Problems with coilovers is the component's can rust which is a real downer
That's true. Gave them a good dose of WD-40 so fingers crossed!

You may have seen my video of fitting the same lift in my low ceiling garage. Would not be without it now. With the TVR I can sit on a sealey seat & work under the car with no trouble. Thanks for showing. Steve.
I hadn't, but I have now and subbed. Thanks for commenting. Those bottom pulleys are a pain eh?
A friend of mine has an UP!, and had a lift in it the other day - it's a tardis! I was quite surprised just how roomy the interior is.
Did the suspension creak a bit??? The coilovers arrived today
@@could_try_harder Not that I noticed. It wasn't a very long journey to be honest, just under 15m in the car.
@SibodKent I'm midway through fitting the coilovers on ours. Front end is done. 2 out of 5 spanners so far. Filming it for the channel.

What thicknes of steel is best to use on doing a t2 splitscreen
I've never owned a splitscreen, but I used 2mm which steel in this video for the structural stuff and the new external repair pieces (more cosmetic) were 1-1.5 mm
I thought my two post was short at 108" ....what's yours under 80"?
Hey I've never had any complaints!! ;) but yes it's 80" and the tallest we could fit in the garage (which is under the upper floor of the house)

Mate you need a face mask and ear protection. I use to grind without a mask and my nose would bleed days later from the shards of metal going up my nose. I know where a visor rather than glasses.
I have all the PPE now, but thanks for your concern.
hi Mate where did you get that repair panel from thanks, great vids
That would have been either heritage VW. Or Alan Schofield. Thanks for the nice comment! Good luck with your resto.
Way too much is depending on oil pressure to simply "HOPE" that spring tension is good enough. Some say, "You don't want it to be too much, you don't want it to be too little." What does this mean when you are trying to control oil pressure at RPM and idle? There is a spring tension specification in the Volkswagen manual under the Engine section, page 35 for Type 1 and page 30 for Type 2. Installing each of these springs should never be guess work. There is a lot of spring tension variation even among new springs. Spring tension is measured when the spring is compressed to the specified loaded length. To do this will require a scale on the drill press table. Set the depth control on the drill press to the specified spring loaded length above the scale surface. Compress the spring to the loaded length then observe and record the scale force. Install springs to your liking then observe their performance. Swap them out as necessary to adjust for desired performance. Read my technical paper titled "Measuring Oil Pressure & Oil Cooler Bypass Spring Tension" on the subject published on The Samba under Technical, Miscellaneous.
You should make a video.....
How can oil housing fixed because it seems like it is stripped the time i screw oil filter back because my oil filter is leaking and i changed it twice but still leaking?
I'd be surprised if the thread on the engine is stripped. The oil filters are fairly soft metal and are only supposed to be 'hand tight'. The oil filter seal is made by the large rubber ring around the outer part of the mating surface. Sometimes these stick to the engine and you end up with two. This could feel like it is not tightening properly as there is more rubber to compress. And likely would not seal, leading to the filter leaking. Pull the oil filter back off, and inspect the mating surface for the old o ring material. Don't forget to top up the oil in case you lose some whole doing this.
I am also surprised because I used a hand to tight it not a tool. But I will remove it and double check
@could_try_harder I did take the oil filter off and inspect it as you said . But there is no old gasket or seal and is still leaking so I don't know what is the problem.
Just letting you know that the oil filter is no longer leaking again. I hope that is sorted now
😊 didn’t we do well
Complete legends!
Awesome video, keep it up! 👌🏻
Thanks Adam! More soon
I need to do this for my 72 bus. I see you welded the top, around the vent, and the pillars. What about the bottom. What welding did you do at the bottom?
I did the bottom of both a pillars. You can buy those repair panels and they are thicker steel as you would expect. So easier welding ;)
Hi. Can gearbox lubricant viscosity cause sticky or not spreading clutch plate ? I have brand new pressure plate/shoes and throw out bearing but it is still slipping after turbo kickes in. Also finger has no problem :)
Or maybe overfilled lubricant ?
I'd say it's very unlikely, is the clutch standard? If so you should probably upgrade if you have a turbo!
@@could_try_harder I have original turbo, my car is 1.6 GTD from '84. I installed oem Sachs clutch set and i can't figured out what is the problem.
@@yusufunlu3530 some people try to fill the gear ox through the inspection hole on top. That could cause clutch slip 😉
@@could_try_harder Do you mean speedometer wire hole ?
Thanks for documenting this, very useful. What wheels do you have on there? Interested in getting some. I have the original chrome-capped and rimmed ones and I’m not a fan of the look.
Hello Sam thanks for watching and commenting. The car came with BBS RA alloys (14 inch diameter). They were marked up as BMW. So probably from an E30 3 series. Hope that helps you out
Another great and informative video and outstanding work you have done! Good luck with new project
Thanks that means a lot
Where did you buy the repair panels?
Hi, thanks for watching and commenting. I bought panels from www.justkampers.co.uk www.alanhschofield.com and www.heritagepartscentre.com i also got the funky green front panel from custom and commercial
Thanks!
Looks a lot more challenging than the Captur, but will be rooting for you on the journey back to working order!
It's more than we've attempted before so i appreciate the good wishes!! 🙏
Hi Great work. Where did you get the front panel from and are you happy with its quality?
Hi thanks for the comment. In this case it was from heritage vw. A klokkenholm panel. It fitted really well.
Hello, in my 1974 model 1303 car, after the engine has warmed up enough, the oil pressure light on the display comes on at low revs, and goes off again at high revs. There is no such error when the engine is cold. Do you think the reason is the oil I use? sensor error? Is the oil pump faulty? Also, which oil do you recommend I use for this car? Greetings from Turkey :)
If the actual oil pressure is low, then you most likely have a problem with the oil pump or the pickup tube. If the actual oil pressure is good, then you have a faulty oil pressure sensor and it will need to be replaced
thank you, i will try
wy did u not remove the hood pump? The painters sertainly did not!
Oil and the paint process don't mix. This wasn't a "restore to factory" project as you can see from the colour choice. Thanks for your comment.
Thats normal for an old roof. The rear window frame always rots out because youstaple the cloth to a plastic frame thats imbedded in the metal frame a little water moisture can collect in that edge and rust will come trugh. NOT true there is a tention cable in the side that together with a spring holds the side straight when the string breaks the tention is gone and wont hold the side in plase and it creaps up. The first roof was called sonneland i believe that was the brand. it was always a cloth and the line in the rroof hes poibnting out is stiching from factory (Witch u can still get) The PVC roof never was factory so this one had already had a roof replacement in the past. I lube the roof once a year liberally BUT NOT WITH WD 40 use a silicone based lube it takes way longer for it to dry out and is better for the plastic bushings.
Thanks for your take on the process. It sounds like you have some experience too.
I’ve been fitting hoods on these cars for over 10 years. You are incorrect that the MK1 Golf Cabriolet didn’t come with a Vynil hood. Sonnenland is the generic name given to cloth tops as it was named after the area it was developed. Hartz bought out the Sonnenland factory and continued to make the material and the only cabriolet MK1 wise that came ever out of the Karmann factory with a cloth top was the Rivage edition in the U.K. Again replacing side tension cables on a shrunk roof will NOT undo years of UVA sunlight damage. That is a scientific impossibility. Those side cables are on springs so the springs extend as the cable is pulled up By the shrinkage. Just how does the moisture manage to get into the material that’s stapled into the plastic insert? I use WD40 to lubricate joints as so many are neglected and it’s a good start to drive any residual Moisture out of the the joints.
Go many psi is the right psi?? And how do you know the gage is accurate?
You can see ours is decent in the video. Oil bypass operates at around 6 bar I understand.
Hi, do you only lift the car at the rear? Isn't it counterproductive if the car is high at the back and low at the front? As hardly all the oil will run out like that? Thanks for any tips!
I hear you but the drain point in the oil tank means that's not really an issue. Also you never get all the oil out anyway given that the coolers are at the front. Thanks for the comment!

