X688XJT - a new project
My latest project is something that most preservationists would either laugh at or shake their heads in disbelief; an Optare Solo. A trendsetting and innovative vehicle at its launch in 1998, it derived its name from having an entrance that is "so low" from the floor, namely 200 mm (8 in) with kneeling suspension. The first examples went to Wilts & Dorset who had extensive input into the design of them as the company wanted a modern, low floor midibus to replace its fleet of Metroriders, in total taking 88 brand new over a two and a half years and then later on taking even more second hand examples. Sadly, of those 88 only a handful are known to survive with many succumbing to that Optare plague - box section rot although later examples had much improved protection. 2688 is in superb condition in that regard with only superficial surface rust in places and nothing that needs any attention at this time although will obviously will be kept a close eye on. This video gives a short overview of her in service and the early weeks of her preservation, with more updates to follow.

GLJ681N Luccombe to Blandford 24th July 2021

An onboard ride my MK1 Leyland National, GLJ681N from her home base near Milton Abbas, down into Winterborne Whitechurch and then along the A354 into Blandford St Mary. Excuse the dodgy gear changes as we leave Winterborne, shes not very good n hills and I was trying to find the balance between revving the nuts out of her and labouring the engine and not really succeeding . . .
THX160S onboard ride from Blandford to Sutton Waldron, 25th July 2021
มุมมอง 4293 ปีที่แล้ว
The third installment of THX160S drive around the Dorset countryside, this section starts off where the previous one left off in Blandford town centre, where we then head westwards briefly out to Blandford St Mary and turn at the Tescos there, before retracing our steps through the town centre and then heading through Whitecliff Mill hill to rejoin the A350 passing through the many twists and t...
THX160S Shaftesbury to Stourpaine ride 25th July 2021
มุมมอง 4713 ปีที่แล้ว
A good long ride savouring the sounds of a Leyland 0420 in a bus which was a rare combination anyway and these days is probably almost unique, and definitely when coupled with an Allison automatic transmission. This is my Leyland National THX160S, new to London Transport in 1978 as a standard dual doored 510 engined machine that was converted by Chase Buses to her current configuration in 1996....

An onboard ride on my unique Leyland National THX160S, latterly with Chase Buses but new to London Transport in 1978. She was converted by Chase in 1996 to have a Leyland 0420 from a Leyland Freighter recovery lorry and an Allison MT650 fully automatic gearbox similar to that used in Dennis Darts, but this one came from a dustbin lorry!! As you can hear, she has a very unique sound to her . . .

A video of a ride onboard former Hants & Dorset Bristol RELL UEL564J n a town circular route at the Stroud Running Day on the 11th of July 2021. Apologies for the shakiness of this but sitting at the rear was bumpy to say the least!!
Leyland National GLJ681N interior ride 18th July 2021

A ride inside my Leyland National MK1 where I just placed my camera on the engine access hatch on the floor at the rear of the saloon, fully expecting it to vibrate away or go flying the first corner I came to!! It didn't though thankfully so heres a shortish 8 minute journey onboard - enjoy!
THX160S look at the underside 11th June 2021
มุมมอง 2.1K3 ปีที่แล้ว
On the 11th of June thanks to LMS Commercials, I managed to get THX over a pit and had a good look underneath to see what sort of condition shes in after her 43 years. I'll let the pictures do the telling but basically, a fair amount of surface rust but nothing of any concern at all. Tyres in good, if old condition, brakes all good with plenty of life in them, oily in places but no major leaks,...

So my regular viewers will be well aware of my pet, Leyland National GLJ681N who has featured in a few videos on here! Well, she now has a friend in the shape of something that is National shaped, but is about as modified as could be without being made into a Greenway. More details later on as the project progresses but eagle eared viewers will discern she does not have a Leyland 510 engine in ...

