    my jeep currently has offset balljoints but needs to be replaced because of play. (installed from previous owner, mostly likely bent Cs). Ive noticed that offset balljoints come in various degrees of camber. How can i find out which one to buy or is there any other solution to this?

    • @TheOutlawOffroad
      @TheOutlawOffroad 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      first you need to figure out why there are offset balljoints, as that is not normal or common. Sometimes these are installed as a "quick fix" to a bent axle. We typically install dynatrac ball joints which last a long time

      the easiest way to is to lift the rear tires off the ground and make a mark on the drive shaft and tires. Spin the tires and watch the drive shaft and count rotations. For every 1 full rotation of the tire, you will get multiple rotations on the drive shaft. in between 3.5-4 rotations = 3.73, just barely over 4 rotations = 4.10, 4.5 rotations = 4.56, between 4.5-5 rotations = 4.88, just barely over 5 rotations = 5.13, and almost 5.5 rotations = 5.38. Hope that helps!

    Very informational, Thx! I do have a question on your statement that the upper rear control arm (adjustable) is the 2nd most important ones to replace. Can you expand on that a bit since it would seem logical that the lower rear is the one that pushes the axle backwards to both re-center it in the wheel well and restore wheelbase. Thx!

    • @TheOutlawOffroad
      @TheOutlawOffroad 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      in most cases, it is more important to dial in the pinion angle (uppers) than locate the axle forward or aft. Generally, and especially with newer Jeeps, we're not lifting them 6"+ to fit a larger tire so the smaller lift height has less effect on axle positioning.

    You provided no hard evidence other than you saying they dont do anything. Seems like they work well for many people. So even if all they do is help reduce wear and extend the life of all your steering joints, why are they bad? Seems like your evidence is pretty subjective. Even if they just help dampen steering, how is that bad? You really didn't make much of a case against them except "steering stabilizers are a waste of money cause i said they dont do anything but dampen steering, so dont buy them and waste money." Was really hoping this would be an informative video with some sort of hard results or scientific test. Turns out it's more of an opinion peice.

  • @peruser155
    @peruser155 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    "When aired down." Most important phrase in this entire video. If you aren't a guy who is so hard-core offroad that you bring along all the tools required to air down when you get to whatever road or trail that requires that sort of alteration to your rig, then MORE tire sidewall really doesn't make that much difference. Don't believe me? Look up tire tests regarding a 20" wheel versus a 17" wheel, but BOTH with a 33" tire, and BOTH with 35 psi (most common pressure for everyday use). You will see that if you leave the 35 psi, the tire deflection over obstacles is so similar between the two tire sidewalls that there isn't a clear reason to go 17" versus 20". In fact, that extra inch and a half really makes zero difference offroad UNLESS you air down. I personally don't know anyone that takes the time to air down if they are just headed to a remote lake or hunting spot off the highway. Bottom line; if you have a true hard-core offroad rig like a rock crawler Jeep that you air down for the day, more sidewall makes sense, so you can utilize that extra inch of rubber. But, if you are the other 90% who have a daily driver that sees occasional off-highway use and don't want to mess with the hassles of running 9 psi only to have to put 35 back in for the ride home, the practical difference is so minimal that esthetics should be more important. In which case 20's wins every time imo.

      Thanks for the great question! For normal use on a 35" tires, and not off-roading you really don't "Need" to upgrade the components, just replace worn out components. What we see most of the time though is that the oem replacements are very close in price to upgraded versions so it makes sense for most people to get the much better quality part!

    Maybe you can help me, Im finding alot of misinformation on the interwebs. I recently got a sweet deal on a 2012 Jk sahara with a 3.6 , 6 speed manual on 35s. I believe it has 3.73s in it but not positive. It never sees 6th gear. The guy I got it from threw in a set of Yukon 5.13s front and rear with install kits on the deal but they were never installed. My question is are 5.13s going to be a little much? the jeep will see about 60% Montana highway and 40% steep mountains. Itll see some ATV trailer towing but not much weight. It is also highly doubtful of going to a bigger tire. Ive run many a jeep with 4.56 and 4.88s with 35-38 inch tires but theyve always been trailer queens or beaters that never saw the highway. This one is different especially with a 6 speed. You seem to have the info I need before I dump a ton of money into putting the wrong gears in and end up divorced because of it. lol

      i've heard of at least 1 company that has DOT approved beadlock wheels Hutchinson I believe makes a beadlock wheel that can be driven "legally" on roads. they might be others. I've always wondered can you just run a beadlock wheel w/o the tire in that beadlock position. run it normally. I'm sure it'd be a pain switching tires back and forth in that format. i've never had beadlocks so just a noob in that sense.

