldplay has three separate stages live and they do four different sets. In this way, they can slot in the eclectic songs and make them work, but the albums suffer.
You're making me want to see them live now! But I agree they definitely have singles down to a bit of an art. Even so, i don't think they are good enough to really sell the album to me. I must be honest. The live performance you're describing sounds intriguing for sure!
I know it’s an odd shout, BUT there is a new The Armed album coming out. If you gave it a listen, and reviewed, would adore!
I'm definitely going to check it out for sure! I have a few things lined up already I'll try to slot it in!
Supposedly SOPHIE had the final track list set before her passing, she was also performing about most the tracks on the album in live shows so these were likely finished (intro, rawwwww, plunging asymptote, reason why, do you wanna be alive?, elegance, Berlin nightmare, one more time, exhilarate and my forever). Thee are definite problems with the mixing of this album (especially when compared to her previous albums), and the ‘SOPHIE spark’ isn’t quite there. But I think the album is pretty close to how SOPHIE envisioned it considering the only difference between the live versions of the tracks is (for the most part) mixing and pacing - tho some arrangements are missing from do you wanna be alive, elegance and one more time. I also think we held SOPHIE to an impossible standard, comparing this album to OOPUI. Even ‘Transnation’ the scrapped follow up album to OOEPIU was ‘safer’ and more pop/house rather than experimental…, and she was moving away from the heavy industrial techno in her live shows. I honestly would have preferred if the album was released in its unfinished state, or - since this posthumous album would be her last - perhaps a compilation album of fan favourite unreleased tracks (which we all listen to on SoundCloud anyways)
Yeah, I agree that they should have released the album as it was without the touch ups at the end. It would have been maybe more honest to what it was supposed to be. I am a huge fan of the heavier live techno. I wish we could have gotten more of that!
the album really fells like a supermarket background music but its not bad
I know what you mean, It had some big boots to fill.
Right… it’s time to play this ASAP 🤣
Do it!!
@@IcySnapsYeah I did and I was confused but… I… I was confused 🤣
I weirdly know exactly how you feel.. but for it it was a good thing!
I don’t know what I was listening to when I was listening to The New Sound, but I hated it. :)
That's a fair assessment, you can't like everything! What did you hate about it?
This album is just an overproduced, disjointed mess. I couldn’t stand to even finish it
I agree!
Ur my favorite review of this album so far
Well thank you very much! I appreciate the comment
For me, the problem is that "Reason Why", "Rawwwww", "Exhilarate" and "My Forever" are some of my favorite tracks by her and I've already listened to them 30530923 times since years. And it's probably the bangers on the album, so it quits some excitement when listening to the whole record. They're also the most finished tracks here and you can see the difference with all of the other tracks on the album. I guess it was how she planned it to be, risky and experimental, and it was so SOPHIE to do that. I know most of the techno tracks are an ode to german club culture and are meant to be minimalist but maybe it was too risky to mix it with the other more elaborated pop songs. It would have been more interesting to have 3 different EP's (pop, techno and alternative) like she did with Product. But I guess she wanted it that way and her brother respected her choice.
I believe there were a few almost fished tracks and then a load of demos or ideas that they just slapped on to fill out an "album" requirement..
after repeated listens I kinda began to understand the concept her family was going for with capturing being in the studio with SOPHIE showing off some loops she made. But im still struggling with justifying why the songs are mixed as they are. I understand they wanted to capture SOPHIEs massive globular live sound, but the albums execution seriously muddles the tracks and removes her signature punchy sound. Im also fearful for the future of her unreleased classics in the hands of cornballs like Jimmy Edgar and LIZ...
Yeah, I kind of agree with you! I'm always a bit sketchy of releasing music from artists who have passed.. maybe it would have been better just to release them as the demos then we could have had a better sense of where her mind was or what feeling she was going for.
Ik why jimmy edgar is unlikable but why Liz?
@@L1239-z8l she's always been a weird zionist. and a few months ago she posted something about how Israel's genocidal war crimes are valid and that Israel is the real victim in the Palestine situation. really gross scary stuff imo
Bit of a rant, sorry in advance I'm gonna be honest, when I first heard we were getting a new Sophie Album, I was immensely excited, 2024 has been one of the greatest years in music in a very very long time, and getting another album from her was just going to be the cherry on top of the cake,I didn't even seek out interviews or any snippets I just wanted to be surprised by it.But right as the first single released I was very cautious for this album, the song lacked that spark that made Sophie truly one of a kind, and just sounded like something you'd hear in a club produced by an undescript DJ. I was still a bit hopeful because sometimes the singles end up being my least favorite songs in the album and I was hoping that was the case. And then the album released.I've been listening to it and I just don't like it at all, it just sounds so bland and anemic, and it hurts me really badly to say it because I know her family put their heart and soul into this, but I think they should've just left the songs untouched and release them even in their incomplete form .Sophie fans(myself included) would've been ok with it In retrospect this album was always set up for failure ever since its announcement, it was touted by her family as the followup to Oils of Every Pearl's Uninsides, a once in a lifetime perfect 10/10 album. No matter what happened, it was never going to be the same type of album as its predecessor, I just wasn't expecting it to turn out this badly
Hey, feel free to rant anytime! I think it would have been fun to release the unfinished work as more of an insight into what she was working on, way more interesting and open for interpretation
Something interesting I found about this album is that the louder I turned the volume, the better the mixing got and only then did it seem to feel like a Sophie album-- It's like the whole thing was balanced and mixed at a really loud volume... Also, in my eyes, I think it is perfectly ok to rate and criticize a posthumous album but something that frustrates me to see is people saying "it is not what she would have wanted" as if they know what she would have wanted more than her own family that took the time to release and finish the album despite grief. Good review! I think you navigated your critique well.
That's interesting about volume, I will definitely try that myself, but yeah, it really was noticeable how quiet the mix was! I totally understand where you are coming from about the assumption about what Sophie would want. We can only really compare to previous works.. even then, we can never truly know! Thank you for the comment btw I really appreciate it!
only SOPHIE can do SOPHIE.