Optare Spectra L127ELJ MOT 27th April 2021
มุมมอง 1.5K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Something a bit different from me - I had the pleasure of assisting my good friend Darren taking his preserved Optare Spectra L127ELJ for its MOT on this day, which I'm pleased to say she passed with flying colours. New to Wilts & Dorset as their fleet number 3127, I have a strong connection with her as she was new to Lymington depot and as I was based there for ten years, I did many, many mile...
A pictorial tribute to Chase Buses
มุมมอง 1.4K3 ปีที่แล้ว
A small montage of photos of Chase Buses, an independent well known for operating a large fleet of Leyland Nationals which even more surprisingly mostly retained their Leyland 510 engines whereas most other operators re-engined their examples. Most photographs in this collection were taken by myself on various visits, but a few of the older ones have been acquired over the years.

GLJ681N blind wind
มุมมอง 2K3 ปีที่แล้ว
A full wind from end to end of my National GLJ681N's destination blind done way back on the 25th of July 2019. Its a genuine Hants & Dorset Poole depot with part of a later Salisbury depot blind tacked on which has had some custom destinations created by myself for rallies - no prizes for guessing which ones!! And yes, my arm did ache by the time I'd finished . . .

This leyland national sounds like an enviro 200 Euro 6/Mmc 🤔🤣
Ugh love that hard cranking and that struggle. Love all that smoke too. I would love to be stuck struggling to get it started only to have it conk out on me over and over again.
Complete with original Hants & Dorset fleet number. Oh how I remember that clatter. Happy trip down memory lane.
Class 142 on wheels :)
30 bloody years absolutely astounding and bloody beautiful sorry for my language by absolutely love the mark ones
Getting lung cancer just watching this
I want that bus...as we all do
Love that sound
What livery will you put her in?
Its a credit to the BL engineers and designers that these still look modern today.
At 02:00 what is the smell like?
I miss the sound of the Leyland National so watching this video is really really amazing
Saw you and the the National yesterday at the Brislington bus rally. I was going to talk to you but i was at the other side of the car park. Got plenty of pictures of the National.
All I can say is well done to the guys for saving one of the most beautiful buses ever seen on uk roads, they should never have been taken out of service, they are a lot lot better than the rubbish the bus companies use today. The guy who designed the National deserves a golden hand shake.
I've seen this in it's original livery last year Alton. Looks great.
Garbage
Is this now preserved?
That would be an emissions pass at VW! 💪🤪 I have to say I love the sound of a National! The 510 is a beautiful things - obviously a bit of a pain to work on, but they sounded awesome!
I love these buses!

