Wow, very well done for doing this Jodie! 🌟 It’s not easy doing such a big, long-term project but it looks like it’s been really worth all the effort and expense as it’s all done now and you can enjoy it as much as you want! I live on a 35 ft narrowboat in Shropshire and it has been really difficult getting to grips with someone else’s design which doesn’t suit my needs as a dressmaker and artist. I’ve just had help removing one of the fixed sofas to make floor space for yoga and a removable dressmaker table on folding legs. My next plan is to add shelves to the wall to store my art supplies, replace the wardrobe door with a curtain to prevent damp and remove the other fixed sofa on the opposite wall to make a slatted pull out double bed, raised to I can see out of the window better with more storage under. I also need a compost loo so will watch your video on that. I absolutely hate the Elsan loo! So smelly and a big, heavy hassle. It’s such a long haul but I will get there even if it’s takes a year! Jenny x

22:06 I had frozen pipes in Oxford, it's not just an "up north" problem! The worst part was a frozen drain, crawling underneath with my body heat melting the mud while I sawed the pipe off at a ridiculous angle is a lasting memory! My next build is going to have a push-fit joint tight against the floor so I can just yank it off in seconds.

8:21 that's a key feeling, my guess (& I may be projecting) is that because you've got the extra space but none of your stuff around you you're rattling around like a pebble in a tin can. It's a feeling I get when I move into something new & larger, it usually only lasts a few days at most & is aleviated somewhat by getting busy with tasks.

Hi! Amazing mini camper, I love it! I’ve been looking at Vauxhall combos for a while now and think they’re great little vans to convert. Just a quick question, is your combo a long wheel base? I can’t quite tell if it is or not.

    • @vanventureswithjodie

Yes it's the long wheel base and that extra bit of length is really useful, otherwise the bed is too short for most people

I wonder if I’ll get out there and it will suck. LOL meaning I will wish I didn’t have to wonder and plan where to park each night which could take up a part of the day. And that it would be hot , or cold, or the van would become dirty fast and I wouldn’t shower as often and wouldn’t have a lot is “selfie moments” but rather be almost embarrassed of living in parking lots. But I think I am wasting time in this house and might as well waste it out there with variety.

    • @vanventureswithjodie

Hahaha honestly it's what you make of it! I go to the gym to shower mostly but I can wash my hair in the sink, wash my self with a cloth, and be as clean as I choose. You end up finding places you like and returning to them, you make friends and you share good spots, and you end up not caring what anything thinks of you, only that you don't alarm them by jumping out the side door!

Fear can be a headwind or a tailwind, and it sounds like it’s been both for you. I’m really glad you are so positive about your life choice; it’s not right for everyone but then neither is living in a house. Living in a van is a part-time job that you learn to do and for me the freedom, community, flexibility, variety, outdoorsiness (proper word) and personal growth are the payoff. I hope it continues to be a positive experience for you 😊

I'm in the planning and budgeting stages of a van build, and I'm getting ready to take a holiday trip in a rented campervan just to make sure I don't completely hate it before I jump in. I've been feeling really nervous that the trip won't go well and I'll realize that it's not for me, or that I'll ignore my feelings and convince myself I love it and I should do it anyways, just because getting a van is the only sense of direction I have right now. So it's really reassuring to know that you can have all of that discomfort even in your own build, and it won't necessarily last. I am still really looking forward to my trip though and I think it'll be a lot of fun.

I recommend going to an event where you're really only using the bed & maybe kettle for your first trip, being out with people all day stops you wondering & worrying, you'll have plenty of time to think it through after. Good luck!

The concrete structures that were on the beach are the remains of the original telegraph exchange boxes! Massive cables ran through the ocean across the world and Empire from them, the first cabled internet … the tower / folly on the cliff was dismantled and rebuilt to stop it falling off the cliff into the sea! The coast near to where I live… nice to see it on your channel.

