Brake Fluid Change on 2006 Lexus IS350
In this video, I will show you how I change the brake fluid on my Lexus by performing a one man brake bleed using a vacuum pump.
I added chapters to this video so you can skip ahead.
The brake fluid change starts at timestamp 14:32
Buy this one item before starting the job:
32 ounce bottle of DOT3 brake fluid from local auto parts store for a cost of about $8
Tools I used:
Rhino ramps.
Two 2x6 pieces of wood approximately two feet long.
One 2x4 piece of wood exactly 9-inches long to jack rear of car
Hydraulic floor jack.
4 jack stands.
21 mm socket for wheel lug nuts.
Breaker bar.
Torque wrench.
Paper towels.
Funnel.
Metal coat hanger.
10mm box wrench.
OEM Tools Brake Bleeding Kit number 25136 for a cost of about $30.
These are all common tools that most DIY mechanics should have.
Mileage on my Lexus when done = 70,057 miles.

    Stupid question, but I'm completely new to this topic. I had a nasty surprise that my 2024 Toyota Corolla Cross hybrid didn't start on Xmas day, the battery was dead. Question: I park on the street. I don't have access to an electric plug. It looks as though this unit must be plugged in to work. Does there exist similar chargers that are stand alone, that I could recharge at home after use?

    • @JohnsGarage
      @JohnsGarage 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yes. This unit must be plugged into a wall outlet to work. There are portable "jump packs" that are like a battery in a box with short jumper cables that some people use to jump start cars.

    What is the best coolant to use for Lexus is250 2009?

    • @JohnsGarage
      @JohnsGarage 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      In all of my cars, I just buy the factory coolant from the local dealership parts counter. The price is about the same as buying an after market coolant from a local auto parts store. I don't like mixing coolant brands in my engines. The 2009 IS250 would be fine using the same coolant shown in my video.

    I just finished doing the switch swap just as described here. The hardest part was to find the assembly, with switches installed, for my Samsung Model. It needs to be the correct assembly. I would not try to remove the switches themselves since all three might be on their last legs anyway, so why go through all this effort just to save a couple of bucks, and they can easily be damaged trying to get them out of the assembly. This video showed me the right way to fix this issue, and most microwaves are probably just like this one. Thanks for a helpful video!!!

    • @JohnsGarage
      @JohnsGarage 29 วันที่ผ่านมา

      One of the reasons my video was a little bit long, is that I showed how hard it is to access the engine block drains on both banks of the V-6. Basically, not possible due to the big engine in a tight space. One alternative is to heat the engine up until the thermostat opens, shut off the engine, and drain the radiator. That will drain the heater core and most of the engine block. I did that recently in another video of my two Corvettes having their coolant drained with a hot engine. The other alternative that I mention in this Lexus video is to simply drain and fill the radiator, then come back a few weeks later and do it again after the new coolant has mixed with old coolant during driving.

      The trunk lid on this car was never designed to fully open by itself at the push of a button. I have seen a few people attempt this, but they distorted the trunk lid with overpowered lift struts and you can see it when it is closed. When this Lexus model was brand new, the trunk lid only opened about an inch after the button was pushed.

    Well done mate. Very comprehensive video. I want to pull out the IACV from my 1991 Subaru Liberty/Legacy(as iscalled in the USA). Watching your video gave me some helpful tips, e.g. how to block the coolant hoses but my main problem is finding a new IACV. Someone had one in the USA and it was over USD$500 plus shipping etc. I can't find one locally. I might find an old one at the wreckers. But an old one might not necessarily be a good one. I can't even buy a gasket for it. It's a big problem finding parts for old cars. It shouldn't be like that. I suppose I could pull it out clean it well and use the old gasket with silicone on the IACV surface and the surface on the other side. I'm sure that will make it the airtight. Silicones are a wonderful invention. I used silicone to join roof tiles that were broken in the middle. I even used silicone to repair roof tiles without even taking them off the roof. I'm surprised that your car has travelled over 614000 miles/988000km That's unbelievable. My 33 year old Subaru has only done over 310000 km/192000miles.

    Is it normal in 12V AGM charging mode that when the green light has already flashed once, i.e. the full charge is about to end, the voltage drops again and the device flashes orange, i.e. is back at 75%? Or is this due to the charging curve, which registers that the battery is still weak and needs more charge to maintain the final voltage?

  • @mac3792
    @mac3792 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    You over filled with oil. Acura states the capacity is 4.6qt with filter. You have just added 5qt. You are about half a quart high. The oil pump will fill up the filter within 2 seconds so pre-fill is unnecessary. I do like your video but please think about the amount of oil you use.

    • @JohnsGarage
      @JohnsGarage 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Actually, I did not over fill. I always pour out part of the new bottle into a spare bottle before I start the oil change. So when I begin, I have exactly 4.6 quarts of new oil waiting to pour in. Look at my video starting at 2:00 minutes and you will see.

    That was a job well done and a great video. The only things I will probably do differently is use an infrared thermometer rather than jumping pins on the OBD port (It's usually only off by 2-3 degrees), and measure total fluid drained. You know you put 3 quarts in so you should get almost exactly 3 quarts out.

    • @JohnsGarage
      @JohnsGarage 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That would be your choice on your car. I've seen others demonstrate the difference between a scantool showing the actual fluid temp on the screen versus various spots on the ATF pan and it can vary a lot. The fluid level amount is highly dependent on the true fluid temp being within a few degrees so you want to be as accurate as you can.

    • @JohnsGarage

      Ideally, start out with a cold engine/transmission. I only ran my engine long enough to drive it up onto the ramps so I could get a floor jack under it, then added rear jack stands to level the car. The ATF will warm up quick enough to trigger the dash light that will tell you when to begin draining off the excess ATF. This service cannot be properly performed if the ATF is too warm.

    I have the same model. Did a full brake job. A few weeks ago. Your car is super clean and well- maintained like mine. Just an FYI… I did a lot of research before I did what I’m getting ready to describe. The transmission went out about 50,000 miles with the previous owner. As I’m sure you’re aware, there was a recall on the transmission. Dealer replaced it with a new one. I bought the car shortly thereafter. At about 70,000 miles I inspected the transmission fluid (old Honda mineral based) it was pretty dark. My local Honda dealer still had a case left.. they wanted around $20 a quart! I said no thanks. I ended up changing the fluid to the Valvoline multi-vehicle full synthetic. The procedure was .. drain 3 quarts and add 3 quarts..drive about 50 miles manually shifting through all of the gears. Repeat that process until you have pure red Valvoline ATF. The difference in shifting and quietness was astounding! It was like a different, better performance transmission! Now I do a drain 3 quarts and add 3 quarts every 3rd oil change. I have nearly 160,000 miles on it now. Still running great! No regrets! I just wanted to share that with you since I’ve been helped by watching your videos. Thanks again!