Why didn’t they put on them a pump to spray ether/ easy start to get them running if it was always a problem to start em
Man, I love how this bus fitted with a clattering Leyland 510 turbo diesel engine can "SING". No wonder the bus will always be a hit with me.
Good way to burn out the starter
What a pile of shite
For a bus which is nearly as old as me,it sounds great.
I remember these operating the number 1 route between Cannock and Walsall. Chances are I heard them before I saw them because they were REALLY noisy.
Fine choice of music if I might say so.
The soundtrack to many a kid's early years.......
The engines are crap, but the starter motors are brilliant.
Ps uk England 🇬🇧 here
Would like to own one of these Leyland buses but were to get them if for sale ?
Did these old things have pre heat or was it like the old ee engines on locomotives?
Good batteries!
Memories of this actual bus :) th-cam.com/video/SbbdSW0K7UY/w-d-xo.html&lc=Ugx-eacn7HcraQg1-M14AaABAg
Salut my friend super bus super video subscribe subscribe .
The bus companies should never have taken these gorgoeus buses out of service, much more reliable and better than the so called buses in service now, love the sound of the engine, nice one lads for keeping one of these beauties alive.
Could listen to that 510 purr all day long
I remember this bus running against us at Choice - absolute beast! What drivetrain has this got as it had an Alison T545 autobox fitted? Can't remember what engine either! I'm looking to update their Wiki page too.
👋👋I used to drive this bus for Chase, and I nearly forgot about Choice 😳 those were the days! I remember the day the conversion to the Autobox was done, I know the engine was changed but I have no idea what too. Although rumour has it, the engine was from a Leyland Truck 🤷♂️ I can’t remember why the bus was converted in the first place. Don’t know wether the original engine or gearbox had blown up or they just fancied a project. The first time it was back on the road after the conversion, it was awful to drive. I will never forget the aggressive banging when the gearbox was selecting. I drove it on the 560 for the first time after conversion, and by the time I got to Wolverhampton, my nerves were shot 😳so it was taken off the road and they did a little more tampering, and it was possible the best one to drive afterwards 😂
Brilliant job. Very well done to all. Fabulous video and great music. Here's to the next one. THANK YOU
Lovley
Sounds like it struggled.
oo la...came here to see whether any bus ride south out of Shaftesbury has been uploaded, and this abandonment of a recording is all there be...? :pFFt: th-cam.com/video/3tS_W3BW5G8/w-d-xo.html
Oh that smoke would have smell soo great
Great video and a thumbs 👍🏾 up for the early Leyland National Mk1 a specially the ones with the slimline pod. The Setra 315 GT-HD Coaches which is similar to the Leyland National with the slimline pod.
Extended Bodies for Most of the Buses Much as I am not comfortable asking the depot why they stopped running the London Suburban Loud 4-Speed Leyland Hydra cyclic Automatic Gearbox Gardner 6LX and Gardner 6LXC Diesel Engine Olympian ECW’s on routes 30, 121, 230, 271, 349, N279 And 158 why can’t we make the same make of the Loud 4-Speed Leyland Hydra cyclic Automatic Gearbox Gardner 6LX and Gardner 6LXC Diesel Engine Olympian ECW Buses but Modernise the insides of these Buses. Also, make it low floor up and down and also extend the middle body part of these vehicles a little bit more so there will be more space for the wheelchair users. By the way, if you could remake and Modernise these vehicles could they also make them into a Loud 4-Speed Leyland Hydra cyclic Automatic Gearbox Gardner 6LX and Gardner 6LXC Diesel Engine Olympian ECW Version’s that if it will be possible to Modernise the insides of these Loud 4-Speed Leyland Hydra cyclic Automatic Gearbox Gardner 6LX and Gardner 6LXC Diesel Engine Olympian ECW’s make it low floor up and down and also extend the middle body part of these vehicles a little bit more so there will be more space and even a London Suburban 4-Speed Leyland Hydra cyclic Automatic Gearbox Scania N230UD Enviro 400 MMCs and 4-Speed Leyland Hydra cyclic Automatic Gearbox Gardner 6LX Diesel engine Enviro 400 MMC’s and also extend the middle the body part of these vehicles a little bit more. Why couldn’t we have those London Suburban Buse's Pale red on the top roof Pale red again on the top middle Milk Chocolate brown on the middle Creamy white on the Bottom Middle and Milk Chocolate Brown again on the Bottom on most of those kinds of those Particular Double Decker Vehicles? Could you put the Loud 4-Speed Leyland Hydra cyclic Automatic Gearbox in the Scania N230UD