Don't fall in! LAKERIDE comp - when a trials nobody almost wins! Malverns Classic 2024.
Malverns Classic 2024 Lakeride Competition! I'd never been to this festival before so really didn't know what to expect...
On Saturday night, we had the Lakeride event with hundreds of spectators gathered around the water to witness the splish splash of inevitable bike related carnage. The floating pontoon bridges / skinnies / wobble boards were impressive to see sprawled all the way out over the lake, round the other side of the island and back to land again.
Out of a whole heap of specially invited top level riders, only 3 of us managed to complete the course! So that meant @duncshaw , @oliverweightman and I had to battle it out until only one man was left standing with a dry set of clothes...

Most creative line ever!? Megavalanche E-bike Finals 2024: Crazy adventure through rocks + snow...

The 2024 E-Mega started from the top of the quali track this year due to high winds and low temps making a Pic Blanc glacier frenzy a bit too chilly to have any fun on. The organisation were afraid that riders would suffer from hypothermia so the E-bike, women and Challenger races all funnelled their way down the qualification course to where it meets the main race track above Alpe d'Huez and c...

WHY NO FAT BIKES WITH 4-5 INCH TIRES?
C'est complètement DINGUE ce genre de descente à des vitesses pareilles avec des tas d'obstacles pour se faire très mal en cas de chute. A mon sens, c'est un sport TRÈS dangereux et pas du tout spectaculaire. Salut et fraternité*

Hey Jamesy! Were you by any chance in this last Trans Madeira, Autumn edition? Or was I just seeing things?...I could have sworn you were in the Highlights interviews as you have a very distinctive voice. If you were, hope you had fun in my country! Cheers from Coimbra, Portugal!
Hi! That was indeed myself. Good detective skills! Haha. I loved it thanks. Such a great week of riding!
Well good for you my friend! I'm really, really glad my eyes didn't deceive me and that you loved that Atlantic Pearl as much as I do, and have been loving for the past 15 years. It is since then that I always delight myself, with my family, in our summer vacations. In Calheta, where you guys ended your rides in the final day. And when someone hears you speak one finds it impossible to forget your tone of voice. It0s incredibly singular. Be well Jamesy! All the best from Coimbra, Portugal!