    • @TheOutlawOffroad

      I mean... we daily drive beadlocks on the highway all the time 😉 We have never been harassed about it, as there are so many wheels that look like beadlocks. The law came from a old school way of making beadlocks where a wheel was cut, then bolted together making it kinda unsafe. Now the wheels are cast and machined as one piece with the beadlock ring being bolted on top. Much stronger. We have no reservations on running our setups on road

      A dual stabilizer does absolutely nothing to help, and we hate seeing people waste their money on them. a 33" tall tire is not as heavy as one may think. proper steering geometry, proper caster and toe will help keep that jeep centered on the road and a normal stabilizer is more than capable enough to cushion any road feel.

      If you're getting pulled all over the road, you need to check balance, steering geometry, and alignment

    Do they not help you track better with a set of bigger tires ?

    • @TheOutlawOffroad
      @TheOutlawOffroad 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      they do not. A proper alignment, tire pressure and steering geometry will help track better and a single stabilizer is more than enough to accommodate that

    I have a 05 TJ Rubi on 35s with 4.56. I have to re gear due to a bad install. Since I am at that point I was considering 4.88s. it is my daily and I plan to off road more. Any advice or thoughts on my direction? Thank you in advance.

      the 4.0 needs all the help it can get. 4.88's and 35s is a great match

    Thanks for the straight to the point video. I bought a used 2010 jeep jk. Pretty soon here I want to upgrade the steering, properly. Where do I start ?

    • @TheOutlawOffroad
      @TheOutlawOffroad 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      replacing ball joints, tie rod / drag link and making sure your steering geometry is correct is where we would start!

    I’ve heard that stabilizers won’t fix wobble if you have it. But hubs, track bar, and upper and lower control arms are the primary factors of the death wobble to happen.

      Just putting this out there, I had a 2007 Rubicon that had no problems at all with the rims that came on the jeep Mickey Thompsons with 35" tires, well they got stolen and I replace with Pro Comp Rims and that's when it all started LOL 4 Wheel Parts would not accept that the Pro Comp Rims would cause Death Wobble so they had me try some new bars etc etc Unbelievably the Tires and Rims showed back up in my Yard after I had to buy the Pro Comps,,,,, Long Story,,,, well I change them back out and it fixed the problem,,, Cheap Rims caused my Death Wobble and 4 Wheel Parts wouldn't fix the problem they just made excuses... Death Wobble is Scary when it happens on the FWY at 65 MPH.

      @@hntgnut obviously the front end of these jeeps are very sensitive to change, you don’t just change 1 thing without going full bore on changing everything. Even then it wouldn’t be right. I’ll have my death wobble fix for awhile, then I have to adjust something else when it starts back up. It’s really chasing your tail around the whole problem. I have ABS and Traction control on, on my jeep. It runs and operates fine though. Ain’t nothing that a piece of electrical tape won’t fix.

    I have a 17 jeep jk .... I have death wobble. I have 4 " lift with 22" wheels and 35s. Pinion angle is 2.5 the best I can tell. What should I be at pinion angle

    • @TheOutlawOffroad
      @TheOutlawOffroad 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      JK's really need 5.5-6 degrees of caster. 2.5 is incredibly low

    People that feel the need to do this stuff to make their home town mechanic have to learn to be an expert at such things should have to pay thousands and thousands more if you want Cadillac ride from a god damn log wagon

      No we usually learn these things through trial and error and work on them ourselves. If we do need professional help we take them to a Jeep specialist. I don't expect just any yahoo to know the ins and outs of these vehicles anymore than I would trust them to work on my Ferrari. And just because it's a lifted Jeep with bigger tires doesn't mean they shouldn't ride and drive just as good as a stock one.

    • @nickbrown6553

    • @TheOutlawOffroad
      @TheOutlawOffroad 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      A lifted jeep doesnt have to ride like garbage. With the proper alignment and knowledge we get these things riding incredible even with 40"+ tires. We DONT expect your local shop to know this, and that is why we exist as a jeep and 4x4 specialist shop. The same reason you don't take a high end sports car to Joe Blows Radiator for performance upgrades.