Enviro 400 MMCs and also put the Loud 3-Speed Voith Diwa Gearbox in the Volvo TD102KF Engine East Lancs Olympus and also extend the the middle body part of these vehicles a little bit more and also turn most of them to a London Suburban Buses. By the way, could you also make the routes 349, 121, N279 and 271 into a London Suburban Buses and have a a mixture of a Loud 4-Speed Leyland Hydra cyclic Automatic Gearbox Scania N230UD Enviro 400 MMC and Loud 4-Speed Leyland Hydra cyclic Automatic Gearbox Gardner 6LX and Gardner 6LXC Diesel Engine Olympian ECW Versions. Could they also transfer the Arriva Bus Depots from Hackney to Stagecoach company so they can replace all the Arriva buses so that all of them can go to Birmingham and Leeds and they can be replaced by Stagecoach Loud 3-Speed Voith Diwa Gearbox Volvo TD102KF Engine East Lancs Olympus and also Extend the Middle body part of these Vehicles and that includes A Mixture of a Stagecoach Loud 3-Speed Voith Diwa Gearbox Volvo TD102KF, Gardner 6LXC and Gardner 6LXCT Engine Northern Counties Palatine One and that Includes a Loud 4-Speed Leyland Hydra cyclic Automatic Gearbox Gardner 6LX Diesel engine Enviro 400 MMC’s and Loud 4-Speed Leyland Hydra cyclic Automatic Gearbox Scania N230UD Enviro 400 MMC Vehicles A Little Bit More? Can Arriva London Bus Company Replace Most of their Wight Buses so they can also transfer them to Birmingham and Also Manchester so they can be replaced by Loud 3-Speed ZF Ecomat Gearboxes Volvo D10A Engine East Lancs Olympus and also Extend the Middle body part of these Vehicles A Little Bit More Thank You Very Very Very Very Very Very Very Much. Oh by the way could the bus Factory Companies also Make More of Those Loud 4-Speed Leyland Hydra cyclic Automatic Gearbox Gardner 6LX and Gardner 6LXC Diesel engine Olympian ECW Vehicles And that also includes Those Loud 4-Speed Leyland Hydra cyclic Automatic Gearbox Cummins L10 Enviro 400 MMC And also Extend the The middle Body part of those Loud 4-Speed Leyland Hydra cyclic Automatic Gearbox Gardner 6LX and Gardner 6LXC Diesel Engine Olympian ECW Vehicles and the Loud 4-Speed Leyland Hydra cyclic Automatic Gearbox Cummins L10 Enviro 400 MMC Vehicles and that also includes The Loud 3-Speed ZF Ecomat Gearboxes Volvo D10A Engine East Lancs Olympus A Little Bit More And Paint Those 4-Speed Leyland Hydra cyclic Automatic Gearbox Cummins L10 Enviro 400 MMC Vehicles and also those Loud 4-Speed Leyland Hydra cyclic Automatic Gearbox Gardner 6LX and Gardner 6LXC Diesel engine Olympian ECW Vehicles and that also includes The Northern Counties Palatine One with a Volvo TD102KF, Gardner 6LXC and Gardner 6LXCT Diesel engines with a Loud 3-Speed Voith Diwa Gearboxes and The Loud 4-Speed Leyland Hydra cyclic Automatic Gearbox Scania N230UD Enviro 400 MMC Vehicles and also The Loud 4-Speed Leyland Hydra cyclic Automatic Gearbox Gardner 6LX Diesel engine Enviro 400 MMC Vehicles to the Grey Green Colours Just Like The Other Original Scania Grey Green on the Bus Route 125, 173, 313 and the 103. If all of the 14 Leyland Titan B15s are Fully Red and even Mostly Red, could they also Repaint All of Those 14 Leyland Titan B15s into Grey Green Colours Just Like The Other Original Scania Grey Green on the Bus Route 313 so they can Reuse them for Only Every 6 and a Half Months and also Reuse them on those Rail Replacement London Bus Routes if that will Be Alright for Only Just Every 6 and a Half Months, starting from the beginning of October and also Reuse Those Buses Only on the London Bus Routes which are The 341, N41, 34, 123, N29, 149, 221, N73, 121, 86, 30, 262, 147, 396, 41, and N26 so Please make sure that the builders can do as they are told!!!! And please do something about these Very Very Very Very Very Very Very Very Very Very Very Very Very Important Professional Ideas Please Please Prime Minister and also includes the Mayor of London.
Great video. Makes me feel old though; I remember the excitement when these appeared new on the school run in Essex (Eastern National). Where's the time gone?
As Spectra's are integral buses do they drive and ride different to buses with body on frames?
How long does it usually need to crank for in severe winter weather when it hasn't been started for a week or more? What's it like putting up really steep hills with a cold engine?
From memory the temperature was about 1 degree or so, and she hadn't been started for about 6 weeks at that point if that gives you some idea. Shes not very good uphills whether the engines hot or cold, the engine is still being essentially run in after a full rebuild before I repurchased her. Once I can get her to my mechanic he can tweak the fuel pump a little to give her a bit more poke and clag!!