Thanks very much! Haha, I was pretty pleased with how that climb went but maybe I ran out of puff a little bit at the top. At the same time though, I didn’t want to drop down the other side feeling tooooo tired so I didn’t totally end myself on the climb because I knew it was going to be tricky times descending in the wet!
Really easy for you in the mud. I apreciated the last overtaking with the heart above 170 ...thanks for sharing with the full data, very usefull to understand better the race.
I wouldn’t say really easy but I seemed to do a better job than most! Real tricky conditions. Thanks for the comment! Cheers
For me as an average biker-Joe it's just bonkers to see that people can put down 1000 watt during a race like that 😅 You could probably power a toaster with that 😂 One of the best Megaavalanche 2024 videos out there...love the stats. Puts the fisheye videos into perspective wjen you see a grade auf -5/% 😮
Haha, indeed! Probably could power a tiny little toaster for a short amount of time 😅 I can’t guarantee just how toasty your toast would be by the end of it though! Probably more likely to turn it brown with mud rather than coming anywhere near close to burning it 😂
@@jamesy_boy_shirley 🤣😂🤣
Jeez, sounded like you had covid. Hope you survived the weekend.
Haha, well, a couple of weeks ago I actually did! So maybe I still wasn’t quite at my best but gave it a good go anyway.
good race on difficult terrain but at least youd did not have hte puddls and the mud they had on other days. what i do not understand, wjy young men take an e bike for a race. e bikes are a gadget and useful really for people who have problems with legs or lungs or hear like my broher in law whoi is over seventy and had a spine op last year. but well still you were good.
Well, I did both races... The E-bike on Saturday and the main event on Sunday. E-bikes can be really fun but on this course, it’s true to say it doesn’t make too much sense. Most of the time we’re above 25km/h so we get no assistance anyway! A different course with some technical climbing challenges would make more sense to me. Either way, it was nice to get to do both. Glad you enjoyed the challenge too. Cheers!
Holy shit James! I took a right hander in 2023 qualifiers after a major chain off and I can wholly attest to the gnarliness of the terrain. I went a bit lower than you, following the fire road for a bit then cutting through and for me(quite a few notches down on the skills food chain) there was only one doable line. Everything else was IMPOSSIBLE yet here is someone having a crack. Your line Sir, was an absolute outrage. Most won't realise just how bum-squeekingly gnarly it was because few have gone searching for the 'dream line'-- but the whole of the right is not for the faint hearted. A veritable maze of spikey rocks, holes of death and insaniac drops(yes, and I think dragons too). I frequently uttered 'no ---- chance', or 'haaa! only a complete lunatic or a complete pro would try that' and now you have, haha. So I would like to congratulate you. Not only on the 9th place but on a Great F***ing Line that was in true keeping with the enduro/free-ride ethos of top to bottom however you can. With creativity, skill, application and a little French je ne sais quoi you my friend have shown how this great race can be made even better. Bravo!
Haha, well, thanks very much! I think you’re totally right that the vast amount of line choice available on this moon scape section makes the quali track quite special. It would be super cool to have more wide open multi line options for mass start races in the future. It’s a fun challenge to dream up and remember new lines and it also allows the option to escape/overtake the traffic! 🙌
Honestly my arms were aching just watching this! Crazy effort, well done. I hope you had a strong word with your rear tyre! It threw you off the bike once and seemed to enjoy it so spent the rest of the race trying to throw you off a cliff! 🙈
Hahaha, it’s true to say that I was too lazy to put a fresh tyre on for the race but really it was the slippery conditions that were the problem! No tyre would make a difference when riding that hard pack black ice slippery death! Good fun trying though! Cheers
Hello James. I've watched you last year and this year woudn't miss it for the world. Yes, you were struggling, but never really lost your nerve or your cool head and made an incredible effort to finish 9th. I've been lucky enough to be able to talk with Olivier Bruwiére over the last year on his races, achievements and shared passion for the sport(absolutelly spectacular human being, Olivier) and he was adamant in agreeing that this year the difficulty was turned up not one but two notches. At least. And I do agree with you about the line you took in the beginning, it was spectacular, alternative and smart! But took a lot of wind out of you. Haven't seen your video of the main race yet but will, as soon as possible. I know already, it must have been mayhem for you as well...The amount of mud, fogg and confusion, even at the very front, was staggering. You're a true warrior, you. I wish you all the best, all the way from Coimbra, Portugal. Good ridings!
Thanks very much for the message! Yes, Olivier is a great guy and an impressive rider for sure. I’m looking forward to next year’s race already… I’ll try and make sure I’m well prepared for it 💪 Cheers!!
And I'll be watching all the footage that you post, without question! Give them hell, always! Cheers!

Excellent ride. I really, really, love the telemetry. I've shared this with six or seven people already just because of the telemetry. It's also fun to watch someone in position 15 or 20 or 25. A lot of times when you were watching the videos of the ones right up front, it's just them riding. Here we got to see you catch people etc. Excellent race!
Haha! Well, thanks! I’d certainly quite like to be one of those at the front but I totally know what you mean. The times when I’ve won my quali heat for example are never as exciting as when I’m having a good battle with a whole bunch of other people! Plenty of action in this video that’s for sure.

Great race. The strengths and drawbacks of the extra grip tyres were really obvious. I was amazed at how good they were on the snow and they were immense on the mud. But boy did you pay for it on the stones near the top, the pedalling and tar! You must have been knackered after the race!
@@antog42 It’s cool you noticed! They felt good but noticeably draggy which I guess isn’t ideal for such a pedally course! If I had more time (and wasn’t also racing the e-bike category) then maybe I could have cut the rear tyre down to make it roll a bit faster… made for an interesting race at least! Definitely felt tired by the end of the weekend that’s for sure!
Thanks for sharing the dashboard! It's really interesting to see the slope, speed and power for this race!