Thanks for compiling your products. Frustrating for me though as notion. so says that javascript is disabled even though it isn't (for me, as I have a more complex setup than average). What are those clippy things called that you use to affix the PVC shower curtain tubing to the ceiling? Neat solution. Thanks, and good to see your van build ideas. BTW the importance of a shower varies with lifestyle. When touring the western USA, with lots of hot dusty hiking, and no gym for 100 miles, a shower in the van is 10 times more appreciated than when a gym or rec center is nearby.

Fear is good, means you are human and have survival instincts. But, control Fear, as we control aggression or as we control compliance. A famous quote states, ‘imagine if you had no fear, what would you have achieved today?’. Control of our primal instincts comes from knowledge, training & experience, which once gained, must be complemented with research, planning and contingencies. We are always stronger than we feel or think we are, especially if having a character that is willing to fight to survive. Though contradictory to this, is majority of humans choose flight over fight, which is also fine, as it is the primal human survival instinct to survive and escape what we fear. The reality is life is full of sacrifices and it depends on what we are willing to sacrifice on a daily, weekly, monthly, yearly basis. Only warning, is modern society, thinks about the here and now, with no time given, to planning our future older lives. So as much as we plan daily, we must plan for the future, in the medium & longterm. Remember, the greatest gift we as humans give to ourselves and we can give to another, is ‘time’. This is where modern lifestyles clash with giving, as they are often far to self-centred, self-focused, that to give-up our time for another or for ourself, is forgotten or dismissed. It is why there has been an increase in mental illness, as self-focus often means a ‘dislocation from expectations’, which then causes mental stress. Enjoy your choices, believe in yourself, but never stop seeing the world for what it truly is and if we are to achieve something, it means sacrificing our time, often our pleasures, to do so. Always ask the deep questions of yourself, why am I choosing something, what is my aim and short, medium and long-term aims with doing what I’m doing? (Don’t be like modern society & only care for the moment with no longterm planning. Longterm = into your 50’s and retirement years) Am I doing what I’m doing to escape something (flight) or escape something I’m to scared to take responsability for, or to selfish to fight for? Understand and know yourself. Don’t blame others, don’t blame society, don’t blame your luck in-life, take responsibility of all your actions as anyone from 16yrs old or 18yrs old should do and don’t expect something or relying on benefits from someone in later life to make it alright (Inheritance, choice of partner, etc), for self benefit choices in earlier life, where no planning and actual preparation was done for your future life. From someone born an orphan, homeless from constant institutions at 15yrs old, with no ever known relatives or family, living rough on the streets finishing my O’Level’s and grew-up on the hard-side of life. Done the whole living out of a van for years before it was even a perceived modern thing to do as a ‘choice’ (As each generation think they were the first to a certain lifestyle, yet Vanlife was a lifestyle 50+ years ago, though listening to TH-cam, you would think it is new). I learnt, majority who live this life are escaping from something, often responsibility of life, where for me it was true survival and not a choice. When you then gain a choice, because you had to do it for survival, you leave this lifestyle, as in my personal view, it never gets you anywhere in life, especially later-on in life. Don’t get me wrong, it is fun, it is free, it means you can wake-up with beautiful views, but, the reality and truth, is the rest of society sees you as a gypsy, though they will not tell you to your face as modern culture is not to offend, so truths are never told and why so many suffer from dislocation of expectation. I’ve lived most of my life from birth till my 30’s as being seen by society who truly don’t care, as a nobody, a gypsy, an orphan that was expected to be locked away due to no family guidance. Yet, truth, honesty with my self situation, fighting my fears, often my tears, confronting responsibilities by not taking flight, gave me far more self-worth. It makes me sad when I see, read and listen to people who have choices and make this choice for lifestyle reasons of flight from responsibility. Oh the luxury to have had such a choice. Just my thoughts, but all the best, for today, tomorrow and the future. Just never give-up believing in yourself as otherwise you become trapped in a culture of lifestyle. Knowledge dispels fear, but that comes with personal sacrifices. Life is never free, but well worth fighting for to improve your lot in life.