Yehaw 🤠 this could have been so much more like OE with some better materials, like ply, and re using the original cleaned carpet off the original shelf
thanks for the comment.
it hit a blade of grass ?
It's actually really well put together. Nothing like the Peugeot's of the 80s with their selection box plastic trim!!
My guess is they hit a Kangaroo. All the tell tale signs are there
I WISH that were the case!! They carry more heft than a deer though. Complete write off for sure!!!
Friend of mine lived in Norway. You have to deal with Moose there (and he’s managed to survive hitting one! That would have done the job. But deer is probably the most likely culprit.
I also reckon a deer, Simon moose are huge that's scary 😂, @tomcallaghan4664 kangaroos must make a right mess. We we where saying at least captur hasn't got those firing caps which push the bonnet up, they can be a nightmare to fix then. This one looks pretty straightforward, so fingers crossed.
How much space did you need for that ramp? Cheers.
How do you mean? Width or height?
@@could_try_harder both please.
287 cm wide X 204 cm high. That's the actual ramp dimensions. I have more space than that of course.
I’m looking for a cabriolet what would you expect to pay for a new hood purchase and install , round figures as I’m in Canada, thanks
Hi Terry sorry I've no idea what you could expect to pay Canada. But i reckon on £1500 to £2000 in the UK. Depending on the state of your hood, frame and material options
@@could_try_harder thanks that’s all I wanted a gauge assuming 8-12 hrs of work,
It’s so hard to gauge as to what would be needed until it’s stripped down. I’ve done these cars where they just only need a top. Others there’s rot on the top frame header. So new metal has to be welded in. Rotten rear window frames. Worse is usually where an old top is left in it holds the wet and rusts the frame. Failure to maintain or replace when it needs to be because it’s a big ticket item is a false economy as at least some point the job will need to be done properly and will cost even more , worse when it’s a new owner left with the bill on top of buying the car. It’s worth watching the strip down video if you haven’t already.
Nice work looks good 🤙
Thanks Derek
The oil change video was basic, but some people need that, good work
Thanks Terry. It goes to show how easy basic maintenance really is. :)

Thank you! Cheers!
Do you remeber the tickness and widenes of spounge installed on front and back of top ?
Carl provided all the materials so I don't know the exact dimensions, but looking the video it looks to be about 3" wide and about 1/4" thick
Good luck with rest of the build. I thought you were setting up to say..'engine swap'. How much experience do you have with welding btw? Keep up the good work!
Thanks for the kind comments. My welding is mostly self taught and advice from friends who are very skilled. Therefore I'd say I'm ok. I had a go at Tig welding back last year and. Really enjoyed the experience, so that's something I'd like to do more of. There's no engine swap on the way for this one. I've sunk too much time and money into replacing the original ancillaries!
